As Cree Linchon strolled into the house after another uneventful meeting of the Teen Ninja's, she found her home strangely empty. No sound of the TV, or anyone in the kitchen or living room. As Cree apprehensively walked through the house, a note on the kitchen counter with two bags of candy and a 20 dollar bill next to it caught her eye. Cree picked up the note, in neat tight handwriting that she immediately recognized as her mom's, read:
-Cree and Abby, I'm leaving town for the day to visit Grandma and your dad got called in for a 12 hour shift at the hospital so he won't be back until midnight tonight. I left money for pizza and some sweets for you girls on the counter.
-Stay safe, mon cher's.
"Hopefully it's his last one." Cree thought of her dad as she put the note down, things had been calming down at the hospital in the now week since the Galactic Invasion ended, a welcome sign that things were steadily going back to normal.
Cree glanced up at the clock, it was only 3:45 so we could afford to lounge around a bit. Plopping herself in front of the TV, she started lazily surfing through channels for a while before stopping at a re-run of some documentary about aliens. Some old farmer guy was being interviewed, the guy kept blubbering about how he almost got beamed into a UFO before the aliens chose one of his cows instead. Almost instantly her mind went back to near the end of the Galactic Invasion, in the wake of Chad's kidnapping by the G.K.N.D and a still brainwashed Numbah 1.
--Flashback--
Cree clambered out of the laundry cart she'd been stowing away in, finding herself in her desired location: a K.N.D Moonbase hangar. "You know this is crazy, right?" Maurice hissed at her as he climbed out of the cart too, his suprise apperance nearly made Cree jump out of her skin.
"I specifically told you not to follow me. Why did you?" Cree dryly rebutted as she made a beeline for one of the smaller K.N.D spaceships. She quickly glanced up at the ceiling, the security cameras weren't active because their was no one to watch them, most K.N.D Operatives were on Earth dealing with Numbah 74.239's robotic army.
"Because you're going to get yourself killed if you try to break into the G.K.N.D's mothership! Do you even know how to drive a spaceship?" Maurice trailed behind Cree like a lost puppy as he spoke, he firmly grabbed her arm but Cree pulled away. The mention of the G.K.N.D mothership made Cree's mouth instinctively shut as she reached up to constrictively scratch the back of her neck.
"I was one of the best for a reason." Cree said without turning to face Marucie as she made her way over to the small spaceship, her statement allowing her jaw to open again while she turned her attention to the vessel. It was a tight squeeze for the two of them, but it would do. Besides, the smaller and less flashy they were, the better. After a few tries she successfully tugged open the door and snuck inside, Cree quickly put herself in the driver's seat while Maurice reluctantly slunk into the co-pliot seat.
"We have to save him, Maurice. Even though Chad's burned a lot of bridges, mine included, he doesn't deserve whatever fate the G.K.N.D has set up for him." Cree said as she started up the ship, ignoring the alarms that started to blare as someone finally noticed the unwelcome presence of the two teens. "If we don't, no one will." She continued, sounding both unsure and wholeheartedly confident at the same time.
--End Of Flashback--
Even now, just the thought of the G.K.N.D was enough to make her jaw tighten until it closed as she reached up to scratch at the back of her neck. She quickly flicked away from the alien documentary, landing on some news channel and staying there.
Hoping to busy her mind, Cree glanced up at the clock again, the clock had now moved to "3:55". She got up and walked back into the kitchen and picked up a bag of candy, at that moment Numbah 5 walked into the house and flopped down on the couch. She hadn't seen the candy yet, it was a perfect opportunity to suprise her!
"You would not believe the day that Numbah 5 had." Numbah 5 lamented, laying on her back as she stared up at the ceiling aimlessly. "Tiring day?" Cree asked as she sauntered over to the couch and sat down at the opposite end to her sister. "Like no other." Numbah 5 grumbled, her attention swifty refocused on the bag of candy that was thrown into her lap by Cree. "Awesome! Where'd you get candy from?" Numbah 5 asked as the two sisters tore into their respective candy bags. Cree could that their was a variety of sweets from chocolate to gummy bears, toffee, hard candy and-oh! Even some sour candy had been added to the mix.
"Mom left town for the day to see Grandma and dad's at work." Cree causally explained as she popped a gummy bear into her mouth. "Cool. What's for dinner?" Numbah 5 said before she partially unwrapped a chocolate rabbit and chomped it's ears off in one bite. "I'll order pizza later, don't eat all of that in one sitting." Cree lightly warned.
The two sat in ambient peace for a moment, enjoying their sweets. Neither sister could remember the last time they hung out like this, the Galactic Invasion showed both sisters how capable the other was while still being a sobering reminder of how close everyone had been to losing everything, no matter if you were with the adults or not.
Since the Invasion, Cree had made a promise to herself. She promised that she would never push Numbah 5 away again, and try to make things better between them.
A part of Cree couldn't help but picture Numbah 5 as the seven year old cadet, the cadet with a naive amusement towards most danger, the cadet who adored Cree as if she was the one who switched out the sun and moon every dusk and dawn. But then she blinked, and in the place of the starry eyed cadet was a mature, cool headed Operative and now the Supreme Leader of the K.N.D.
Cree was suddenly snapped out of her reminiscing by her little sister. "What's high school like?" Numbah 5 asked, smirking at Cree's thinly veiled but playful jealously as Numbah 5 stuck a handful of sour candy into her mouth and ate them without issue. "Still boring." Cree replied as she took a few sour candies, trying to one up Numbah 5 by eating them, but her face scrunched up almost immediately and she quickly swallowed. "Haha! Still can't take sour candy, sis?" Numbah 5 tittered, Cree smirked again and put the bag of candy aside. "Oh, you think that's funny, do ya?" Cree playfully growled as she lunged at Numbah 5, pulling the smaller girl into her arms and pinning her close in a bear hug.
"Nooo! Let go!" Numbah 5 squealed happily as she tried to wiggle free of her sister's grip. The other bag of candy was abandoned in the tussle as the two sisters play fought on the couch and eventually rolled onto the floor, Cree landing back first on the floor with Numbah 5 still in her arms. "You okay?" Cree asked as they both sat up, Cree standing up first before helping Numbah 5 to her feet. "Yeah, I'm good." Numbah 5 said.
"What kind of pizza do you want?" Cree asked as she walked into the kitchen. "Pepperoni! With extra cheese!" Numbah 5 cheered as she followed behind her.
