"Come on Gumbo, is that all you've got?" Logan impatiently tapped his finger against his folded arms that lay across his chest as he continued to watch the young mutant through the big window overlooking the danger room below.
Wiping the sweat and dirt off his forehead Remy gave a quick glare up from his position crouched down on the dirt covered ground before jumping out of the way just as an exploding car came crashing down on his previous hiding spot.
"Is dat how you treat all your guests?!" He cautiously looked behind the building he was now using as a shield just as another explosion could be heard nearby.
"You're not a guest anymore kid. You're a student and I'm your teacher so get to learnin'." Logan spoke into the intercom with a smug smile, enjoying this a little too much.
"Learnin' huh?" Remy grumbled rolling his eyes before jumping behind another car. "Pretty sure dis ain't a lesson teach, more like tryina kill me."
"Logan is all this really necessary?" Ororo glanced between Hank, Logan, and the professor. "He is still healing after all."
"Come on Storm a few cuts and scrapes never killed anyone. This will do the guy some good. Besides it's his fault for going places he shouldn't."
"So what? Is this some kind of punishment?" she huffed, staring at him in disbelief.
"Course not." Logan hummed trying to keep his smile to himself.
"Ororo's right." The professor's voice cut in, however his eyes remained glued to the young mutant who continued to dodge and fight off the larger robots in the Danger room. "Regardless of him finding out about what we do here, I believe there are better ways of dealing with this Logan."
"Trust me I know what I'm doing." Logan briefly looked back at them from over his shoulder. "Besides this is for educational purposes."
"Which is?" The professor raised an intrigued brow.
"Well, didn't you say that one of his mutations is to heal?" He looked towards Hank to reconfirm what he had told them after his findings.
"Erm actually it's not quite that simple." He removed his glasses to give them a thorough cleaning as he frowned. "Unlike your healing factor Logan, Mr. LeBeau's mutation runs more in line with taking any potential energy in an object and being able to convert it into kinetic energy thus charging it as you can see." He gestured out into the Danger room when Remy pulled out a few playing cards before charging them and throwing them towards one of the robots before using his bo staff to jump and flip over another. "It's quite remarkable really." Hank admitted. "He's able to use this power to tap into his body's own kinetic energy thus allowing himself to heal and recover at a faster rate than normal."
"Which would explain why he's wound is almost completely healed." The professor watches Hank nod.
"But unlike Logans healing power which allows him to heal instantly as well age at a slower rate, our student does not. Not to mention all his reflexes, speed, strength, flexibility, agility, and endurance to name a few all are all as a result of tapping into his own energy."
"So, all of his acrobatic fighting style out there is part of his mutant power?" Logan frowned.
"Correct, among other things since I believe he's learned quite a bit for his age when it comes to hand to hand combat. Although one must wonder if his mutation does have any other side effects we don't know about. Or if there are any other powers we have yet to learn about from our dear Mr. LeBeau." Hank explained.
"See told you this wasn't a waste of time." Logan slapped Hank's shoulder as Hank quizzically frowned when he looked out the screen.
"He does seem to be mouthing something I'm not quite familiar with…" Hank slightly parted his mouth trying to figure out what the young mutant was trying to say as he glared up at Logan. "Seems to refer to someone's mother perhaps?"
"Remy." Ororo slowly shook her head already knowing what's to come. "Logan-"
"You know what I'll be back." Logans narrowed his eyes and before anyone could say anything else he was slamming the door shut behind him.
"Did I say something wrong?" Hank looked between Ororo and the professor who both tried to take a deep calm breath.
"Can't believe this." Ororo mumbled as she returned her attention back to the window.
"Logan did say this was educational." The professor gave a small secretive smile knowing that this was good for the Wolverine just as much as it was for Gambit.
"And you honestly believe that?"
"Well, I believe the correct term is to study his physical strength and weaknesses along with what his mutation is as well as his control over it."
"Hank…" Ororo raised a pointed brow.
Clearing his throat Hank McCoy slowly cringed. "Or as Logan put it…Run him through the ringer."
"I knew it…" Ororo firmly shook her head.
"You think this is a game, Gambit?" Logan walked through all the debris and broken buildings that Remy now sat on top of breathing heavily, while all the remaining robots lay in pieces around them.
"Won didn't I?" he gave a small smirk that didn't quiet reach his eyes as he warily watched the other man studying his work. "Unless you wanna take me on dat is."
