Friday. It was finally Friday; this has been the longest repeat week of my life. That doesn't really make sense but it kind of does as well. I am mentally, emotionally, and physically tired and was ready to have some fun and just relax for a bit.
We had talked about Isaac's situation until it got late, and we had come up with a semi executable plan to get him out. unfortunately, we couldn't execute it just yet. Mom went down to social services to put in to be a foster parent and take in emergency cases so that was pending. She didn't think she would have any issues already being a nurse and already having a child in the house. Mr. S was keeping watch for any incoming calls, we decided that was the best course of action. Just showing up out of the blue would do no good and he could sue or dispute that in court and still retain custody of him. In the meantime, Stiles and I continued to talk to Isaac in school. the tension eased a bit more and he started to openly joke with us by the end of the day. Last night I camped out close to his house to hear anything but, thankfully it had been a quiet night once Isaac got home for work. His father already drunkenly sleep so Isaac was able to just go to bed.
Stiles and I debated about going to this party but ultimately decided to go and I would just leave early to camp out close to his house again. We both thought we deserved to have a little fun and he was really excited about being in the same vicinity as Lydia in hopes of getting to talk to her. I cringed inwardly because I really hated how obsessed he was over her when she didn't give him the time of day. But I hoped that the talk I planned to have with not only her but him as well would help with that situation.
Stiles looked like he was in his element as he stood, can of soda in one hand while the other gestured wildly- I worry that he may actually hit someone, as he talked to a group of people that Danny pulled him into. He wanted me to join but I declined encouraging him to go ahead. For one, previously it felt like Stiles had only been pulled in to the popular crowd because of me and my new found abilities. I didn't want that this time around. I wanted him to be recognized for who he is, not who he is friends with. The second reason was because even though I was in better control this time around, didn't mean that the full moon didn't still affect me. Just because I could control the urges better didn't mean I still didn't feel them, and being sleep deprived and stressed about everything going on I wanted to make sure that if I needed to leave that I didn't draw too much attention. The first time around I started to feel it while dancing and not only Stiles noticed but so did a few other people. I was pretty sure that wouldn't happen this time but why risk it?
I'm not being completely antisocial. I have talked to a few people and avoided the advances of a few girls. I even accepted a cup of beer. Why not, its not like it will affect me in the least. Right now, I'm doing the important job of holding up the wall behind me. I haven't seen Allison yet and wasn't sure if she decided to come or not. But I have seen Lydia as she bounced around smiling and chatting, being the perfect hostess and I have seen Jackson as he alternated from getting blitz with his friends to trying to coerce Lydia into going to her room for a little while. I just rolled my eyes.
My phone chimed in my pocket, and I pulled it out to see a text from Deaton.
DEATON- DEREK CONTACTED ME. HE WANTS TO MEET WITH YOU.
I stared at the message curiously. I wasn't sure what that meant. Did he find her or not?
SCOTT- DID HE MENTION ANYTHING ELSE?
DEATON- NO, ONLY THAT THEY WILL BE BACK IN TOWN BY SUNDAY NIGHT.
I felt relieved. He said they, he must have found her. Thank God.
SCOTT- DO YOU MIND IF WE SET UP THE MEETING AT THE CLINIC?
I looked up and around while I waited for a response, finally seeing Allison making her way through the crowd. She spotted me and smile, giving a half wave. I smiled back as my phone chimed again.
DEATON- THAT'S FINE. KEEP IT NEUTRAL.
SCOTT- THANK YOU. SEE YOU MONDAY.
Before I could put it away it chimed again with an unrecognized number. I clicked it open immediately.
DEREK- THIS IS DEREK. I FOUND HER. WHEN CAN WE MEET?
Straight to the point I see. I chuckled shaking my head.
"Why are you hiding out here in a corner when there is a party going on?" Lydia asked, coming up to stand in front of me, hands on hips and foot tapping.
"No reason." I answered, sending a quick response.
