Chapter 7: Good news needs to be Shared

"Maybe its food poisoning babe."

Eddie shook her head and felt her stomach betray her once more. Jamie grimaced and held her hair back as she leaned her head over the toilet. Her stomach for the briefest of minutes settled and she leaned back against Jamie who kissed the side of her head.

"Food poisoning doesn't last 6 weeks bub. I'm pretty sure I'm pregnant and this is morning sickness."

Jamie did the math in his head and his eyebrows shot up.

"But we were so careful."

Eddie fixed daggers at Jamie with her eyes.

"We weren't. Do you remember that really stormy night?"

Realization dawned on Jamie's face, and he rubbed her back.

"Oh yeah. Look, whatever your decision is, I'll back you up. 100%. If you don't think it's the right time then…"

Eddie got a look on her face.

"No. This is our baby. It moves up our plan a little. But we can adjust."

Eddie lies back and bounced her leg nervously on the exam table as they waited for Doctor Anderson. Jamie gave Eddie a sympathetic look and placed a hand on her left ankle to still her bouncing leg.

"Relax honey. She'll be in soon. We're in this together. Ok?"

Eddie nodded and squeezed Jamie's hand for reassurance. She opened her mouth to speak, but Doctor Anderson entered the room just then.

"Hi Eddie. I'm Doctor Anderson. You must be Jamie. It's nice to meet the both of you. I see the reason for you coming in today because you've been sick the last six weeks. Your urine sample came back. Your pregnant. I just want to get a quick ultrasound to get some measurements and see how your baby is doing. Is that ok?"

Eddie nodded and squeezed Jamie's hand. A nurse helped lift the bottom of Eddie's shirt slightly and put some gel on her abdomen. Turning on the ultrasound machine, Doctor Anderson placed the wand over Eddie's abdomen and moved it slowly over it. She stopped when she began to hear a heartbeat.

"Ok. Do you hear that? That's your baby's heartbeat. You are six weeks along. Your baby is very healthy."

Eddie felt tears come to her eyes, and then she felt Jamie's forehead against hers.

"Our baby."

Four days later…

"Ok, Eddie and I have some news."

Everyone at the table put their forks down and looked straight at Jamie and Eddie. A smile pulled at their lips as they touched foreheads and mouthed the words 'I love you' to one another. Frank broke the ice.

"So, what's this big news?"

Taking a breath, Jamie pulled an ultrasound photo from his pocket and placed it onto the table. Eddie passed it down to Erin, who pressed a hand up against her mouth.

"I bet its going to be a boy."

Eddie smiled at the thought. She wanted a girl, but something was telling her this baby was going to be a boy. It was just a hunch really. By the time the photo got to Henry, he smiled.

"Definitely going to be a girl. A girl and she's going to be spoiled rotten just like the rest of my gg's."

This elicited laughter from the rest of the family. It was Linda who spoke up next.

"Well, no matter if it's a boy or a girl as long as their healthy right? Although my money's on a boy. I could however see Jamie spoiling a little girl. She'd be a daddy's girl."

Jamie gave a warm smile and placed his left hand on Eddie's abdomen and rubbed it slightly under the table.

"Boy or girl. Doesn't matter to me. As long as their healthy."

Eddie couldn't sleep. She rolled over onto her right side only to find Jamie also wide awake. One of his hands cupped her right cheek, his thumb caressing it. While the other found its way under her tank top and landed on her abdomen.

"Hey, you ok babe?"

Eddie sighed and stared into Jamie's eyes.

"I can't sleep. I really think we're having a boy. I can't help but get this feeling like something big is coming and we need to protect this baby at all costs."

Jamie felt a pit begin to form in his stomach.

"Don't worry Ed. Dad won't let anything happen to us. I won't let anything happen to either of you."

Swallowing, Eddie took in a breath and let it out slowly.

"It's just a feeling Jamie. I'm not even sure what it means. It might be nothing."

Jamie pulled Eddie closer to him and kissed her forehead, then gently placing one to her abdomen.

"Daddy loves you."

Eddie smiled with her eyes closed and tucked herself into Jamie's arms. She loved being in them, it made her feel safe. Jamie continued his thought.

"I love you too babe. The both of you. I'll make sure that you are both safe. I know you can take care of yourself. But now there are two of you."

Jamie waited for a response, but all he could hear was Eddie's evened out breathing and soft snoring, which meant she was sleeping. Sleeping slowly enveloped him like a blanket. He wasn't going to let anything bad happen to either one of them. It was his job to keep them safe. They were his family.
