The Name 'Liviccic' is pronounced 'Liviskis'

The family met up in front of the mine.

"Alright. Let's do this." Naofumi announced as they began marching into the undead infested mine.

...

They slowly made their way through the mine. Naofumi took center point, Leon right behind him. Raphtalia was to Naofumi's right and Filo to Naofumi's left. Monti to Leon's right, Teal to Leon's left.

They were cautious and wanted to maximize Leon's safety. The skeletons were still capable of dealing damage to him after all.

As they went further in, there were branching tunnels. To not be caught from behind, they needed to check everyone of them. which would be done by either Raphtalia and Monti if it was to the right or Filo and Teal if it was to the left.

Their movements were slow and smart, but they seemed to not fine a single skeleton or anything else that was dangerous within the mines.

Then they came upon two large doors. They were silver and black, a laughing skull carved into each side. The doors looked thick and strong, but as they were now, they thought themselves strong enough to simply muscle their way through.

Raphtalia swung her sword, but the door stood firm. Her swing dealt no damage at all.

There was a brief pause before she moved out of the way and Monti, Filo, and Teal stepped up. They all used their best attacks together.

Monti cast [Arc Discharge]

Filo used [High Quick] then converted it into force with [Blow Back].

Teal mixed her acid and base midair, causing [Reaction Explosion].

Their attacks collided with the gate and a ringing was heard as well as felt by everyone. The attacks kicked up a lot of dust and they waited to see the result.

...It was still there. All they did was knock the dust off it.

That made the party stop and have to consider this as an actual obstacle. While the kids discussed their options, Naofumi used [Inspect] on the door.

[Gate of Sacrifice]

[It houses a great amount of curse magic]

After hearing that information Naofumi looked at the surroundings of the door. Just in front of the gate was a circle.

"So you gotta kill someone here to open it?"

He broke from his thoughts and spoke with the others.

"According to my shield, this is called the 'gate of sacrifice' and is a type of cursed item... I think the way it works is you kill something in the circle and it opens..."

The others thought a moment, then Teal spoke.

"Maybe we can us the Bioplant seeds? Make a brainless monster and kill it here?"

Everyone nodded and they proceed to try it. As the seconds old monster hit the ground within the circle, nothing happened. Of course it was a failure.

After a 'boo' from Filo to announce her disappointment, they all got quiet again, before Raphtalia spoke up.

"Well, whatever we do, we will not sacrifice anything higher than a brainless creature... Can your shield not bypass this somehow?"

While the question was directed at Naofumi, Teal answered.

"Of all the shields he has the only ones I think can help us now are his [Saw Shield] and that ability [Sunder]. The first does durability damage, so it might help... If the second can't, then nothing can, but it's once a day and we still have to deal with whatever is behind it."

Naofumi spoke after her, "Your forgetting of a more fundamental ability Teal, you're slipping"

Naofumi smirked as he just walked up to the gate and touched the gem to it. The gem began to faintly glow green.

Suddenly the door was being destroyed, no. It was being absorbed into the shield.

Monti was in shock, "Of course. the shield can absorb anything, no matter how hard the material or how magical! It just needs to be an item and make physical contact with the gem!"

Naofumi wasn't expecting to unlock anything, but that third one concerned him greatly. It felt like the shield he used against Gaelion. "Because it had curses on it?"

With the door removed the party peered further in, which seemed unnaturally dark.

"Listen up. There will definitely be problems further in. Stay together. No matter what." Naofumi announced as he resumed his frontal position.

Once everyone took their old spots, they advanced. Only 10 or so steps in and something was wrong. It was so dark that they couldn't see anything at all. It was really cold for no reason too and they found that they couldn't hear one another.

Naofumi could bypass the last one with [Tele-communication].

"Allow me." Raphtalia said.

She began a chant that some of them recognized, then finished with [Anti-Bind]!

The cold went away, the area brightened and their hearing returned.

