"Queen Fitoria... I see we have much to discuss. Please, all of you follow. All of you." The queen began to leave the throne room, opting for a more appropriate meeting setting.
There was more to discuss. Their need to travel, Lurolona, the curse series, and much more.
...
The queen led everyone into a large room with a huge table and dozens of chairs. She motioned for everyone to take a seat. Most found their seat quickly, but Liviccic stopped Naofumi a moment.
"How does this stupid 'weapon copy' work?" Liviccic asked, struggling to have his new vassal staff copy the one Naofumi 'gifted' him with.
"Hold one in each hand and just think about it, a menu will pop up asking you to confirm." Naofumi instructed.
"..." Liviccic concentrated a moment, then the staff changed to match his original one.
"Hmm... Thanks." Liviccic was relieved.
"No problem. I'd absorb the material too, more unlocks an-oh, and take these, been holding on to them for you." Naofumi said, handing Liviccic the two cursed whips that were taken from Idol.
Liviccic absorbed the staff and whips, unlocking a few staves, but oddly the black ball that was housed in the staff was stored away, not absorbed. Liviccic would need time and Naofumi's mentorship to get the hang of it.
After the brief exchange, they all sat down, like everyone else. The queen began.
"This meeting is simply to exchange certain information and gives me a chance to speak to you all about some future plans that may include yourselves. I was hoping to speak of Melromarc's future here and begin forming my recovery plan. For that, I need to wait for Eadwig Wagner. I made him leave with the rest and will be here shortly. Before that, however... Naofumi, tell me about that force that was around the bow hero. You sensed it before we could see it and you seem to recognize it." Mirellia started the meeting.
"...I know a disappointingly small amount of detail. I had something similar happen to me several times, but just like Itsuki, someone else was able to drag me out of it... It seems to be one of the most powerful weapon forms we can take and there doesn't seem to be a level requirement. Despite the power and ease of access though... it's better to never use it. It drives me into a rage, one I can't escape alone... According to Fitoria, the more you use it, the more it wears down your willpower against it. Eventually, you're stuck that way... So the only way to avoid that fate is to not rely on that power at all." Naofumi told the group.
"...In the near future, the bow hero will need to be told this... I asked for all of you to return to the castle in a week for a reason. It'd be the opportune time to warn them all." The queen told him.
Naofumi nodded. He didn't like them, but the only thing worse than three hero-powered idiots running around was three hero-powered idiots running around with cursed weapons.
Just as they ended the brief exchange, Eadwig came in. He bowed to the queen and took a seat. Naofumi and the party had never met him, but the last name Wagner made Naofumi assume the worst of him.
"Now that everyone is here, I'd like to get straight to the point. I am publicly down 10 of my 11 greater lords... Lord Blackcrown has yet to swear fealty publicly and while I technically have lord Wymarc... I really don't. He is currently taking Veramir's former slaves to Lurolona for me, but I suspect he'll do little else... Lord Blackcrown, I approve your request." The queen said out of nowhere.
Liviccic smiled. "Then name the time and place and I'll swear fealty." Liviccic offered.
"Here and now then. I don't need the public to see it. Blackcrown's are good to their word." The queen answered swiftly.
Liviccic was put off a bit, but stood and walked over to her and knelt.
"I do hereby swear loyalty to you, to your family and to the people of Melromarc. I will always be willing to protect and serve and will do all that is asked of me..." Liviccic said seriously.
"Thank you." The queen motioned for him to take his seat. "After consideration, Eadwig, I believe you can replace your father, if only because you killed him." Mirellia told him.
That was the first that Naofumi or the family heard of that. Naofumi thought he might be a potential ally, but the kids all thought poorly of him. The idea of killing family seemed rotten.
"So I am at three so quickly..." The queen wore a smile. "I'd like to name a few more people here to the position of greater lord." The queen admitted.
Naofumi faltered and started to gain a smile. "Things are going so well."
The queen saw his face and ruined his mood.
"Ah, yes. 'Stacking the deck'. I believe that was the phrase you used." The queen revealed with a smirk.
Naofumi froze solid.
"You blatantly scheme aloud, in the open, roughly 100 feet from me, right after we have a conversation about me suddenly having more spies available..." The queen pointed out.
Naofumi went from shame to daydreaming. It really was so incredibly stupid that he just sat in it for a second and felt it...