SCOTT -IS MONDAY TOO SOON?
"Well then stop it. There's a pretty girl over there that could use a dance partner." She said, nodding her head to Allison who was awkwardly standing near a table filled with food and drinks.
DEREK- NO. WHERE?
"And you came to persuade me to be that partner." I raised a brow at her.
"Well, I told you she's been asking about you. She's really sweet and she likes you." She said.
"So, you have hinted."
SCOTT- ANIMAL CLINIC, AFTER SCHOOL. I'M GLAD YOU FOUND HER.
DEREK- SEE YOU THEN.
DEREK- THANK YOU.
I smiled at the messages and added him to my contacts before I put my phone away.
"Where's Jackson? Shouldn't you two be in a corner somewhere, groping each other?" I asked. She rolled her eyes and huffed crossing her arms.
"He's over there, socializing." She said the last word like it was dirty. I glanced in the direction where she tilted her head this time to see Jackson dancing way to close to some girl that was not Lydia, his current girlfriend. The girl in question was getting a bit handsy and he wasn't stopping her. "He's been drinking, a lot." she shrugged as if she were used to this kind of behavior, but I could scent the sadness and anger rolling off her.
"He's an asshole." I told her. "I'll make you a deal. If you go ask Stiles to dance and make a genuine effort to actually talk to him, then I will go ask Allison to dance."
She jerked back, not looking disgusted with the idea more like annoyed at it. I shrugged and went back to leaning against the wall, checking that the drywall hadn't crumbled in my absence from it.
"Ugh, fine. But you owe me." she said, pointing at me. I snorted shaking my head as she stomped off. When she approached him, its like his radar pinged her proximity and he cut off mid-sentence and turned to her. I could hear him greet her with a smile only for her to grab his arm and drag him away towards the dance area set up outside, not saying a word.
Shaking my head I searched for Allison catching a glimpse of her sitting on a stone bench in the backyard, cup in her hand as she glanced anxiously around. I moved around people and joined her, startling her with my sudden presence.
"Sorry, didn't mean to scare you." I told her, honestly.
"It's okay. I was just debating if I wanted to stay or not. I only really know one person here so I kind of feel like I stick out."
"Have you tried to talk to anyone since you've been here?"
"Here in Beacon Hills? No. But here at the party? Also no." she giggled. I chuckled.
"Not much of an extrovert?"
"Not really. We move around a lot. Don't really stay in one place past a year or two. Kind of hard to develop social skills that way." she shrugged; a bit embarrassed.
"Yeah I know what you mean. If you ask my best friend I'm socially awkward at best. Not that he's much better but he will at least try. Me, not so much." I told her nodding towards the dance floor where was… I'm not sure that could be called dancing on Stiles part but whatever it was he seemed to be having the time of his life. At least Lydia was being a trooper and sticking with him.
"Is he doing the typewriter?" she asked, brows crinkled, and head tilted. I bit my lip not to laugh as Lydia finally had enough and caught his arms, attempting to tame his wild moves.
"I'm sure that's a version of it."
Lydia glanced over at us, widening her eyes, and gesturing to the floor.
"I think she wants us to save her… or join her. not sure which." Allison said.
"I'm going with the latter. Do you want to?" I asked, offering her a hand as I stood.
"Uhm, sure. Yeah, I would like that." she agreed, blushing prettily as she let me pull her up at out to the floor. I snorted as the music suddenly changed to a slower tune. I had to give her credit; she's always been a determined little thing when she wants something to happen.
"Did she plan this?" Allison asked as I pulled her into my arms.
I had to be honest with myself. Even though I no longer wanted that kind of relationship with her, I still cherished those memories we made together. flashes of the school dance we went to, or she went to, and I showed up at even though I shouldn't have been there. I still remember the moments we shared fondly and for a second I was taken right back there when I was enjoying being close to my first love. As much as it was a relief, it was also kind of sad that she would never have those same memories.
"I am pretty sure she's playing matchmaker between us." I snickered when she groaned, her head dropping to my shoulder.
