"Am I doing the right thing?" I asked Stiles as he drove down the road. It was early Saturday morning and even though we had stayed up late last night hanging out with Isaac, Stiles was still on his high after our celebratory dinner, we were still up and out at 8 am this morning. Today was going to be a full day. We had our meeting later this afternoon and, after talking to Lydia last night before we all headed back home, we planned to do her transition today as well.
But this morning we had a separate mission. I could no longer hold off on this. The original plan was to wait until at least this Kate thing was over with, but my heart and head wouldn't let me. It was time and I was more than ready. But for some reason this morning I started to doubt myself. All the 'what ifs' started running through my head and now I can't get them out. I have now turned into Stiles.
"What? You mean in looking for Malia?" he asked, glancing at me quickly then back to the road.
"Yeah. Well, no, maybe that's not the right question. I want to look for her and I want to get her home. But… okay, logically I know that I'm not going to just find her and then we have a love at first site, happily ever after moment. It didn't even happen that way before. It took a couple of years before we were even together and that's after she dated you. But I can't say that I haven't been dreaming that we would just both be attracted to each other at the same time if that makes sense."
"Wait, what? I dated her. I dated her before you?" he asked. I closed my eyes and groaned, slamming my head back against the rest.
"That was supposed to be a part of the talk we still have yet to have in regard to you and Lydia and your dating history. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to just blurt it out like that. I'm just in my head this morning." I sighed.
"Yeah, about that…" he started, nervously tapping his fingers against the wheel.
"What's going on?" I asked in concern.
"I think… I don't think I want to know what happened between Lydia and I previously." He admitted. I blinked at him, not expecting that from him at all. "It's just that I know how I will get if you tell me. If nothing did happen between us before then it will just ramp up my anxiety and I'll become more spastic trying to make it happen and if something did happen between us, then I will be hyper focused on making that happen now regardless of how long it took before. I don't know if I want to put that kind of pressure on not only her but myself as well. Maybe it's just better if things happen organically without foreknowledge of anything."
"Okay, I get that. But is that the only reason?" I asked curiously because it wasn't long ago that he was frustrated that I wouldn't tell him anything.
"No. I talked to Lydia last night. She called me after we got home. She wanted to apologize for how she acted when we saw her on Tuesday. She told me about the talk you two had when I went to call my dad." He said. I winced remembering telling her that she shouldn't be with Stiles. I didn't mean it in a bad way just that she needed time to herself.
"Sorry."
"No, it's okay. I understood what you were saying. And that's why I don't want to know. You were right, she does need time alone to not only get over Jackson but to figure out who she is and me following her around like a puppy won't help that at all. I mean I want us to be friends and maybe that's where it starts. Whether it progresses from there or not is up in the air. But I think that maybe it needs to happen in its own time. It's like the butterfly effect. What if you telling me changes the course drastically, you know."
"Yeah, I know. And if you really don't want to know then that's fine. I can keep it to myself. But if you ever change your mind, let me know." I told him understanding his point and actually happy that he came to this decision on his own.
"Oh, I'm sure I will change my mind a lot. You know how I can get. But just… keep that info locked up. I just want to focus on being her friend right now. And speaking of being friends, let's get back to this Malia thing. First, wow I can't believe I dated her. When was that?" he said getting us back on the original topic of conversation.
"Remember when I told you about your stint in Eichen? Well, that's where you guys first got together." I told him when he nodded. His brows shot up in surprise. I went back to the beginning when I first forced her change back to human and then went on to explain their relationship and how it grew and what ended it.
"Freaking Theo again. Was there anything he didn't ruin?"
"Not much but even though he did a lot of harm, in the end he did some good too. That's another story. We will talk about it later."
"Fine. So that was the girl you said I dated from junior to senior year. We broke up but was able to be friends after a while and then you dated her after we graduated until I guess this point in your double life. There was never a dull moment, was there?"
