A quick note here! In the Kanto Saga, I described Bill to be around his late thirties, but I've changed it so he's in his late twenties instead. Why did I do that? The answer can be found in this chapter.

Chapter 26: Trouble's Brewing

Straight after Ash's win in the Ecruteak Gym, we went to a traditional restaurant to celebrate both our victories. We got to eat some traditional dishes I never had before in Kanto. We had cabbage pancakes that the staff cooked in front of us on a hot iron plate. Eating it directly after being cooked was thrilling, especially after watching how the staff prepared the dish.

"Yum! This was delicious!" Ash smiled widely with mayonnaise smeared around his mouth.

"Pika pika!" Pikachu nodded, looking the same as my brother after he had finished eating the last bite he shared with Togepi.

"I've heard about fried cabbage before, but this was really good", I nodded as I wiped my mouth clean from sauce and oil.

Misty sipped on her green tea and sighed in relief. "And this green tea flushes away the greasiness of the fat they used for the cooking. This is such bliss."

"Prii!" Togepi chirped happily on the table, being careful not to touch the hot plate.

Brock unfolded a map that was part of his Johto guidebook and checked something. "Hey, guys. We've got a small situation here."

"What is it, Brock?" Ash asked after he wiped his mouth clean.

"There are actually two cities in west and east that have a Gym; Olivine City and Mahogany Town", Brock explained as he pointed at two marks on the map. "The traveling distance is equally the same from Ecruteak City, so we should make a decision where we'll go first."

"Can I check the map real quick, Brock?" I spoke up.

"Sure."

Brock handed me the map and I held it up and far away from the hot plate, even though it was turned off. I looked at the side of the map to see the list of where the Gyms were located. Then I searched for Mt. Silver where the Johto League was going to take place.

"I suggest we head to west first", I said. "Our final destination is Mt. Silver which is located in east. So we should challenge the Olivine and the Cianwood Gyms first and then challenge the last two Gyms in Mahogany Town and Blackthorn City in the east. And when we're done with them, we can travel straight to Mt. Silver."

"That sounds like the best choice", Ash commented. "If we head to east first and then west, it'll be a huge traveling distance to Mt. Silver which might take days even with the flying taxi."

Misty peeked over my shoulder to check the map with Togepi in her arms. "And the best time to travel across the sea is in summer", she pointed out. "It'll feel cold in the middle of autumn and that's something I don't enjoy, even though I love the ocean."

"Then it sounds like we've made a unanimous decision", Brock smiled before I gave him the guidebook back. "We'll stock up on food and supplies today and leave for Olivine City tomorrow."

"Umm… Can't we visit the Kimono Sisters' dance theater first?" I asked, feeling a little shy when I remembered Naoko. "I'm a little curious about their theater."

"The Kimono Sisters!" Brock exclaimed, his eyes getting full of hearts. "I can't wait to see their performance! Let's go see them right away!"

"That sounds great!" Misty agreed. "I'd love to see them dance and their beautiful kimonos!"

"I'm in for a little sightseeing", Ash nodded. "Maybe those sisters will perform a story about Ecruteak City's towers."

We paid for our food and left the restaurant. Ash walked out first and accidently bumped into somebody. "Ow! Sorry, sir!" my brother swiftly apologized after he stepped back.

"It's okay, young man", an oddly familiar voice spoke up. "Wait a second… I recognize you four!"

I blinked my eyes as I checked the man. I had only seen him once, but I still remembered his name. "Bill?" I asked.

"Oui, that's me", Bill smiled. "And you are Ash, Ashley, Misty and Brock, right?"

"Yes. It's been a long time, Bill", Brock nodded.

"How've you been, sir?" Misty wondered.

"I've been doing great", Bill replied with a big smile. "My research's coming along, but I'm far from done."

A woman dressed in a light pink kimono with blue ribbon and heart pattern and long black flowing hair stood next to the researcher. She raised her right arm and hid her mouth with the long sleeve of her kimono. "Dear brother, who are these children?" she asked with a soft voice.

"I met them last year when they came to the lighthouse to stay a night, Valerie", Bill replied, smiling at the woman.

Brock cleared his throat. "E-Excuse me, Bill, but…who is this lovely geisha?" he asked, a bright blush painted on his face.

