Chapter 7
The group decided to split duties. Nyssa was going to meet Kelly at Obsidian North. While Kelly did not work there anymore, she still had friends there. The current college student had been hopeful on the phone that she could get her former coworkers to open up about Marie and her recent behavior.
Kara and Nia headed down to the waterfront – both secretly hoping that the body wasn't one of the people they were looking for. They did not have a lot of connections at NCPD anymore as Kara and Nia but Supergirl or Dreamer showing up to a murder would be odd. Upon exiting the cab, the two made their way over to the crime scene tape but made a point of not making themselves known. Slipping into the storage warehouse that faced the street, the two women quickly headed toward the roof.
"What can you see?" Nia asked.
"They're fishing a body out of the water. Looks like what they call a floater," Kara said.
"If it was Agent Smith, would he be floating yet?" Nia gave her a look.
"No, but that means it could be…" Kara didn't want to say it. Instead, she focused on trying to get a better look at the corpse.
"It's male and definitely not Agent Smith," she finally confirmed after a few minutes.
"Doesn't seem odd for a floater at this time of year?" Nia wanted to know.
"Not exactly boating season, but the weather is still holding, this early in fall, so I suppose someone could have had an accident," Kara shrugged.
"Uh huh," Nia wasn't so sure.
"Come on. Let's get back to the Tower," her friend said. They carefully made their way back down inside the warehouse and then back out onto the street. Hailing a cab, they made their way back to base, hoping that someone else had had a more fruitful search.
"I wonder what happened to her but someone said she was on vacation," Mallory Pendergast told Kelly and Nyssa. She was another mechanical engineer working at Obsidian North alongside Marie.
"Marie… take a vacation…" Kelly lifted an eyebrow.
"Yeah, I thought it was weird too. She has a hard time putting down her work long enough for lunch but burnout in this industry is real. Besides, she had been saying how much she'd been missing her sister," Mallory admitted.
"Hey Kelly!" Matthew Linger walked into the lab. He was a computer software engineer and had helped Kelly with the programming of her VR system adjustments.
"Hey Matt! We were just asking Mallory about Marie. We've been unable to get in touch with her," the college student told him.
"You know, Ajit told me she'd asked for vacation. She didn't tell you?" He was surprised. That was apparently the story going around. Ajit was the engineer's boss and he was next on their list.
"Well, that's the concerning part. She didn't and her landlord called me about her mail," Kelly said.
"Oh boy…" Mallory was starting to get upset.
"She might have forgotten about telling the post office to hold her mail. Most of the stuff I get through the mail is junk now anyway. My wife asked me if I had stopped the mail before we went to my folks in Gotham last year and I had almost forgot," Matthew admitted.
"Could be. I appreciate you guys trying to help me out. Where can I find Ajit?" Kelly asked.
"I saw him in his office about ten minutes ago," Matthew told them.
"Thanks. It was good to see you all," Kelly smiled.
"We're getting drinks on Friday. You want to come?" Mallory asked.
"Text me," Kelly told her.
"Bring Alex and Nyssa. We'll party it up. Well as much as we do," Matthew winked at her and Kelly chuckled.
"Talk to you soon," with that Kelly and Nyssa left the room.
"You believe them?" Kelly asked. She did but she wasn't exactly impartial - she knew them. The former leader of the League of Assassins had been watching their body language.
"I do. Let's see if Ajit is as trustworthy," Nyssa said.
