We're now in the season of Johto League Champions of the Johto Saga! To tell the truth, the song "Born to Be a Winner" is one of my favorite English Pokémon opening songs of the franchise.

Chapter 20: A Golden Opportunity

There was a huge celebration after we had saved Molly and Greenfield from the Unown. The head butler of the Hale mansion arranged a party for everyone in town to join. Skylar left to return to the ruins to see if Professor Hale was back now that the Unown were gone. My family and friends joined the party, but I left after an hour because my senses got overstimulated. It was still fun and I grew a little close to Molly. Probably because I knew how she was thinking because I was familiar with having a child-like mind.

We left Greenfield the next day and asked Firered and Charizard if they could fly us to Goldenrod City. They eagerly brought us to the outskirts of the city which took a couple of hours to reach. Mom and Professor Oak took a flying taxi back to Kanto, but we shared some hugs and got scolded by the adults before we departed. Lisa wished us the best and told me to keep her number in case we would meet again someday. I also heard words about Molly's mother waking up from her coma in the hospital, so it must be a good omen for the Hale family.

The Goldenrod City was just as big as Saffron City, if not even bigger because it was a coastal city bursting of life and had skyscrapers reaching high up to the sky. The streets were crowded with so many people I was scared I would lose sight of my brother and friends.

"Wow! This city is humongous!" Ash exclaimed as he eagerly looked around.

"Pikaaa…", Pikachu stared at the skyscraper with an open mouth.

Misty jogged to a store and stared at the goods through the windows. "And this shop has a discount it's like robbing a bank!"

"Togipriii!" Togepi chirped happily, probably being happy for seeing Misty being so enthusiastic.

I linked my arm with Ash's after I accidently bumped into somebody and they glared at me. I flinched by the stare and cuddled closer to my brother. "It's a little scary to me, though…"

"'Cause it's crowded?" Ash asked before he patted my head. "Don't worry, I won't lose sight of you. But guys, we've gotta go!"

"You mean go introduce ourselves to the pretty ladies?" Brock said while he had his full attention on the girls older than him.

"No! We've gotta go find the Gym!" Ash retorted. "We can do some sightseeing after we get our next badges!"

"Oh yeah, I almost forgot about it…", Misty laughed sheepishly.

"Umm… Misty, I have a question", I spoke up. "Why are you so interested in shopping when you probably won't use all the clothes and shoes and accessories you buy?"

"Because you never know when you'll have a golden opportunity to wear them!" Misty replied, acting like a teacher.

"That was a pun now, wasn't it…?" Ash mumbled quietly before he realized something. "But if you buy stuff, how are you gonna fit them in your duffle bag?"

"I'll just keep the tiny stuff and mail the rest home to the Cerulean Gym", Misty replied.

"Then I suggest we go locate the Gym and the twins can have their match and we'll go shopping tomorrow", Brock said after his soul returned from the love land. "I need to buy groceries for the food supply."

"Alright! Then let's go to the Gym!" Ash cheered happily. "And this time, I'll be facing the Gym Leader first!"

"Pika pika!" Pikachu cheered alongside my brother.

I remembered Bugsy's warning about the Goldenrod Gym Leader. They were supposedly one of the toughest Gym Leaders in Johto, which made me wonder what Pokémon type they were using.

I could use the battle between Ash and the Gym Leader to observe how the Gym Leader handled their Pokémon and figure out counterattacks against them.

XXXXXXXXXX

Much to Ash's disappointment, the Gym turned out to be closed for the day. I thought it was because the Gym Leader was having lunch, but it was closed nonetheless. That changed our plans, so Brock grabbed his Johto guidebook and flipped the pages until he found Goldenrod City. He suggested we should go to the Goldenrod Galleria for some shopping. We could see the skyscraper in the distance, but getting there wasn't easy.

The streets in Goldenrod City were like a maze. Whenever we turned a corner, we found ourselves in an alleyway and dead ends. We used the Galleria as a landmark to get there faster, but it didn't really help us that much.

"It looks so close and yet we're so far away…", Misty mumbled disappointingly.

"Should we ask for someone to show us the way?" I asked.

"I love the sound of that!" Brock recovered, looking all eager to ask a girl to be our guide.