"Alright." Cracking his neck Logan couldn't help but feel the adrenaline begin to pump through his veins at the thought of finally teaching this punk a lesson. "Let's see what you got."
As soon as those words left Logans mouth he saw him using his bo staff to boost himself of the building with the faint glow of red and purple before dodging his adamantium claws he had at the ready and throwing a charged card in his direction.
Remy was momentarily surprised when Logan did manage to dodge it right before lunging at him.
"We should stop this." Ororo continued to watch on hoping no one got hurt but she knew that would be asking too much from either.
"Ororo I'm sure everything's fi-"
"Stop hopping around like a damn bunny and get your ass down here!" Logan snarled as he made another go for him.
"What so you can kill me? Non, t'ink I like it up here." He pounded his staff against another building letting his powers seep through the entire thing before it began to come down on a furious Wolverine.
"Oh hell." Logan growled as he began trying to dodge all of it. "I'm going to kill you you little shit!"
"I'd like to see you try." Remy narrowed his eyes waiting to see what the other man had up his sleeve since he knew Logan wouldn't easily be stopped.
"You were saying?" Ororo gave the professor a pointed look.
"Ahem…" Hank cleared his throat. "As much as I hate to say this…I believe this is beneficial as much for us as it is for them."
"How do you figure that?"
"Well, it allows us to try and fully understand Mr. LeBeau's limits since he doesn't seem like he trusts us enough to tell us everything just yet."
"And what's the other?"
"Well, I believe that both require some type of outlet for their anger, and it seems to me that whether Logan wants to admit it or not he seems to understand that Mr. LeBeau is more than capable of fighting back."
"Hmm." Never having given much thought or noticed, Ororo turned to glance back down and her eyes widened at the damages that had occurred only a few seconds ago. But what didn't go unnoticed as well was the fact that if you looked closer you could see a small smile on Logans face as he prepared for another attack. "Never thought of it that way."
"The only other person he usually likes to train with is our young Rogue, and even then, he sometimes tries to hold back given that he is rather fond of her. But…"
"With Remy he knows he can take it therefore he doesn't feel the need to hold back." Ororo finished with an understanding nod. "Don't let Rogue fool you either, she's strong."
"I don't believe Logan means it that way. If he didn't believe she was capable then he wouldn't agree to train with her."
"Have you talked to Gambit about the possibility of telling the others?" The professor turns to her. "They will be working alongside him after all, and teammates need to trust each other."
"I have." she admitted. "He's still adamant about the fact that he won't stick around here long enough."
"Perhaps that is true. Although it would make it quite difficult without knowing the details of how he came to be here in the first place." The professor gave her an amusing smile.
"He'll come around." She only hoped her voice sounded as sure since Remy made it a habit to not linger in any place longer than he had to so this probably wouldn't be any different for him. "But I agree. If the others are going to work with him then it's only fair they know. Now the only thing is convincing him of it."
"That my dear would be easier said than done." Hank hummed as they continued their observation from above.
Down below Remy quietly listened for any movements nearby, with his left hand firmly gripping his metal bo staff and his right holding a charged card. He had lost sight of the man after he managed to jump out of the way from a car he had charged near him.
With any new noise he whipped his head around expecting him to try and take him by surprise. Spinning his staff in one hand in a warming maneuver, he grinned when he heard Logan running up from his right. Without hesitation his threw his card straight into his chest making the burly man get thrown against a broken pile of bricks.
"Didn't anyone ever tell you not to scream while attackin' mon ami?" He chuckled but it was only short lived when he saw Logan already up on his feet and barely managed to duck a second before his claws swiped against the giant boulder behind him. "Missed."
"You sure about that?" Logan breathlessly smirked when the top half of the boulder came crashing downs on Remy's shoulder and smacking him in the back of the head.
Grunting and grabbing the back of his throbbing head he quickly rolled away, and without a second's pause used his legs and staff to knock Logans legs out from right under him catching him off guard. Hovering the end of his metal staff where a crystal-like ball glowed a dangerous red purple light only a centimeter from Logans face, Remy triumphantly grinned down at the other man. "Just to make this official, Bang! You dead."
Squinting his eyes open he could see Remy's proud grin fade away when Logan menacingly grinned in return.
"Oh shit." Remy knew that look; he remembered that look all too clearly realizing this was just a warmup for the Wolverine.
"Welcome to the Danger Room bub."
