Sapphire

A barren city stands before her. Flames burst upward from crumbling stone towers, and the streets are lined with ash. The sky is dark, filled with angry clouds and illuminated by flash after flash of deadly electricity.

She turns in circles, desperately scanning her surroundings for any sign of life. Suddenly, a man beckons to her from around the corner of a faraway building. She takes off running in that direction.

Turning the corner, she sees him. He now lies motionless on the ground. Heart pounding, she pulls on his shoulder, and as she rolls him over, she sees the growing puddle of blood pooling beneath him. She stumbles backwards and stares at her hands in horror, seeing them coated in the thick, sticky substance.

She backs into something solid and spins to find herself facing a mob of people, looking like ghosts come back from the dead. Eyes are hollow and haunted. Faces are cold and threatening.

It is her fault! Our lives will be protected by her sacrifice; it is the only way!

Death! By the outer world!

The ghosts come closer, backing her against the wall. Their shapes meld into an unending blackness. She screams.

Startling blue eyes shine from the darkness.

Help me!
