The queen was so stunned, so bewildered, that she just stood there a moment.

"I will rip his fucking balls oooffff!"

A wave of ice shot randomly around the room. The two shadows dodged the unintended attack.

...

The family had advanced in their training quite a bit. Teal was level 40 and only Leon remained. Further, each family member had used their time to grow in other ways.

Monti didn't have the time he liked to master [Chain Lightning] yet, but was well on his way to using his full force effectively. In the time they spent playing with their ball, Monti was starting to dominate the game, but began to hold back a bit to be more fair. Filo felt insulted and quickly made him regret that, showing him that while he was the strongest, it wasn't by as much as he thought.

Teal had finally managed to make an entirely new fruit. It was a nearly perfect sphere that was a swirl of orange and red. She wanted a consistent color at first, but the swirl reminded her of Monti's eyes and so kept it. When growing on the trees, it would be sour if picked in the first half of its ripeness, and sweet in the second half. Naofumi pointed out that it didn't switch between flavors seamlessly and that as people farmed the plant, they would learn the best time to pick the fruit to get their preferred mixtures of sour and sweet.

She also got better at morphing her body and reaching level 40 made her feel strong, but she felt weaker than Monti and Filo. She didn't mind though, her abilities made her useful regardless. She even had time to read her grimoire and already learned two spells [Pit Trap] and [Bamboo Claw].

Leon was also progressing and at a staggering rate. He had mastered all the spells in his beginner grimoire and had even mastered [Hellfire], which he brute forced before. While he could make it work back then, it was also taking five time the mana it should have taken. Using that spell would not tank his Mp reserves as quickly as it did during the wave. Reading his book and practicing magic was not the only form of advancement he partook in.

He was the lowest level, but became the perfect sparring partner for Raphtalia as their stats were close. Raphtalia still had a slight stat disadvantage, but Leon was level 33. He'd pass her up in a level and then outgrow her. Raphtalia no longer hated the idea of her place in the power structure of the family, but she did her best to catch up. Not out of a need to prove herself, but a wanting to protect.

Raphtalia also studied with Leon, as he seemed to be so gifted. She was focusing on learning her intermediate light and shadow spells, needing to master them before she could start her new illusion grimoire. She was on the cusp of learning the most basic of holy spells, but holy felt different enough from basic light spells to make it more difficult. Her intermediate shadow grimoire contained the basics of curses and she honestly didn't want to ever cast something like that, but studied none-the-less. Maybe this knowledge would help her treat curses...

Naofumi gathered a few more shields in this time period. Nothing worth mentioning, mostly different shields based on the minerals that made them. That was until Naofumi asked Raphtalia for some of her blood to possibly unlock another shield to boost her. At the request, the kids offered a little hair and such to see if it did anything.

From Raphtalia's blood he unlocked a second shield.

Now Naofumi had to learn how best to use these.

The family was sitting down for lunch, having just completed another batch of Bioplant monster killings. While enjoying the meal, Naofumi was thinking that he finally had the drop items necessary to try making a stat boost item. He was pulled from those thoughts when he remembered to check in on Liviccic and was pleasantly surprised to hear that Liviccic was able to retake his rightful position. He felt happy for him, but at the same time it was the cause of a few mild arguments.

Liviccic begged Naofumi to stay, asking him to operate out of Briarhaven, swearing to use his power as lord to protect him and his family. Naofumi wasn't having it. He didn't want to put that kind of strain on Liviccic, in a position that was still shaky. That was how he felt things fell apart with Melty. Trying too hard in a given position can have you losing that position.

Liviccic dropped it before it turned into a real argument and asked Naofumi to not remove Sophia or himself from their party until he has crossed into Siltvelt.

By the time the conversation was done, everyone had finished their meals and it was time to hit the road again.

...

The three heroes church

...

The pope, Biscas T. Balmus was exiting the church when he stole a glance at the royal castle, a scowl forming on his face. The church was in a mass scramble. They could not get a single person into the castle, not even a shadow. They could not advance on that front without openly showing hostility and most agreed that bad optics were still something they wanted to avoid, for now.