-X-
Grunting in pain and clutching his sides, he barely managed to make out of that place and was surprised to see Rogue already standing right outside the sliding doors with a raised brow.
"So, you're not dead yet?"
"Non…?" He shook his head in confusion knowing he wasn't but sure as hell felt like it. Everything hurt from his toes all the way to his head. He could already feel a few bruises forming and the few cuts and scrapes he had received from the man didn't help. His hair was plastered to his face in sweat and dirt while his clothes had seen better days, but other than that he took comfort in knowing he was at least in one piece for now. That was until he glared down at the staff in his hand now missing the crystal ball marking it the second time Logan had managed to ruin one of his precious weapons.
Giving him an impressive once over she shrugged her shoulders before continuing on her way down the hall. "That's a shame."
"Hey wait!" He painfully winced when he attempted to jog and catch up to her to only grip his sides harder. "What's dat s'pose to mean?"
"Nothin' just means he let you live for now." She casually said, taking satisfaction when he hissed in pain and looked back over his shoulder to where he had just left the Danger Room.
"Is dat right? Doesn't seem like dat to me." Returning his attention back to her he could see her dressed in a pair of black workout shorts and a white shirt with her hair pulled up in a ponytail clearly having just left the gym. He couldn't help his eyes from lingering on how form fitting those shorts looked until she abruptly stooped, and he made sure to let his eyes snap back up with a sly grin. "Aw Chere were you waitin' on me?"
Patiently inhaling she looked down the hall where she could see Kitty, Bobby and Piotr exiting the gym they were all in. "Only to see Logans handy work."
"No faith in dis one huh?" He couldn't help but chuckle when she turned those emeralds back on him, giving him a pointed look when she let her eyes look at his rough appearance. "Maybe I was de one takin' it easy on him."
"Uh-huh." She gave a disbelieving smile and continued to open the door to the locker room but stopped when she saw him make no attempt to stop from following her. "Where are you goin?"
Raising a questioning brow, he let his eyes follow the sign she was tapping with her finger that clearly indicated the girl's locker room. "Wherever you are of course." His voice lowered in a seductive way that made her eyes narrow regardless of the blush creeping up on her cheeks and the slight shiver running down her body. "Could be fun…"
"Ah don't think so Swamp Rat." She firmly shook her head walking inside the room but not before shooting him a disbelieving glare. "You need a shower."
"What 'bout after?" Smiling to himself he watched her disappear before he made his way to do just that as well as heading to the infirmary as Hank had instructed. The wound on his shoulder was almost pretty much healed but couldn't say for certain if he received new ones after his session with Logan.
-X-
For the next few days Rogue found herself trying her best to avoid him while being completely glued to every news article there was about the mutant cure and the many people that began showing more and more signs of them returning. Anytime someone even accidentally was close to brushing up against her skin she would find herself flinching but instantly find relief in the fact that nothing happened.
Still, she found herself glancing at the familiar gloves she always detested wearing and a painful reminder of what could occur if her powers were to ever return. Maybe she could have Hank look into it for her, but then she'd run the risk of having everyone be afraid of her again. It wasn't like Hank wouldn't know how to keep a secret, but this was a school after all, and things were always bound to come out sooner or later.
Chewing on her bottom lip she aimlessly continued to walk down the mansion halls after classes until she saw Storm talking with one of the students from her class.
"Ms. Munroe?"
"Yes Rogue?" Ororo smiled warmly at her before nodding to the student she was talking to. "Don't worry Lorna will figure something out for your class." She confidently reassured the girl knowing who she would have to ask for a favor.
"Thank you, Ms. Munroe." Lorna timidly smiled before doing the same to Rogue and heading off.
"What is it Rogue? Are your classes going ok?" Ororo worriedly asked as she walked down the hall with the brunette.
"Oh yes everything's fine." Rogue quickly responded, now feeling guilty about worrying her teacher over nothing.
Sensing her uneasiness Ororo watched the girl nervously play with the sleeve of her shirt and decided to patiently wait until she was ready to talk.
After passing by a few more students Rogue deeply inhaled mustering her courage to ask the question she's had on her mind lately. "Ms. Munroe?"
"Yes?"
"Ah don't know how to say this or even ask but…"
"Rogue, you know you can always ask me anything." Ororo gently grabbed her by the elbow to stop them. "Is everything alright?"
Pressing her lips together she just decided she might as well just get it out since Storm seemed to be the right person to ask. "It's about Gambit."