Bill chuckled before he turned to the woman. "Everyone, this is my little sister, Valerie. She used to be a Kimono Sister."

"Nice to meet you", Valerie smiled.

A fourth Pokémon peeked out from behind Valerie. It was white and pink with some blue accents and looked like a feline, pretty similar to the Eeveelutions. "Sylve?"

"What's that Pokémon behind you, Valerie?" Misty wondered.

"Togi?"

"This is my partner Sylveon", Valerie giggled softly. "She's an evolution of Eevee."

"I've never seen that Pokémon before", Misty commented.

"Fairy-type Pokémon aren't so common in other regions except for Kalos", Bill explained.

"Fairy-type?" Ash repeated confusedly.

"This is my first time hearing about it", I commented. I may have read a lot about Pokémon, but I had never found books in Professor Oak's laboratory that mentioned this foreign type.

"There's been very little research about fairy-type Pokémon in other regions including Johto and Kanto", Bill explained. "Some actually believe that the Togepi family line is fairy-type."

"The Togepi family line?" Misty repeated and looked down at Togepi with surprised eyes. "Does this make Togepi…special?"

"Yes", Valerie smiled before she crouched down to Togepi's eye level. "Togi, togipi togitogi."

"Togipriii!" Togepi chirped happily while talking to Valerie.

"Umm… What is she doing?" Ash asked a little awkwardly.

"Pi-Pika…", Pikachu sweat dropped.

"Valerie has the ability to communicate with fairy-type Pokémon", Bill explained. "She can speak in that Pokémon's language, just like how she speaks to Togepi."

"Veoon!" Sylveon smiled.

"Wow…", I mumbled in awe. "Being able to talk to Pokémon and understand them like the human language… I want to achieve that with my Pokémon."

Bill chuckled softly before he got the expression of a light bulb idea. "Tell me, kids, where are you heading to?"

"Oh, we were actually on our way to the Kimono Sisters' dance theater", Brock replied.

"What a coincidence! We were heading to the theater too", Bill said as Valerie stepped back from Togepi after she had finished talking to the baby Pokémon. "We can show you the way to the theater."

"Thanks a lot! That'll be a big help!" Ash thanked with a big smile.

The building of the dance theater was much larger than I had expected. It wasn't huge but big enough to host dozens of visitors. The building was decorated with lanterns in all kinds of colors. None of them were on because it was in the middle of the day. A sign stood next to the front door telling visitors the theater was currently on a break, meaning there were no shows.

Bill and Valerie casually opened the unlocked doors and stepped inside with Sylveon running ahead. We followed the siblings and closed the door behind us when a woman dressed in casual clothes walked out from a room.

"I'm sorry, but we're closed", the woman called out.

"We know, miss", Bill replied. "We're here to visit the Kimono Sisters."

"Oh, I'm terribly sorry. Most of the Kimono Sisters are on break and have left Ecruteak City", the woman answered. "I'm afraid only Kimono Sister Miki is here."

"So Miki is here…", Valerie mumbled with a soft voice.

"May we see her?" Bill asked.

"Of course. Let me show you the way."

We followed the woman who led us through a corridor before we were suddenly outside in a garden with a small river flowing through. A geisha dressed in a fiery colored kimono was dancing around on the grass with a Flareon doing flips in the air around her. The geisha held a fan that had the same fire pattern as her kimono, making her look like she was on fire. It was a beautiful sight. I never knew dancing could be so lovely.

"Sister Miki! You have visitors", the woman called.

The geisha and her Flareon stopped dancing to the silent music and turned around to face us. Her face was covered in makeup, but I could still tell she was around Valerie's age. She told us she turned twenty-six this year, so she was still in her glory days. For some odd reason, Brock never attempted to flirt with Valerie, probably because her big brother was by her side protecting her.

Miki gasped in delight when she saw the adult siblings and walked fast toward them. "Valerie!"

"Reoon!" Flareon barked and rushed straight to Sylveon. The two Pokémon meowed before they rubbed each other's heads while purring in delight.

"Miki, it's been such a long time", Valerie smiled softly.