He entered an armored coach along with several other high ranking members of the church.

"It truly is regrettable that we must abandon the capital right now, but there's nothing to be gained here for now." One of them said, seeing Balmus' look.

"This is all that fool of a king's fault. He not only failed to maintain his authority, but he has allowed the shield devil to become quite strong. It was just as lord Wymarc always confided in me. The king is unfit to lead as much as a trip to the bathroom. I will need to use that, if I'm to have any chance against the shield devil." Balmus thought aloud.

"Indeed. We also must deal with Melty. Not only is she attempting to rally people to the shield devil's side, but we do have certain obligations we must maintain with Malty, for now. We can't cross her yet, she controls the spear hero. We need all three of the heroes on our side."

Another church member spoke, "Those three are no heroes, we've all agreed. Two are so foolish as to attempt to destroy whole villages, the other so useless that some people actually think another country has the bow hero. The spear hero is nearing at the point of being harmful to work with. New rumors of his less-than-platonic love of children have been driving the populace to-"

"Calm yourself, but you are right. These heroes are indeed, unworthy. Currently their power is higher than that of anyone in the church besides myself while wielding that. So we shall retain them until the time is right, just after we locate the shield devil. We will send those three at him and whomever emerges victorious, we kill." Balmus said calmly.

"Indeed. We can keep Malty fervently working with petty lies. She's too foolish to think her own moves are being manipulated. When it's all said and done, we summon new heroes, one's that will not know or care about the Melromarc that came before. If any country challenges us while we have all the cardinal heroes... It won't end well for them." The first one spoke again.

"We will also have a new vassal weapon hero too... The king must be killed at the end of this crusade." Another said.

"Indeed. Whichever one of you performs the best during the upcoming battles will be granted the vassal weapon." Balmus promised.

Those inside were now exchanging looks, they all wished for that power. Balmus was already thinking of his idyllic end, of a victory that was not yet his.

"How long until the advanced party makes contact? I want Melty finished quickly. Her death will spur the queen into making mistakes." Balmus asked the first one.

"By day's end, you holiness." The first one assured.

...

Several days later at a tavern

...

Naofumi and his family were sitting down for a meal for a change. While the kids agreed that they liked their father's cooking more, there were certain dishes that he simply couldn't make with the limited cookware in a cart. They began discussing something important.

"Would you begrudge me if I asked us to head toward that mountain you mentioned? The one with that beast there?" Raphtalia asked lightly.

"It's not too far from here..." Naofumi considered.

Monti perked up. "It'd be six on one. Maybe Leon and I could take it alone, it can't fly like we can. We could safely attack it with no retaliation."

"That's likely true." Teal agreed.

"Aww~, but if Leon gets to fight it, Filo does too." Filo challenged.

"...We can scout it out. We need to know how strong it is before we engage it. After all, it has definitely grown more powerful since then."

Even Filo agreed to check it out before running at it. Raphtalia was happy everyone jumped to aid her in her request. The family moment was interrupted by the most unexpected visitor. She ran up slamming her hands on the table.

"I found you!" Melty yelled.

Everyone was surprised, but Filo got up and hugged Melty all the same. Naofumi noticed that she wasn't alone. She had knight after knight coming into the tavern and he could see more outside...

One of those knights was a beautiful woman that Naofumi hadn't met before. She was about as attractive as Raphtalia, though Naofumi was smart enough to never say aloud. She also had blue eyes and strawberry-blonde hair. The hair was what really stood out about her.

"Greetings, Shield hero. My name is dame Eclair Seaetto. I'm sorry to be so late in meeting you. There are things we must discuss." Eclair said.

"Seaetto? As in lord Seaetto?" Raphtalia asked with a bit of anxiety.

"Hmm? Yes... Are you from my father's lordship?" Eclair politely asked.

"I am. I watched your father go into battle on that day... He fought bravely..." Raphtalia said with a hint of sadness.

"Worry not. There is no shame in death, only in cowardice..., but I must apologies to you then. I failed to protect the village after the wave. I don't have all the details on what happened..."