"Then let's go back to the main street and ask someone", Ash nodded.

Pikachu walked ahead of us and was just about to step out on the open streets when he ran into a Clefairy. The two Pokémon collided with each other and got knocked down to the ground.

"Pikachu!" Ash called worriedly.

"Clefairy fairy airy!" Clefairy shouted at Pikachu, probably blaming him for not paying attention on where he was going.

"Pika…", Pikachu lowered his ears while apologizing to the angry Clefairy.

"I'm sorry, Clefairy! Pikachu didn't mean to run into you", Ash called before he picked up the pink Pokémon and gently caressed the little bruise that got formed after the collision. "There, there. You okay, you two?"

"Fairy!" Clefairy chirped happily, nodding to Pikachu.

"Pika", Pikachu nodded, feeling a little relieved that Clefairy had accepted his apology.

"Clefairy!" a teenage girl, looking to be around Brock's age, ran up to us. She reminded me of Nurse Joy for a split second because of her pink hair and ponytails and the white and hot pink sports uniform she was wearing. "I'm so sorry! Did my Clefairy bother you?"

"No, it didn't cause any trouble for us", Ash smiled. "Clefairy and Pikachu accidently ran into each other."

"Oh no", the girl gasped softly and picked up Pikachu to gently cradle him. "I'm sorry for Clefairy running into you, Pikachu. I know the cure of dealing with the boo-boo." She planted a kiss on Pikachu's forehead where a bruise had formed. "There. You'll be better soon."

"Chaa…", Pikachu purred in joy by the affection.

I jumped when I heard a sudden bang behind me. Brock had hit himself on the head against the brick wall so a bruise got formed on his forehead. "Could you kiss my boo-boo so it gets healed too?" he asked, getting into his love mode again.

I found that a little creepy, but Misty dealt with him by dragging him away by the ear. "Can't you tell she kisses boo-boos and not bozos?" the water-type Trainer told the love struck boy.

"Owowow!" Brock yelped as he was dragged a few meters away from us.

"Your friend's funny", the girl giggled. "Are you guys new in town?"

"Well, we're on a journey, so we're just passing by", Ash explained. "My name's Ash."

"I'm his twin sister, Ashley", I introduced myself with a light nod.

Misty and Brock walked back to us now that Brock was no longer acting like a puppy. "I'm Misty and this is my little baby, Togepi."

"Togiprii!" Togepi chirped gladly.

"And I'm Brock, a future Pokémon Breeder."

"Nice to meet you all", Whitney smiled before she and Ash switched their Pokémon back. "Are you perhaps looking for the Pokémon Center?"

"We're actually on our way to the Goldenrod Galleria, but we've got lost", Misty confessed.

"The Goldenrod Galleria? I'd be more than happy to take you there", Whitney said. "It's one of the best department stores in Johto. I often shop there and they've got great products."

"Even clothes?" Misty asked with her voice full of hope.

"Especially clothes", Whitney smiled.

"Alright! Let's go on a shopping spree!" Misty cheered happily, throwing her fist up in the air.

"Shopping spree… My worst nightmare…", I mumbled quietly to myself.

XXXXXXXXXX

The next two hours was such a pain. Whitney and Misty bought clothes, shoes, accessories and even makeup whenever they saw a store having large discounts. Ash, Brock and I got the most "important" job, according to the girls, to carry their bags and boxes. Brock wanted to go to the grocery store that was in the galleria, but he wasn't allowed to leave.

I got so exhausted by just walking around and waiting for the girls to finish shopping I collapsed on a bench once we were outside in a small park that was empty. My ears were ringing by all the noise from the crowd and even the music some stores had played while we were there. It was at these points I was grateful I came from a small town that didn't have the same bursting life like a big city. I've always preferred the forest and quiet nature over the urban cities.

"It was fun shopping, Misty!" Whitney told our friend. "Thank you for helping me pick out some of the clothes."

"You're welcome", Misty smiled. "And thanks to you too. You've got great taste in fashion."

"I've lived here ever since I was a little girl, so I know the latest trends", Whitney giggled before she threw a curious glance at me. "Why didn't you want to pick something, Ashley?"

"Not interested in fashion…", I replied as I leaned against the bench, closing my eyes to just take in the silence around me.