"It certainly has been, Valerie", Miki smiled with a pink blush on her cheeks and turned to Bill. "You too, Bill. My sisters have been missing you both."

"It's a delight to be back at the theater", Bill smiled before he turned to us. "These are our friends. They wanted to visit the dance theater."

"Hi there", Ash smiled. "I'm Ash and this is my partner Pikachu."

"Pi pikachu!" Pikachu waved his hand from my brother's shoulder.

"I'm Ashley, his twin sister", I bowed softly.

"My name's Misty and this little baby is Togepi", Misty smiled at her Pokémon.

"Togi togiprii!"

Brock inhaled deeply in the form of a gasp and rushed straight to Miki and got down on one knee. "And my name is Brock, former Gym Leader of the Pewter Gym! I must say; you are a stunning woman, dancing around like you have complete control over fire!"

"Umm…", Miki looked a little confused by Brock's actions.

Misty growled and walked to Brock before she grabbed him by the ear and pulled him away from the confused geisha. "Cool it down before you get burned, Brock!"

"Owowow!" Brock yelped as he got dragged away.

Ash and I laughed sheepishly at the scene before we returned our attention at the adults. "We've actually met two of your sisters, Miki", my brother spoke up.

"You have?" Miki asked.

"Yes", I nodded. "Zuki and…Naoko…" My heart beat a little faster, like I was hoping to see and talk to her, even though I knew she wasn't here.

"Oh, yes, now I remember", Miki smiled. "They've informed me they found two Trainers with the heart of gold and the soul of silver. Zuki said she gave the Pokémon Egg to the Trainer with soul of silver."

"That's me", I raised my hand. "It hatched into a Togepi and he's now a Togetic."

"That's wonderful news", Miki clasped her hands.

"I see you're still doing the Pokémon Egg tradition", Valerie giggled behind her kimono sleeve.

"Tradition?" Ash and I repeated confusedly.

"I shall explain everything to you", Miki smiled. "Let's have some tea, shall we?"

"I'll gladly help you with the tea ceremony, my dear sister", Valerie smiled.

The few available staff of the theater set up a small picnic blanket and a parasol in the garden where we settled down for the tea ceremony. Miki and Valerie stirred the green tea in traditional tea cups and passed them to us. Even the way they used the little bamboo whisk was very elegant.

"Before you drink the tea, you must turn the cup around thrice in your hands", Miki explained. "It is part of the custom."

I gently turned my cup three times before I silently sipped the tea. Its bitter taste was a little stronger than the green tea I had at the restaurant. I held back a grimace as I sipped my tea little by little.

"Did you used to work here, Valerie?" Misty asked.

"Why yes, I have", Valerie chuckled. "Bill and my mother used to be a Kimono Sister before she married our father who was born in Kalos."

"That explains your accent, Bill", Brock commented.

"Yes, and I studied in Lumiose University for many years before I returned to Kanto for my research", Bill nodded.

"Did you get introduced to the theater through your mother, Valerie?" Misty wondered.

"Yes. She thought it would be a good experience for me to practice as a maiko", Valerie replied while she gently brushed Sylveon who lied on the blanket next to her. "I met Miki, Kuni and Sayo who were also maiko at the time. Each one of us received an Eevee as it was part of our training. I had to quit because our family moved to Kalos for Bill's studies."

"We stayed in touch through letters, so we told each other when me, Sayo and Kuni became the next Kimono Sisters", Miki explained. "And we were thrilled when we heard Valerie's Eevee evolved into Sylveon and how she became a Gym Leader."

I nearly choked on my tea, but I quickly coughed to clear my throat. Ash pounded my back as I wiped the saliva and tea from my mouth with a napkin. "G-Gym Leader?" I repeated.

"Is that true?" Ash asked, now gently rubbing my back.

Valerie giggled behind her sleeve. "Yes. I recently became the new Gym Leader of the Laverre Gym in Kalos", she explained.

"Let me guess; you're specializing in fairy-type Pokémon?" Brock asked.

"Yes", Valerie nodded.

"But is it okay for you to be away from the Gym right now?" Ash wondered.

"Pika pika."

"My other job is designing clothes since I own a boutique, so I requested a short time of leave to get inspiration for my next collection", the fairy-type Gym Leader explained.