"Melromarc men came and killed the elderly. They abducted all the children and sold us into slavery. They took the only things we had left... So I'm a bit nervous with all these Melromarc knights standing around us." Raphtalia was not a very subtle person, but she had moments like this.

With a wave from Melty, all the knights began to exit the room, but Eclair. A simple 'not you' also stopped Ake from leaving. The knights simply took posts outside the building.

"Is that better?" Melty asked.

"Yes, thank you." Raphtalia answered.

Raphtalia was able to use that little action to prove something, that despite the host Melty brought with her she was not here to use force and her words were indeed her simply asking.

After that, Melty snapped her fingers and a shadow appeared.

"You summoned me?" The shadow asked

"I wish to keep nothing from Naofumi. Stay seen." Melty said aloud.

Monti immediately recognized the shadow's uniform. "You... I've seen you before. You were at Lerno."

Melty looked to her shadow to speak.

"...That would have to be a different shadow. I was assigned to observe and protect Princess Melty, nothing else."

"A different shadow... So the family was being tracked the whole time?" Teal asked.

Again Melty stared at the shadow to answer, again.

"Y-Yes. The queen heard about the mistreatment of the shield hero and contracted out multiple shadows to keep track of the shield hero and report anything noteworthy." She answered evenly.

"So we were never free? Never doing our own thing? Damn, fooled us." Naofumi said bitterly.

"But that ends. I want you to not be kept in the dark. I want to be open and honest with you. I cannot dismiss the shadows tracking you, because they require mother's word to do so..., But you deserved to know." Melty said.

"So the queen knew of all my mistreatment and all of my achievements to a much higher degree of detail than I previously thought... and she has just let it happen?" Naofumi was getting angry.

"That isn't the case Naofumi. Mother is currently out of the country, trying to prevent war. It's not that your plight is small, but rather that the prospect of war is just that much more daunting..."Melty responded.

"If it pleases the shield hero, I cannot reveal the actions of the queen without her permission, but I can say that she has taken action against some of those that have wronged you and surely more justice is to be dulled out upon her return..." The shadow offered.

The queen was an interesting subject. One he'd explore later, if at all. Now, he had to ask the obvious question.

"That explains how you found us..., but I have to ask, how did you escape the castle and even with a host of knights? And to come to see me? Will this not look bad to that trash?" Naofumi asked.

Melty hated that Naofumi referred to her father in that way, but given her father's behavior, she had to let that go.

"My father is currently in the dungeons. I am acting ruler once again and will not have that usurped. So please return. I will personally march a small army into the church if I have to, I'll get you those class upgrades you want. We could go straight there? Straight to the class upgrades without going to the castle." Melty was offering big from the start.

"...First I'd like to show you something. Is that okay?" Naofumi asked.

"Of course, Naofumi." Melty answered immediately.

Naofumi showed the entire recording between himself and the king. This was the first time Raphtalia or the kids had seen the recording. When it was finished, Naofumi allowed a pause.

"I truly offered him everything and his response was to hint steel at my family's throat."

"I heard, but seeing it myself..." Melty was speechless.

Naofumi didn't want to go back on his word, but things were indeed different. Liviccic was now a lord, Melty had a far firmer grasp on her power, with the king unable to harm his family... And Melty was making the right offers and he was aware that he could get a lot out of Melty if he pushed for it...

The problem was Melromarc as a whole had proven itself a terrible place over and over again. Leadership full of foolishness and racism, a shaky authority system that just saw two children come to power. The whole thing seemed so volatile. He just wanted to face the waves and live with his family. He had a lot to offer and asked for very little. He had made up his mind with the king and Melty was not likely to dissuade him from that decision.

"...I'll be honest with you. I don't want to return. I've been found guilty of crimes I never committed and have seen mostly evil and bigotry from the people... I want to be happy. I want them to be happy." Naofumi, finished pointing to the family.

Neither Melty nor those with her spoke.

