Chapter 11: Well Now I'm a Creep in Camp
After my check-in with the Kane's, my reputation in Camp plummeted even further. I became this one kid who got special treatment because of who my brother is and the fact that I wasn't like everyone else; to that one kid that has a walking target on her back because she has something related to one of the most infamous villains they know.
I guess this is how Raven from Teen Titans feels most of the time.
Percy told Chiron to not allow me to join any camp events until I'm cured. Percy and I argued a lot more than usual, mostly because I hated that he's preventing me from getting along with the other campers. It was bad enough that they see me as the sister of the great Percy Jackson, Savior of Olympus; but now they see me as some creep who can kill them in their sleep.
And don't get me started on the Athena kids. One time I went over there to meet up with Sam, since she's now a child of Athena, in the mess hall and they all literally pointed their weapons at me, excluding Sam. They were about ready to attack if it weren't for Annabeth intervening.
"That's enough, everyone!" She ordered.
"But Annabeth, she was claimed by Arachne herself! Our mother's sworn enemy! We all saw it!"
"That may be true, but she's my husband's sister and therefore my sister! And she still treats you all normally. She's a mortal child and still sees us as equals, regardless of who or what we are."
The children calmed down a bit but kept glaring at me. I left to talk to Annabeth in private, Sam followed me afterwards.
"Thanks, sis," I said to Annabeth. "I really appreciate that."
"You're a good kid, Estelle. You wouldn't hurt any of us."
"I just wish they could see that. I want to be like you guys, fighting monsters, saving the world."
Annabeth sighs, "Estelle, you have to understand. Curses are not good things. Especially from Arachne. I should know…"
I can tell from her eyes that she was remembering something traumatizing for her. Percy did tell me how she had to confront Arachne alone and return the Mark of Athena back to Camp. That meant that she had to confront her biggest fear without Percy and that devastated both of them. What's worse is that afterwards, they both fell into Tartarus and had to survive long enough to escape.
And they were only 16-years old at the time.
"And what about you?" I asked with concern.
"To be honest… every instinct in my body is actively preparing to fight. In the back of my head, I'm already planning several plans should the Curse… worsened. And… I hate it. I hate that I'm like this toward you. You of all people. Percy and his mom accepted me into their family and you love me as a sister. And what am I doing right now? Strategizing a way to stop you," Annabeth answered, frustrated that instinct is kicking in and forcing her to plan against me.
I hugged her sincerely, "It's okay, Annabeth. I understand, this curse is just bringing back some bad memories. That's all."
Annabeth sighs, "Yeah… it is, Estelle. I know you want to use this curse for good. But trust me, it'll cause nothing but pain and suffering."
I snickered, "Isn't that the life of Spider-Man."
She scoffed but smiled at my joke.
"I'm surprised you're not affected by this, Samantha," Annabeth mentioned.
Sam shrugged, "I'm not afraid of spiders. They're actually my favorite."
"And you're a Daughter of Athena," I added. "You're probably the weirdest one yet."
"I prefer the term, unique."
I rolled my eyes as Annabeth spoke.
"Well for now, Estelle, head back to the big house and watch over Luke and Selina. The other campers are needed a bit."
"Can't I join?"
"No, Estelle. We can't risk any chance of the curse giving any more surprises."
I sigh and nod.
"Don't worry, Stella," Sam replied. "We can hang out later. Best not to upset your brother any more than usual."
"Fine, but don't cause any trouble while I'm gone."
Sam scoffed, "Isn't that your specialty?"
I laughed sarcastically. But it's not untrue.
After I said goodbye to the two, I walked toward the big house. Unfortunately, I'm still the center of gossip in Camp. Many campers would either whisper towards each other as I passed by; glare at me or just ignore me.
So this is what feels like to be the biggest loser in school.
Thank goodness Percy turned out well as an adult. I just wish he wasn't so overprotective.
"Hey," said a voice from behind me. I turned around and saw Becky calling to me with Tristan.
"We never got the chance to introduce ourselves from Capture the Flag."
I looked at them with confused looks, "Aren't you guys creeped out by my curse and my sudden reveal?"
"Oh we were," Tristan answered, "But, despite that, you had our backs during the game. So whatever the others may say, you're one of us."
At least I know I'm not a total loser in camp.
