As they wrapped up their first real quest as a family, they exited the cave with smiles adorned. Naofumi felt he was so right to of embraced the word. It felt about as good as when he accepted Raphtalia fully. He wasn't alone. Not even close. He had a family by his side, who'd always be there. He had several allies which now included the witch in his eyes. He had all the villagers he helped and will help moving forward. Every day he was winning more and more.

-Melromarc Embassy in Faubrey-
...
The queen was at her desk writing another almost identical letter to the last 15 ones she wrote setting up yet another meeting between people who wanted her dead. It has become a daily thing. A soft breeze made its way into the room. She smiled and placed the quill down.
"Please tell me things went smoothly"
"..."
"You can't possibly be serious." She had yet to turn to face her shadow, yet her frustration was clearly visible.
"Upon arrival, princess Malty had already had a royal decree issuing the spear hero as the lord of Lute Village. The people complained and so she had the knights bare their steel against them"
The queen spun in her chair. She said nothing, but her eyes said 'continue'
"It didn't get a chance to escalate further. The shield hero was there and his party defended the citizens... and he said some rather unpleasant things about the royalty..."
The queen whipped out her fan and covered her mouth, "What did he say?"
"I believe he was mockingly quoting either the king or princess Malty when he said, 'No right or authority' is how you royals treat everyone."
"So there's no doubt then? He hates us."
"He said this before he knew you granted him lordship."
"and after?"
"...Malty challenge the shield hero to a race, yet another spear vs shield. The shield hero won this time."
"Dammit! It makes it look less like a gift the way that went... but what's done is done. I'm sure he'll make a serviceable lord."
The shadow broke character and sighed. The queen stared.
"You can not mean..."
"The shield hero declined the lordship. Upon his victory, he granted it back to the previous lord, saying something to the effect of he lacked the experience to govern a recovering village."
"He does have the people at the forefront of his mind... At least that nature of his remains... anything else?"
"Two bits of news. Firstly, the shield hero left the village the following day. He seems to want to make money selling his medicine as a merchant."
"It may earn him the coin he'd need for gear... if barely."
"Secondly, that beast he has is dangerous."
"Hmm?" She seemed not all that concerned , but felt like letting them continue
"It's a large dangerous looking chimera. Listening in on their conversations... It's origin is from the very wave that nearly destroyed the same village."
Now the queen cared, "H-Wh-..."
"While the shield hero was racing, multiple caster launched spells against him under princess Malty's order. Two of them were eaten mostly alive by it. It's large, can fly, has parabolic poison and can sneak up on it's enemies."
"And it actually listens to the shield hero? Slave crest?"
"It's as obedient as a shadow my queen, but no evidence of a crest."
"Now he's on the move. My foolish daughter will not leave him alone and further seems to love pitting heroes against one another. And now a remnant of that wave is being raise by the shield hero..."
"For now the shield hero seems to still want to stay within Melromarc, so-"
The queen sighed and began to speak in a relaxed tone she did not often use when speaking to shadows, "We experience nothing but losses it seems... I can't pinpoint his location at any given moment, so my plan has to change again... He has to use a wave beast because we give him nothing... Even worse, the lowest slave and evil monster are apparently great companions that are more than useful. What need does he have for us? We have no leverage at all..."
"That only leaves one real option, then."
"Yes, it might be the only way to improve his opinion... But I might still send Melty. Even if all she does is keep her father in check. It's worth consideration... Monitor the shield hero. I want to know where he goes and what he does. I also need at least three more shadows at the capital. Five, if you can spare it. Dismissed.
She turned to continue writing the letter, but passed grabbing the quill. She instead grabbed a bottle of wine and began drinking straight from the bottle.

-The capital of Melromarc-
...
They headed through the city gates again, rather early too after having to camp once on the way back. The whole group followed the witch back to her shop to see a few people waiting out in front of it. Eager customers needing something while her shop had to be ran by an assistant on shorter hours. As she approached and people greeted her, Naofumi noticed one of the customers waiting. It was the mage from Motoyasu's group. He did his best to act like he had no idea who she was, but she already noticed him.
"Calm down all of you. I'll open the shop in just a moment." She motioned Naofumi and the others to enter her shop while the waiting customer complained. The witch quickly set up the ore on the spinning wheel and readied the spindle.
