Chapter 18: Meet the Valdez

So, as you saw earlier, everything went dark. That was because of two things: One, I passed out, plain and simple. And two… Hazel can Shadow-Travel. If you don't know what that is, it's basically teleporting within shadows. Basically, children of Hades/Pluto can travel through the shadows but it drains a lot of their stamina for they are traveling through another realm.

So… if you think about it… we were kind of sent off… to the Shadow Realm?

…Ugh…

That was bad, I know. Moving on…

Since I was out cold at the moment, I started having another one of those dreams. I was in a dark area; nothing within miles away. I was still wearing my casual clothes, jean jacket with the Camp Half-Blood shirt and black jeans and sneakers.

I looked around and called out to anyone.

But no one answered.

Then I started hearing whispers.

"Hello?!" I yelled out. No one replied, but as soon as I turned around, I saw a shadowy figure walking from the darkness. She was wearing a cloak with a hood on so I couldn't get a good look at her face.

"You made quite a mess, Estelle Blofis…" She said,

"Who are you?" I asked.

The hooded lady laughed, "That is of no concern to you… for now."

Before I could even reply, four long arachnid legs appeared behind her back and lifted her upward, making her look more superior.

"What you should be concerned of if your dear brother is still alive."

I flinched because I know that she's right. My fight with Typhon ended in a disaster and it forced Percy to surrender, making him think he saved us when Typhon tricked him into taking him and never knowing we died. Thanks to Annabeth's quick thinking, we managed to escape and survive… I think?

"He is!" I replied. "I know it! He's Percy Jackson!"

"Yes, Percy Jackson, son of Poseidon; savior of Olympus; slayer of Kronus; the boy who bested Ares; and many more titles. But above all that, he's just a loyal friend, husband, son and brother."

"Shut up?! Who are you?!"

Think about it, Estelle Blofis," The hooded lady replied. "If you had just been a good little sister and obeyed your brother's request. He'd be at home, safe with his family."

"I said shut up!" I yelled, furious at her comments.

"But now… he may already be dead."

"SHUT UP!" I yelled. I woke up on a bed in what appears to be a kid's room. I can tell due to the many kids drawings on the wall as well as the toy chests at the corner. I looked out the window and can still hear the busy streets of New York; specifically, Brooklyn.

Yeah, we're back in Brooklyn.

You see there's another reason why Sam and I go to Brooklyn to hang out and such. Sure we both live in Manhattan and we do love it. But Brooklyn is home to one of my most favorite families I've ever met.

Suddenly, I heard the door open and as I looked back, I saw a beautiful woman, with auburn blonde hair tied into a ponytail, wearing a simple red sun dress and holding a tray of bandages and some liquid to clean wounds.

"Calypso!" I yelled. I tried to get up, but I was still hurt from my fight.

"Easy, Estelle," Calypso replied as she placed the tray at the counter next to the bed. "You barely escaped with your life last night."

I groaned in pain as I slowly sat up on the edge of the bed to greet her.

Calypso Valdez.

(One of) The most beautiful woman I ever met in my life; married to a genius mechanic with a golden heart; an amazing cook and singer.

"Where's everyone? Where's Sam?"

"Annabeth and the others are downstairs with Leo, talking about their next plan. As for Samantha, well, she's in the next room, resting. Took a bad hit and needs time to heal. But, she's okay for the most part."

I sigh in relief.

"Thank you, Calypso. What's everyone doing downstairs?"

Calypso replied, "They're planning their strategy to rescue Percy."

"What?" I yelled. "Without me?!"

I quickly got up and ran past Calypso. I hear her calling out to me to stay in bed. I headed downstairs and walked into an auto-shop garage. I knew it was Leo's due to the Latino music being played through the radio and his workshop of his little side projects.

Guy's an inventor with little to no wisdom to safety. Lost count of how many times he nearly burned down the shop. So did Calypso.

"Estelle!" I heard a voice. I turned around and saw none other than the man himself. With his mechanic suit, his scruffy hair and toothy grin with oil-stained cheeks.

Leo Valdez.

"Leo!" I said.

"Hey, Estelle. Beth told me about your situation."

"She did?"

It's a good thing Annabeth isn't here to hear him call her that. She hates that nickname and if she heard Leo call her that, he'd never set foot on American soil for a year.

"Yeah, kind of surprising. It's not everyday you can say we have our own friendly neighborhood, Spider-Man."

I rolled my eyes, "Already made those jokes a while back, Leo."

"Well… Annabeth and the others are in the diner and…"

"…And?" I asked.

"Well… you'd wish you're dealing with Percy."

Oh, that's not good.

Leo walked with me into the diner side. The diner side of the Valdez workshop is Calypso's expertise. She can make one heck of a stew. I remember one time Mom and Dad took me here with Sam to try out the food.

It was truly divine.

Anyways, I spotted Annabeth with Frank and Hazel but I noticed they're a bit bruised up and tired, especially Hazel.

"Hazel?"

"She's okay, "Annabeth replied. "She had to use Shadow Travel to get us out of there."

"Shadow Travel?"