"You're a designer?!" Misty exclaimed happily, a bright gleam in her eyes. "C-Can I perhaps ask you to design a kimono for me?"

"It would be a delight", Valerie giggled behind her kimono sleeve.

"A Gym Leader and a designer… That's amazing", I commented softly.

"Valerie may focus on female clothing, but she loves making clothes for me and our father", Bill chuckled as he adjusted his tie bow. "In fact, she made this suit for this occasion."

"It's a beautiful craftsmanship", Brock commented as he checked the suit. "The fingers of a woman can truly cast magic on their handiwork."

"So, Valerie…", Ash began. "If Ashley and I come to Kalos and your Gym, will you accept our challenge?"

"Certainly", Valerie smiled. "I'll welcome you to my Gym anytime."

"Thank you, Valerie", I nodded softly to her.

All of the sudden, I felt something soft rub against my body along with a purr. I glanced down and blinked in surprise when I saw it was an Eevee. "An Eevee?" I said confusedly.

"Veee!" Eevee purred happily as her big brown eyes stared at me. I could tell it was a female because the tip of her tail had a soft rounded pattern compared to the males.

"Oh, this is one of the Eevees we breed here", Miki explained as Eevee climbed onto my lap and curled into a ball. "It's one of our traditions to reward the maikos with an Eevee after they pass a special test. Valerie and I too received our Eevees and they've now evolved into Flareon and Sylveon."

"I see…", I mumbled as I gently brushed Eevee's fur, giggling at how soft the fur was. "I had an Eevee and evolved it into a Jolteon a long time ago."

"Sayo would be joyful hearing somebody else have a Jolteon", Miki giggled.

"Flaar!" Flareon barked.

"If I may ask, when will the theater open again?" Misty wondered while Togepi and Pikachu interacted with Eevee.

"We will open the theater in July", Miki replied. "So if you'll ever return to Ecruteak City, you may visit us and watch our performance. Morty always visits us, which Kuni always look forward to."

I held back the question that was on the tip of my tongue. Did this mean that Kuni liked Morty? Like she was his fan like how I was Lance's fan? Or… Was it something else?

"That reminds me", Bill spoke up. "Have you two challenged the Ecruteak Gym yet, Ash and Ashley?"

"Yep! We did it yesterday and today", Ash replied. "We got our Fog Badges and now we're gonna head to Olivine City for the next Gym!"

"So you'll be going west from here", Miki smiled. "You might be back in time when we open the theater if you decide to travel to the east to challenge the other Gyms."

"We'll definitely come and visit you again!" Brock raised his hand. "Watching a show with the Kimono Sisters is going to be magical!"

An explosion suddenly erupted in the garden, dirt being thrown around us, ruining the picnic blanket. Even the parasol blew away by the force of the sudden explosion. We swiftly jumped up on our feet, ready to jump in if we had to defend ourselves. I had grabbed Eevee and held her close to my chest to protect her.

"Who dares intruding in such a barbaric way of this prestigious theater?!" Miki shouted angrily, a totally different demeanor compared to her calm one.

The dust was gone revealing three familiar figures standing several meters in front of us, except Jessie was dressed in a hot pink kimono with lots of red hearts mixed with the Team Rocket logo. She even held a red paper umbrella that she swirled around in her hands.

"Prepare for trouble, sorry for barging in, but we feel hurt you didn't invite us to your tea ceremony!"

"Double trouble, so don't mind us disturbing the harmony!"

"Meowth, we're just a bunch of loony!"

"Wooobbuffeeet!" the blue Pokémon came out from Jessie's Poké Ball without getting called out.

"Team Rocket!" my friends and I yelled at the bad guys.

"Team Rocket?" Miki repeated confusedly.

"They're from an evil organization in Kanto that steal people's Pokémon!" Misty explained.

"They're also the ones responsible for occupying Saffron City last year!" Bill added.

"We've come in peace this time, though", James wagged his finger.

"We'll leave quietly if you fulfill two conditions!" Meowth said.

"What kind of conditions?" Ash growled as none of us lowered our guard.

"First, you have to let me perform on the stage as a certified Kimono Sister", Jessie said as she danced around with the paper umbrella, the sleeves of her kimono flying around not as elegantly as Miki's did. "And second, give all of your Pokémon to us."