"Each of you must spin this to make your thread. I'd say a basket full a piece ought do it. Now-" She set Filo up first then motioned the others to her front desk. What she did next confused them. She pulled out her crystal ball again
"I'd like to attempt to see young Monti's affinity again."
Naofumi considered this, "So you saw it too?"
She nodded, "Indeed and I believe it's possible"
She motioned for Monti to place his hands on her crystal ball once more. Moments later she chuckled. "It's as I thought! He has a lightning affinity!"
Raphtalia put two and two together. "To gain an affinity... Is that possible?"
"There have been a few cases, but this one makes quite a bit of sense in retrospect. Monti is still growing in a way Filo is not. He isn't fully defined. He will likely lack in ways others normally don't, but will gain them through that odd ability of his... oh."
She pulled herself away from solving that mystery to grab 3 more books. She placed them at the counter.
"This is a novice wind grimoire and a novice lightning grimoire. I also had this old book as well. It's a collection of old stories. Had I known you couldn't read back then, I'd of given it to you then. It should be a good book for your kids to start with and some of the stories within will let you know of some common sense stuff about our world that you might not know."
Naofumi scowled. Then reached start pulling coin out.
"That's quite alright dear-"
"No. You've been a great help, but I can't continue taking advantage of you. I'm paying."
The grimoires were 75 silver a piece according to her. The thread was 30 silver per basket. The prices were high, but they still got the feeling that she was low-balling them, not that they'd know better. After that, she opened the shop. The rest of the party waited until Filo was done. Her thread was a light breezy color. It really did suit her. Next Monti sat down and he noticed right away that his thread was a shade close to the flat purple of his wings and tail.
The customers came in and nearly all of them eyed the party. Either they wanting to know who was getting the preferential treatment or they saw Monti's and Filo's extra appendages and that they were wearing sheets and so stopped to gawk. The mage from Motoyasu's party was the last customer in. She badly pretended to not pay attention to them, but couldn't help looking at the kids.
She unexpectedly asked the question out loud, "Excuse me, but what are they exactly? demi-human beastmen half breeds?"
Raphtalia responded, "No. they are not..."
"Then what are they exactly? I've never seen someone like either of them."
Naofumi did not want to give Motoyasu any information. Though he was acting as a puppet for the royalty, he was already inches from being considered an enemy. He stepped forward.
"They're my kids. So I'd appreciate it if you'd leave them be and go." He figured if she was anything like Motoyasu, then she'd refuse and he'd get the shop owner involved.
She flinched, then bowed slightly. "Ah, that was rather rude. Excuse me."
Naofumi stood there a moment. This was such an obvious response and he was completely taken off guard by it. It was almost like dealing with Motoyasu made him dumber. He remained in that spot for a few seconds. The girl bought two books and left without another word. After the shop was empty Naofumi returned to his senses. He looked down at Monti who had also completed his basket.
He and Raphtalia could get their additions at some other time. Right now was too perfect with all the customers gone. He approached the witch again.
"All done then? Make sure to go to the tailor down the main road. She's... interesting, but also the best I've seen"
"With the thread? Yes. And I will take your advice..., but I had one last thing to ask of you, it wont cost a thing."
She saw his face twisted in a less than nice grin, but she knew him as a good person and pressed on, "What could that be shield hero?"
Naofumi leaned in and whispered, "Raphtalia was ten years old before I got her, demi-humans and all that... So someone has to give her 'The Talk'..."
She leaned back and stared at him a moment. Her own evil grin started forming, "You're quite something to ask that... But such viciousness will of course have retaliation."
Naofumi was confused. What would she be able to do to him? Nothing too bad. Right?
"Raphtalia dear, I'll be borrowing you for the next two-no, three hours."
Raphtalia was confused and Naofumi was panicking. "Three hours!? The talk does not take that long! What kind of evil things will she put in her head in that time!?"
Raphtalia looked at Naofumi, he looked like he was in stress suddenly. He was also not making eye contact with her. She was becoming worried herself.
"N-Naofumi-sama? What's going on?"
He walked over to the kids and said, "Alright, mom will be back later." Both waved to her as Naofumi started walking them out. Raphtalia went to follow, but the witch was already next to her. She glanced at her, fearing what she needed from her.
"Y-yes?"
