Okay guys, I'm back with another update. Sorry Its been awhile but life has caught up to me.
Truth is I'm getting bored with fanfiction. I think we're coming to the point where I am going to stop writing completely.
But until then, I'll write a chapter here and there.
I've just been busy, I've been considering buying some land up in the Northern part of wisconsin, and just building a cabin on it and going as off grid as possible. But most likely it would just be a hunting cabin and not something I could live out my days in. But we'll see.
At the ranch
Whitley was currently on horseback making sure no Grimm were going to go after the cattle he had. He still couldn't believe he had changed so much in the past year. If you had told him a year ago that he would be working a rough and tumble job while Jem was working in a high society political job. He would have punched you. But that was what had happened. Jem had become a council member and here he was living a humble life as a rancher.
And he loved it.
His father had never been one for manual labor, often he would say it was 'Menial work for the faunus'. And Whitley was ashamed to admit that he had those same thoughts at one point. But he had found so much fulfillment doing this. He got to do a very rewarding job knowing that what he was doing was providing food for possibly thousands to millions of people. He went home each night to a loving family who frequently had meals together.
"Babe, you don't have to be at high ready all the time." India said as she rode up next to him.
And since he was finally away from his father, he could date whoever he wanted.
His father would be pissed if he found out he was dating a Faunus. And he was fine with that.
"Can't I just live out my cowboy fantasy?" He joked as she giggled.
"You work on a ranch, you live it out everday. Anyways, its Friday, so everyone's coming to dinner tonight. Don't want you to spend too much time out here." She said as Whitley smiled.
"I just hope Jem is cooking a dish this time, don't tell my sisters I told you this, but he cooks better than those two." He said as they started to ride back together.
"Ha, he is. He's actually helping Mom cook up a prime rib right now." She said as Whitley resisted the urge to lick his lips.
"Your sisters brought some mac and cheese." His face went pale.
"Don't worry, Jem made them cook it right..." She said as she recognized that look on his face.
His sisters could cook just fine, but they sucked at making Mac n Cheese. Jem nearly had a heart attack when he saw the watery crap they made last time. And he had made sure they knew how to make it properly the next time. It was like watching a pissed off redneck Gordon Ramsey.
"I assume your dad is making the dessert?" He asked as she nodded.
You would never have guessed it by looking at him. But Mr. Indigo was a surprisingly good baker. He had worked in a bakery briefly when he lived in the city. And he had enjoyed the job enough that he had continued baking long after he had left. India was always surprised to see her father baking cookies on holidays vs her mother. It was surprisingly wholesome.
"Of course, you okay? You seemed deep in thought." She said as Whitley thought it over for a second.
"Just been thinking about how much my life has changed for the better." He said as they were riding back.
"It's hard to believe it's already been a year since everything changed. A year ago I was living in a mansion in the sky eating meals prepared by a butler while I was being groomed to be the next head of the SDC. And now here I am working on a ranch hunting for Grimm on the edge of the field." He said as India raised an eyebrow.
"Are you disappointed?" She asked as he shook his head.
"Nope, its the exact opposite. I mean, it was hard to adjust to waking up early, but now I look forward to seeing the sunrise every morning, I used to get exhausted, but now its all worth it just to get a home cooked meal at the end of the day, and for the first time in my life, my Mother has been sober. Everything has just gotten better overall." He said as she seemed to be waiting for something.
"Annnnnddddd..." She said trying to drop a hint.
"Oh, and you're cool too." He said in a joking tone.
"Ugh, meanie." She said as she stuck her tongue out.
"I'm kidding, you know I love you." He said as he leaned over and kissed her cheek.
"I know you big dork, now come on, I don't know about you, but prime rib sounds really good right now." As soon as she said that, she took hold of the reins of her horse and took off like a bullet.
"Ha, well Colt, looks like she wants a race." He said as he made sure his stetson was secure.
"Let her buck." He said as his horse took off speeding after India.
It was a simple life, but he had never been happier.
