AUTHOR'S NOTE: Hey everyone, sorry that it has been so long since I last updated. As always GRR Martin and HBO own the setting.
As the Wall continued to shake, Sansa and the others dashed for the cage and the stairs in an effort to escape from the collapse which seemed imminent. Unfortunately, it was clear that the others felt the same way. Men of the Watch, Wildlings, soldiers of the Golden Company and soldiers were all trying to get off of the Wall and there were only a few ways off the Wall. Beyond the Wall the horn blasted again. This caused the Wall to shake again. Several men screamed as they were thrown from Wall and fell to their death far below. Sansa, being smaller than those around her, could easily have been nocked aside, or even pushed off of the Wall, if not for those around her. Jon and her Wildling guards were with her and they kept the worse of the press away from her. Thus, they made their way to the cage, just in time to see it start to go down, crammed with more people than it had been designed to.
"The stairs!" Jon called out and the joined the press of people trying to make it to the stairs and down them to the yard beyond.
Before Sansa had thought going up and down stairs a long, tiring and if she were being honest, frightening. Now she eagerly joined in the rush to their only hope of escape. As they drew near, they saw everyone trying to push their way onto the stairs. A man was pushed off and fell screaming to the ground below and Sansa would have sworn that she could hear the stairs groaning under the combined weight. Seeing this Jon left Sansa and her escort. Standing on a block of ice which had broken off to grant him greater height. From there he addressed all within earshot.
"EVERYONE! STOP THIS AT ONCE! FORM A LINE! WE WILL DESCEND IN AN ORDERLY MANNER! ONCE YOU REACH THE GROUND GET SOME DISTANCE FROM THE WALL AND FORM A DEFENSIVE FORMATION!" He seemed to recognize one of the members of the Watch making his way down the stairs as he pointed him out.
"Grendel! When you get to the bottom have ravens sent to all the other castles! Tell them what has happened and they are to come here with their full strength as fast as they can!" The man nodded and continued to make his way.
Jon appeared to have restored a sense of order. The pushing and shoving died down and something vaguely resembling a line was formed. The Wall continued to shake and more and more pieces came off. More people fell as the Wall fell out from under them. Thankfully the stairs remained intact. At last, after what seemed like eternity, Sansa and the others made it to the stairs. As the started down Jon left them.
"Where are you going?" Sansa demanded. He gave her a sad look.
"I am the Lord Command of the Night's Watch and the Wall is mine. If the Wall is to fall I should be the last one to leave. Once everyone is down, I will follow." Sansa wanted to argue, but there was no time as the press of people pushed them apart. The last that she saw of him he was making his way to the parapet.
The journey down seemed to take forever. With every step Sansa heard the steps groaning under the weight of all the people going down them and she was convinced that they would collapse, if the Wall itself did not fall down first. Fortunately, they did not and they reached the ground. As people reached the ground they spread out like water bursting form a dam, united only in their desire to get away from the Wall in case it should collapse. Once she was clear of the Wall Sansa looked about, trying to see Jon, but there was no sign of him. Igra grabbed her arm and pulled with more force than Sansa could resist.
"We need to get away. When this great lump of ice comes down it'll crush everything and everyone near it!" She must have seen Sansa's fears on her face.
"Don't worry! Crows can fly!" Sansa did not find the jest all that comforting, but she allowed Igra to pull her away.
A crash sounded near them, so loud it threatened to deafen Sansa. She looked over and saw that a large chunk of ice had broken off and landed nearby. Another one crashed to earth, sending shards of ice flying everywhere. One such shard sliced across Sansa's face, causing blood to seep from the wound. This motivated her, as well as those around her, to move away with greater speed. She looked back one last time and her heart stopped. A black figure, which could only be Jon, was flying down the steps. Here and there sections of the stairs fell away as more of the Wall broke off and fell. Her heart stopped when the stairs fell away in front of him. Without breaking stride Jon jumped. He did not quite make it, but he was able to grab the edge and pulled himself up. Sansa was not the only one watching and some even cheered as he made his way down. At last he made his way to the bottom and he joined them all in flight.
Some people had time to mount their horses, but many simply ran on; though someone did pause long enough to let the horses out so that they would not be crushed when the Wall collapsed. It was not long before Sansa's legs and lungs burned and bottom of dress seemed to double in weight as it grew wet from the snow. She doubted that she would have been able to keep up had it not been for Herra and Mally, who took her by the arms and helped her along. Sansa had hoped that Jon would join them, but he had gone to attempt to restore order to what was essentially nothing but panicked flight. All that Sansa could do was to wish him luck and continue her own flight as the Wall continued to fragment. More and more chunks fell and the sound of them crashing was joined by the screams of those unable to get far enough away in time.
When the Wall finally fell, it did not fall so much as seemingly sink. It slid down, roaring and raising clouds of snow, ice and other debris so high that they blocked out the sun. Pieces of it shot out like bolts from a crossbow bolts. Several flew over her head and people to her left were knocked down by others. It seemed to go on forever before it finally stopped and brought a silence which was almost as terrifying as the sound of it falling. In the clouds of debris which made it almost as dark as night Sansa could see little and even the shouts of those around her seemed muffled and far away. Fortunately, her guards had managed to stay close to her.
"What do we do now?" Mally asked Igra. Before the older Wildling woman could respond Sansa spoke up.
"We make for Last Hearth, the seat of House Umber. It is the closest castle from here and we will find help there." At least she hopped so and if nothing else she was hopeful that its walls would not be collapsed by a magic horn.
Well, that was a problem for later. For now they had to focus on getting there. The road there would be hard and with the fall of the Wall…they would likely be pursued. She tried to put that out of her mind as they began to trudge through the snow; leaving the work of her ancestor reduced to a pile of rubble. Even as they began to walk Sansa could have sworn that it was getting colder.
AUTHOR'S NOTES: Hey everyone, I hope you liked it, sorry that it was so short. To be honest, I was not sure that I was going to continue the story. The story has developed differently from what I wanted and there are things that I wish that I had done differently. I got seduced by the rule of cool and wrote accordingly. I have had trouble thinking of how I am going to bring this story to a conclusion. We will see what I can do. Till then please pray for Ukraine and all who need it. Bye and may Jesus bless you.