"What a wicked thing to request of me... I'm almost proud." She turned to Raphtalia with a menacing smile, "So, it seems that despite sharing his bed, your are quite ignorant of things?"
...
-The tailor's shop-
...
They did not so much as enter the shop when they heard their newest problem and solution.
"Wwaaaaahh! Are these my latest customers!?" The women yelled running up to them. She immediately got in their faces, eyes sparkling.
"This is the best! A lovely little angel!? And a matching handsome little devil!?"
She went between the two in frantic glee. After a few moments, she glared at Naofumi.
"How can you have such precious little things wear sheets! That has to be a sin! What kind of father would do this to their children!?"
Naofumi was becoming more than a little irritated with her, but she also assumed correctly that he was their father. The only person to guess it right. It'd hurt the whole family's feelings if they had to declare their familial bond every time. So he let some of her yelling slide.
"That's why I'm here. They tear their cloths when they transform. I've brought magic thread... Are you the tailor?"
She tilted her face to hide her eyes within the glare of her glasses. She then began a soft laugh that grew and grew into the laugh of a mad man.
"Transforming cloths!? So that means you want a custom order!? I get to create little masterpieces to bring out their incredible features!"
Naofumi was finding her annoying, but her energetic mood went well with Filo and Monti was so happy to be praised. Naofumi had to grab his tail as it began to wag. Unlike Raphtalia, his tail was a deadly weapon.
"Yeah, sure. Listen I do want them to have good cloths, it really matters to me. I need to know the cost though."
She suddenly became almost normal not raising her voice in the slightest. "When does it need to be done?"
"As soon as possible, I'd like to leave town tomorrow."
"Oh, that'd be 15 silver per outfit. I usually charge 10 silver for a custom order outfit for children's size, but I'm going to need to pull an all-nighter for this... You understand?"
"30 silver? They better be worth the coin..."
She took their measurements and Naofumi and Filo got to snicker as Monti shied away from the tailor as she took more of the 'delicate' measurements. After he gave her the thread and half the money upfront, they left. Outside Naofumi thought to go to Erhart's, but now was just the right time to visit Beloukas. He requested to see Monti after he hatched and now would be an ideal time to visit since he could avoid taking Raphtalia. She said it didn't bother her, but he knew better.
"Well we have somewhere else to stop by real quick, let's hurry."
As he traveled, he saw more guards out than normal and they were in groups of five, not the usual pairs. He put his shield under his cloak and changed it to his new [Nue Raccoon Shield] and used [Inconspicuous]. He didn't know for a fact they were looking for him. Still, he kept a low profile, just in case.
...
Beloukas's slave shop.
...
"As promised, these are the results of both of those eggs."
Beloukas sat in his chair, stunned if but a moment. Then a grin overcame him and he laughed.
"This truly is more that I expected!"
Naofumi had no problem with his enthusiasm. Compared to that tailor, it was nothing. Naofumi also felt a little glad that his simply believed him. Even though he said something that'd seem ludicrous to anyone else, Beloukas just accepted the statement as fact and moved along.
"Do you two mind transforming for me?"
They both did with a nod and Beloukas was speechless for another moment.
"This is... She's a filolial, but so large. And she can transform too... I think I know what she might actually be."
"A filolial queen, right?"
He grinned wider, "Oh, so you know? Then it must really be the case. They say there are filolial queens that hide within their flock and command them using their royal authority."
Naofumi was impressed he guess right and even knew some trivia. He might not need the man's slave services anymore, but as a monster trainer and seller he still was plenty useful to Naofumi.
"Do regular monsters really care about that kinda stuff?"
"You mean you don't know? Royal monsters have [Royal Authority], as in an ability that allows them to heavily influence those of the same race, but lower class."
One quick check in his menu revealed that Filo didn't have such an ability, but maybe she was still too young for such a power.
"And this one. What an intimidating image he displays! Does the tail actual have venom? Can he fly?"
"Monti has two different types of venom, one deadly, one parabolic. And yes he can fly. We actually haven't had a chance to see how well he flies while carrying others, but he seems to handle well enough. Bird-like multi-hour flights are out of the question though."
He was maybe being a little too open with Beloukas
Filo piped up, "So, um, dad. Who is this man?"
"He's the man I bought your egg from. Without him I'd never of got you."