"She didn't say anything did she?"
"I'm not sure I should answer that question."
"Oh God, no. I didn't mean too… this is so embarrassing."
"No, it's okay. She meant well, I'm sure. Don't worry about it. If nothing else you have another friend now." I shrugged.
"Do you already have a girlfriend?" she asked then cringed. "Oh, that sounded so wrong. I shouldn't have asked that, ignore me and my weirdness. In fact, maybe I should just go hide in a corner somewhere."
"Allison, its okay. you're fine. It was a valid question given the situation. Technically, no, I do not have a girlfriend, but I am already interested in someone. She doesn't go to school here yet, but she will soon. I actually think you and her would get along." I said then had an idea and I don't know why I didn't think of it before. "Matter of fact I think I know someone else you would get along well with also. You sat next to him at lunch on Wednesday, my friend Isaac. He's a bit on the shy side and not used to being around a lot of people either. You two might have some things in common."
She pulled back to look at me.
"Is this a set up?" She asked, eyebrow arched. I laughed.
"No, not a set up, I promise. I just know that he could use another friend as well. if nothing else you two can commiserate on how hard socializing is."
She laughed, showing those two little dimples, and reminding me of the girl I once knew.
"Why are you doing this? I mean why are you being so nice to me after learning about…" she tampered off blushing again.
"People have crushes all the time, doesn't mean they cant get over them and become friends. I used to have a crush on this actress, Crystal Reed, and I know that if I ever meet her even if nothing comes of it I would still want to be her friend." I grinned.
"Fine, maybe." Anything else she was going to say was cut off by yelling. We both turned to see Lydia, Stiles, and Jackson in a standoff.
"What the hell do you think you are doing, Stilinski? First McCall and then you. Think you can just take my girl?" Jackson said shoving Stiles away from Lydia.
"Jackson, stop, you're drunk and you're making a scene." Lydia whisper yelled, looking around as the music stopped and people were watching.
"Whoa, dude. We were just dancing and talking. That's it." Stiles said, trying to deescalate the situation. I wanted to go over there but I didn't want to fight Stiles' battles for him. I know he can take care of himself.
"Jackson, come on man. Let it go." Danny said coming to his side to try and pull him away.
"No, I want to know what he's doing. I mean I know she's a hot piece of-." Jackson started, yanking his arm out of Danny's grasp.
"You really need to stop talking, now." Stiles said stepping up, into his space. I groaned. This would not help even if I agreed with him.
"Or what? Huh? What are yo-." He stopped mid word turning an interesting shade of green.
Knowing what was about to happen, Stiles grabbed Lydia and backed her up away from him. Then Jackson turned, fell to his knees over the pool and puked up what had to be every hope and dream he ever had for his life. The echoes of disgust rang around the backyard as everyone watched, some turning away and others with their cellphones out recording the scene. My phone rang, cutting into the sound of retching. Pulling it out I was instantly worried.
"It's my mom." I said before answering. "Hello, mom?"
"Hey Scott, I'm leaving the police station now and heading home. Noah just got a call about a disturbance at Isaac's house. You might want to get over there." She told me.
"Okay, I'm leaving now. I'll see you soon." I told her, hanging up.
"Everything okay?" Allison asked.
"Uh, not really. But it will be. Sorry to leave you like this but I will see you at school on Monday alright?"
"Yeah, sure. see you then." She said, her voice laced with concern. I gave her a smile as I rushed over to Stiles, who had Lydia positioned behind him.
"Stiles, we gotta go. that thing we were talking about, its happening now." I told him, holding up my phone. It had been part of the plan. If a call came in from that address we were taking the opportunity to get Isaac out. He nodded before turning to Lydia.
"Are you going to be okay?" he asked her. she nodded, anger painting her face.
"I'll be fine. Danny will help me with him. But thanks for getting me out of the splash zone."
"Sure, I'll see you in school." he told her, I could almost feel the giddiness rolling off him.
