Wow...Kind of amazed at my sort of last minute decision to throw in the 'Reincarnated Humanimal' thing really helped in helping me fill in some gaps in the story and really tie the whole narritive together. But anyway in this chapter Glass Joe grills Dana to find out if she they can trust her and unfortunatly while Dana doesn't exactly tell a lie, everything she says is true, she leaves a large gaping lie by omission which will have severe consquenses later on but what she gives Glass Joe here leaves him content enough he doesn't press further.
As Dana sat on Joe's kitchen table with the glass of ice water he provided her, she quietly lapped at her water like a dog, she was perfectly capable of drinking from the glass like a human, but she chose to lap her water so to better keep her eyes on Joe as he was at the counter preparing something.
He came to table bearing sandwiches cut into triangles.
"Watercress, cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches." Joe said "My most frequent lunch between training at the gym Bon Appetit!"
Now as a Mutant Dog, Dana was more omnivorous than an ordinary dog, most Mutants are omnivores though a lot of herbivores still refrain from eating meat seem grossed out by it regardless of which species it came from and seem to prefer to get protien from milk, eggs and plant sources like beans and nuts, that said she still wasn't the biggest fan of green vegetables but she liked cheese that made up for the watercress she nibbled daintily as her sandwich trying to mimic Joe in how he ate, she was still unfortunatly more like a dog in how she normally ate she tended to inhale her meals like her food might run away if she didn't get to it fast enough...Such was the way of instincts.
After both had finished one sandwich Joe sighed as now he had to get to the part of asking what could be difficult questions.
"All right..." He sighed "...I didn't want to have to ask thhis question but I realized it's better to bring it up sooner rather than later, were you...One of the Mutants who participated in the attack on New York?"
"No." Dana shook her head solemnly understanding the seriousness of the question "I came from a lab in Montana, after I escaped I wandered the Great Plains didn't come to New York until after Mutants were given Civil Rights."
"Ah." Joe felt relieved she was another newcomer mutant, many had come from far and wide because they wanted to be part of the creation of Forest and be in the same community as the Turtles who seemed to be an inspiration to mutants everywhere.
"All right let's talk about your past then." Joe said "I was told that how you paid for my bail was giving my friends money you...Stole from your creators..." Joe obviously didn't like he had been freed with stolen money but he was also fairly certain he was about to hear a tale about how horrible the scientists who Mutated his rescuer were so he likely didn't have reason to be too sore about it."
Dana knew these questions were coming the questions she dreaded she tried to remain calm more than anything did not want to appear nervous like she had something to hide. "What would you like to know?"
"Well." Joe obviously not an expert in Mutants was not sure how to best ask these questions "Why were you mutated?"
"What purpose?" Dana asked "Well...I think it was because the Lab was a Medical Reserch Facility with a particular interest in mental health, thus they created us as Chimera Mutants...That's the reason I have...AHEM...Certain human features." She pointed at her human-like breasts.
So what the W.V.B.A. Boxers had learned from watching TV was when animals weren't being mutated by accidental exposure to 'strange substances' (Mostly TCRI Mutagen, but other things had Mutated Animals those were rarer) the most common means of creating intelligent humanoid animals was creating 'Chimeras' or by splicing them with human DNA most often when they were embryos making them effectivly animal/human hybrids simple most 'logical' way to create mutants.
"I see." Joe said "And what exactly did they do to you in the Lab?"
"Well..." Dana said as she fiddled with a strand of hair "One of the things I know they did to me, was they tested some kind of 'brain enhancing medicine' on me while I was still a puppy being mutated."
"Oh?" Joe perked up this sounded juicy
"It made me psychic, but in a way no other Psychic Mutant I've seen so far...My psychic talent is just...Very weird..."
"Don't keep in suspense!" Joe said like a little boy reading a comic book "Tell me what it is! I work with Great Tiger, how strange can it be?"
"There is no way to explain it." Dana sighed "The only way I can show you is by demonstrating with you."
Joe felt the blood drain from his face "Will it...Hurt?" He asked
"Depends." Dana said "It's different for everyone...But...I just have to put my hands on your head..." She put her large furry hands on Joe's soft red hair "...And concentrate..."
And Joe got the strangenest experience he ever had in life! He was on the battlefield a scene Von Kaiser had described to him, but when Joe looked down he saw his own scrawny body doing Von Kaiser actions! Then the seen shifted and he was in Disco Kid's memories on the dance floor.
Rapidly shifting through the memories of his peers, gorging himself like King Hippo, eating sushi and meditating training like Piston Hondo, cutting down trees, and...Drinking maple syrup like Bear Hugger, as he reached Don Flameco's memories of bull fighting and Flamenco dancing he realized to his horror Aran Ryan was logically next, and he did not want to know what went on in his head.
He drew the stretch to reach with his hands to pull Dana's hands off his head...
"Ne fais plus ça!" Joe snapped agrily as he grabbed Dana's wrists, even if she didn't understand he said 'Don't do that again!' she knew through the universal language of emotions what he meant and despite being stronger than him she was alarmed by the fire in his eyes.
"Sorry..." She said meekly "...But now do you see what I meant?"
Running his hands through his hair as he calmed down from his trip he sighed "Oui, Madame now I see what you mean...Why you could not explain in mere words."
The sheer strangeness of his trip had lowered his defenses he felt what he had learned was enough, surely this strange psychic ability was the reason the scientists subjected her to cruel experimentation and whatever else gave her reason to escape.
"I believe you are trustworthy..." Joe said quietly "...So I will tell you why we need you, the secret we were hiding from your tortue leaders..."
So originally the idea for what initally just seems like a very weird version of mind trap where one is subjected to the memories of everyone in their social circle was just cuz I got weird images in my head of Joe acting like the other boxers, but now with Dana being a reincarnated Humanimal I realized it's glitchy version of the Humanimals dream sharing ability (Here it becomes more like Dreamfasting from The Dark Crystal) activated by the brain enhancing medicine but because she's now a Mutant not a Humanimal it's 'glitchy' Dana can't share her memories she causes whoever she touches to have access to the memories of everyone else they know