Filo seemed to lighten up a bit after that. Naofumi and Beloukas spoke for a bit. He wanted to tell his customers that he provided the shield hero with a filolial queen. Naofumi said it was fine. Even suggested that he word it vaguely to imply that he possible provided both eggs, but not direct lie and say he did. The conversation stayed on business as Beloukas offer to secure special weapons for his kids. Naofumi told him when the wave was going to hit. Telling him to have them ready before then as he planned on returning to the capital prior to that to upgrade all the party's equipment.
"You did choose a poor time to come though. Why return when the guards are out in force?"
"I'm likely the reason they're out in force. Who knows what that bitch is lying about now."
"Not to worry. You are not the cause customer, some noblemen were poisoned yesterday is all."
"You talk about that so casually... Who were the victims exactly?"
"The heads of three noble families. Big ones too. Worse still is that two of them were known for their strong loyalty to the crown. All three fought alongside the king in the last war, that's how they gained nobility in the first place."
"If they were pro-royalty, then at least the royalty didn't do it..."
"What makes you think they wont blame me like they always do?"
He lightly chuckled, "I don't think it's likely. The king will want the real killer and there are witnesses. It was one of Melromarc's very own knights according to those witnesses. Current orders are kill on sight, capture if able."
"Well as long as it has nothing to do with us... All the same I'll keep my head down"
"Wise move, I'd say."
They spoke a bit longer. He told Beloukas about his large haul of rare crystal ore. Asked if he knew any customers looking for a supply. They talked a bit. Naofumi agreed to leave 50 pounds of crystal ore with Beloukas. He'd receive either 5 silver per pound with Beloukas keeping the rest or have the remaining supplies returned to him. The three of them parted soon after.
...
-Erhart's shop-
...
Erhart eyed them entering the shop, noticing them still wearing sheets. He also noticed how they hung to his sleeves, all smiles. He sighed.
"So I see you weren't able to get any magic cloths... and where little miss Raphtalia at."
"They'll have their outfits tomorrow actually and Raphtalia... Is getting some instruction right now."
"I see, so what do you need?"
Naofumi told him about the need for the ore and the quest to get it. He also asked Erhart to store some of the ore in the back for now. Erhart seemed fine with it. The conversation turned to business.
"I need a new sword for Raphtalia. The one she has now is okay, but she will outgrow it soon."
"Easy enough, anything else?" He said as he looked through his swords for one of the right weight and height for her. It also had to be better than the last one, while also being within their budget. Monti also started looking around the shop a bit. Filo right behind him, trying to make him play with her.
Naofumi leaned in a little, "I actually had a rough idea that we really can't afford now, but I'd like to get later. Materials will be the biggest concern."
Erhart stopped his search and looked at a piece of paper the Naofumi wrote some notes and a sketch onto.
"... Kid... this would cost at least 5 gold"
Naofumi smiled, "Probably closer to 10 gold if we're being honest."
"And for this? That's such a waste."
"Only the best for my kids." Naofumi said with a straight face. Erhart reacted to that statement, checking Naofumi's eyes. He found something there and laughed.
"Well they would destroy it if it was made too cheaply"
Monti and Filo both tried to peek at the note, but Naofumi stopped them.
"It's a surprise, don't ruin it." Monti nodded, Filo pouted.
They spoke briefly and Naofumi bought the sword. He only just held it when the front door opened revealing a blushing Raphtalia all but squirming in place.
Naofumi didn't see her, but he felt her. He had no intentions of turning around. He didn't want to to face her.
"Hi mom, finally back?" Filo asked, not knowing, or more accurately not caring about the mood.
Raphtalia was barely listening as she walked in and stopped several feet behind Naofumi. For his part, he finally turned around to see her in a state of complete humiliation. She was blushing so deeply it almost looked like she was sun burnt, She had watery eye yet looked like she'd yet to cry. Her arms were straight by her side, her hands in tight fists.
"Um... I ah, got you a new sword..." Naofumi couldn't think. His normally manipulative brain took one look at her charming and currently vulnerable tanuki features and parts of his brain seemed to shut off.
"Thanks..." She couldn't say much else.
"What's wrong mom? Did something happen with the nice witch lady?" Monti asked in concern.
"I-I'm fine. I think I'm just tired."
"But it's not even midday yet." Filo pouted
She turned to the pair, "...Tell you what? Why don't you two have some fun outside of town? The monsters around here are really weak, so you should be fine. Just return to Erhart's before its dark".
