Jamie got that gut feeling that something was wrong. He had to get to Patrick and Eddie. He rushed out of the room and down the hallway. One of the guards looked at him.
"Whoa doc! Where's the fire?"
Completely ignoring the guard, he made his way into his and Eddie's room. His hair stood up on the back of his neck as he saw Eddie gasping for breath. Patrick's plastic bassinet was empty. He was at her side in less than a minute, practically climbing into the bed with her and pulling her into his arms, cradling her neck with his right hand.
"Honey, look at me. Breathe! What happened?"
Eddie did her best to answer, but the pain was an explosion in her chest, and it was crushing. Was she having a heart attack? What was going on? All that came out instead of an answer was a gasp. There was a call button on the remote on the bed. Jamie pushed it and in came a gaggle of nurses.
"Doctor Stevenson! What's wrong?"
Jamie shook his head, tears nearly brimming at the corners of his eyes.
"I don't know! I just came in and found her like this. She can't breathe!"
Climbing off the bed, he didn't let go of Eddie's hand. She looked at him with wild eyes. Her free hand clutching at her chest, one of the nurses was trying to ascertain the situation.
"Do you feel like something is sitting on your chest Jessica?"
Eddie nodded. She managed to utter out one word.
"Hurts…"
Jamie reached for Eddie's hand and squeezed it. Tears were coming down her cheeks. The wheels in his head were turning. He pointed to one of the nurses working on Eddie.
"She's having an MI. She needs aspirin."
Swallowing, he gave Eddie's hand a squeeze and a sympathetic look.
"It's ok sweetheart. I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere."
A nurse gave Eddie an aspirin and gave her instructions.
"Here take that aspirin. I want you to chew that. I know. It doesn't taste very good. That should help you feel better."
It was a few minutes, but Eddie felt better, the crushing weight on her chest was gone, and she could finally breathe. Jamie got a pit in his stomach as his eyes wandered back to the empty plastic bassinet.
"Where's Patrick?"
The tears began to spring from Eddie's eyes once more.
"He took Patrick."
His eyes widening, he put the puzzle pieces together.
"Rolanil took him, didn't he?"
Eddie let go of Jamie's hand and buried her head in the pillow, letting out a long and mournful sob. Jamie had never heard her cry like this before. He knew one thing was for sure, he was going to get Patrick back. Charging out the door, he strained his ears to see if he could maybe hear Patrick crying. He heard noise down the hallway to his right and then a baby begin to cry. He knew Patrick's cry. Taking off in a dead sprint, he followed Patrick's cries. He wasn't going to let Rolanil get away and take his son with him. 'Don't worry buddy, daddy's coming.' Jamie finally caught up with the two of them as Rolanil got to the top of the winding staircase that led down to the tunnels below the house.
"Mr. Rolanil, sir, please give me my son. He's innocent. He's never done anything to you. How much money do you want? Whatever you need, I can get it for you. No questions asked."
Jamie felt his heart jump into his throat as Rolanil climbed up onto the edge of the staircase with Patrick in his arms. His heart was hammering in his chest so hard he thought he might have a heart attack himself.
"Don't come any closer Stevenson. You do and I'll take your boy over this staircase with me and trust me, it's a long way down. He wouldn't survive."
Rolanil was dangerously close to letting himself fall off the ledge with Patrick in tow. Patrick's cries were now screams of panic. Jamie took a chance just as Rolanil pushed himself off the edge, quickly grabbing for Patrick before he could fall with him. Jamie was gasping for breath as he held Patrick in his arms. He managed to stumble back into the house and sink down against the wall of the hallway. Patrick's screams were only slight whimpers now and Jamie pressed a kiss to his forehead.
"It's ok buddy. Daddy's got you. I won't let anything happen to you."
Jamie was careful with Patrick as he looked him over. Patrick continued to whimper.
"No broken bones buddy. I'll have Doctor Matthews check you out anyways just to make sure. Let's get you back to mommy. She's very worried about you."
Gently getting to his feet, Jamie made his way down the sparsely decorated hallway and back to his and Eddie's room. Opening the door slowly, he saw Eddie in the bed, staring blankly ahead of her at the wall. Her eyes were red rimmed and her face splotchy from crying. Her head was leaning up against her pillow. Cradling Patrick in his right arm, Jamie reached a hand over and cupped Eddie's cheek.
"Babe look at me. I've got someone here that would like to see you."
It took a moment, but Eddie blinked, and the waterworks started again as Jamie placed Patrick in her arms.
"Hi baby boy. It's ok. Everything's going to be ok now. Mommy's here."
Drying her tears after a few minutes, Eddie looked Jamie straight in the eye.
"Where's Rolanil?"
Jamie felt the color drain from his face, and he felt his knees begin to buckle, so he sunk down in a chair next to the bed.
"He's gone."
Eddie became confused.
"What do you mean gone?"
Swallowing, Jamie looked at Patrick and then blew out a breath.
"He's dead. There's a door at the end of the hallway that leads to a long winding staircase under the house. He threw himself off it. He almost took Patrick with him. I caught him before he could go over the edge with Rolanil."
Swallowing again, Jamie took a moment to compose himself, then he ran a hand over Patrick's tiny head. Leaning in, he placed a soft warm kiss to her lips, and she reciprocated for a moment, until Patrick chimed in and began to whine. Pulling apart, Eddie gave a small laugh and looked down at him.
"Are you hungry baby boy?"
His whining continued and he stuck a hand in his mouth. Jamie smiled warmly down at his son. He lowered his voice.
"Ed, we'll get out of this place. I promise. Saving my family is what's important. My family and all the other mothers and babies in this place."
Eddie nodded, but her sole attention was on Patrick who was enjoying his meal and the closeness he shared with his mother.
To Be Continued…
A/N: So, what'd you guys think? I still have a lot more ideas to bring to the story. Rolanil may be gone, but someone else is quick to replace him. What's next for our favorite couple and their son? Stay tuned!