"So this is dumbness? This is how Motoyasu lives his life... It's actually kind of nice..." Naofumi thought.
"I want to trust you shie-no, Naofumi... I believe that you've gathered worthwhile allies. They've fought for you and the future of this country and I hear that you plan to allow them to receive the special class upgrade you have access to... I am not doing this because of your manipulation, but in spite of it. Because they proved to be worth consideration, putting their lives on the line for you and the people and soon they will have the power to back it up." The queen explained her thought process.
"Um...yeah, sorry." Naofumi managed.
"So I'd like to ask Fitts, Godiva, and Mia to consider also taking such a position." The queen said quickly.
Mia was dumbstruck. "B-But I'm a demi-human and weak. The people will-"
"You being a demi-human is a bonus, not a penalty. If I want to raise demi-humans up, then positions of power have to be made available to them. As for power, I was told that the shield hero already plans to see to that and even still, it isn't personal power I am interested in, in your case. I was told you created a weapon in the field that killed lord Averill... That is an incredible feat." The queen complimented.
"So you want me to arm Melromarc with better weapons and armor?" Mia asked with suspicion.
"Yes." The queen said openly with no shame. "I would name you the new lady of Evergreen. You could repurpose all of Grimwald's labs for your own needs. Lord Blackcrown has already converted the 40 strongest knights there to be loyal to me above all else. They would keep you safe from any who disagree with your new position." The queen purposed.
It was an incredible opportunity to create truly amazing things. The supplies and facilities to make them and even all the replica notes to work from. This could be her best chance to do as Sigrid told her to and make things that matter.
"...Under the condition that my family is freed and returned to me. They are still slaves in the western front." Mia answered. She felt nervous demanding anything of Mirellia, but this was likely her only chance to free whatever remained of her family without paying a small fortune.
"I was unaware you had family, consider it done. After all, I'd like to name Godiva here to replace Averill on the western front. I doubt you'd wish to keep them." The queen announced.
Godiva didn't speak immediately. She knew that if she received the class upgrade from Naofumi that her power would be a match for Averill's own. She knew that the western front was less orderly than most places and that regardless of the queen's command, you'd only remain the leader there if you were too strong to kill...
"I'll do it, but only after I've gained strength." Godiva answered.
Ultimately, she thought that she might be able to beat that place into order, protect the people and have the guard do as they should... as Kurtis would.
"And that leaves you, Sir Fitts... I'd like you to consider taking up the position of greater lord of Crowood. You've shown incredible personal strength with everything that has happened and I feel that I absolutely must repay you." The queen told him.
"...I have some education, but do you not think that we will not all require more?" Fitts asked doubtfully.
"Is that a 'yes'?" The queen pushed for an answer first.
"...Yes..." Fitts decided.
"I am not naming any of you as greater lords yet. In a week, after the meeting of the heroes, we will discuss when and how you will all be placed in those positions. On that day, we will also be having a feast to celebrate our victory over the three heroes church. So, I'd like all of you to attend... Except you, Eadwig, please return to Opaltown and prepare things as we've discussed. You can wait to be named your father's replacement after things are dealt with." The queen announced.
"Yes, my queen." Eadwig answered with a bow.
"In the coming months I'd like us all to focus on the waves, and in the coming years I'd like us to focus on correcting demi-human treatment. The situation is nearly reversed from before. My new leadership will not disagree with me on this subject... Though, we will take it slow as I work with Siltvelt..." The queen told the room.
"We still have two things to discuss." Naofumi burst her bubble.
"Do we?" The queen asked.
"Us staying and us leaving, which actually are separate issues." Naofumi told her.
"You are still unsatisfied? I will be naming a number of your allies to some of the highest positions possible, I've shown a willingness to defend your family, I allowed you to issue Malty and Aultcray's punishments, made sure to clear your name, and even potentially ruined the relationships I could have had with the other three heroes... What more do you want?" The queen questioned while trying to not be angry.
"We have to travel even if we stay. Fitoria made it clear, I need to travel to the hourglasses of the other countries and register to them. I can set save points and return whenever, but I have to leave. Which is why it sucks that you spilled the beans about my alias. Now I can't really hide my identity when we travel..." Naofumi told her, a sour look on his face.