Filo nearly jumped with joy at the opportunity to play. Monti didn't seem all that excited by the prospect, but Filo was already strong-arming him towards the door. He could of used his tail to hold him down, but he had learned one of the truths of this world.
Filo gets what Filo wants.
He resigned himself to his fate. He gave his parents one parting look as he was mercilessly drug from the shop to who knows where.
With the door closing, Raphtalia stared daggers at Naofumi who seemed to act like that alone dealt him damage. He looked to Erhart for support, but he'd already walked to the other end of the counter and was looking at Naofumi like he'd already taken Raphtalia's side before hearing one word of it. He was cornered.
"I'm sorry, but I just could not of been the one to tell you. You have to understand. Just imagine how much worse it'd be if it was me giving you 'the talk'."
Now knowing what the altercation was about, Erhart burst into laughter for just a moment before Raphtalia's cold glare switched to him. He did his best to kill the laughter, but was only able to reduce it to chuckles.
"We... We can discuss this later... What about their cloths?" She was being merciful by changing the subject and he knew it.
"They will be done tomorrow, 30 silver total, I know it's a lot, but she has to work through the night so it seemed fair."
"So what do you plan to do the rest of the day?"
Naofumi couldn't tell if this was a trick, but he told her anyways. He planned to go around to the spots he knew herb grew and collect what he could. He also told her of his present idea for the kids. She nodded along, but really seemed like she was somewhere else. They soon departed and spent their day as planned for a time.
The pair quietly went about their collecting of herbs for a few hours, but was interrupted when something caught Naofumi's eye. Monti's Hp went down just a hair. He immediately used [Tele-communications] to connect the party and speak to Monti.
"What's going on? Why'd you get hurt?"
"Um how do I explain?" He seemed to be asking Filo.
"A guy made of bones attacked us, but we beat him up real easy"
"...What?"
"It's like she said. We were playing and a skeleton wearing weird armor came out from behind a tree and swung his axe at me. Filo shattered him in one hit. No problem dad."
Naofumi used his map to find their location. He and Raphtalia exchanged looks, then left to meet them.
They arrived quickly and when they took a look at the skeleton, it was as they thought. Before them was a zombie from the wave with most of it's flesh removed by the elements. The odd armor made it unmistakable.
"This makes no sense. How and why would a lone zombie still be around?" Raphtalia asked
"It must have to do with the zombie corpses that vanished the morning after the wave?... Maybe those things revive themselves? After a set amount of time? But then we'd of heard of deaths..." Naofumi had all kinds of theories he could present, but he couldn't prove any of it.
They decided to track where it came from for a bit. It didn't come from the direction of Lute Village which made little sense. Along the path were the leathery remains of balloons it must of fought. It all seemed so odd. Raphtalia went as far as pose the idea that they aren't from the wave at all. Naofumi then took out a helmet drop from his drops list and compared them. An exact match.
Monti Questioned his drops list and was told that Naofumi had nearly two full sets of the crude armor the zombies had, several crude axes and swords all from the interdimensional zombies. He also had a better bulkier set of armor without a helmet and two large axes from the interdimensional giant zombies. He just doesn't want to remove them from the list, because they can't be put back and so would then take up [Inventory] weight. Filo excitedly asked about the Nue drops, but was disappointed that he received none. Naofumi hated having to catch them up and so promised to keep them updated on anything cool or important he got.
They agreed that there wasn't really anything else they could discover or do for now. They took so long investigating that that it was beginning to get dark. They returned to town with little fuss. Mostly due to Naofumi wanting to maintain their low profile while this whole poisoned nobles mess was sorted out. They stopped to eat at a tavern Naofumi had yet to visit and left soon after. As soon as they entered the inn, Raphtalia turned to Naofumi.
"Naofumi-sama? Could we perhaps get a second room? Just for tonight."
He felt like he'd have to give her space whenever she asked. She was probably still very embarrassed and didn't want to be in a position like that, now knowing the implications. He was disappointed though. Sleeping next to her had kept her nightmares away and it was the only way he could let his defenses down enough to get any good sleep.
"Sure... If that's what you want."
He rented the two rooms and handed Raphtalia one of the keys. She gave him a grateful look before turning to Monti and Filo.