"Remy?" Shooting her brows up in surprise Ororo carefully continue to listen as they continued walking. "What about him?"
"You've known him for a while, right?"
"I have." Ororo smiled while fondly nodding.
"So, you're close?" She wanted to reconfirm remembering little bits and pieces of information she had overheard from her sources Aka Kitty and Jubilee while the two continued to gossip about mundane things in her opinion and she pretended to work on her schoolwork.
"We are.'
"Has he always been so…?" Glancing around she tried to keep her voice down while trying to find the best word to describe him without offending one of Ororo's close friends. "Persistent?"
"Oh." Rapidly blinking, Ororo's bewilderment began to show in her expression without meaning to, which made Rogue suddenly want to backpaddle.
"You know what nevermind-"
"No, it's quite alright Rogue." Ororo quickly linked her arm with hers ushering them onwards. "You just caught me by surprise is all. So, if you don't mind me asking, what brought that on?"
"It's just…he's always around." She felt her shoulders relax at the comforting gesture.
"Around?"
"Yes. And anytime we're in classes together he goes out of his way to bother me. And when we're not in class he does his best to constantly show up and and…"
"And?" Raising an amused brow, she waited for the brunette to find the right words unaware of the blush on her cheeks.
"He always makes these rude remarks and comments that just make me feel…" Shaking her head she looked sideways at a quiet Storm. "They always make it seem like he's…"
"Flirting?"
"I would hardly call that flirting." Rogue quickly averted her eyes. Even with the cure she still considered herself the untouchable girl…the girl everyone feared to get close to and yes, she still had the view who didn't mind being around her but to her…that name always stuck. "That's definitely not it. I've seen him flirt with anythin' wearin' a skirt around here." She mumbled and bit her lip when she realized who she was talking to.
"Well Remy has always had a way with people." Ororo admitted with a slight chuckle which caught Rogues' attention. "To draw people's attention to him even if he didn't want it to, including me."
Quizzically giving her teacher a sidelong glance, Rogue continued to follow along to what she had to say.
Choosing her words carefully, Ororo thought back to the day she first stumbled upon the boy in question so many years ago. Back when she was younger, she could easily admit she was infatuated with him just like so many others had been but knew that he always loved her like a little sister which eventually became mutual. "He has a way about him that just makes you feel at ease and safe. And regardless of what people may think he does have a good heart."
"Seems to me his too big for his own britches…' she mumbled watching as the same boy talked to a couple of girls down the hall by one of the classrooms, unaware of Ororo's growing smile at what she'd said before Rogues eyes widened and she swiftly turned to her. "Um what I meant to say was-"
"It's fine Rogue." Ororo gave a small chuckle. "And yes, I won't lie to you. He has certain aspects to him that tend to draw females to him as well. So, I wouldn't worry about it."
"Oh Ah'm not." Rogue stubbornly shook her head. "He could do whatever he wants for all ah care."
"If you want, I could talk to him." Ororo offered a sympathetic smile.
"No it's fine." She placed a strand of white hair behind her ear. "Ah just don't like him."
Unable to keep the small laughter from bubbling out, Ororo nodded in understanding remember why Rogue was one of her favorite students in this place. "Logan talked to you."
"Yeah, but he didn't he have to." She quickly shook her head. "He's rude, overly confident, always has somethin' to say, and has the ego of Mount Everest. Ah don't like him one bit. And ah swear if ah have to see his face one more time-"
"Aw you talkin' 'bout me Chere? I'm touched." He placed a hand on his chest as he walked up with Kitty next to him.
"Believe it or not Swamp rat not everything's about you." She gave an icy glare in return hoping he didn't overhear their whole conversation.
"It's not?" he tilted his head with a teasing smile.
"We're on our way to continue working on the security sensors for outside if you want to come with?" Kitty asked as she proudly hugged her laptop.
"Think I'll pass." Rogue smiled at her friend before resuming her glare at Remy and stomping off.
"Dat be one angry femme." Whistling Remy watched her walk down the hall and stop to talk to Bobby who emerged from the Rec Room. He was about to turn to face Ororo when he saw Bobby smiling down at Rogue before grabbing her hand and turning the corner.
"Alright so we're off." Kitty turned on her heel but when she saw him still standing by Storm she gave the teacher a quizzical look.
"Remy?" Turning her gaze down the hall then back again, Ororo saw the frown on his face before he expertly masked it behind a confident smile.