"Not many." I snorted.
"Okay, so what I was trying to say before we got off track, again, is that finding her I think is fine. She needs to be found and brought home. Why wait on that, it keeps her safer. Not just from supernatural hunters but from the other kind as well. But if you're talking about pursuing her in this reality then I get why you are conflicted. It's unfortunate or fortunate, depending on how you look at it, you have all the memories of what could be between you two and she will be coming into this with a blank slate."
"Exactly and I don't want to force something or rush things. But I don't know how I'm going to be able to handle if things don't turn out the same for us as they did before. I know that is a possibility, so much as already changed so it's not out of the question. But the thought of that…" I told him, pointing to the group of trees that lead to the crash site.
"I get it man." He said slowing to a stop. Shutting off the jeep he turned to face me. "This is going to be hard for you. There is no doubt about that. But maybe take a page out of my book. Do like I am with Lydia. For now, focus on being her friend. If something comes from that great and if not, at least you still have a friendship with her. I know the idea that, in this reality, you won't be together stings but at least you will still have her in your life, right?"
"Yeah, your right." I sigh, knowing he was but the pain of that thought was almost unbearable.
"We should get you a t-shirt that says that, just for future reference." He said opening his door. I chuckled and followed him out. "Okay so where are we headed?"
"Let's check the crash site first, she usually visits there every day." I told him as I started walking into the woods.
"Okay, and if she's not there?" he asked following me.
"Then we can see if she is at her den. If that fails, then I might have to track her as a wolf. I really don't want to do that. I would rather not force her shift if I can help it. I'm hoping I can just talk her through shifting back." We trudged through the trees before coming up to the site. It was still weird to see the car still there, overgrown with branches and such but still there, only the bodies gone. Though the personal items, doll, bag, clothing were all gone. I know they were in Malia's den but still I didn't understand why this was never removed. "Okay let's-."
I was interrupted by the ring of my phone. Pulling it out I started to worry and hit connect instantly.
"Mom? Everything okay?" I asked, as I heard growling in the background and tensed up.
"No, it's not. You need to get home now. There's a man here who's bleeding, and he said you're the only one that can help him." Mom said in a rush.
"Okay, I'm on the way. Be there in 10." I told her and hung up. "We gotta go." I told Stiles as I jogged back to the car.
"Why, what's going on?" he asked as he ran to catch up to me.
"Mom said someone showed up to the house bleeding and asking for me. I have a few guesses as to who but not sure why."
He nodded as he jumped into the driver side. I made a call as he made a u turn and his tires squealed and he peeled away, driving even more erratically then normal.
"Scott, what's up? I thought we were meeting later." Derek answered.
"Yeah, we are but I need your help. I think Peter just showed up at my house and my mom says he's bleeding."
"Text me the address, I'll meet you there." He said. I agreed and hung up immediately sending him the address.
"You think its Peter? Why?"
"Because Peter knows where I live and Derek doesn't, I just had to text him my address. Your dad or Deaton wouldn't come to me if they were bleeding and needing help because they are human. Mom would have said if it was Isaac, and she just said a man showed up not who. He's the only one I can think of."
"Okay, can't argue with that. But why would he come to you and not go to Derek or something?" Stiles asked.
"Because Derek and/or Cora are liable to just let him bleed out. Remember they still haven't forgiven him." I told him. he nodded as he sped down the road.
We got back to my house in record time. Jumping out before Stiles had completely cut off the jeep, I ran up to the house and threw open the door. And I was right. Peter was lying on my couch bleeding with a towel thrown over him, naked as the day he was born. I could smell the wolfsbane from here.
"What happened?" I asked rushing over. Mom was by his side holding another towel to him and Isaac was silently freaking out by the stairs.
"Hunters. Caught me when I was at the Hale house." Peter grunted.
"Shit." I groaned as I took over for my mom, removing the towel to see the damage. "I thought Argent would have them lie low for now."