"Here you two go. You get your own room tonight, please try not to disturb us. Okay?"
Naofumi went from disappointment to complete panic. "Oh fuck! Why!? She wants us to be alone! There's no way she could adjust this quickly! There's no way she's emotionally ready! There's no way I am emotionally ready!"
While he was lost in his head, Raphtalia grabbed his hand and guided him to their room. It was only once he was in front of the door that Naofumi reclaimed his senses. He turned to Monti and Filo waving goodnight and he half waved back with a look of desperation on his face. Once Monti's and Filo's door was closed, Raphtalia spoke.
"Let's hurry inside" She said it like it was nothing.
"Um, Raphtalia? We need to talk. Listen I know tha-" She reached passed him and opened the door and entered ahead of him. He was so lost. He stopped talking and just started thinking of a way out of this. Raphtalia saw him standing there, not entering the room. She walked back over to him with a sigh and drug him in and shut the door.
"H-hey! Raphtalia! Stop, we need to talk."
"I agree" She locked eyes with him. Naofumi didn't know what to think or say. Normally her intentions were so easy to decipher, but now? He had no earthly idea. He began to sweat and fidget. His inexperience in the romance department was easy to read even to Raphtalia.
She began, "What you did today was cruel."
"So this is payback... This is that witches doing! Why did I ever cross her!?"
"It was certainly information I needed to know... and I can see why neither of us could currently have the talk ourselves."
"So it's not payback? Dammit, FIlo break something in the next room, give me an excuse to escape!"
"Though I'm very glad I received that information and the witch was... well versed to explain it to me."
"Nope! I can't! Raphtalia is the brave one here!"
"Naofumi-sama. Please look at me"
"..." He complied
"What exactly do you think is going to happen in this room?"
At this point his thoughts were not words as much as vague feelings swirling around inside of him. Raphtalia was being very patient with him, but she had her limits.
"If you were going to refuse to talk to me... I'd of rather not known."
"I-I just don't know what you want me to say." His brain was too busy for deceit.
"We will get to what I want later. What do you want?"
He had to be honest with her. "I needed you to have 'the talk' so I didn't have to feel guilty about sharing a bed with you at night. I just didn't want it to be a situation of me taking advantage of your ignorance."
She smiled "That is so very 'you' to want that... Naofumi-sama I don't consider our sleeping arrangement to be any form of violation or you taking advantage of me. It was simply a way for us to give comfort to one another. That is all it was at the time. You should know that I see you for who you truly are. That you'd never do that to me or anyone else... She told me about what the princess accused you of."
"Yeah... pretty funny considering how I'm acting in a room alone with you, huh?"
"I figured that those lies might also affect you, that it may be another emotional hurtle we'd have to overcome. So I just wanted you to know... That I'm here for you."
Naofumi looked relieved "That's it? And here I thought the witch put you up to something awful."
"So let's get some sleep, okay?"
As they got ready for bed both of them are still a little embarrassed, but they were in far better shape than they were. After the lights were off and they were under the covers, Raphtalia suddenly moved. She put herself on top of him. He flashed a look of shock that she couldn't see. She then kissed him for a long six seconds.
"W-what was that for?"
"Well I found out that kisses truly have a zero percent pregnancy rate. So I figures there's no reason not to."
"O-oh..."
"and this-" She kissed him again, this time he was a little less apprehensive. The moment he began to get into it, she acted on the plan.
"Was that tongue!?"
She pulled away again, "and that was from the witch, she said you'd be soft enough that even something like that would get you. And she said not to trifle with her again or she'd teach me something worse."
Naofumi actually laughed at that. The witch got him good, his heart skipped a beat. "She is the worst possible enemy for me."
They both quieted and went back to their sleeping positions. Several minutes passed. Naofumi should of been thinking about what that zombie meant or who poisoned those nobles, but all he could think was how couldn't wait to kiss her again.
.
[Author's Notes]
No Bio-plant this time. I decided to slow things down and focus more on building the family and setting more plot alterations that will become relevant later.
I'm thinking of Monti's outfit being a little suit with coattails, but I have no idea what his outfit would turn into while he is in beast form, please give me your suggestions.
This is about as close to Lemons as I want to get. They may sleep together later in my story, but that would be more of a 'fade to black' sorta thing
Please leave a review.