"How can a girl not like fashion?" Whitney asked, sounding purely confused.

"Ashley has…different interests", Ash replied. "Right, Pikachu?"

"Pika pika."

"I guess that's true", Whitney laughed sheepishly. "I've got other interests besides shopping and Clefairy's part of it. Right, Clefairy?"

"Fairy!" Clefairy chirped in response.

"Well, it was fun meeting you guys, but Clefairy and I better get going", Whitney said before she took her bags from Brock. "Oh yeah, I almost forgot? Are any of you challenging the Pokémon Gyms in Johto?"

"I sure do!" Ash replied eagerly. "Ashley and I are gonna participate in the Johto League, so we went to the Gym here, but it was closed."

"Why didn't you tell me from the beginning you were challengers?" Whitney said, which made me open my eyes, sensing she was about to say something important and I had to pay attention. "I could've taken you to the Gym right away and open it for you."

"Open it…?" I repeated softly.

"Do you work there, Whitney?" Ash asked.

"Pika…?" Pikachu tilted his head to the side, confused as well.

"Yep! And I've got the important role of the Goldenrod City Gym Leader!" Whitney exclaimed.

It took a couple of seconds to comprehend the news. Whitney is the Gym Leader Bugsy mentioned? The one who was said to be one of the toughest in Johto? Her cute appearance didn't really scream "powerful", but maybe it was just deception.

Whitney called for the Gym's female referee, so she was there when we returned to the Gym. Ash went first against Whitney in a two-versus-two battle. Totodile defeated Clefairy with ease, but then the real beast was released. It was a Miltank and a strong one too. She used Rollout to easily knock out Totodile and Pikachu, so Ash lost on his first try.

After the brief observation, I thought I had an idea how to deal with Miltank, so when Whitney came back after healing her Pokémon at the Pokémon Center it was my turn to battle.

"Good luck, Ashley", Ash patted me on the shoulder. "Be careful with that Miltank."

"Pika…", Pikachu whined softly as he licked a bruise on his paw. He and Totodile got treated by Brock with a Super Potion, but they needed to rest to heal properly.

"I will", I nodded before I walked up to the battlefield.

"The Gym battle between Gym Leader Whitney and challenger Ashley Ketchum is about to begin!" the referee announced. "Each will use two Pokémon and the battle ends when one's Pokémon are unable to battle! Only the challenger may substitute Pokémon!"

"Let's go and show them your true strength, Clefairy!" Whitney shouted and threw her Poké Ball, releasing Clefairy.

"Fairyyy!"

"Alright!" I grabbed a Poké Ball from my belt and threw it. "I choose you, Trica!"

"Furreet!" Trica shrieked in joy once she was out.

"Begin battle!" the referee called.

"Trica, use Fury Swipes!" I shouted.

"Ret!" Trica snarled as she ran forward and slashed Clefairy twice with her sharp claws.

"Fairy!" Clefairy screamed in pain and got knocked down on its back, but it swiftly got up on its feet again.

"You okay, Clefairy?" Whitney called.

"Fairy!" Clefairy nodded in response.

"Use your Metronome!" Whitney shouted.

"Clefairy, airy, airy, airy…!" Clefairy wiggled her small hands while pointing her claws upward. Trica and I waited patiently for Clefairy to activate its Metronome. It took a few seconds before Clefairy used its mystic energy and activated a move.

"FAIRYYY!" Clefairy roared in an intimidating way. Trica flinched by the cry and retreated to her Poké Ball, only to force Cedric out to the battlefield.

"Lar?" Cedric looked around confusedly, wondering why he got called out.

"That was a Roar!" Brock shouted behind me.

I nodded with a cold sweat, grunting to myself. Now that Cedric was out, that meant he was the second Pokémon I had to use for the Gym battle. It ruined my plans against Miltank; I wanted to use Hikaru against the powerhouse to slow it down with his electric moves.

The only thing I could do now was to adapt to the situation.

"Cedric, let's return the Roar with a Screech!" I shouted.

"Larvi…TAAAR!" Cedric screeched so loudly the shockwaves engulfed Clefairy.

Clefairy shrieked and tried covering its ears, but its arms were too short. It had to endure the screech while its defense got lowered.