"I see..., but you still won't agree to stay? Still playing at it?" The queen was not sorry at all for ruining the alias.
"We've thought about it and we have an answer... We want to have a place we can live without all this bullshit. We found out more about the surrounding countries and a lot of what you said seems to be true, but not all of it... and Shieldfreeden just seemed to slip your mind at the time, I guess..." Naofumi started.
"..." The queen didn't interrupt.
"...But if we can't find a place for us, we'll make one." Naofumi echoed Monti's words. "Give us that and we stay." Naofumi finished.
"I'm handing lordships out at the moment, but... If I asked you to take Lurolona and not ask for a more plentiful location, would you consider it?" The queen asked.
Raphtalia gripped Naofumi's hand tighter. Naofumi knew his answer.
"I would, but I want to know why you want me in charge of Lurolona." Naofumi felt played, even after playing hard ball with her.
"I understand enough about you at this point, Naofumi. You will not abuse the people under you. You also have the status as shield hero, which makes demi-humans want to trust you. Between Veramir's victims and the slaves we will be tracking down, you might be the person they will trust. They will not trust whatever Melromarcian blue blood I could send and they certainly won't trust me..., but they are still my people and I want to know someone is protecting them." The queen answered, her face betrayed no ill intent.
"...You were going to give me Lurolona, regardless..." Naofumi realized.
"Maybe, maybe not. So you will stay?" The queen deflected, then asked.
"We'll stay." Naofumi offered his hand.
They shook hands and the deal was struck. In the end, Mirellia had done quite a bit for Naofumi and the family, but Naofumi wondered how much more he could have gotten had he stayed a hard-ass. Raphtalia nudged Naofumi to get him to stop thinking to himself.
Everyone began to clear the room, everyone except Naofumi, Raphtalia, and Mirellia. Raphtalia asked the kids to wait out in the hallway. Once alone, Naofumi asked out of the blue.
"...By the way, I'm going to need Melty." Naofumi told the queen.
"W-Whatever for?" The queen asked.
Naofumi went to explain. "Because I don't know shit ab-"
"Language." Raphtalia corrected him.
"... I don't know anything about running a town. I'll need her to at least guide me a bit for a while... "Naofumi corrected his cursing.
"Oh..." The queen answered in disappointment. "It'd be a good learning experience for her, plus Melty helping the town will make the people like her, even if they hate the crown."
"That and she needs more chances to be a kid. You can just see her seriousness peel away when she's playing with the kids." Raphtalia added.
That did put a smile of Mirellia's face.
"I also wanted to ask why you really didn't want to give Liviccic more power. He is young, but he is a good person and very level-headed. He also has a very 'Melromarc first' attitude and is your subordinate. I don't see what's so wrong with him." Naofumi asked.
"It's more of a personal thing." The queen deflected.
"Care to elaborate?" Naofumi asked.
"Well... I was hoping to get you to fall for Melty, but from Raphtalia here, that doesn't look like it's going to happen. Now you've granted the staff to Liviccic, he is also already in a relationship that's frankly going to cause no end of troubles for me. If you granted it to someone that I could set up with Melty though..." The queen schemed openly.
"Okay, first off, she's fucking 10 years old. Second, why are you obsessed with matching Melty to a hero?" Naofumi became defensive.
Raphtalia let that curse slide, if she corrected him every time, they'd both get worn out.
"Not to fight you with words, but how old is miss Raphtalia here? As for Melty, she deserves as great a match as I can secure for her." The queen answered quickly.
"Okay, I surrender the first point." Naofumi wanted the subject changed, now.
"Melty can secure someone herself, she is quite charming. Monti and Leon seem to think so." Raphtalia revealed.
"Hmm... I don't know, Monti and Leon probably just enjoy her company as a fellow kid. Boys don't mature as fast as girls. I kind of doubt that Leon has interest in girls yet." Naofumi thought aloud.
"Do I take that to mean that you believe Monti does?" Raphtalia asked with a frightening amount of excitement.
"Maybe... You saw the way he was with Mia." Naofumi refused to give a solid answer.
The little aside really helped the queen see they can operate like parents at times. There was truth to what she was told.
...
The rest of the day
...
