Chapter 218: Fire Escape

Fortunately for Gordon, Sir Topham Hatt had important business on the mainland, so he managed to escape his wrath for the time being. Gordon was on edge all week, trying his best to not mess up anymore.

"The stationmaster says Sir Topham Hatt will be home this evening," James said one evening, much to Gordon's dismay. He really didn't want to see him again.

"I'll just have to have a perfect run today," he thought to himself. "Perhaps that will put him in a better mood."

But luck was not on his side. A last minute passenger delayed them out of Knapford, making him miss their path through the junction. But things got better, and with a clear run through Edward's station Gordon surged the train up Gordon's Hill.

"That's better. As long as we have no further delays, we'll make it Barrow on time."

But he had spoken too soon. Just as they got halfway up, a loud BANG rang out, making Gordon jump. Looking out the cab window, he saw air bellowing out between the boiler and cab. He found the cause soon enough. A huge, gaping hole was in his fire, where the firebars had collapsed. Most of it had already disappeared.

"I just had to say it."

Thinking fast, Gordon found the biggest piece of coal he had and placed it in front of the hole. This helped, but Gordon knew it would only be a temporary fix. Building the fire carefully, he drove the train up the hill, being careful not to waste what steam they still had left.

"Come on, old girl. You can do it."

Slowly but surely, the train crested over the top and made its way down hill. It was easier going down hill, but Gordon knew it wouldn't be long until the fire gave out. A signalman switched the train onto a goods loop, then telephoned the works for an engine to come rescue the train. While he waited, some of the passengers got out to speak to Gordon.

"Oh boy, here comes the lecture."

But much to his surprise, not to mention relief, the passengers only wanted to tell him how brave he was and thank him for getting them this far. Boco soon arrived, offering a friendly smile.

"Cheer up, Gordon. The men will fix it up before you know it."

"I know. I'm just worried what Sir Topham Hatt will have to say."

He soon found out, as he was waiting for him as Boco shunted his engine into the works. But to Gordon's surprise, he was smiling!

"I've heard all about it, and I couldn't be prouder. Once again, you have proven to be a really useful engine driver. Now, there are some other matters of discussion, but-"

Just then, the manager came up.

"I'm sorry, sir, but you're wanted on the telephone."

"Oh, bother that telephone. Never mind, Gordon, we can discuss this later."

And so, he turned on his heel and walked away, once more leaving Gordon to his own thoughts.
