I was deep in a good ass dream when my ringtone started blaring. I roll over and see it's 6 in the morning. I pick up my phone and just roll my eyes at the screen.
Bella: You better be fucking dying Jacob!
Jake: Wake up dude! It's the first day of spring break. We have the bikes to finish. The gang is already waiting for you.
Bella: What the hell, do none of you know what it means to sleep in? School is out. Go take a nap.
Jake: Bels wake up before I come and drag you out of bed. I want to finish the bikes before the bonfire this weekend.
Bella: Fine fine, give me an hour or 2 and I'll be there.
Only agreeing because I knew he meant it. I throw my phone back down on the bed and get up to go shower. Hopefully that will wake me up a bit. I'm not surprised to see Charlie up and in uniform when I come down. Having his morning cup of coffee.
Charlie: Let me guess, Jake called?
Bella: Yeah, apparently, they don't sleep on the Res.
He chuckles and pours me a cup while I get some bread to toast. He goes to put on his belt and gun when I shout out to him, "want me to come home early and make dinner?"
Charlie: We can get something at the diner if you don't want to cut your time short with the guys.
I stare at him like he's crazy. "You're my way out of this father. I must come home early because I have to make dinner for my father after he works all day protecting the people. Then I get to sleep."
He chuckles and is about to walk out the door before he yells back. "Ok then kid, let them know I said you have to come home early to make dinner."
I stare at him through the window. Life has really done a number on him. You can see the grays in his hair and beard. The bags under his eyes. But protecting me and this town is what keeps him going. I finish my toast and send a 'on my way' text to Jake before jumping in my car. My beautiful 1972 Stingray convertible. Yes, she's a little rusty and sounds horrible if you push her past 40 mph but she's my baby. I've been saving up to start rebuilding her. She's had a hard life. She's also the first car me and Jake worked on together. We got her for free from Leah's dad. He tows cars around town and the Res. Sometimes gets calls from Port Angeles. Sometimes he picks up cars that are crap and he takes them down to the scarp yard. He had my baby sitting outside his house for weeks. Said she was a classic and he couldn't chop her up. One day he just told us if we could fix her up, we could have her. Growing up, Charlie taught us all he knew about cars, bikes, boats, just anything with a motor. With Billy's tools and finding parts at the scrap yard, we got her working in a couple of months. Jake is more about bikes, so I took the car. She could use better engine, a few new parts here and there, definitely a new paint job. But she's still my baby. I know the road to the Res like the back of my hand. I'm sure I could drive down with my eyes closed. I wouldn't of course. Cop dad and all. I pull up to Jake's house figuring the gang is in the garage, I pull around back as close as I can. I should really suggest making a walk away back here.
"Bella!" They all yell together excitingly. I just chuckle before going to pull the wrench out of Jake's hand. He looks at me like I lost my mind. "Hey, you wanted me here. And I'm here to work."
Quil, Jared, Leah and Seth all laugh at Jake's annoyed.
"Yea Jacob, let the genus work." Sam says with a tone that gets under my skin. I just roll my eyes at him. Swear if it wasn't for Leah, I wouldn't be within 10 feet of him. And I'm sure the others feel the same. I turn back to Jake, and I see him shake his head no. Last time I told Sam off, Leah didn't come around us for almost a week. I don't know what Leah sees in him. But she's like a sister and I promised I wouldn't break his jaw if he doesn't break her heart. No matter how much he deserves it. We spent most of the morning working on the bikes that Leah's dad had gave us. Someone dropped off 5 bikes they no longer wanted. We figured we could fix them up and ride them around the Res. Not long after lunch, Billy comes and tells Sam it's time to go.
Sam: "Alright children, I will play with you guys later. Us adults must go do adult stuff." He bends down and kisses Leah before heading to the front. I roll my eyes at him, and Jake tells him to "fuck off".
Bella: Leah, seriously, what do you see in that idiot?
Leah: Its love Bella. One day you'll understand.
I roll my eyes at her and go back to work.
"So where are they going?" I ask Jake after a couple of minutes.
Jake: Sam's apart of the council now. He's great great grandson of one of the last wolves. And since he's of age now, he gets to join council.
Bella: "So when you become of age and grow another foot, you'll be a part of it too?" I say and duck as he throws a handful of chips my way.
Jake: Yeah, and you will too.
Bella: I doubt it. First, I'm a girl and second, I don't live on the Res. No matter who my great great grandfather was.
Leah: who knows, maybe you'll be the one to turn into a wolf again.
Bella: haha… Don't they have council meetings once a month? It was 2 weeks ago. Is there an emergency?
I hate not living on the Res and being in the know.
"Something like that. My dad just said they had a situation come up. I'll see what he says tonight." Luckily for me, Jake keeps me in the know.
Around 6, I start cleaning up and give out the goodbyes. Promise to be back tomorrow to hopefully finish one more bike. If we do one a day, we'll have them done by the bonfire. Driving back to town is taking longer than driving down. I send Charlie a text to meet me at the diner. The idea of cooking makes my hands hurt even more. As I pull up to the diner, I notice a car that definitely does not belong here. The shiny BMW is worth 4x my house. I wait for a minute to see if I know the owner of the car. I don't wait for long; he comes out of the corner store. He's stunning. Probably the most beautiful face I've ever seen. He looks like a God. About 5'9 with short, smooth blonde hair. He looks quite fit. His facial features are just perfect. And he has some beautiful light brown eyes. If I was straight, I would be drooling. He turns and sees me staring. I just sit there and wave like an idiot. He smiles and waves back. I stare at the BMW as it drives away. After a second, I get off and go inside to look for Charlie.