She nodded and then we were gone.
With the way Stiles drives it took us two minutes to get to Isaac's, not that he lived that far away from Lydia's place anyway. He cut his lights and parked behind his fathers cruiser. We both got out and climbed into the cruiser, me in the front and him in the back.
"What's going on?" I asked in way of greeting.
"Got a call about 3 minutes ago from neighbors that they heard sounds of breaking inside of the house and cries of pain, they think. I sent two of my deputies to answer the call. They are on their way now, about 2 minutes out."
"Okay, I'll go get into position. Are you staying?" I asked.
"Yeah, I want to make sure things go off without a hitch. If it does I'll meet you guys at the house. You're mom got her approval for fostering so we can bring him straight to your house after its all over."
"Okay. Stiles you want to head to my house and help my mom get the room ready?" I asked looking back. he nodded.
"Yeah I'll do that. Good luck man."
"Thanks." I said as I got out and jogged to the spot I had been in the night before, keeping an ear out for sounds within the house along with approaching cars, for the deputies. I wasn't there fifteen seconds before I felt a presence.
"What brings you out tonight Peter?" I asked, pulling on a set of rubber gloves Stiles had given me to keep on me in case we got the call, not even bothering to look back.
"Just going for a stroll, getting some fresh air. You?"
"Kind of in the middle of something right now. Did you need something?"
"Does this have anything to do with the kid in that house getting the crap beat out of him?"
I glanced at him quickly.
"How do you know about that?"
He nodded.
"Thought so. So do you have a plan or are you just doing surveillance?"
"I have a plan. But what is your plan since you are here?"
"My plan was to turn the poor kid. Make him strong enough to fight back."
"That wouldn't work. Isaac isn't like others who get bit and changed. He's been conditioned to fear for too long to make him that aggressive. He wouldn't fight back he would just run." I told him shaking my head.
"I so want to ask you how you know that, but I have a feeling you won't tell me." he sighed. I grinned at him. I listened closely and tried not to react to the sounds of Isaac freaking out in the freezer. I had to remind myself of why we were doing this and that after tonight Isaac would be safe. I would make sure of it.
"FYI, Derek's on his way back." I thought I would throw him a bone.
"He is? Did he find her?" he asked. I heard the skip in his heart as he held his breath waiting to know. Damn it, this is why it was so hard to hate him. he truly did care about his family.
"He did. He should be back by Sunday. I'm meeting with him on Monday."
"And are you going to tell him?"
Sighing I turned to him.
"I can't lie to him Peter. if I do he will never trust me and he needs to know the whole story. But I will make sure to explain why you did what you did. He will not be happy, but I really do think that he will forgive you, at some point."
"Fair enough. I will wait until after you talk to him to go to him."
"Maybe… I think that we should arrange that meeting with all of us; you, me, Derek, and Cora sometime next week. I'm meeting with him on Monday, so maybe Tuesday we can meet up and hopefully keep him from trying to kill you."
"You think he would try to kill me?" he smirked.
"If the roles were reversed, wouldn't you?" I quirked a brow at him.
"Fine. Again, I'm trusting you. what has become of me." he murmured to himself. I grinned as I heard the sound of a car getting close and then stopping.
"Good, now I need to get going."
"What is your plan?" he asked.
"I need to get into the basement. I came by yesterday and made sure one of the windows was unlocked so I can sneak in."
"What's in the basement?" he asked. I was getting nervous because I could hear the deputies knock and knew I needed to get there now.
"He has him locked in a freezer down there. I need to go."
"Okay, you get to the basement." He said as he started walking towards the back of the house.
I could hear the conversation happening between the deputies and Mr. Lahey. He was telling them that there was nobody hear but him and he must have had the TV up too loud.
"I'm going to help. now go." he said as he took off. I had no time to think about it. I creeped around to the side of the house and slowly pushed the window inward and crawled inside, dropping down silently to the ground.
