Chapter 116: Thomas Gets Spooked
It was Halloween once more on the Island of Sodor. While the children went trick or treating, the engine drivers of The North Western Railway gathered in the common house to share ghost stories. Everyone agreed that Edward told the best ones.
"And every Halloween, the ghost rides again, searching for a poor soul to take his place. So if you work in The Smelters yard tonight, you better watch your back. Or he may just get you."
Everyone shivered in fear.
"Great story, Edward!"
"That may be your best one yet."
"It was way better than James's story about Phantom Tar Wagons."
"Hey, I worked hard on that story."
"Uh huh. Suuuuuuuuuure."
"Silence."
Everyone turned to see Sir Topham Hatt standing there.
"Thomas, Duck, and Percy, I need all three of you to go to the Smelters Yard. Some scrap needs to be collected before tomorrow. Don't worry, you should be able to make it back in time for the fireworks."
"Yes sir," Thomas and Duck replied, but Percy was still shook up.
"Wh-What if the ghost gets us? I'm to young to die!"
Thomas rolled his eyes.
"Oh, come on Percy. Its just a story. Don't tell me you actually believe that story."
"Don't be rude, Thomas. Percy is entitled to believe whatever he likes."
"Whatever. I'll meet you guys there."
Thomas drove his engine out in a huff, with Percy and Duck lagging behind.
"Don't mind him, Percy. You know how skeptical he is."
"Its alright Duck. Thanks for standing up for me. Besides, all I need to do to get back at him is to crash into a lime cart."
They both shared a good laugh before leaving.
All three spent the next hour shunting trucks of scrap, but Percy was still on edge. All he could think about was Edward's ghost story. Thomas saw a chance for some fun.
"Look over there, Percy, is that a spook?"
"Its just a piece of scrap. Isn't it?"
Thomas continued to tease Percy throughout the night.
"Look out Percy, or you'll become a ghost yourself."
"C-cut it out, Thomas."
Duck had lost his patience.
"Thomas, leave Percy alone. You don't like it when he teases you, so why should you tease him?"
"Oh, come off it, Duck. I'm just having some fun."
Just then, the foreman came up to them.
"You've all done well. I just need one of you to stay behind to finish."
Duck saw a chance to get payback.
"Thomas can stay behind. He's not scared, are you Thomas."
"Certainly not. You guys go on ahead."
And with that, Duck and Percy set off for home, leaving Thomas alone. Thomas didn't feel so brave anymore. Every sound became spookier as it echoed through the lonely yard. Thomas felt a cold chill go through his body.
"There's no such things as ghosts. There's no such things as ghosts. There's no su- Who's there?"
Without realizing, Thomas set his engine into reverse. The engine passed through some rusty old chains, brushing against Thomas's arm. To Thomas, they felt like Ghostly fingers trying to trap him.
"No such thing as ghosts. No such thing as ghosts."
Thomas accidentally hit the steam valve, causing the engine to wheesh and set off an old steam whistle.
WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSH!
"Somebody help me, the ghost is after me! I gotta get out of here!"
And before anyone could stop him, Thomas rocketed out of the shed, screaming in fear.
At Wellsworth, Duck and Percy were waiting for the fireworks to start.
"It was wrong of Thomas to tease you. Are you alright."
"I'm fine, Duck. I just needed to calm down. But where is he? He'll miss the fireworks if he doesn't hurry."
'ITS AFTER MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"
Before either of them could say another word, Thomas rushed past them. He didn't look at Duck, he didn't look at Percy, he just kept going.
"I don't think he'll be late."
But Percy was concerned about his friend, and decided to go after him.
He found Thomas at the common house, still shaking.
"Thomas, its me Percy. Are you alright?"
Thomas calmed down when he saw his friend.
"Yeah, I'm alright. I just got spooked in the Smelters Yard. I'm sorry I teased you."
"Its alright, Thomas. Hey look, the fireworks are starting."
They both looked out to see beautiful fireworks shooting up into the sky, bursting into brilliant colors. They both agreed it was the perfect end to a Halloween night.
