Chapter 4
"The fingerprints that I found on the envelopes are Marie's, the mailman's, and the landlord's. No surprise there. The letters are a little different," Alex told J'onn. The Martian gave her a look.
"There were other prints on the letters?" He was confused.
"Marie's – no surprise. The second set belongs to former DEO agent and current L Corp employee, Agent Todd Smith," Alex said. That made J'onn shake his head.
"What would his prints be doing on the letters?" He asked.
"I have no idea. I thought Marie was thoroughly undercover here for the Amazons. The only people who knew about her were in this Tower and, of course, Diana," the redhead admitted.
"Go see if Lena can make Agent Smith available. We need to know what he knows," J'onn said.
"On it," Alex grabbed her coat and headed for the elevator. She was exiting the elevator only to find her sister and Nyssa coming back into the building.
"Where are you going?" Kara asked.
"Hinky stuff on the letters. I'm heading to talk to Lena. J'onn can explain more. You?" Alex wanted to know.
"Possible cipher material," the blonde told her.
"Excellent. I'll keep you posted," with that Alex left the building and hailed a cab.
"Hinky stuff on the letters. What is going on with this Marie?" Nyssa asked as they walked into the elevator.
"I wish I knew. The more we find out, the more I worry," Kara admitted as the elevator door closed and they headed up. Nyssa nodded. It was quite possible that Marie had bitten off more than she could chew.
"You see your sister?" J'onn asked they exited the elevator.
"She mentioned hinky stuff on the letters?" Kara gave him a look.
"Seems that Marie had help. Agent Smith, formerly of the DEO, had his fingerprints on the letters. I'm guessing he's the one who was mailing them, knowing that someone would be checking your mail. Why he didn't come directly to me though… I don't know," the Martian said.
"Well, we found what we believe to be a key to a cipher," Nyssa handed him the papers they found in Marie's apartment. J'onn looked at them.
"Let's hope so. I'll fire up Brainy's code cracker program," he said.
"Have you heard from him?" Kara wanted to know.
"Not yet but I imagine he's a little left-brained at the moment," J'onn figured. Kara nodded. Their focus shifted to the elevator as the doors opened.
"Kara!" It was Nia, she had left work and headed directly for the Tower. The two ladies hugged.
"Glad you're here. I'll bring you up to speed while Nyssa and J'onn try to figure out the cipher we just found," Kara told her. The two walked away so that the other two could focus on their task.
"Lena, thanks for seeing me," Alex smiled at the dark-haired woman.
"Of course, Alex. What is going on?" Lena was immediately concerned.
"I need to see Agent Todd Smith. We've got a situation and he's right in the middle of it," the redhead explained. Lena was surprised, but she picked up her desk phone and called down to the L Corp Security Branch. Alex could tell that the call wasn't going as her friend had hoped.
"Well, that's disconcerting," Lena said when she hung up.
"What's going on?" Alex wanted to know.
"He didn't show up today for work. A no call, no show. That's not like him," Lena told her.
"I need to borrow some agents. We have to get to his apartment," the former head of the DEO said.