"Of course we won't agree on your conditions!" Misty shouted as she held Togepi close to her.

"We're not that stupid we'll fall for your trap!" Brock shouted.

"And your dance is not as elegant as Miki's, Jessie", I added, feeling courageous to speak my mind out.

"Vee!" Eevee barked from my arms.

"How dare you look down on my dance?!" Jessie exploded before she ripped her kimono off, revealing her usual Team Rocket uniform. She threw the kimono to the side before she threw a Poké Ball next. "Then we'll take your Pokémon with force! Arbok, I choose you!"

"Shaaaar!" Arbok hissed when he was released.

"Victreebel, I choose you!" James yelled and threw his Poké Ball.

"Yiaaah!" Victreebel shrieked before it turned around and actually hit James on his head, almost swallowing him.

"Stop it, Victreebel!" James screamed from inside his Pokémon.

"Pikachu, let's deal with Team Rocket!" Ash shouted.

"Pika!" Pikachu nodded. He was about to run toward Team Rocket when Valerie, Miki and their Eeveelutions stepped in front of him.

"We will deal with the rude intruders ourselves", Miki said determinedly as she opened her fan.

"I cannot allow such people ruin the dance theater's reputation", Valerie spoke calmly before she hid her mouth with the sleeve of her kimono. "Sylveon syl syl sylveon on."

"Sylve!" Sylveon nodded, understanding what its Trainer said and rushed toward Team Rocket alongside Flareon.

"Arbok, use Poison Sting on that cute Pokémon!" Jessie shouted.

"Shaaaar!" Arbok fired a shower of poisonous barbs from its mouth, heading toward Sylveon.

"Flareon, block it with Flamethrower!" Miki yelled.

"FlareOOON!" Flareon howled as it breathed fire toward the barbs. The barbs were blocked by the strong Flamethrower as Sylveon kept running toward the snake Pokémon.

"Sylveon, use Quick Attack", Valerie spoke calmly.

"Veoon!" Sylveon increased its speed and rammed itself into Arbok, throwing it back and away from us.

James managed to get Victreebel off him and threw his Pokémon at the Eeveelutions. "Victreebel, use Stun Spore!"

"Yiaaah!" Victreebel shrieked before it released a puff of yellow pollen from its mouth, threatening to paralyze Sylveon and Flareon.

"Sylveon, blow it back with Fairy Wind", Valerie said, her voice still calm despite we were in trouble.

"Sylveeon!" Sylveon waved its ribbons summoning shiny particles and fanned them toward the Stun Spore cloud. The Fairy Wind move blew the yellow pollen back at Victreebel and some even reached Team Rocket. They shrieked as their bodies got stiff and they were unable to move, except for Arbok who managed to dodge the Stun Spore. Victreebel got unaffected because Stun Spore couldn't paralyze grass-type Pokémon.

"Noo! So unfair!" Jessie screamed. "Arbok, use Glare!"

"Shaaar!" Arbok hissed and made its eyes glow in yellow, glaring at the two Eeveelutions. The eyes released an electric shockwave, heading toward Valerie and Miki's Pokémon. The two Pokémon jumped to the side, dodging the paralyzing move.

"Sylveon, use Disarming Voice", Valerie called.

"Sylveoooooon!" Sylveon began shrieking loudly and released a beam of pink hearts from its mouth. The hearts struck Arbok and pushed it back onto Team Rocket who screamed in panic when the snake fell on top of them.

"Flareon, use Fire Blast on Victreebel!" Miki shouted.

"Flareooon!" Flareon breathed fire in the shape of the kanji sign of big, sending the huge flame at the grass Pokémon Victreebel shrieked in panic before it got engulfed by the fire. It screamed as its body got scorched by the Fire Blast. It let out a puff of smoke from its mouth before it collapsed on the ground.

"Victreebel!" James yelled worriedly from the pile.

"Sylveon, use Quick Attack on Victreebel", Valerie said.

Sylveon shrieked as it dashed toward Victreebel and tackled it so hard it flew up to the sky. It then crashed onto the pile of Team Rocket, leaving them in one place for us to clean up the mess.