"Wow mother, when did you learn that?" Teal was impressed

"Anti or counter magic requires you to understand the magic being cast. Basically you should be able to cancel a spell that you can cast yourself. Though canceling a spell is harder than casting it. We're just lucking I know some binding spells." Raphtalia explained.

"So I can learn to cancel other lightning magic?..." Monti was always eager to improve

"I was just gonna blow it away with wind, but I wanted to give everyone else a chance first" Filo said sneaking a glance at Leon.

Leon seemed to be more focused on what Raphtalia did. The act of canceling magic seemed crazy cool to him.

Naofumi went to speak, "Good job, Raph-"

[Alert! Danger Imminent!]

"Everyone! Get down!" Naofumi yelled as he braced himself.

Everyone did as they were told. Only a second later something they couldn't see seemed to of struck Naofumi and started to push him back. After pushing him five feet or so, it stopped. A thin string-like strand fell to the ground near him.

"Something that small had that much force?" Naofumi was very concerned. Whatever they were facing absolutely could fight them evenly.

Naofumi couldn't see the opponent, but his [Minimap] did. According to it... The enemy was now above them!

Naofumi looked up and saw a giant spider. It was heavily armored in white chitin and was a long spindling spider, not thick or furry.

It dropped from the ceiling aiming to land on Filo. At the same time skeletons were heard running at them from deeper in.

Naofumi used [Shield Prison] on the spider, then used [Second Shield] to use [Air Strike Shield] at an angle tilted towards further in the cave above Filo.

"Fuck, shit, ow, stop, stop, I'm gonna throw up."

The ball containing the spider fell and hit the barrier, which caused it to roll off and continue rolling into and over some of the skeletons as they tried to run at the party.

While the skeletons were down the rest of the party sprang at them, down them in a single hit, two to three for Leon.

The engagement seemed to be going well, but something was weird. All the skeletons they were now fighting didn't have on that armor they did before. The armor they wore during the wave or the other times they were encountered. "Why?"

[Alert! Danger Imminent!]

Naofumi took a look deeper and ducked.

A purple and black smoke and slag ball shot out and missed him.

"That was a spell, be ready. Filo. Go wild, I'll recall you."

Filo gave a half glance to Leon to watch her as she transformed into her full form. She was allowed to go off on the enemies.

She used [High Quick] and was destroying the skeletons one after the other. She had defeated her tenth skeleton before the first hit the ground.

The family watched her with a sense of awe and/or jealousy at her going all out.

"Follow her" Was all Naofumi said as he kept moving forward.

After a nearly 30 skeletons, Filo was brought back to Naofumi's side using [Knock Knock]. The party watched as another spell missed as a result and more white thread missed as well.

"That proves it... Whoever is casting spells in the back is working with that spider. Teal, your next."

They were getting what Naofumi was doing. The enemy was playing too cautiously. Only attacking when they are sure they'll hit. They also don't value these skeletons at all and seem to not care how many are beaten. So Naofumi was switching up the lead, forcing the enemy to have to see what this new foe can do before they can take their guaranteed shot.

This gave them more time to lower the skeleton count and give Naofumi time to think.

Teal lashed out at the skeletons with wide sweeping attacks from sharpened vines. She also used a horsetrap mouth at one point, but she kept her number of abilities shown as low as she could. She had more options than Filo, but stamina bond her unlike Filo.

The moment she slowed down the white string came to surround her, then as soon as the web began to touch her body the spider began to drop onto Teal as it tried to on Filo.

[Liberation]

The web around Teal broke off and she transformed her arm into a large bark-skinned arm before trying to punch the spider out of the air.

It created a spider web shield held by each of it's limbs to catch the blow and rebind her.

[Blightning]

The spider was struck just before it could land on Teal. The pary went in for the kill, but suddenly the whole mine was washed full of minor curses from the back as a boy stepped into view.

In front of him were the skeletons form the wave, behind him the large skeletons from the wave.