After the meetings and other stuff was over and done with, their large group went to the hourglass at the now abandoned church. Filo helped as Silvius, Fitts and Chloe all received their class upgrades. Naofumi forgot to ask them much about the details as they were all rather busy. Fitts and Chloe returned to the castle to see what they could do to help around there, while Silvius went ahead of Liviccic to prepare them to leave. Liviccic stayed a bit longer to get some more instruction.
"So these spell levels don't even work the way I thought. You gain three points per level and you put them into whatever spell you'd like, but I seem to not be able to place these points past level 5... Maybe because I'm level 51? So I can go to 10 at level 100? Anyways, I have other issues now... I have Mp now. As the staff hero, I'm supposed to be able to learn all magic, but even if I use the spell levels to learn new spells, I have to have a base. So now I have to read every damned grimoire there is..." Liviccic explained.
"Let me add to that headache." Naofumi said as he removed a few choice materials from his shield.
He gave Liviccic a piece of the Cerberus, hydra, Tyrant Rex, and that stone wave boss. Each unlocking forms that needed to be made a priority due to their abilities and power.
"Man... my normal means of fighting may need to take a back seat to this. My skeletons aren't going to get much use with this thing around." Liviccic thought aloud.
"Yeah, but your undead aren't people, you can just store them like items, then pull them out whenever you want." Naofumi offered.
"True... Let's see how well I get the hang of this once Sophia gets her hands on me." Liviccic joked.
"If you don't mind my asking, why wasn't she here?" Raphtalia asked.
"...Optics... Me being with Sophia is a problem. We can't actually have a kid and it is expected that I have kids... Look, it's a whole other mess, but basically I can't be with Sophia in the capital right now, hopefully later on. It's not perfect, but we'll deal with it." Liviccic answered, not happy himself.
"...As a hero, you don't have to put up with that shi-crap." Naofumi said, correcting himself before Raphtalia could.
Raphtalia gave him a nod of approval. She didn't mind his cursing herself, but didn't want the kids taking after him in that regard.
"Like I said before... I'm too strong... I can't go around demanding to always have my way. Even if I feel justified, that's a slippery slope. It could lead me to acting like a tyrant... I'd rather be personally unhappy in the short-term than place my unhappiness onto others." Liviccic finished.
Their talk ended soon after. He waved to them as he left, doing his best to catch up to Silvius. Godiva went out to fight monsters again, she really wanted those last two levels to class upgrade. Mia ended up going to the castle for her own ideas after Godiva left. That meant the family could finish making their cart.
Naofumi already figured out their traveling plans, in the short-term. He'd keep the save point at Fitoria's and the border, while they'd try to make it to Lurolona, using the last save point either there or on the way to make it back here to meet up with Ren in a few days...
Long term, the save points in Fitoria's realm and Lurolona stay the same. The one at the border will be updated as they travel, with Siltvelt being the next major country to enter. If he couldn't hide being the shield hero, then that'd be the best choice.
Right now, though? It was shield granting time.
"Aright, let's gather up real quick... Filo, Teal, Leon, I have decided which shield to give each of you. So let's do this, okay?"
The three of them cheered loudly in excitement. While Teal knew what she was getting, Filo and Leon had no idea. This left them telling the other about how cool and awesome their abilities were going to be. Raphtalia and Monti were off to the side watching the little display. Neither felt bad about not receiving a shield yet. Raphtalia was secure in her position in the family and Monti had the holy weapon replica.
"Okay, Teal first."
"Wha~? But I'm older." Filo complained.
"Teal needs all the time she can to get used to this, so wait." Naofumi told Filo.
Filo did a little huff that was meant to show her displeasure, but it just made Naofumi smile. He rubbed Filo's head to remove the sour look form her face.
"Alright, here goes..."

Naofumi saw that the effects were placed in Teal, but there was no physical shield. Teal felt the odd ability instantly. It was the oddest thing she had ever felt in her short life. She could move and alter herself in an entirely new way. It gave a new dimension to everything. It was almost sensory overload. It took her several moments to escape the daze she was in.
"Whoa... This is going to take a while... but I think... Yeah, this is really cool." Teal said eventually.
Naofumi was just glad it worked and Teal was fine. He lost his ability to alter plants, but it was no loss to him. He used it to make Teal, for that, it had his thanks. Now he no longer needed it.