"Leave the last part to me!" Ash shouted. "Pikachu, use Thunderbolt!"

"Pika!" Pikachu nodded and jumped up from my brother's shoulder with his cheeks sparkling. Flareon and Sylveon jumped back to give Pikachu space to unleash his attack. "Pika…CHUUU!"

The lightning bolt zoomed straight at Team Rocket and electrocuted both the humans and Pokémon before the strength of the attack caused an explosion. The bodies of Team Rocket and their Pokémon were thrown up into the air and far away in the blue sky, their cries echoing until we could no longer hear them.

"LOOKS LIKE TEAM ROCKET'S BLASTING OFF AGAIN!"

The garden became a mess thanks to Team Rocket. We helped the staff to clean it up and even Miki and Flareon joined in even though the staff tried convincing the Kimono Sister that she shouldn't dirty herself. She argued that it was part of her responsibility to take good care of the entire theater and that included the garden.

The sun was by the horizon, settling down for the day, when we prepared ourselves to go back to the Pokémon Center for the night. Bill and Valerie chose to stay over the night at the theater and catch up with Miki.

"I cannot thank you enough for helping us out", Miki bowed to us. "Thank you so much."

"Flar!" Flareon barked happily.

"It was no problem", Ash smiled. "I'm glad we were able to help you."

"Pika pika!" Pikachu smiled widely.

"The tea ceremony may have been short, but the tea was delicious", Misty smiled.

"Togi togi!" Togepi chirped with a smile.

"We will definitely come back for one of your shows when the theater opens", Brock promised.

"I'll look forward to it", Miki giggled behind the sleeve of her kimono.

"Misty, I will design a kimono for you and I shall have it delivered to the address you told me", Valerie promised.

"Thank you very much, Valerie!" Misty smiled so widely that she literally lit up.

"Shall I design one for you as well, Ashley?" Valerie asked.

"Umm…", I hesitated. I didn't feel like I wanted to receive something I haven't paid for or even done some favor. "No thank you. If I'll visit Kalos and come to your boutique, I want to buy a dress there with money."

"I will respect your wishes", Valerie smiled. "I shall await you and your brother's arrival."

"Veoon!" Sylveon meowed.

Bill carried the young Eevee that had cuddled with me in his arms, gently brushing her fur. "I hope you'll win the badges you need for the Johto League, twins."

"We'll get them for sure!" Ash exclaimed determinedly. "And I'm gonna win the Johto League!"

"Or me, Ash", I elbowed my twin brother on his side.

"We'll see about that, Ashley", Ash smirked.

"Vee eevee eee!" Eevee yelped before she jumped out of Bill's arms toward me. I quickly caught her before she could accidently hurt herself.

"Eevee? What's wrong?" I asked.

"Eevee eevee ee!" Eevee barked at me, her tail wagging eagerly.

Miki giggled behind her sleeve. "I believe Eevee wants to go with you, Trainer with the soul of silver."

I glanced at Eevee's big bright eyes, seeing she was very excited to be with me. "Are you sure, Miki? Don't you breed Eevees for the maiko training here?"

"I will make an exception with you", Miki replied. "If you promise you will take good care of her."

"I will", I nodded and gently hugged Eevee. "When we come back to Ecruteak City, I'll let you check her and determine if she's good with me or not."

"Are you sure it's just that or do you want Ashley to become a maiko?" Misty asked.

I flinched in pure horror when I heard that. "I can never become an elegant geisha like Valerie or the Kimono Sisters!" I insisted. "I'm a tomboy!"

"So was Zuki when she was your age and she turned out to become an elegant geisha", Miki pointed out. "If you ever feel the desire to practice here, you are always welcome here."

"I'll…think about it", I replied with a sweat drop before I turned my attention at Eevee. "Welcome to the family, Eevee."

"Vee!"

After receiving Eevee's Poké Ball, we walked back to the Pokémon Center where I contacted Professor Oak. I chose to send Trica to the laboratory so Eevee could join the party. I decided not to nickname Eevee just yet. I wanted to wait and see what Eeveelution she wanted to evolve into and then give her a name just like what I did with Volt.

I couldn't wait to see what she was going to evolve into.