"Scott, what's going on? who is he?" mom asked.
"I'll explain in a minute. Can you grab that little torch you use for cooking, please?" I asked her. I heard a choked gasp and looked behind me to see Isaac going paler then normal. "Stiles can you take Isaac upstairs and sit with him?"
He nodded, going to Isaac while mom rushed off to grab the torch.
"No, what's going on?" Isaac asked. "What do you need a torch for?" he asked in a shaky voice.
I didn't have time to think about how to spin this as to not either set him off or telling him something I wasn't sure he was ready for, but I didn't see another option.
"Isaac, I promise that when I am done here, I will come up and explain things to you. But for now, I need you to go with Stiles and turn some music on as loud as you can make it. Please? I promise I will explain." I said when he started to shake his head, fists clenched at his sides. finally, he gave one sharp nod and went with Stiles.
The door opened again and in walked Derek. Mom squawked at his quick appearance.
"Mom, it's okay. this is a friend. He's going to help." I told her. she nodded as she came back with the torch, Derek following her. I heard music turn on from upstairs, blasting loudly. Good, Isaac wouldn't hear this, it wasn't going to be pretty.
"What happened?" Derek asked.
"Hunters." I told him then turned back to Peter. "Is the bullet still in there?" I asked and he nodded.
"Couldn't get it out before I started to feel weak. I came straight here." he gritted out.
"Okay, we have to get that out then cleanse the wound. Mom, we need something to try to grab the bullet."
"Got it." she said running into the kitchen and coming back with a pair of mini tongues.
"Derek, help me hold him down, mom I need you to get the bullet out."
Both rushed over and Derek sat on his legs and held down his arms, I grabbed his shoulders.
"Here we go." mom said, pushing the tongues into the wound. Peter screamed trying to move, but we kept our grip, putting a bit more strength into it, both of our eyes switched. "Sorry." Mom said, wincing.
"Derek, I need to tell you." Peter said.
"Tell me later." Derek said. Even though his voice was sharp I could hear the fear and concern behind it. He cared about Peter despite what he did.
"No, you need to know." Peter gasped as my mom continue to probe for the bullet to get a grip.
"Peter, now is not the time." I told him.
"Peter?" My mom said, halting in her moves. "The one who bit you?"
"Yes. Mom, keep going." I told her.
"Oh, I hope this hurts like hell." She growled as she went back to work.
"It does." Peter grunted, his eyes going red and his claws making an appearance. "Derek, I never meant to hurt you. I-." he screamed cutting himself off. "my mind had been clouded after months spent in the hospital, paralyzed and in pain, reliving every moment of that fire, hearing every scream, every cry. Reliving every lick of fire that touched me."
"Peter-." Derek said.
"When Laura showed up, I had no plans of killing her. I was trying to talk to her, reason with her. Get her to see that we couldn't-. Damn it, please get it out." he pleaded.
"Almost got it." mom said.
"I wanted her to see we couldn't let this pass; we couldn't let her get away with what she did." he panted. Derek's jaw ticked as he listened, holding his position. "She wouldn't listen. We fought. She said that if she couldn't stop me one way, she would another." He said then cried out in pain.
"Got it." mom said, as she pulled it out and set it on a stack of gauze on the coffee table.
"Thank God." Peter said, falling back against the cushion.
"So, you killed her?" Derek asked.
"I wasn't trying to kill her. I was trying to get her to stop. I didn't want to kill her, but she kept coming." He said tiredly looking at Derek. "After she got in a few good swipes my instincts kicked in. At that point it was kill or be killed."
"Okay, I know you two have a lot to talk about, but we need to burn the wolfsbane out and clean him up." I said, grabbing the torch from the table. "Mom, you might want to back up."
She got up and backed away.
"You ready?" I asked both of them. Derek nodded.