The boy had eight sets of bones tied to each section of his arms and legs. He had smaller bones tied to his cloak in eight rows, three down the front and back, one down each arm.

Upon seeing him, Naofumi felt he'd seen this kid before, but couldn't remember.

[Banshee's Wail] The boy yelled out and a force seemed to of struck Teal.

"Leave her alone! Leave us both alone!" The boy yelled.

The curse caused Teal extreme pain. It was unreal, like a fantasy pain that couldn't exist. It did no damage though. After trying to hold it in a moment, Teal screamed out in pain and as if triggering something over half her Hp was gone and her body was heavily damaged, the fake pain left her.

[Gamble]

Naofumi used his best healing option. He won the flip. Teal was okay again, but her mind was still recoiling from the pain.

By the time the party reached Teal, the spider made it's way back to the boy's side.

There was a brief stare down

The boy spoke first. "If you passed my gate, that means you're an evil lot... I wont go easy on you."

The boy tried his best to sound intimidating and with the swirling curses around him, he kinda did. Naofumi ruined that though.

"Ah, that's it! You're that little crybaby I saw at the guild!" Naofumi announced out loud, remembering him.

The curses around the boy disappeared as he stopped using magic to yell back, "That's a lie, I've never cried a day in my life! Liar!"

The atmosphere in the tunnel was suddenly less serious.

"Oh yeah you were. You couldn't get paid and was throwing a little fit." Naofumi was arguing, but was also ready to continue the moment things picked back up.

The boy stopped denying Naofumi's claim, his mood changed.

"So you're with the guild? They learned of this place?"

"Wrong. I'm here to mine this damned place legally." Naofumi whipped out his letter "And I want to know what all this skeleton nonsense is about."

"...If the guild doesn't know then it's fine. We just gotta silence you people!"

[Seeking Skulls]

Two floating skulls appeared in front of him. They seemed to not leave his side.

"Careful, they're quite strong. About as strong as me" The spider spoke, throwing the whole party off.

"Wait. That spider is a royal?" Raphtalia questioned

The boy looked towards her, "To know that so quickly... You people are a threat. Sophia, we gotta use full force."

"Don't order me around little boy..., but agreed."

[Collapsing Thread]

The spider launched a web near them. The moment it landed she was there and breathed poison at the party. The skeletons marched forward and the boy and those two floating skulls followed.

Filo used [Fast Tornado] to easily blow away the poison as Teal tried to follow up the with her vines.

[Steel Thread]

Teal's vines were caught, then cut through, she retreated a bit and the spider tried to advance on her.

Raphtalia stepped in swinging her sword wide to force it to back off.

As the skeletons reached the party Naofumi took point. The skeletons were too weak, their attacks triggered [Hazard]. They were destroying themselves on him. However, a momentary carelessness caused Naofumi to not notice one of those skulls that were next to the boy had made it over to him and exploded, knocking him flat on his ass and dealing some damage.

"This kid can heavily wound Teal and even overcome my defense..."

Monti jumped in front of where Naofumi fell and transformed into his full form. Using the larger tail he had in this form, he began sweeping the skeletons to the side.

The boy was stunned "This presence... but that makes no sense!"

The boy launched the second skull at Monti, but before it made it half the distance, it exploded, having been struck by one of Raphtalia's knives.

"Foolish girl, I'm right her." The spider taunted Raphtalia for losing focus. Raphtalia thought she had the time, but-

[Sticky Thread]

Her sword was caught on the ground. She was called out, too close and lost her range.

"Hiiissss" Leon came from behind and breathed fire on the thread destroying it instantly and heating Raphtalia's sword.

The spider was already in a lunge from when she thought she won. She used [Collapsing Thread] on the wall behind her. She was worried the thread wouldn't reach the wall in time, but Raphtalia seemed not to want to go for a lethal blow. The moment the web connected, she was on the wall.

"...You had me there, why didn't you follow through?" Sophia was confused.

"I have no intention of killing you. I'll avoid it if I can help it." Raphtalia said as she motioned Leon to stay behind her.