Annabeth explained. It's basically a way of transport where one can travel through the shadows. However, it drains a lot out of you if you constantly use it. Hazel is still practicing with it so shadow traveling takes a lot out of her.

"So she's just resting. That's good."

"No!" Annabeth yelled. "None of this is good! Hazel and Frank are drained and worn out, Typhon has the trident AND Percy; Monsters are getting smarter and stronger and now Olympus is about to be attacked and we have nothing to go up against Typhon and his new magic!"

I flinched as Annabeth snapped.

"Okay, things are bad now. But you've been through worse, right? We can get through this."

Annabeth takes a deep breath and calms down a bit.

"Yeah, right now we're trying to find where Typhon has taken Percy. He needs him alive if he is going to do what I think he's going to do."

"And that is…?"

"Typhon is going to break the barrier that protects Olympus using the blood of one of the big three," Calypso replied as she walked down the steps.

"What?!" I said.

Calypso and Annabeth explained. Apparently it's an old spell that nullifies magical barriers using the blood and powers of titans. The Big Three, Zeus; Poseidon and Hades, are close enough to have titan blood in them. Therefore, children of the Big Three are acceptable as a substitute for blood. However, the ritual must take place within the Summer Solstice, which is in 8 days. Also, the blood must be fresh within 24-hours. Which explains why Typhon needed Percy alive.

"And now he has everything he needs…" I said.

I felt guilty for it. After all, it was my fault that Percy got captured. If I just stayed in Camp, he wouldn't have gone out and tried to find me and Sam.

"I'm sorry…" I mumbled.

Annabeth sighed, "Look, let's just focus on finding Percy. Typhon will need to be close to Olympus if he plans to use the spell to infiltrate Olympus."

"Then he'd still be somewhere in Manhattan then," Frank implied. "I can scout ahead and see if I can find any leads on him. I should be fine if I use my abilities to blend in."

"Good idea, I should be able to replenish my strength by then and I can use my magic to sneak us in," Hazel added.

"Then what about-,"

"You are staying," Annabeth interrupted, knowing exactly what I was going to say. "The last thing any of us need is you getting hurt again."

"But what about Typhon's secret weapon?! None of you stood a chance except me."

"And look what happened! Percy's taken, Sam's hurt and you nearly died!"

I was shocked and surprised at Annabeth's anger. She never yells at me like this.

"Annabeth," Calypso replied with concern. She looked back at her and took a deep breath.

"I'm sorry," She replied, "I'm just… not myself when Percy goes missing…"

I recall how Percy told me and Sam about how he was taken suddenly to New Rome, with no memories except Annabeth's name. How she was committed to finding him and bringing him home, safe and sound.

"Look, Estelle. We'll find a way to save Percy and stop Typhon. But right now, I need you to stay with Calypso and Leo. They're the safest place close by. Once this is over, we'll cure you up and it'll all be back to normal."

"But sis, I can fight! I can do this! I messed up last time but I can do better!" I fisted my hands tightly as I was furious to be treated as a kid. I couldn't stop Typhon last time, but I know I can! "Besides, how are you going to stand up against his magic that weakens you guys?"

"We'll manage, Estelle. But for now, just stay here where it's safe… you're just not strong enough…"

"Then when?!" I asked. "When am I strong enough?! When were you guys strong enough to face monsters?!"

"Who says we were?" Annabeth replied. "I can plan out scenarios and strategies to face monsters and coming evils, but… We're never ready to face the consequences of our actions… the results of who lives… and dies…"

I saw a glint of sadness in her eyes. Percy already told me that he and Annabeth have been through a lot. But, they looked happy and at peace as far as I knew. How long were they carrying this burden?

"Annabeth…"

She comes up to me and hugs tightly.

"You have a good heart, Estelle. That's why we don't want this for you. You deserve better."

She let go and spoke to Calypso.

"Watch over them, okay? They can cause quite a ruckus."

Calypso nodded.

And with that, Annabeth; Frank and Hazel left.

Leaving me here with the Valdez.

Later that day, I was kind of upset so I just hid myself in my room. I heard a knock on the door and replied to come in. It opened and behind it was a little girl with caramel curly hair and brown eyes. She is wearing overalls and a t-shirt with flowers on them. A simple kid she looks, but don't let that trick you.

"Aunt Stella!"

I smiled, "Hey Zoe, how have you been?"

Zoe Esperanza Valdez, she's around the same age as Percy and Annabeth's first kid and is quite a troublemaker, like her dad; but she's as kind and smart as her mom. That reminds me, I need to talk more about Leo Valdez as well. You see, he's Hispanic, outgoing and a goofball, but he has a good heart and is always looking out for people. He makes terrible jokes and crazy pranks yet he can fix up anything no matter how broken it is (mechanically speaking). He is also a Son of Hephaestus, the god of blacksmith and fire, which is why he is one of the best mechanics here in Brooklyn. He can also burst in flames… no joke, he can literally be, and I quote, too hot sometimes. Despite being a good guy and all, however, he didn't have a happy childhood. When he was young, he lost his mother to a fire he caused (which I later found out was because of Gaia, the Earth Goddess) and his family disowned him. He was sent to orphanages after orphanages until he met Percy and his friends, which later ends up with him meeting Calypso. The two were both without family and ended up being in this place called the Waystation up in Indianapolis.

