Okay guys, so I have an idea as to what I want to do with Jem in Remnant, I'm sure some of you will be able to catch on to what I have planned.
Anyways, so obviously AJ also has his own story to tell, but to be honest, you won't see him for awhile.
Jem was woken up early for the first time since he arrived. He completely forgot that because they were on a military base. So that meant Winter was going to be back to her usual routine of waking up early in the morning. Luckily he never slept in too late, so missing out on an extra hour of sleep wasn't a big deal.
"Morning Babe." He said as there was already a cup of coffee waiting for him.
"Morning." She said as she had already made herself breakfast and was gently sipping on her coffee.
"So you're working today?" He asked hoping she wouldn't be too busy.
"Yes, I've missed out on a lot, so unfortunately I have to do a lot of paperwork before I can get back to training." Jem winced in sympathy for her.
He could remember how each month he had to turn in a new ERB, copies of his certs, an updated PT test form, and updated car insurance forms just for some random bullshit that ended up being thrown out at the end of the day anyways. He wasn't even sure what it was all for, he just assumed they did it to mess with everyone. Don't even get him started on how many times he had to repeat SSD1. He still could remember how shitty government issue computers were.
Most people assumed the military had the best equipment because of how much money was put into military spending. But most people didn't realize more money was spent on education than on defense in the US. And every dollar sent to the DOD was used in one specific way.
Lowest bidder possible.
Anyone who said they had military grade equipment obviously had no idea what that term meant.
"So anything you need me for today?" He asked as Nala was currently eating her pancakes.
"I'm afraid not. Looks like you two have the day to yourself, although Nala I would prefer if she would stay here for now." That took Jem by surprise.
"Really? You want her here by herself?" He asked as Nala was getting excited.
"Woo hoo!" She was going to have so much fun.
"She's quite mature for her age, and I get the feeling you should venture out on your own for a bit. Nala here helps you adjust to Remnant, but I think it would be wise for you to go out by yourself, possibly make some new friends?" She said as Jem thought about it.
On one hand, Nala could take care of herself, and besides that, they were on an Atlas army base, its not like she was in great danger. He figured it couldn't hurt for him to explore Mantle a little bit more on his own. He just hoped he didn't run into Robyn Hill again.
"Okay sure. Nala sweetie, you okay being by yourself for awhile?" He asked as Nala just nodded her head vigorously.
"Well okay. I need to get going." Winter got up and brushed off her uniform trousers and walked out the door.
"Alright then." Jem checked to make sure he had everything on him.
Ruby Ridge, his wallet, his new scroll, a pocket knife, his watch, paracord bracelet. He was all set to go. As an added bonus, he had his conceal carry piece on the other side of his belt. It was kind of nice being able to carry his rifle and his pistol at the same time without it being a pain in the ass.
He put on a jacket and got ready to head out.
"Okay Nala, be good, if theres an emergency, call me." He said as she patted her own gun.
"It's okay Dad! I got this too!" She said as Jem felt a smile of pride coming on.
He was so proud that Nala knew how to handle a gun at her age. Winter may not have approved. But this was a dangerous world, so he felt justified.
"Alright sweetie, have fun." He said as he walked out the door.
And immediately Nala ran over to the fridge and started drinking chocolate sauce right out of the bottle.
"Hehe, what they don't know won't hurt them!" She said as she zoomed over to the couch and got on Winter's gaming system.
She had it as a commodity but never actually used it. But she also had a wide selection of games that came with the console itself. So Nala was looking at all the ones rated M.
"Hmmm, I think I'll go with this one!" She said as she picked out a survival horror game.
DEATH SPACE
Jem
"Huh, it feels weird not having Nala here with me." He didn't really like this feeling.
Truth was, he now understood why Winter wanted him to venture out on his own. It felt weird being a stranger in this world. And Nala really was a bit of a life jacket for him to adjust, she was more familiar with the customs of the world here. Whereas he was a foreigner. He wasn't freaking out by any means, but he certainly didn't feel as comfortable as he did yesterday.
"But overall its not bad." He said as he was just walking through the city streets.
Faunus and humans were all getting along. Everyone seemed generally friendly. He never liked cities back home, they were dens of crime and degeneracy. But here everyone seemed like normal people just trying to get along. It was crazy to think that the people in the show went crazy and started destroying their own homes out of fear. He wasn't surprised by it all, if there was anything his experience on earth had taught him, it was one simple thing.
Shit can go south pretty fast. Evil exists no matter what. And you would be a fool to trust your own safety to someone else because you never know how anyone will react in a crisis. Neighbor becomes enemy, friend becomes foe, people were so easy to control. He saw it all the time back home. So it didn't come as a surprise to him to find out this place was no different.
He was reminded of that line from Men in black.
"A person is smart, people are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it." Who would have thought a movie would have such wisdom.
As a child, he always figured adults had to be rational and knew what to do. It wasn't until he got older that he realized just how little some adults knew about the real world.
He met people who didn't realize that their food came from farms. He met people who didn't realize that being self reliant was better than being dependent on someone.