"Isaac." I called quietly as I crept towards the freezer. The whimpering inside stopped, leaving only heavy breathing.
"Scott?" he called.
"Yeah, its me. Look, we are going to get you out of here okay?"
"No, you can't. he'll kill you if you try. You need to go. Please." He said, fear choking him.
"Isaac, Sshh, stop. I'll be okay. but I need you to do something."
"Scott, please." He begged.
The sound of glass breaking upstairs sounded, followed closely by more glass. What the hell was Peter doing?
"We don't have much time. I can get you out of here and make sure he never touches you again. But I need you to trust me, even if just for a little while. Please." I added when he said nothing.
"Okay." he whispered, and I sighed in relief.
"Good, I'm going to bend this a little to give you more air and so you can be heard. Then I am going to cause a lot of noise to draw the police's attention to the basement. When I say so, I need you to scream and bang on the freezer as loud as you can, okay? Just call out for help."
"Are you sure about this?"
"Yes, just be ready. When I say so scream and make as much noise as you can."
"Okay." he agreed, quietly.
"close your eyes." I instructed as I gripped the side of the lid and growled lowly as I bent the corner giving just enough of a view of Isaac in there. His blonde curls dark with sweat and his red face streaked with tears.
I could hear the deputies upstairs checking rooms as Mr. Lahey tried to say it was probably some kids throwing things and got the windows. I huffed at Peter's distraction. The shelves down here are filled with old pots and pans, boxes full of junk. I stood between two of them and shoved them hard causing them to collapse against each other. I heard the footsteps stop and Mr. Lahey stop talking. I could hear his heartbeat pick up as he realized the sound was coming from the basement.
"Sir, what's in the basement?" one of the deputies asked.
"Uh, n-n-no-nothing. Just some old junk. I think that was from the pantry. I had some stuff topped on other things. They probably just fell over." he said stumbling over his words.
I picked up a box filled with ornaments and walked to the bottom of the stairs throwing it at the door where it hit with a loud bang and fell, the contents spilling loudly over the steps. That should do it. I heard the steps of the deputies get closer.
"Okay, Isaac. Do it. Now." I told him as I raced back to the window. I made it out just as Isaac started screaming at the top of his lungs and banging on the freezer lid. I made it to the yard of the house next door where Peter was waiting. We both listened as the deputies stormed down the stairs and then one using what I could assume was the butt of his gun to break the lock freeing Isaac.
"Joseph Lahey, you are under arrest. You have the right to remain silent…"
"You're just a regular old boy scout, aren't you?" Peter asked, stepping up next to me.
"Hardly." I snorted. "But for those I care about I will do whatever I have to do to save them."
"Hmmm, you're an enigma."
I listened as more deputies showed up, including Mr. S., and turned to Peter.
"I can say the same about you. Why did you help?"
"I told you; I had planned to turn the kid. I think, of anyone, he deserved the chance to be able to fight back, even if he didn't use it. I'm not a bad guy Scott. You say you know the reasons why I was doing or planning to do what I did. I actually do care."
"I know you do. You just don't show that side of you often enough. Thanks, by the way. I could have done it alone but what you did made it much easier."
He nodded, not actually saying the words you're welcome, but it was implied. I snorted, thinking how much like him Malia actually was.
"I'm going to go. But soon I want the rest of that information you have for me."
"Soon, but not yet. We need to start the ball rolling on what we currently have going on. But I promise that soon I will tell you."
He nodded, turned, and walked away. I jogged around to the front of the house I was at, just in time to see them lead Mr. Lahey out in cuffs and another officer, female, lead a blanket covered Isaac out of the house. He was shivering, not because of the cool air but in fear. He looked up, looking around and saw me. I smiled at him as he mouthed 'thank you,' to me.
** And there we have it. A little Scott and Allison moment, Lydia and Stiles dance, Jackson's still a tool and Isaac is safe. Hope you all enjoyed his rescue. Next up Derek's return. Thanks for reading. **