Speaking of, Calypso just arrived as well with some food.

"Hey Estelle, Sam's still asleep so I'm going to check up on her and we're all going to eat downstairs. Wanna join?"

"Sure, I'll come down and eat."

Oh and before I forget, I need to let you guys know something about Calypso.

She's… also my sister.

Not by blood, by the way; but by adoption. A while back, my mom met with Calypso and wanted to adopt her into the family name. For some reason, she never had a last name and she knows she needed to have some sort of official legal name. Of course, in the end, she married Leo and is now a Valdez. But still, she was still in high school at the time with no record of her past so she couldn't really just go there without some sort of documents on her. I mean, she's most likely to be an Immigrant from Greece considering her name and accent, along with being able to speak Greek properly. Which leads me to a question that I never got an answer to.

"So Calypso," I asked in the diner. "How did you know about Leo and everyone being… well, not normal."

Calypso raised an eyebrow.

"Really? You can't figure it out?"

"Not really. I mean, I figured you'd be amazed by it since you are Greek due to your name and- oh…" The sudden realization hits me.

"Are you… THE Calypso? As in the Calypso from… the Odyssey?"

Calypso nodded and chuckled.

"HOW?!" I yelled.

Calypso then began her story. How after the Titan War (The first one), she was imprisoned on an island for nearly three millennia and was forced to fall in love with heroes shipwrecked to her island. And unfortunately, Percy was among them.

"Ugh," I said, trying so hard not to puke. I'm sure you guys are used to it. But me? This is my adopted sister and my brother by blood! It's like the Oedipus incident in the Sphinx story.

DO NOT LOOK THAT UP!

Anyways, after Percy turned her down and returned to the mainland, she then met Leo and their first encounter was… as expected.

"I wanted him off my island as quickly as possible."

Leo laughed as we all ate.

"Hey now, you have to admit. I did have my charm."

Calypso rolls her eyes.

"I'll admit," She replied. "You have some positive traits. But you annoy me to death."

Leo snickered, "Yet, you married me- OW!"

Calypso stepped on his foot under the table.

But yeah, they fell in love but Leo left to go save the world with his friends from the evil mama Earth and the Giants. They won in the end, of course, but not without sacrifice. In the end, Leo gave up his life to save his friends and stop Gaia from returning.

So in the end, sadly, he died.

…But he lived!

He came back from the dead to free Calypso and they lived happily ever after.

Sort of.

They had their ups and downs. But of course, every relationship has them. They persevered and got married, had a kid and started a business together. Though for some reason, instead of having their business at their old home, Indianapolis, they decided to have it here in Brooklyn.

"Why is that?" I asked.

Leo responded.

"I figured that with the business booming, Calypso and I can help out the camp. Other than cars and mechanical problems, I can make some good gear to help campers on their quests."

"So then, all those weapons, armors and other trinkets…"

"Yeah, I help make those. Along with my wife of course."

"I know a thing or two, but Leo here is the genius," Calypso added.

I chuckled.

These two are so different yet destined to be. It's nice to know that at least one of the iconic characters in the story with a tragic life found a happy ending.

"Estelle, you haven't been eating much, you okay?" Calypso asked.

I sigh and replied, "I just don't get it, Calypso. Why does Percy and and everyone not believe in me? I'm smart enough to know my strengths and weaknesses. I'm brave enough to face monsters. So why don't they believe in me?!" I yelled, slamming at the table, startling everyone. But Leo and Calypso know where I'm going with this. After all, they were also in on Percy not telling me about this life.

"Look, Estelle, I get it. Even I didn't agree to Percy hiding all of this from you," Leo replied.

"Thank you!"

"But I do agree that you shouldn't be a part of it."

"Seriously?!" I yelled.

"Let me explain… or rather, let me show you something."

Author's Note:

Hey guys, sorry for the delays. Lots of stuff happened with me and my editor, especially me. I was almost done with this chapter last month but... I suffered a loss at the moment. My second dog, a German Shepperd named Lobo, passed away in a accident during my walk with him. It happened so fast and to this day, blame myself for it. I'm getting better though, but it was traumatic for me.

But, I'm back and not only am I posting one chapter, but TWO chapters. And once I get time after my family is visiting, I will work on the next chapter. The next two chapters after these are also my most favorite ones I want to make.

Also, about Calypso, I wanted to do something different. Every usually goes that usual head-cannon kind of thing, so I thought I'd do something different that no-one would most likely would not anticipate. And so, Calypso is adopted into the Jackson family. Annabeth and Calypso got along and became best of friends, Percy apologized to Calypso and her to him. Leo and Calypso got married later on and has a child together, Zoe Esperanza Valdez. I chose them living in Brooklyn so that they can still be close to camp and help campers prep for quests and battles.

I know this won't appeal to everyone but I'm sticking to it.

Hoped you enjoy and until next update.