"Do it." Peter said. I started the torch and applied it to the wound. Peter screamed, then his eyes switched, and he roared. Derek kept him as still as possible as his claws dug into the couch. When the wound started to heal, I stopped, putting it out and setting it down. I grabbed the wipes mom brought over and cleaned him up before taping him up. he would heal soon.
Derek let him go, standing and crossing his arms while staring at his uncle. Mom helped me gather the trash to throw away. She opened her mouth to say something, but I shook my head to stop her. we could talk after they were gone.
"I understand what you did but I am not ready to forgive you yet." Derek said. Peter sat up and nodded. "How are you feeling?"
"Less like death warmed over." he said. I snorted quietly while mom and I watched them from the kitchen.
"Do you have somewhere to go?"
"I have an apartment. I'll be fine."
"Do you need a ride?"
"That would be appreciated."
"Let me get you some pants. I think the neighbors would notice if you left here naked." My mother said heading for the laundry room.
"Did I hear her right? Earlier, she asked if I was the one that bit you?" Peter asked me. I sighed and nodded. "When we talked before you said that I wasn't the one that bit you."
"Technically I said I wasn't that same kid and I'm not. That kid had no clue about any of this and fumbled his way through it all because his maker bit him and left him to fend for himself. I'm not him anymore."
"So you were that kid I bit in the woods that night. How are you an alpha? That's not a normal transformation." He said and I snorted.
"There is nothing normal about any of this. You biting me didn't turn me into an alpha."
"Scott's a true alpha." Derek answered. Peter studied me nodding slowly. Mom came back with a pair of jogging pants, throwing them at him.
"What were you doing at the Hale house?" I asked as he dressed.
"I was looking for something I hid there. I didn't get a chance to check when they came out of the woods shooting. I got one but ran for it when I got hit."
"Did you kill him?" I asked.
"No, just knocked him out. I would have but then I got shot."
"Were you shifted?"
He nodded.
"Good, they didn't get a look at your face then. Not sure we would be able to plan with you in the mix if they saw you human."
"Let's go. you should get cleaned up and changed before the meeting." Derek said heading out the door.
"Thank you both, for helping me." Peter said standing with a wince. "I'll pay for the damages."
"It's the least you could do after what you did." my mother told him sharply. He nodded then followed Derek closing the door after him.
"What the hell was that, Scott? Why did he come here of all places? And was that really the one that bit you?" she asked, turning to me.
"I really wish I knew what just happened. Before, I was the last person Peter would come to for help, but I don't think he had many options. Going to a hospital wouldn't have helped him and as you can see there was some hostility between him and Derek."
"So that was Derek, the one that helped in the previous timeline?" she asked. She had finally read through the list I had put together so was as caught up as she could be on things.
"Yeah, that was him. I would apologize for how off putting he was but, honestly, that's his norm. He's a good guy though."
She nodded. I looked at the ceiling as the music cut off.
"What are you going to tell him?" mom asked, referring to Isaac. Grimacing, I thought about it.
"The truth."
"Good luck honey. I'm going to try to do… something with the couch." She said, heading to the cupboard under the sink for the cleaning supplies.
"You shouldn't bother, he will just buy us a new one." I told her as I headed towards the stairs.
When I got upstairs, I found both Isaac and Stiles in my room. Isaac curled up, arms wrapped around his legs, staring into space and Stiles pacing. I went in and closed the door partially, not wanting Isaac to feel trapped. Still, he jumped when I took a seat on the bed next to him. Stiles pulling my desk chair over, sat in front of both of us. Isaac stared at me with wide eyes.
"Are you okay?" I asked him. he was already shaking his head before I finished.
"No, I'm not. What the hell is going on Scott? Who was that guy and why was he bleeding?"
I looked at Stiles who shrugged and nodded helplessly.
"Isaac, there are some things I need to tell you."
** Side note, i have turned this into a series story instead of one. Since there are many events to happen and change decided to do a three part story. Hope you liked the chapter. **