"I'm Tristan, Son of Nemesis."
"And I'm Rebecca, Unclaimed at the moment. But Tristan here believes that I may be considered either Apollo or Aphrodite. Hopefully Apollo."
"Why's that?" I asked. "Being a child of Aphrodite doesn't sound too bad. Aren't they supposed to be one of the most beautiful people?"
"Your brother never really tells you much about his past, huh?" Becky said. "They… been having it rough for a while when it comes to love. They got beauty and fame, sure. But when it comes to love… true love… well…"
"Let me guess," I interrupted, "It goes all Shakespeare on them, right?"
"Yep, someone dies in the end."
Seriously, who's idea was it that it's romantic for people to die for their soulmates.
"Well then, let's hope you're a child of Apollo."
Becky laughed and agreed. The three of us talked as I headed my way to the big house and watched over my nephew and niece. Since Becky and Tristan don't have anything planned for today, they joined me on babysitting duty. The three of us took care of the kids and talked about ourselves.
Other than Sam, I can get along with almost anyone in school but I wouldn't consider myself popular. Tristan Harlowe came to camp when he was around 12-years old and was claimed in the first year. Rebecca Moore arrived to camp last year and is still unclaimed. Tristan believes that she'll either be a daughter of Aphrodite or Apollo but she's hoping it's Apollo.
"But… you have a dad, right? How would that even work?"
"Well they're gods, gender means nothing to them. I mean look at Zeus," Becky replied.
I can't argue with that logic. Guy would screw anything with two legs. Or one leg. Hell, he'd screw anything.
Greek Mythology is… weird. And apparently it's real too.
Anyways, the reason Becky is hoping to be an Apollo daughter is because in the past, children of Aphrodite have been getting bad luck when it comes with love. Apparently, it's been that way for a long time.
"Several iconic people in the past were children of Aphrodite and the majority of them suffered tragedy."
"Damn," I said. "Are they cursed or something?"
Tristan shrugged, "I can't say for sure, but for a while now, they've been getting hit hard. So at this moment, they're avoiding dating and relationships altogether."
"So what do they do now? Shipping and beauty advice?"
"Pretty much. Since they don't allow themselves to fall in love, they help others instead."
"That's worse!" I said. "Shouldn't they be allowed to love as well?"
"That's the life of a Half-Blood, Estelle," Tristan said. "Most of us don't get happy endings. Your brother's one of the lucky ones."
"...Well what about you, Becky? Why do you want to be a child of Apollo?"
Becky answered, "I… It's a secret. Besides, before I found out I was a half-blood, I always dreamed of being a doctor like my dad."
"I'm sure you'd make a great doctor in the future Becky," Tristan replied, unaware that the comment made Becky blush in secret.
But I saw it.
"I see," I said, smirking at Becky.
"Well let's hope everything works out for you, Becky."
After a while, Percy came back and took over watching over the kids and sent Becky and Tristan back to the Mess Hall.
"Where's Annabeth?" I asked.
"With Sam, helping get accustomed to the new cabin," Percy answered.
"You're still not going to let me at least try to use these powers?"
"No, Estelle. Curses are no joke, they'll only bring pain and suffering to not just you, but to everyone around you."
"So did Spider-Man and everyone loves him."
"He's not real!"
"And neither did mythology a few days ago. But here we are now!"
Percy and I are still arguing about the Mark of Arachnid. Sure, dark magic used to copy an iconic monster's abilities can be bad. But it was incomplete so there's no risk of it being turned into a monster or get mind-controlled by Arachne. Plus… IT'S FREAKING SPIDER-MAN! Don't tell me you never dreamed of being Spider-Man when you were little! That's like denying that you never attempted to do the Kamehameha when you were little. I saw Sam do it multiple times! In just one year! Last year! She's weird, I know. That's her charm!
"Look, I get what you're trying to do," Percy said. "You think that with this curse, you can protect yourself and help out Sam and the others. But I won't allow it."
"But why not?! Why are you pushing me out of your lives?! Luke and Silena will grow up to be around my age too and end up doing the same thing that you and Annabeth did. Shouldn't their awesome Aunt be strong enough to protect them instead of hiding away?"
Percy flinched.
"Don't get the kids involved in this. This is YOUR life."