"Best be off den Stormy." He nodded before turning to follow Kitty.
"Remy? Kitty?" she called after them. "The professor wants to talk to Remy and I. Could you also let the others know there's a meeting scheduled later?"
"Ok…" Kitty suspiciously nodded a the two.
"Everythin' alright?" he cautiously asked once he was sure it was just the two of them.
"Of course." Ororo forced a small smile.
"You know one thing you were never good at Stormy was lie." He teasingly smiled and wiggled his brows.
"Rogue." She could visibly see his smile slightly falter as he averted his gaze.
"What 'bout her?"
"Well, it's come to my attention that you might be intrigued with our Rogue." She mused out loud as he began following her up the stairs.
"She say dat now?" he rubbed his lip as he looked down at his feet. "Saw you two talkin'. Makes a fellow wonder what you two may be talkin' 'bout."
Giggling Ororo shook her head. "Remy, Rogue and I talk all the time. And even if Rogue was talking about you-"
"So she was?" he gave one of his rare boyish hopeful grins that made her blink back at him.
"No Remy she didn't. But even if she did would you by any chance know what it would be about?"
Placing his hand in his pocket he gave a nonchalant shrug. "You know me, Stormy."
"Yes, I do." she pointedly said receiving an unamused glance from him. "Just do me a favor and be careful. Rogue's very dear to me and I wouldn't want anyone to get hurt."
"Woah now it ain't like dat at all." He stopped right in front of the door. "Now I know de fille has it out for me dat's no secret."
"And you?"
Scoffing, he parted his mouth to respond but found himself unsure on how to answer. So, falling back to his carefree smile he only hallway shrugged. "You know me Stormy. See a pretty face an' just can't help myself is all, nothin' more to it."
"Yeah, well for your sake I hope not." She secretly smiled knowing someone else who wouldn't be too happy. "Which brings me as to why we're here. The professor would like to discuss something."
She said before hearing the professor's voice behind the door.
"Come in."
"Because dat's not creepy at all." He pointed his thump to the door behind him.
-X-
Exiting the elevators Rogue and Jubilee found their way down the lower levels heading towards the conference room when they saw Remy walking from the opposite direction.
"Oh no, not you." Rogue groaned when she saw him give a curt wave of his hand as they passed him by.
"Bonjour." He quickly walked backwards to catch up to them with a playful smile.
"Hey Gambit." Jubilee happily greeted when she saw him wedge himself between the two. "Watcha doing here?"
"I believe I just had my last meetin' with the doc." He said glancing down at the smaller girl before looking at the annoyed white streaked girl. "I did miss havin' my nurse at my side."
"Well, I'll make sure to tell her that." Rogue rolled her eyes and the doors to the conference room couldn't seem further away.
"But on de bright side, I'm all healed." He smiled suggestively when she abruptly stopped to face him. "Meanin' you can knock dis one around as much as you want."
"I'll be sure to keep that in mind." She narrowed her eyes before continuing on her pace.
'Where you off to?"
"None of your-"
"Meeting." Jubilee casualty answered shrugging her shoulders questioningly when Rogue stared at her. "What?"
"Den lead the way." He gestured with his hand.
Bitterly laughing Rogue shook her head. "You're not seriously-"
Ororo suddenly stepped out of the room looking both left then right before her eyes stopped at the three of them. "Remy you're here. The rest of come on we're starting."
Pressing her lips together Rogue tried holding in her scream when she saw his overly smug smirk gesturing for her to enter first.
"Ladies first."
Lowly growling she did just that and made it a point to move over to the seat Bobby held out for her.
"Thank you all for coming on such short notice." The professor began to wheel himself to the front of the room with Storm and Remy. "I know some of you have a rather busy schedule. But this is important."
"Professor what's this all about?" Kitty was the first to ask as she leaned forward in her seat.
"Well…" Storm clasped her hands together looking towards Remy whose face was unreadable as he made his way to lean against the wall with every intention of keeping himself busy. He had agreed to this but didn't mean he wanted to answer any questions nor have to explain anything to another set of people he barely knew.
"It's about Remy and where he's from." Ororo began to explain.
"You mean Louisiana?" Bobby frowned just as lost as the others.
"Um no…." Ororo forced a small smile trying to figure out how to properly begin telling them the truth without sounding too blunt.
"He's a time traveler." Logan huffed, taking enjoyment out of multiple jaws hitting the floor all at once as he placed a cigar onto his smug lips. "What?"