"Yet you went for the kill a bit ago?" She wasn't buying it.

"I didn't know you were a royal then." Was the only response.

"Wha..." Sophia started putting the pieces together.

"The girl over there turned into a fat filolial earlier, this dragon is likely a royal too. Maybe that plant thing is too... Meaning one of these people is probably a hero! Then that one... Is that a fucking wave monster!? A wave boss!?"

She changed tactics

"Which one of you is the hero?" She plainly asked

"Naofumi over there, he's the shield hero." Raphtalia had no idea how the spider found that out. She also hated saying that out loud, but if it caused aggro to focus Naofumi, it helped the kids further.

The spider responded by using her web to head toward Naofumi

After the dust settled, the boy saw Monti still standing there. He was a little unnerved. His army was low, he misunderstood his attack being caught early as Monti tanking it without damage. He was going to need to do something even bigger.

As he began to cast a larger spell, Sophia returned to his side.

"Cease the fighting boy, the shield hero is among them."

The boy slowed the progression of his cast, but didn't stop.

"Bullshit, look at that? It gives off the same sense as that wave boss from the second wave. My magic sense is never wrong."

"I'm not going to argue with you boy. Stop your spell now."

"How many times have I told you, you aren't the boss of me. I'll take out the wave boss, then we'll go from there."

Curses from the fallen skeletons gathered in the boy's hand. The force was enough to have kill Leon outright if it hit him and approaching greater levels of lethality. The party gathered up as Naofumi put himself in front. He was about to layer shields between them when-

"Oh? I'm absolutely the boss of you, little boy~."

The spider transformed into a girl with pure white hair and faded red eyes. She had four of her original spider legs coming from her mid back. She was well beyond beautiful and appeared between the age of 17 to 18... and she was completely naked. Which made sense with no magical clothing and all.

She grabbed the boy from behind in a less than innocent way and he started panicking.

"Alright, alright. Stop. I'm stopping! Please Sophie" The curses disappeared.

This childish display ruined the whole evil necromancer vibe completely for the party. There was no way this guy was some super cool wizard. He wasn't cool at all.

"Dear god, the pheromones coming off those two" Teal muttered.

Naofumi did his best to ignore it.

"So, what the hell? You come at us like that and now wanna pack it up? You ain't getting away."

Sophia looked up to Naofumi a moment, staring at the shield. She cast some web and quickly placed a dress of web upon herself. Now clothed, she walked forward and spoke.

"It was simply a misunderstanding shield hero. I mean, you came into our love nest and all. After the measures we took to be left alone, of course those that enter here will be assumed as hostile."

Something about the way she walked and talked. To Naofumi, she seemed far older than her appearance.

"That doesn't answer my original question, what the fuck is with the skeletons?"

"..."

"Well boy, tell him."

"Stop calling me 'boy'! I have a name you know..." The boy sighed.

The boy took a more serious tone, "Shield hero. How much do you know about your situation and about this country?"

What happened next was a brief conversation about Melromarc, about the three heroes church, and about the 'shield devil'.

"So you've learned some? That makes this a bit easier... My name is Liviccic Blackcrown."

Raphtalia's ears twitched, "So that means... you're a noble?"

"Yes. My father was lord of all of Briarhaven. Ours is one of the largest and most powerful lordships in Melromarc..."

"And you're hanging out in a cave?" Naofumi asked jokingly.

"My father was assassinated and within an hour of Briarhaven receiving the news, I was driven from my home by some of townsfolk..."

Naofumi felt bad about that joke now.

"I have the very rare class of necromancer. It's so rare that very little is known about it. While father was alive he kept those who felt negatively about me for my class at bay. I was told to become an adventurer and make a name for myself as a good and helpful person. My father believed that doing so would allow me to figure out the best way to improve myself as well as improve the people's opinion of me..."

"Sounds like that didn't work." Monti said disappointingly.

"It would of, had I the time to have done more before losing my father..."

