It is the day before mother's Day and Kai calls up his mum. "Hi mum, are you excited for tomorrow?"
Maya is in the kitchen supervising a number of pots bubbling away. "Oh Kai! Just the person I needed to talk to. Remind me, what is Nya's favourite type of jam?"
"You're making jam?" Asks Kai.
"Jam, scones, pie, so what does she like? Strawberry or blueberry?"
"Um, strawberry? I think? You do know it is mother's Day, not daughters day right? You don't have to go all out."
Maya sighs, "I know, but Nya and I, well I just want to do whatever I can to bring us just a bit closer. Gotta go, the oven is beeping!"
The next day Kai goes looking for Nya and finds her in the kitchen. Nya is pacing nervously.
"Hi sis, didn't expect to find you in here."
"Oh Kai, have you got everything ready to go see mum?"
"Oh I'm always ready to go." Says Kai smoothly as he slides one hand through his hair.
"Kai, be serious, what about your gift? You did remember to get something right?"
Kai pulls a bouquet of flowers out from behind his back. "Of course, water lilies freshly picked with Cole this morning."
Nya breathes a sigh of relief.
"How about you?' asks Kai, "what were you bringing?"
"Cookies." Says Nya as she continues to pace.
Kai looks around at scattered ingredients. "You're making them yourself? I didn't think you liked baking?"
"I don't, but mum is always saying that thing about cookies… I know we are not that close, maybe this could help show her I am willing to try? It's easier for you, you can at least remember them before they left, and you and dad are like mirror images, but, well, I'm nothing like mum."
Kai rembers Maya also stressing and over-preparing. "Oh I think you have a few things in common."
smoke starts to billow out of the oven behind Nya.
"Um…" says Kai looking between Nya and the smoke, "those cookies?" He says pointing.
Nya turns and gives a gasp of surprise before opening the oven. Even more smoke pours out as she opens it. Nya coughs and takes a step back before using her elemental powers to move water from the sink into the oven. There is a sizzling sound and the smoke subsides.
Nya stands there in shock. "What am I supposed to do now? There isn't time to bake another lot!" She looks about ready to cry.
Kai thinks it over. "Bring them anyway." He says.
"But they are completely burnt!" Nya says.
"Trust me." Says Kai as he scoops a few into the prepared gift box.
Kai and Nya enter the blacksmith shop. Kai presents Maya with the bouquet, "Happy Mother's day!" He says while giving her a hug.
Nya lurks nervously at the doorway. Holding her box of burnt cookies.
"Oh they are beautiful Kai!" Says Maya, "Ray, find some water for these will you?"
Kai goes over to Nya, takes the box and gives her a wink.
"Nya made you some cookies" he says. While turning back towards Maya he 'trips' and fumbles the box. He shoots a fireball towards the box which drops to the floor charred. The three others look at the burnt box in stunned silence.
"Whoops!" Says Kai, "I guess I just tried to catch it with a fireball? I'm sorry Nya, I know you worked really hard on those."
Maya goes to pick up what is left of the box, opening it to reveal the burnt cookies. "You made these yourself?" She asks.
"Yeah" says Nya "you're always talking about cookies…"
"I love it." Says Maya as she embraces Nya in a hug. Nya looks relieved and hugs her back.
"I just had a great idea!" Says Kai, "since these ones are burnt, maybe you could make some more together."
"I'd like that." Says Nya sheepishly.
"So would I." says Maya.