"Clefairy, use Metronome again!" Whitney yelled.

"A-Airy…", Clefairy struggled to endure the noise while wiggling its arms left and right again. The Screech ended just as Clefairy used its power to fire a huge water beam toward Cedric. Cedric panicked at the sight of the water attack, which I assumed was Hydro Pump.

"Dodge it!" I yelled quickly.

Cedric jumped to the side, barely dodging the move that ended up hitting the wall next to the bench where Ash and our friends sat. I turned around and saw a crack got formed after the collision, which indicated that move hadn't been a normal Hydro Pump.

"N-No way…", I stuttered, recognizing the move now. "T-That was…a Hydro Cannon!"

"W-Wow, that was a surprise, even to me", Whitney called from the other side of the battlefield. "You guys okay?!"

"Yeah, we're good!" Misty shouted. "But maybe we should move to the gallery instead."

"Yeah, let's move before Clefairy uses another Hydro Cannon", Ash agreed.

I turned back to the battlefield where both Pokémon waited for the next commands. "Cedric, use Bite!"

"Laar!" Cedric hissed and dashed toward Clefairy, baring his baby teeth at the fairy Pokémon.

"Clefairy, counterattack with Double Slap!" Whitney shouted.

"Fairy!" Clefairy chirped in response and ran toward Cedric, raising one of its paws in the air.

The two Pokémon ran toward the middle of the battlefield, looking like they were going to crash into each other. Cedric opened his mouth wider as energy formed into a pair of teeth in front of him. He closed his mouth, forcing the energy teeth to bite Clefairy before it could hit him. Clefairy bounced like a bouncy ball on the ground before it crashed on its stomach, throwing up some dust in the air.

"Clefairy!" Whitney shrieked worriedly.

"Airy…", Clefairy whimpered, unable to move.

"Clefairy is unable to battle! Larvitar wins!" the referee called, lifting up the green flag for the challenger.

"Great job, Cedric!" I praised him. "You finished Trica's work amazingly."

"Tar!" Cedric smiled widely.

Whitney pouted irritably before she clapped her cheeks to remove her frown. She recalled her fainted Clefairy back to its Poké Ball. "You were great, Clefairy. Miltank will avenge you", the pinkette said before she switched Poké Balls. "You may have defeated Clefairy and got lucky her Hydro Cannon missed your Larvitar, but things are about to change. You gonna switch back to your Furret?"

"No", I replied. "I'm keeping Cedric on the field."

"Okay", Whitney glared, getting very serious, and threw her Poké Ball. "Let's roll, Miltank!"

"Mil mil!" Miltank mooed as she came out of the capture device and landed on the battlefield with a bang.

"Be careful, Cedric!" I warned him. "Miltank is powerful, so we need to chip her health down."

"Tar!" Cedric nodded, understanding my strategy.

"That won't help!" Whitney shouted. "Miltank, use Rollout!"

"Miiil!" Miltank mooed and rolled herself into a ball before rolling toward Cedric.

"Cedric, start a Sandstorm!" I shouted quickly.

Cedric gathered his energy as sand began swirling around him. Miltank rammed into him and kicked him up in the air just as he released an aggressive Sandstorm in the Gym. I coughed softly when some of the sand got inside my lungs, but I quickly covered my mouth and nose to not inhale more. Cedric landed on the ground on his back, but he quickly jumped up on his feet, barely injured by the Rollout.

"You okay, Cedric?" I shouted, my voice slightly muffled by the hand.

"Lar!" Cedric responded with a nod.

Whitney coughed by the sandstorm, but her eyes were open wide. "M-Miltank… Use Rollout again!"

Miltank's body rolled across the field, heading toward Cedric again. Her speed had increased, meaning her strength got a boost after the first successful hit on my Pokémon. I didn't have time to shout the next command when Miltank slammed into Cedric and threw him up in the air again.

"Cedric, use Screech!" I yelled.

Cedric flipped in the air and screamed so loudly the shockwaves hit the ground and traveled until they engulfed Miltank. The screech must have been very strong because Miltank uncurled herself and covered her ears, canceling the move. "Miiiiil!" she mooed in pain as she folded the ears to her head. It also gave Cedric time to land on the ground without having to fear about getting hit by the next Rollout.