"Was your father one of the lords that was poisoned?" Naofumi asked

"Yes..."

"Then I should inform you that the announced culprit isn't guilty. That Fitts guy? Didn't do it."

"Wha-what? What do you mean he didn't do it!?" He was more than a little mad now.

"We met him. He told us his side of things. Said he was set up. Filo here can detect lies and lots of other things too. He didn't do it."

"Then who...?" The boy was lost in thought.

"Back to the original question... again, the skeletons, why?" Naofumi was getting annoyed.

"Oh, that. I was a decent level when they ran me out of town, but their were a lot of them and three of them were soldiers at level 22. I had nowhere to go and was pretty screwed. I'd done what my father said and learned a bit about my abilities, but it's really hard. Imagine being a fire mage without having a book that tells you the spells. Learning magic without assistance is incredibly hard. I learned basic magic theory from reading, but that was it. Over time I learned that even though I have a shadow affinity I can't cast anything that isn't a curse. So-"

"Kid. Get to the point."

"Oh, umm. I needed to level up. The best way to do that was to get bodies and have them farm EXP for me. I was close by when the wave hit Lute Village, though I didn't get there before it was over. I planned on snagging any bodies I saw, judge me all you want. When I found the zombies though, it was like a jackpot."

"Why? Can't you animate any body?"

"Yes, but creating an undead through my magic is even better if the creature was already an undead once before through a different means. It meant it took less Sp to make them and they lost less stats."

"Sp? You have Sp? I thought only heroes have that." Naofumi asked

"They lose stats?" Teal asked

"...You tell me to get to the point then ask random questions." He sighed "Yeah I have Sp, no Mp though, that's why I can't use normal magic at all. And yes, whatever I raise has only 50% of it's former stats, but as I said, something that was already undead is reduced to 75% instead... Same if they died from a curse, no penalties if both."

Naofumi had a rather loud thought, but said nothing. "Gaelion..."

"I raised all those that I could then went looking for somewhere to fix up these large skeletons. Some asshole took off their heads. Everyone of them, just the heads. Like why?"

Naofumi snorted and Raphtalia looked away.

"My needs lead me here. I came to slay Sophia... She beat me and tied me up until I agree to help her out."

"Oh, you loved it." She leaned on him smirking

"No, I didn't... We formed a party and we fortified ourselves in here. The skeletons count as me so, they farmed EXP and we just leveled up in here while I kept getting better at my magic... The goal became to find and kill that knight Fitts then return home and kill anyone that tried to kick me out again, but I guess the Fitts thing is a bust."

"That makes a lot of sense now. We ran into the skeletons twice after the wave. The first time it attack my son, the second time we were able to test it, it only attacks monster, right?"

"Yeah... Sorry about the attack. I thought the instructions were safe enough... By the way... How the hell do you have so many royals and a wave boss with you?"

Before Naofumi could answer, Sophia spoke.

"The fact he has multiple royals isn't odd at all, we royals only occur in monsters raise by heroes. Only by their power can we become as we are. No matter what monster he raises, it'll become a royal... as long as it's of this world." She finished looking at Monti.

"Well that also clears some things up there. As for Monti, I got him from the second wave boss, it carried his egg within it."

"Ah, so the second wave boss is his parent." Liviccic was getting it now.

Monti pointed to Naofumi and Raphtalia "No. They are my parents."

He said it seriously and with passion. That answered any questions Sophia still had.

Naofumi pat Monti's head a bit, "Of course you are."

Teal piped up, "So if you have to be raised by a hero to be a royal, then who raised you?"

Sophia seemed uninterested in answering, but did so, "I was owned by the Vassal Whip Hero about 90 years ago, maybe a bit less. That's another thing, royals live long lives. Of course I can't remember that well. Even though I was raised by that whip hero, I was only level 5 when he died. Most of the changes and benefits that come with it didn't happen to me for a really long time. I didn't really have proper intelligence until a few years ago. Once I hit level 15, I gained a level of intelligence comparable to people and started being very careful not to attract attention. I'm a rare species, a white widow. That's why that hero raised me. He raised all kinds of rare creatures. I might be the very last one by now and a royal to boot? Humans would absolutely hunt me down if they found me."