"The best I can offer is to help with the waves. I found out about a method of teleportation. Once I have that, I can keep myself registered to the hourglass in the capital and participate in the waves for Melromarc's benefit, then teleport away after we're done... How can you ask for more than that?"

Melty was being put into a similar situation as her father, though not entirely. She was being set up to push further to prove his point. She saw this, but couldn't help herself.

Melty took a step back then lowered her entire self to the floor, a few tears escaping.

"I begging you not to leave. I will offer you anything and everything you ask for... So please. Name it. Name your terms." Melty was outright surrendering to Naofumi.

Naofumi hated this. She was offering anything? And she lowered herself and cried... Naofumi had no way to resist that. The kids all seemed concerned and almost voiced their opinions.

"Dammit..., but wait?"

"This doesn't make sense. You aren't offering me everything because of the waves, because I just offered to continue that... Which means all of this is over what I did as savior? Melty, my deeds aren't worth this."

"It's not for your deeds, just please come back." Was all Melty was able to say while crying.

"Then why?" Naofumi asked.

Melty didn't say a word and stayed lowered to the ground.

"Melty...?" Naofumi leaned down to her side.

After a moment she whispered, "I can't. I'm scared."

Naofumi was taken aback by that. "There's nothing to be scared of. I thought you knew that I'd protect you..."

"If I tell you... you will leave." Melty was crying more now.

Naofumi was tired of this and just picked her off the floor and into his lap. He stroked her hair trying to calm her down. Eventually she stopped crying.

"Better?" Naofumi asked.

"More." Melty demanded.

After a bit more stoking her hair, their moods reset, they continued.

"So why?"

"...If you leave... My mom... my mom will probably kill my dad." Melty eventually admitted.

Naofumi froze.

"Me leaving would kill the king? Now that's just a bonus! ...But that would rob Melty of her father."

Naofumi liked the girl quite a bit... Would he choose his own justice at the expense of destroying a family? Naofumi had an answer the moment he asked that question, but he still struggled.

The children were also thinking it over. They didn't know much about the king, but that recording was enough. At the same time, they really did like Melty a lot and the thought of losing their own father was a devastating idea to consider.

Raphtalia was the one who struggled the most by those words. The king was the reason that she suffered after the wave, the reason that village was gone completely, the reason Rifana... At the same time, Raphtalia knew what it was like to lose a parent. She knew the loss and the directionless grief that came after. She also thought that Melty was a good person despite her royal blood. Still, the idea of taking risks for that man was revolting.

Naofumi didn't know what to say and he wouldn't get a chance to.

[Alert! Danger Imminent!]

Naofumi hesitated for only a moment before he leapt at Eclair, Ake, and the shadow with Melty still in his arms.

[Shield Prison] [Second Shield] [Shield Prison]

He attempted to place a shield around everyone, one around Melty's party and another on his family. It mostly worked, but the shadow could not read Naofumi's intentions and jumped away, taking a fighting stance. In the next moment, they felt a great force, with an accompanying heat and the smell of smoke.

As everyone exited the protective skill they saw the shadow was seriously injured and most of the building destroyed. Naofumi ran to heal her, but stopped when he heard the clashing of swords.

Outside, the knights had been thrown in every direction by the attack, but quickly got to their feet and engaged the enemy. That being the followers of the three heroes church. The knights seemed to be stronger on average and even after losing a few men and many more being injured, they looked to win in a long engagement.

Naofumi thought a moment before he started healing the shadow with [Fast Heal] with an accompanying potion.

"Monti! Leon! Check from the sky! Whoever cast that spell will do it again to win the engagement!" Naofumi did what he could for the shadow and lifted her up and began carrying her.

"This makes no sense!" Melty was completely blindsided by this turn of events.

Naofumi saw this and gave more orders.

"Filo, protect Melty. Teal, create some lines of seeds between buildings, we may need to retreat. Melty, accept my party invite. Raphtalia, with me."

Eclair and Ake weren't given orders, but they stuck to the princess, who was stuck to Naofumi.