"I see you've seen Dr. Cullen." He says as I sit down. "I ordered your regular."
"Thanks dad. So, the god is a doctor?" I say and he snorts a laugh.
Charlie: "You sound like the ladies at the station. I thought you batted for the other team?" He raises an eyebrow at me. "But yes, he is a doctor. He just moved here with his family. His wife and 5 kids."
Bella: Well father, to answer your question I do swing for the other team. But I can still admire a god. 5 kids? Jesus, I mean I don't blame Mrs. Cullen.
Charlie: Bella… Filter please.
Bella: Yes chief.
He smirks at my comment but continues with his food. We chit chat a little while we eat our food. He tells me about his day, and I tell him about the Res. He's not a big fan of Sam either and calls him an idiot here and there. After dinner I follow him home. Yelling "good night" as I rush upstairs to shower and get to sleep. Knowing I'll be woken up again at 6. I thought I would knock out as soon as I hit the bed. Unfortunately, sleep doesn't come to me easily. I end up staying up till 1 in the morning. And having 2 nightmares before my alarm goes off. I send Jake a text that I'm up and will head down after breakfast. Breakfast with Charlie is always silent. I'm not a morning person so a quiet morning is the best way to keep me from killing anyone. It's beautiful sunny day and I'm sure I can convince the gang to go down to the beach after we work on the bikes awhile. I park and walk around back. I'm happy to see Sam isn't there. Ahhh the peace and quiet will continue.
Bella: Hey my peeps.
Everyone says hey back and we get to work. Leah looks kind of down and I consider asking her what's wrong, but I figure it's just because Sam's not around. Don't want a speak of the devil moment so I just keep working and talking sports with the guys. It's hard not to notice her checking her phone every 5 minutes. After lunch I ask the gang if they want to go down to the beach. Lucky me they agree that it'll be a nice break. I hope the beach can take her mind off him. But it doesn't. I decide to just pull the trigger and ask. If he shows up, at least it'll make her happy.
Leah: He normally comes over after the meetings. But he didn't last night. Didn't call or text me either. I've called and text him, but he still hasn't replied. I'm getting worried but don't want to be that kind of girlfriend who is up her boyfriend's ass because he hasn't texted or called. You know with him being older, I get scared that I might annoy him with my childish ways. He makes comments at times about the guys when we hang out. I just don't want him to see me that way. I don't know what to do Bella.
I look at Leah like she lost her mind. She's always been so confident. We grew up tormenting Jake and the guys. To see her so insecure and just ugh, a love-struck little girl. I swallow the comments that I know will start a fight with one of my best friends. Instead, I run my hand through my hair, a nervous tick I picked up from Charlie, and try hard to come up with some encouraging words.
Bella: I get it Leah, why not give him the rest of the day. Maybe the meeting ran late, and he was just tired. Probably still asleep right now. I can give you a ride to his house when I leave, I mean if you want.
She hugs me tight and agrees to the ride. I'm sure the fact that I'm showing some support for their relationship makes her happy. We continue walking along the beach. Talking about random things while the boys "play" football. After a while we just sit down and talk shit whenever one of the misses the ball. I won't lie, some of my best days are just hanging out here on the Res with the guys. Spending the day in the garage or down at the beach. Charlie is normally always working late, so there's no rush to get home. If I'm not home by the time he gets there, he just calls someone down here to make sure I'm here. Honestly surprised he hasn't put a tracker on me. We sit down and watch the sun set over the water. I swear on my life there's no more beautiful sight. The ocean breezes. And scent. When we get up to head back to Jake's house, I ask Leah if Sam's hit her back. She hangs her head and says no. I tell her to get in the car so we can over to his house. We drive over in silence. Deep down I'm just hoping he doesn't have another girl at his house. I'm not trying to be in between some relationship drama tonight. But at the same time hoping he is so I can finally sock him in the face. His truck is there when we arrive. I say a little prayer as she gets out.
Bella: I'll wait for your signal before I leave.
Leah: Bella, you don't have to, he's here.
"I'll just wait awhile." I don't think she hears me as she steps out the car. She rings the bell and we both just wait. After what feels like forever, her dad opens the door and I'm sure she's just as surprised as me. He walks out, closing the door behind him. It looks like they're arguing but I'm not close enough to hear. He goes back inside, and I see my friend break down in tears. I hop out the car and pull her into my arms, telling her it's going to be ok. I walk her back to the car and head to her house. It takes us 10 minutes to get to her house and I just let her get it all out. I don't say anything but reach out my hand to hold hers. Wait for her to calm down and talk to me if she wants.
Leah: My dad said he doesn't want to talk to me. That he needs time to think. I don't know what I did wrong Bella.
I hear the crack in her voice. I don't know what to do besides hold her hand.
Bella: Just give him some time Leah. Things will be ok. He didn't call off the wedding so things will be good.
She gets out the car without another word. My heart breaks for her and I just want to punch Sam's face in. I drive home and hope she gets some sleep. Before going to bed, I send her a text.
Bella: I know it hurts but if he's smart, he'll get it together. Try to sleep. He'll show up at your door and beg for forgiveness. Love you!
I roll over in bed and try to get some sleep. Yet once again, sleep doesn't find me till the early morning. This isn't new. I've had a hard time sleeping since my mom passed away.