"Cedric, use Screech again!" I shouted before I coughed, feeling he had to lower Miltank's defense more. Miltank was known to have a very good defense.

"Miltank, use Stomp on Larvitar before it can scream again!" Whitney panicked before she coughed by the sand swirling in the air.

"M-Miil!" Miltank coughed by the dust, but she still ran toward Cedric, kicking up dirt. Cedric was just about to screech when Miltank jumped up and stomped him, pinning him to the ground.

"Cedric!" I yelled worriedly, even though I knew the move Stomp was a normal-type and normal-type moves weren't so effective against rock-type Pokémon.

"Use Stomp again!" Whitney removed her hand from her face to shout, but she quickly covered it again after she started coughing.

"Mil mil…!" Miltank raised her foot from Cedric, preparing to injure him again.

"Jump back and use Rock Slide!" I shouted now that there was an opening.

"Lar!" Cedric quickly got up on his feet and jumped backwards before Miltank stomped the ground instead of him. He then used his power to summon multiple boulders and trapped Miltank with them.

"Mil mil?!" Miltank mooed, sounding panicked of the situation.

"Cedric, jump inside the trap and use Bite!" I shouted.

"Miltank, use Milk Drink to restore your health!" Whitney yelled.

Cedric jumped up on the boulders scattered around the trap while I heard Miltank making drinking noises, probably drinking her own milk. I couldn't see her through the cracks and the sandstorm blocked some of the view. However Miltank drinks its milk, I don't want to know.

Cedric jumped down to the trap and the next thing I heard was a painful shriek from Miltank after she got bitten. At the same time, the sandstorm subsided, clearing up the Gym so I could see the field better and I no longer had to shield my mouth and nose.

"Get out of there now, Cedric!" I shouted.

"Miltank, use Rollout to get out of the trap!" Whitney shouted.

Cedric climbed up and out of the boulder trap before the boulders got crushed by Miltank's Rollout. Some of the shards scattered across the field and bounced onto Cedric's hard body, barely doing any damage. Miltank rolled back to Whitney's side of the field and uncurled herself, revealing she had some bruises and panted tiredly, so she was getting weak even though she had just used Milk Drink.

"Good work, Miltank. Now let's dazzle Larvitar with Attract!" Whitney posed like a cute idol girl with the back of her hands resting under her chin and winked. My heart beat a little harder and my cheeks blossomed up, feeling embarrassed if she had winked at me. No one had ever flirted with me before, so I had no idea how to react.

"Mil mil!" Miltank mooed and winked at Cedric, sending a pink energy heart from that blink. The heart traveled across the field and hit Cedric, forming more hearts around him as he fell in love with Miltank.

"Laaar…", Cedric chirped, his eyes pink and full of hearts like he got hypnotized.

"Cedric, snap out of it and use Bite!" I shouted, hoping my voice would snap him out of it.

"Taaar…", Cedric hummed, paying attention on Miltank who posed with Whitney.

"Cedric!" I shouted irritably, kinda losing my patience a little.

"Miltank, use Rollout!" Whitney shouted.

"Mil mil!" Miltank rolled herself into a ball and rolled toward Cedric who was immobilized by love.

"Cedric, block Miltank's path with Rock Slide!" I shouted, now cold sweating by the pressure that Cedric might not last for long.

"Larvi…", Cedric remained on the same pose, eyeing the rolling Miltank without realizing the danger. "Vi… TAAAR!" he shrieked as Miltank hit him and threw him back to the ground.

"Cedric!" I shouted worriedly.

"L-Lar…", Cedric whimpered as he forced himself up on his feet, his tough body covered by marks of Miltank's rolling attack. His eyes looked a little clearer after that hit, so perhaps he could hear my voice now.

"Miltank, use Rollout again!" Whitney shouted.

Miltank rolled across the field and headed toward Cedric again, suddenly looking a little bigger, but that could've been a hallucination by the overwhelming feelings inside me.

"Cedric, use Rock Slide!" I shouted. "You can do it!"

"Laar!" Cedric shouted and jumped up in the air, barely dodging the rolling Miltank. He summoned new boulders and threw them on Miltank's path. Miltank dodged a few, but one large and thick boulder blocked her path and she crashed into it, unable to break it. The rest of the boulders fell down around her, throwing up dust and dirt, so we couldn't see her condition.