The moment they exited what remained of the building, the knights saw Melty was safe and began to rally to her. Breaking the line like that let a few brave zealots make their mad dash to Melty. Eclair took a stance and struck, she let the weight of the enemy allow her sword to run them through, but the weight was too great for her to retrieve her sword fast enough. A knife in the eye, courtesy of Raphtalia, gave her the time she needed to kill the second one.

In that brief moment, he saw Eclair's level increase twice. She was partied with Melty, which meant she was now partied with them. He saw that she was level 1 before that exchange and now she was level 4. Her skill was far beyond what her level suggested, but he'd consider that later.

Naofumi contacted his sons, "Do either of you see anything?"

A brief moment later, Leon responded. "Amongst the soldiers!"

Naofumi looked over and saw them, ten or so mages casting a spell while their soldiers bought them time. Before Naofumi could issue another order, they were done casting the ceremony spell.

[All Drifa Firestorm]

As the spell looked to overtake the knights, Leon swooped down and seemed to try something.

[Anti Firestorm]

The spell became weaker, but was not stopped. The spell hit Leon, who shielded everyone and was sent over two buildings from the hit, landing violently.

Naofumi was concerned, but kept his feelings in check. He saw that it took more than half of Leon's Hp, but he would live. The idea that he took that much damage from a fire spell that was partially countered was eye opening.

Monti slammed into the mages from above and took them to the ground with a pulse of [Blightning].

With the knights rallied and the church's mages taken care of, the battle was already decided, even if it would take time to see it through. Seeing this, Eclair spoke to Naofumi.

"Shield hero, we should retreat to a safe distance. We need to secure Melty."

"Understood." Naofumi answered.

Naofumi saw a few other knights were in Melty's party. "Listen! Those of you who are partied with Melty, she will contact you after she is safe!"

The knights could do little more than nod their heads and continue their engagement.

Monti made sure to inject paralysis poison in each of the nine mages. One was apparently very low on health, as injecting him with venom killed him. Monti hesitated, but continued. Once done, he flew towards where Leon was. The whole party made it to Leon and after getting him to transform back, Raphtalia picked him up and they kept moving.

They all ran to the cart and quickly got everything ready to leave. Teal climbed to the top of the cart and watched the battle. She saw that the church was losing men, but were so determined that they kept pushing the knights back despite the losses.

As soon as she was sure of their location, Teal used [Living Wall] on the seeds she planted, splitting the church's group in half with one half stuck between wooden walls and the Melromarc knights. Said knights proceeded to act on this chain of events and quickly overwhelmed the group. By the time they finished the last of that half, the wall died.

They didn't get to see what happened next, as they had Filo shoot off at a great speed. The family, Melty, Eclair, Ake, and the shadow left the scene.

...

Briarhaven

...

Liviccic and Sophia weren't settling into their roles very well, but it was to be expected. It was made worse with Sophia not knowing what her role even was and Liviccic slow to give her an answer. The two had brought the kraken into the city and Liviccic used [Revive] on it. Not to fight, but as a form of resource. The kraken regenerated its heads and so Liviccic ordered the systematic harvesting of the beast every time it regenerated. He planned to use the hide to make new standard issue armor for the knights. He'd also see what use he could have for the heads.

He also had strong monster bodies brought in and used the Soul Eater to possess the bodies and fight the knights over and over again. The knights were able to get plenty of EXP and it was without needing to leave the castle walls. This method would speed up their leveling a bit and the work schedules improved quite a bit from guaranteed battles.

Surely new armor and a renewable source of such things made them look upon him favorably?

Liviccic even refrained from using [Revive] on the knights he killed, hoping to not anger the troops. (Though he kept Boris' armor for something special he was working on). He understood he stood on less than solid ground.

He was exiting his home when he received a call from Naofumi.

"Liviccic, it's Naofumi! We have an emergency!" Naofumi sounded quite serious.

Liviccic was scared as always from the sudden call from out of thin air, but he recovered.

"What is it?"

"A lot happened. Melty imprisoned her father and came to find me, these holy fucks attacked. We're fleeing now." Naofumi was somewhat rambling as he spoke.

