Chapter 132: Happy Ever After
There was an air of excitement hanging over Thomas's branchline. Mrs. Kyndley's daughter, Mary, was getting married on Saturday and all the engine drivers on the branchline were helping in some way. Percy was helping decorate the church, Thomas would bring the Bridal party, and Toby would bring the Groom's party. But Daisy felt left out.
"What's there for me to do?"
"Don't worry," Toby said kindly, "I'm sure Mrs. Kyndley can find something for you to do if you ask her."
But Mrs. Kyndley couldn't, no matter how hard she tried. This made Daisy rather upset.
On Thursday morning, Daisy was driving his Rail car to Ffarquhar when she saw Mrs. Kyndley waving a red flag.
"Oh dear, something must be wrong."
Daisy gently braked to a stop as Mrs. Kyndley approached her.
"Is something wrong?"
"I hate to bother you, but I have forgotten the Good Luck Package for the party."
"What's a good luck package?"
"Its something given to the bride and groom of a wedding to wish them luck. Its supposed to contain something old, something new. Something borrowed, and something blue. I've forgotten about it entirely, and now I don't have time."
Daisy thought for a minute. Then, an idea crept into her head.
"I can get one ready. I'll have to ask for permission from Sir Topham Hatt, but I'm sure he'll agree."
"Oh, thank you Daisy. You are really useful."
Sir Topham Hatt did agree, and Daisy set off to find the good luck package.
"Something old, something new. Something borrowed, something blue. Where am I going to find any of that?"
Her first stop was Knapford Harbor. There she found a new set of shiny buffers on a flatbed.
"Those will do perfectly. Excuse me, harbormaster, may I have those buffers?"
And she explained all about the wedding.
"Sure, I don't know why not. In fact, you can borrow the flatbed too, so that's two out of the four things that you need."
"Excellent, thank you very much."
She next stopped at the beach. Bulstrode was there, grumbling as kids messed around in his beached barge. Even after all this time, he was still as grumpy as ever.
"Rotten kids, always making noise."
Daisy smiled.
"Something old, I've got it! Excuse me, Bulstrode!"
"What do you want? Can't you see I'm busy ignoring you?"
"I was wondering if I could borrow your barge, its…"
"Yeah, sure, whatever. You can keep it as far as I'm concerned. Not like its going back in the water any time soon."
"Uh, okay. Thanks."
It took a while to bet in on her flatbed. First, she had to pull it closer with strong chains. Next, she used a crane to gently lower it onto the flatbed right behind the buffers. It was hard work, but at long last they were ready to go.
Daisy drove down the line, looking everywhere for something blue, but nothing came to mind.
"Something blue, something blue, something…ah-ha!"
There, on the side of the Ffarquhar station platform, was a box of violets. David the Stationmaster was tending to them.
"Oh, hello Daisy. I thought I'd bring some flowers from my garden at home to liven up the station. Do you like them."
"Oh yes, they're perfect. Do you mind if I take them? They're for Mary's good luck package."
"Sure, Daisy, anything to help the Kyndleys."
"Yes! Now I have everything."
After carefully bringing the box of flowers into the cab with her, Daisy made a beeline for Mrs. Kyndley's cottage. Mrs. Kyndley was waiting for her, looking most grateful.
"Oh, thank you, Daisy. You are a lifesaver. Can you keep these things safe until the wedding tomorrow? It's at 7PM sharp, don't be late."
"Don't worry, I wouldn't dare."
At 7PM the next evening, all were gathered at the Ffarquhar church for the wedding. It was a beautiful affair, and not a single eye was dry that evening.
"Do you, Mary Kyndley, take this man to be your lawfully wedded Husband?"
"I do."
"And do you, John Michael, take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?"
"I do."
"Then by the power invested in me, I now pronounce you Husband and wife. You may now kiss the bride."
Everyone cheered as the marriage became official and made their way to the station to head to the reception just then, they heard Daisy's horn as she drove in with, he good luck package. Mrs. Kyndley spoke up.
"Everyone, may I present to you the good luck package. Something old, something new. Something borrowed, and something blue, all made possible by Daisy and the Branch Line crew."
Everyone clapped and cheered, making Daisy blush. The bride and groom were so thankful that they asked Daisy to be their private engine to the reception, to which she happily agreed. Everyone had a great time, and Daisy was happy to have been really useful.