"You guys ARE my life!" I yelled. I got up furiously and walked out with my jean jacket, my phone and some earbuds. I needed some time alone to catch my breath and cool off.
"Where are you going?!" Percy asked.
"Out!" I yelled as I slammed the front door and left.
As I left, I saw Annabeth coming and asked what's wrong. I said I was okay and needed to cool off. I put on my earbuds and put on some music. Of course, it's on shuffle so I find it funny that the first song to hit was Creep in acoustic by Radiohead.
I was never into 90's music until I watched Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3. Nor did I dream that I'd want a pet racoon. Yet, here we are.
I listened to this song as I passed by all the campers and saw them all just either hanging by the campfire, singing and chatting; a few doing practice at Archery; and some just hanging by the mess hall.
I find it funny and ironic. These campers may be considered creeps in the real world, yet nobody was unaware that they're special and unique. That's probably how they saw me at first too. They probably thought I'm someone special.
And now I'm a creep in camp. All because I have a curse about an evil spider-woman who tried to challenge the gods.
I found myself secluded in the woods, away from people, just so I can just cool off. My brother has always been overprotective. But despite that, I always admire him for being a cool and fun brother. He always says I was gifted and that I was going to do amazing things in the future.
So why is this any different? Yeah it's a harsh life; but that's life. I've seen it in the news; I'd see it in the streets of New York; I've seen it in our history. If this curse can make this world a little better, why can't I use it? I mean, look at the Kane, they build a school for those that have the potential to use magic. Of course, regular students attend it, but the majority have magical abilities that require guidance and training.
Frustrated by the situation, I kicked a small pebble as I continued walking. Then suddenly, the pebble hits me back.
"Ow! Who did that?!" I yelled. I looked around and saw no one nearby. Percy did say that even nymphs would be around Camp too. But so far, no one has made an appearance.
"I'm not in the mood to be messed with! So you better stop!" I yelled angrily.
A small gust of wind blew past me and then a loud thunderstorm hit behind me. I turned around and I saw something majestic.
It was this horse that was surrounded by clouds and lightning.
"Woah…" I said, surprised by the sudden reveal.
"Hey there, fella," I said toward the horse. I walked closer to it, slowly.
"Nice horsey."
The horse didn't flinch nor attempt to back away. It just stared at me with curiosity. Same as me.
I was at reach to pet it and it allowed me to.
"You don't seem to be from the stable here. Probably a wild one."
It leaned toward my hand and allowed me to stroke its hair. The horse felt comfortable with me; like, it was waiting to meet me this whole time.
"I take it you don't have a name, huh?" I asked.
It neighed and suddenly a small bolt of lightning hit the ground near me. I jumped in shock but realized something. On the ground were these symbols that appeared to be in Greek Term. I couldn't really understand it though.
"Woah, I didn't think you could do that." I said. "But I'm afraid I can't understand what it says, buddy. I don't speak-"
As I was speaking, the symbols started to change shape. It was becoming more clear and changing to English terms. It finally said a word.
TEMPEST
"Tempest… is that your name?" I asked.
It responded to my question.
"I see.." I said. "Well, it's nice to meet you, Tempest."
A/N:
Hi everyone! I hope you enjoyed the chapter. The next will be up soon, I just want to say that if I made any info error, don't hesitate to comment about it. I want to make this close to canon as possible but I may change some things on certain characters in the future. Only a couple of people.
Also, I just want to let you know that I've been going through a phase ever since I finished watching Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3 so you'll see some musical inspirations from the movies. If you seen the movie, you'd understand.
Anyways, I hope you enjoyed. Don't hesitate to comment or share this story with other fans of either Spider-man or Percy Jackson. I read the comments and take notes on them. I like to appreciate several of the readers that have been commenting as well:
Death Fury, I appreciate you commenting on every chapter and assuring me if they're good. I hope you'll continue reading my story to the end.
KryptonWrites, I read your comment and you are correct, I will post more often then once a month. Thank you for the suggestion. Hopefully I'll finish this story before the end of the year.
MKDemiGodzilla-Warrior, I read your comments and I totally agree about the Kane. I know that Sam's power seems overpowering (Because they are), but rest assured, she's will not in this story. She's still new so she doesn't have full control of it (yet).
As Always, I hope you enjoyed, see you next update.