"The enemy reveals themselves so easily? No. They can't know that Naofumi can communicate over long distances or that I'm his ally..." Liviccic thought.

"Give me the details, all of them." Liviccic asked.

He added Eclair to his main party as well, so she could help with the details.

...

After giving Liviccic all the details

...

"I see... Then that settles it." Liviccic said in a serious tone

"I don't know what you can do with this information, but I need to get Melty to safety. Her safety is paramount." Eclair said.

"Then make your way to Briarhaven. I'll gladly meet them in battle." Liviccic sounded oddly eager.

"Liviccic?" Raphtalia picked up on his tone.

"Sorry, it's just that three nobles were killed after a meeting with the church, two very loyal to the crown, the third my father, a man of his word. Now the church attacks Princess Melty?" Liviccic let the words hang there.

"They killed your father..." Melty finished.

"And I will show them a son's wrath! Get here and I will take care of everything!" Liviccic was promising big.

...

Marching on the road.

...

Several of the greater lords were now mobilized, their combined army on the move. Currently four of them had met up on the roads and now traveled together. Lord Aldreick Wymarc of Windingbrook (Lv: 53), Lord Averill Veit of the western front (Lv: 63), Lady Olivia Grimwald of Evergreen (Lv: 55), and Lord Gunvald Langiva of high peek (Lv: 59).

Lord Averill Veit was an overweight, hairy, older man of red hair and green eyes. He was extremely big, at 6'7" tall. Due to this, he sat in a wagon drawn by two tyrella and not riding a mount himself. His armor was decorated with the imagery of boars, with tusks adorning it. Oddly, he had no weapon to speak of.

"Oi! Al! It's good to know you decided to join us. I'd have hated crushing you." Lord Averill yelled between sips of alcohol.

Lord Gunvald Langiva was a slender, older man who was of average height. He had slicked back faded black hair and yellow eyes. He wore leather armor with metal in needed places, like his elbows and forearms. He also wore a more formal and noble coat overtop his armor, but let it rest on his shoulders and would not wear it properly. He rode a tyrella and had a large glaive at his side.

"You, Av? Crush Al? Things aren't as they were back then. Your love of food and wine have left you quite out of shape." Lord Langiva chided.

Lady Olivia Grimwald was an older woman with purple hair and copper colored eyes. She was eerily pale and wore no armor at all, instead wearing robes that seemed a mixture between a noblemen's garb and a wizard's robe. She had knives and vials strung about her. She also rode a tyrella.

"Indeed, you are no longer the man that lived for battle. That said, I do believe you remain the highest level amongst us, correct?" Lady Grimwald asked.

Lord Aldreick spoke, "Indeed, while I seem to remain the lowest... Still, if we came to blows-"

"Yeah, yeah. You'd stab me full of holes with that thin little sword of yours." Lord Averill dismissed.

"It's a rapier. How is it a battle brain like you can't remember the names of weapons?" Lady Grimwald asked in a condescending tone.

"Hmm? Because I don't need a weapon." Lord Averill boasted.

"The shield devil's defense will be too much for your hands. My glaive though? I'll run him through in one go." Lord Langiva claimed.

"Quiet the boasting until after we meet up with Wagner, Rabier and Veramir." Lady Grimwald told them.

"What of Einclad's and Osmond's kids? Are we not to meet up with them too?" Aldreick asked.

"I mean sure, but they are battle virgins, neither have killed a man before. They also only have levels around 25. Their fathers handle them too softly." Lord Averill complained.

"True, but they can lead from behind for the next few battles. We'll allow them some glory after they've class upgraded. Don't want them dropping as quickly as their fathers, hehe." Lady Grimwald said with a snicker.

"I will secure Einclad's daughter and Osmond's son's safety, then stab all you monsters in the back." Aldreick thought to himself.

[Author's Notes]

Good job to those who guessed Eclair

Melty was saying all the right things, but the three heroes church had to be dicks

Leon got hurt, but saved a whole lot of knights doing so. Will he finally receive worship?

Monti killed again, but it was an accident.

They are now heading to Briarhaven

Also once again, fuck making names.