Naofumi went to upgrade the next, only to find Filo and Leon fighting over who gets to have the power-up next. They were really going at it. Naofumi had hoped that [Love] would keep them from fighting since neither could win, but it did the opposite. They fought more brutally because they didn't have to worry about hurting themselves or each other. Near the end, Filo and Leon had bitten each other's nose with their heads sideways and pulled as hard as they could.
"Enough both of you!" Naofumi raised his voice. They both stopped.
"You two can beat each other up all day, but since neither of you can win, we get nowhere. Just rock-paper-scissors to see who goes first." Naofumi told the pair.
They looked at their father with matching dumb looks with red noses. Naofumi quickly realized why.
"Oh, right. I never taught you kids that, huh. Okay, listen up. It's a game that-" Naofumi explained the rules of the game and the kids liked the idea a lot.
As soon as they tried, Filo won, paper beats rock. Leon fell to the ground in a dramatic fashion. He had lost to Filo, his rival. The humiliation. Naofumi ignored his drama queen of a son for a moment as he granted Filo her shield.

Naofumi decided to give filo the [Filolial Royal Shield]. Not because of the name though. He did it because of the ability it had.
[Ability: Motion Magic] Gain stats the faster you're moving, this is always in flux.
Now Filo would have higher stats the faster she moved. For Filo, no ability could be greater.
Filo went to show off her powers, but her father tapped her on her other shoulder and snuck around her to Leon to grant him his shield while she looked behind her. Avoiding any hurt feelings the two might have.

Now Leon could counter magic better and even attempt to counter magic automatically, if it would hit him.
Much to Naofumi's annoyance, the pair then began an argument over whose new abilities were better. Some problems can't be solved.
After the shield granting was over, they worked on their home. By the end of the day, the cart was basically done. They bought cloth and sheets for now, but the kids wanted it to be way more colorful. He was able to use [Determine] to place emeralds behind each of the wheels with [Speed Up] on them. They were worried that the weight might be too much for Filo, but she was becoming quite bratty near the end, wanting to pull it. When she finally did, she didn't complain, so maybe it wasn't an issue.
The sun was already going down by the time they finished the cart and bought traveling supplies, but no one wanted to stay in an inn any longer. They took to the roads heading towards Lurolona, everyone in as good of a mood as they've had in weeks. That night, they slept in their new home for the first time and they were all more than satisfied. All of them went to sleep very easily.
...
Undetermined time, undetermined place
...
Three figures were walking down a road when they caught sight of a small fire. Someone had already settled down for the night and had food cooking. Two of the figures turned to the third, as if begging. They were tired from walking all day.
"Fine, damned weak humans. We'll stop for the night." The third figure said.
They approached the fire, only for the adventures that made it to give them a mean look.
"Buzz off, we have no food or fire for you." One warned.
Instead of responding, the leader of the three turned to one of them.
"Kalbur, anything worth salvaging?" He asked, ignoring the four adventures.
The man asking was the man that shared Monti's eyes. He now commanded Kalbur and one other, but for what purpose?
Kalbur looked at the adventures a moment. "No, master. None seem to be of noble birth, their armo-"
"I can access objects myself, including people and their levels. If they have no useful social connections, then they don't matter." The beast told Kalbur.
The adventurers were not dumb to the meaning of their words and grabbed their weapons to stand and fight.
"Bold of you. There are four of us and three of you!" The tallest man yelled.
Kalbur and the other man took a step back, knowing that they said the wrong thing to their master.
"Outnumbered? Me?" The beast seemed offended.
Centipedes began to escape his clothes and wrap around him, spilling onto the ground, the amount seemed impossible to fit in his outfit. All of them were at least half a foot thick.
"There is no outnumbering The Parade. You see a lone joint, a single mandible and you think that's it? I quite literally outnumber this country and possibly this whole world! Don't condescend to me!" The voice came from all the centipedes and the human body.
In a flash, three of the four were dead, centipedes shot through the armor of the adventures like a spear through water. The centipedes lost the stiffness they had in piercing their targets and wrapped around their victims. They began to eat their prey before they hit the ground. Meanwhile, the fourth adventure was unhurt and collapsed in fear. The girl shaking in complete denial of what happened.
"You... You had the good fortune of having passable stats for you level and not pissing me off. So you get to live." The beast told her.
"W-Who or what... are you?" The girl managed to ask.
"Merodach, The Parade. You are now my slave, congratulations." He said with a genuine smile.