That was another thing that bothered him about the world. So many people were too willing to put their life in someone elses hand in hopes that they would have an easier life rather than taking control of their own life and accepting the possible risks of the challenges of life. There was no shame in needing help every once in a while. But there was shame in choosing to be completely dependant on someone to the point where you forgot what independance was.
But he was lost in his own thoughts.
"HEY COME BACK HERE!" He was broke out of his thoughts as he saw someone running.
Just a random guy in a hoodie carrying a purse.
Wait, he was running.
Oh shit he stole that.
So Jem did the one thing he knew how to do.
"HOLD IT!" He yelled loud enough to get the mans attention.
And the man stopped as soon as Jem drew his gun.
"OH SHIT!" The man said as he dropped the purse and ran.
...
Wait...what?
Jem was confused.
"Seriously? That was way too easy..." How did that happen?
Maybe he was just lucky.
He turned around really quick to make sure there weren't any grimm behind him just in case that was the reason the man was running.
Everyone was looking at him weird, but that was about it.
He picked up the purse and walked over to the woman who it belonged to. A young jaguar faunus woman who seemed shocked that Jem took the time to give her purse back.
"Here you go Maam." He said as she just gave him a weird look.
"What?" Did he do something wrong.
"Are you a huntsman?" She asked as he was confused.
"No." He asked as she looked confused.
"A cop?" She asked as Jem had a bad feeling.
"Oh fuck, please don't tell me she's a karen." He suddenly had a bad feeling.
"No." He said worried for her response.
But instead of the vitriolic harpy bedwetting liberal tirade he expected, he just got a very confused look.
"So you carry a gun of your own free will?" She asked as he looked around.
"Is that a crime?" He asked as Winter didn't say anything about that.
"Well no, its just that I can't imagine why a civilian would have a gun." She said as Jem deadpanned.
"Well, in this instance, to stop a mugger seems like a good reason." He said as she made a 'oh' face.
"Sorry I didn't mean to sound inquisitive." She said as she pushed her glasses up.
"You seem awfully calm considering someone just stole your purse." He said as she just waved it off.
"Oh thats just part of living in a big city." She said as Jem felt his mind break.
"Holy fucking shit, please don't tell me they're all like that douchebag Seth Rogen." He was really hoping everyone here wasn't like that.
"Er I mean, it happens so often that I've just come to expect it. I usually fill out a a police report, and the police try to track them down." She said as Jem sighed.
"Maam, while its good to talk to the police, for all you know, next time they won't try to take your purse, they'll try to take your life." Jem said as that got the woman scared.
"Oh great Jem, thats perfect, way to make friends, scare the fuck out of a woman you just met. Props." He had to find a way to save this.
"Look Maam, I'm not saying that to scare you, but its the truth, when seconds count and the police are minutes away, you'll have to defend yourself, so why not give yourself a fighting chance?" He said as she thought it over.
"Think about it, today its a mugger, but what if you had to deal with a Grimm? Sure you're not a huntsman, but a gun would at least help injure it enough for you to escape right?" He asked trying to think of a way to make it more personal.
The woman mulled it over in her head. And she nodded.
"I mean, yeah that makes sense...but..." She thought as he looked at her.
"But what?" He asked.
"I don't know anything about guns..." She said as Jem smiled.
"THANK YOU JESUS! THIS WILL MAKE SOCIALIZING SO MUCH EASIER!" What better way to bond with someone than over guns?
"Look, if theres a weapon store around here, maybe we can go get you something basic and I can give you a few pointers if theres a weapons range around here." He said as she smiled and nodded.
"Thank you, I don't really know what I would need, and I don't think I need something big." She said as Jem nodded.
"Thats cool." He said as he walked with her as she led the way.
But there were two things that were still bothering him.
"Is it just me or are most of the people I'm running into women? It's weird, like can I not get a bro here and there? I know I shouldn't be asking for a sausage fest, but I feel like I'm swimming in the estrogen ocean."
That was one.
"If Remnant is so weapon friendly, why are so many civilians not armed? I mean hell, they live in a world where danger is around every corner and everything wants to kill them, who wouldn't want to be armed when theres so many dangerous creatures?" He thought to himself.
And then he remembered Australia.
"Oh never mind."
Okay, to my readers who are aussies, you know I love you guys. But your countries gun laws really suck ass.
As for Jems want to hang around other dudes. Well, lets face it, you may have female friends, but every now and then you got to be with the boys.
Now as for the scene where Jem draws his conceal carry piece, some of you may be thinking 'What? Bullshit that was way too easy.'
Look guys I have my conceal carry license, and I've only had one incident where I MIGHT have had to draw it. Most normal guys who get a little bit aggressive will back off at the first sign of retaliation.
That doesn't mean thats how every encounter will go. Because you don't know what kind of guy you could be dealing with. For all you know you could be dealing with a psycho who would gladly beat you to death over a penny.
For anyone here who has their CCL, I hope you never have to use it. It's a great tool to have, but I pray none of you will ever have to use it.