"Miltank!" Whitney shouted worriedly.

Cedric landed on the ground as we waited for the dust to disperse. It slowly faded away, revealing a pile of boulders where Miltank was buried under. Cedric collected his energy and used it to make the boulders fade away, crumbling into soil. Miltank lied on the ground, half-buried by the soil, not moving an inch.

Whitney gasped loudly in shock by the sight. "Miltank!" she yelled worriedly.

"Miltank is unable to battle! Larvitar wins! The winner of the Gym battle is challenger Ashley!" the referee announced, raising the green flag.

"Alright!" Ash cheered from the stands. "You beat Whitney, Ashley!"

I waved to my brother and friends before I crouched down so I could hug Cedric. He was hurt and weak, but he still had strength to walk to me. "You were amazing, Cedric. You did well against Miltank, even when you were in love with her."

"Laar…", Cedric laughed sheepishly.

Whitney fell down on her knees and began bawling her eyes. "Noo! My precious cute Miltank! You meanie!"

I got very surprised by her sudden change of behavior. She acted like a mature teenager hours ago and now she was crying like a baby for losing a match? "Um…", I mumbled, not knowing what I should do.

"Don't worry about her", the referee told me as she walked to me. "Whitney always cries after she loses a battle, but she'll get over the defeat soon."

"Does this really happen every time she loses?" Misty asked as she and the boys approached us.

"Yeah", the referee nodded.

"I want to comfort her, but I can't…", Brock mumbled, holding himself back to respect Whitney's privacy.

Whitney cried waterfalls for a couple of seconds before she calmed down and wiped the tears off. She held back a few hiccups as she held up a Poké Ball. "R-Re-Return, M-Milky…"

Miltank returned to her Poké Ball, mooing softly. Whitney took a couple of deep breaths before she got up from the ground and walked to us. I was feeling a little bad now that I won against her. I know how bad it can feel when you lose a battle, but you had to accept defeat in order to learn from it.

Whitney put up a tired smile, her eyes red by the crying. "Sorry you had to see me like that…", she laughed sheepishly. "You see, I'm new to the job as a Gym Leader, so I…haven't learned to accept defeat just yet."

"You're still a great Pokémon Trainer, Whitney!" Brock encouraged her. "Your Miltank's strength shows how much you've been training her!"

"Thank you, Brock…", Whitney sniffed before she grabbed something from the pocket of her shorts. "Ashley, I got impressed by our battle. You've earned yourself a Plain Badge." She held her hand open, revealing a badge on her palm. It was a little plain, given by its name, but it still looked nice with the silver and yellow colors.

"Thank you, Whitney", I nodded and accepted the badge. "I had a great battle with you too."

"Laaarvitar!" Cedric chirped next to me.

Whitney giggled before she turned to my brother. "Ash, you're always welcome back to challenge me again. I'll be waiting for you."

"You bet I'll come back tomorrow, better and stronger!" Ash exclaimed determinedly.

"Pika!" Pikachu nodded, determined to get revenge.

"Oh… Tomorrow, I'll be going to my uncle's Miltank dairy to help him", Whitney revealed. "So the Gym will be closed again."

"Whaaat?! No way!" Ash exclaimed in shock.

"You guys can come with me and help my uncle out if you want to learn more about Miltanks", Whitney suggested.

"Then I'll definitely go!" Ash shouted, quickly getting over the disappointment. "I'm gonna study the Miltanks and learn as much as I can to defeat your Miltank!"

And Ash actually did it the very next day after we saved the farm from Team Rocket's schemes. With teamwork of Totodile and Pikachu, they defeated Miltank and Ash earned himself a Plain Badge too.

Three badges down, five more to go!

In all honesty… I was hoping for a lighter Gym challenge after this Gym nightmare with Miltank.

XXXXXXXXXX

The Gym battle between Ashley and Whitney is based on the one I had in the game. When her Clefairy used Metronome and revealed it to become a Hydro Cannon, my heart almost dropped, fearing it would hit and defeat Cedric in one try. Thank goodness it missed! That was a whole lot scarier than Miltank's Rollout.