"Wha...?" She was trying to calm herself down and think things through.
"So we're taking her with us, boss?" The other man asked. As he did, he stepped into the light revealing it to be Mald, Itsuki's former party member. Merodach had 'gained' Mald as an ally due to his stats and level, not in a manner unlike this girl's 'recruitment'.
"No. We will keep traveling toward this other wave boss. While she and I make for that one country I was interested in... Zeltoble." Merodach told Mald.
"Wait, what? How are you going with us and her to two different places?" Mald asked, confused.
"Like this." Merodach said.
He split off into two selves. Both looked exactly the same, even their clothes duplicated. Mald and this new girl were floored, Kalbur had seen it once before.
"She is level 21, so a level 30 limb should be fine." Merodach reasoned.
"Is that why we're constantly receiving EXP? I thought that was just a thing you were doing?" Mald asked, trying to catch up on the facts.
"Other versions of myself are farming right now. So, I am causing it... Get up." Merodach answered Mald then ordered the girl.
Her mind still hadn't caught up to the situation, but she still stood out of fear.
"Hurry and eat, then sleep. Tomorrow morning we are leaving. Attempt to escape and I'll eat you." He didn't wait for her reply.
His centipedes returned to him after eating the three adventures and upon merging with him, he was full. Mald ate two of the prepared meals, while Kalbur ate one. The girl eventually got her head on straight and sat to eat. Not even her allies' bones remained, just their equipment. She tried to eat while shaking in fear. Kalbur saw this and spoke.
"Stop worrying about being killed. He grants us power in exchange for completing a single task. When the time comes, do what he says and you're free. Leaving with extra power for your trouble." Kalbur said.
"...Have you seen him releasing anyone afterwards? ...How do you know he will?" She asked, not believing him.
"I haven't and I can't know for sure..., but... It's not like we could escape anyways." Kalbur told her straight.
"I thought I saw real power when the shield devil unleashed that toy of his..., but I've glimpsed real power now. I may have abandoned Balmus in his time of need, but I still respected the man. When we find you, shield devil, you're dead." Kalbur thought to himself.
She saw that her fate was sealed, she just didn't know what that fate was yet. That night, she mourned her friends quietly, not daring to wake the beast. She did what she could to mentally and emotionally prepare herself for the days ahead. Worrying herself to sleep.
...
Over the next two days
...
Naofumi and the family didn't think they traveled all that fast. They still stopped twice a day for meals, killing some Bioplant monsters while they were at it, as well as monsters on the road. Naofumi thought nothing was being done differently, but the results were speaking for themselves. They were going to make it to Lurolona much earlier than expected. At first, Naofumi didn't understand why, but it became clear as he paid closer attention.
Filo was traveling much faster than before, but with a larger, firmer cart, Raphtalia wasn't being impacted much by her motion sickness. When they traveled through other countries, they'd need to slow it down, otherwise they'd gather more attention than they had already. He'd allow Filo to continue at this pace for now. Reaching Lurolona before needing to return wasn't necessary, but Raphtalia really wanted to, so it was going to be the goal.
Nearing the end of the second full day of travel, they were a little disappointed to see that they hadn't reached Lurolona, but they made progress. They went to sleep that night a little early. Naofumi saved the place they rested at and prepared for the next day. They had people to meet in the capital tomorrow... First Ren, then Wyndia. Leon was the most excited for sure, but everyone wanted to meet her for different reasons.
.
[Author's Notes]
The queen plans to hand out plenty of authority to Naofumi's allies. Things are looking up for them.
Naofumi gains lordship of Lurolona sooner than canon. Naofumi will 'stay' in Melromarc as long as he and his family can be left alone in Lurolona.
Next time, Naofumi meets up with Ren. Naofumi has a plan to show Ren that this world is real, but will he listen?
What do you think of the gifted shield effects? who's is you favorite?
I wonder what shield effects in the future Naofumi may gain to gift to Raphtalia and Monti.
This other intelligent wave monster seems to have power and problematic abilities, worse, he's searching for Monti while gathering a 'party' of his own. Former archbishop Kalbur and Mald (aka annoying armor asshole) are his first two notable 'allies'.
Also, I see that while some of you say Monti or Teal is your favorite... No one said Leon. So I'll put more effort into him.