"Then why'd you show yourself to the humans in this mine earlier?" Raphtalia asked.

"After the first wave, I decided to focus on growing stronger. The wave can end me just as it'll end anyone else. I became too large to hide..., but it worked out in the end. I got my little boy here and now we're both level 40. Just gotta find a way to class upgrade..."

"Class upgrade? Is that how you push past level 40?"

"Yes. Once someone hits level 30 they can preform class upgrade. Doing so gives the user either an entirely different skill set to add to what they already got, or it lets you become even more skilled at what they already are. It also increases you stats by about 30% and increases your level cap to 100. However doing class upgrade before level 40 will stunt your growth by a lot."

"Heh, even more useful info... And that's done at the hourglasses right? I doubt the church will let us, but we gotta try. This also explains why you called the skeletons back. Them farming now, doesn't help... So Filo?"

There was a pause.

"What all did they lie about?" Naofumi clarified.

"They were completely truthful... except when he said he didn't like being tied up, that was a lie."

Everyone had a laugh at that and Sophia took hold of Liviccic as he sunk his head low.

Sophia spoke, "Okay. I like you guys now."

...

Hours passed

...

They spoke about a great many things. From the country to magic, to common sense things that Naofumi's party wouldn't know. Naofumi had Sophia explain vassal weapons to him. He was getting all kinds of useful information. Naofumi had Liviccic look at Raphtalia's curse, since he was a curse user. He said it wasn't that bad and holy water would be enough to tend to it. He used what he knew to lower the pain as much as he could.

After Naofumi felt they were trustworthy his made a decision.

"Sorry about the door... and most of your skeletons... And you've also given us vital information. So here."

Naofumi dropped all the armor and weapons from the wave on the floor, including the few pieces that were in his [Inventory]. This included all the skeleton armor sets that weren't worn to pieces as well as the huge axes the giant zombies dropped.

Liviccis's eyes were stars, "With this I could... How much?"

"Nothing. They're worthless to me. and honestly not too useful for anyone not fielding a suicide army. So it's perfect for you."

"Thanks... and sorry again about the attacks."

They bonded a bit more as Naofumi and Leon located the thickest veins they could and got to work.

Everyone else relaxed, but Liviccic sent some skeletons to help, though Naofumi insisted on mining it himself due to his bonuses.

Everyone tended to each other's injuries and socialized. They all quietly got a little scared when Teal and Sophia started whispering to one another and giggling. Liviccic was squirming in his seat at the sight.

The family was happy. If everything worked out, here was the next lord of a large area and he didn't look down on any of them. This was the kind of ally they needed.

An hour grew to a few and a few became the whole day. The party opted to sleep in the cave for the night, nothing of value was one the cart and Liviccic set a few skeletons to watch it. They all had a good time while they could. It was hard to believe they were trying to kill each other at the start of the day.

...

The following morning

...

When they woke up the first thing they noticed was Naofumi already up and cooking something good.

The second thing they noticed was Leon.

He had achieve human form that night and was currently fighting Filo over covers. He wasn't use to being cold, but also didn't want to turn back. So they fought for the covers even while sleeping. Naofumi wanted to take a look at him, but he was completely under the covers.

Naofumi looked at them. "It'll get tiring sometimes, but they should get along... at some point."

.

[Author's Notes]

The secret behind the skeletons is revealed.

So the last two major OCs are here. They will not travel with the party, don't worry about them affecting the family dynamic.

That said, they will be strong and useful allies in what is to come.

I went with Sophia for the spider. I'm not quite happy with it, but I'll edit it to something else if I find something else I prefer.

And yes, The Name 'Liviccic' is pronounced 'Liviskis'
