MalFin: Bittersweet

Akmal yawned as he rubbed his eye. The kettle was still boiling, and he couldn't wait for it to stop so that he could fix their drinks. He and Tino had had a late night, and both of them needed the boost to wake up.

He glanced over towards the door when Tino shuffled in, before he went over to the fridge. Tino stared at the interior for a long time before closing the door. Whatever it was that he was looking for couldn't be found in the fridge.

The kettle stopped boiling, and Akmal poured the hot water in the two cups. Tino's cup was filled with a dark liquid, while Akmal's was slightly lighter. Tino had black coffee while Akmal had hot chocolate with six spoons of sugar.

"Here you go," Akmal said, handing Tino's coffee to him.

"Thank you," Tino said, before he sipped his coffee. "You're a lifesaver."

Akmal sipped his hot chocolate, before he started to look in the kitchen cabinets. The hot chocolate was still too hot, and he needed sugar in his system. Tino just drank his coffee, as though the heat was of no consequence to him. Sometimes, Akmal envied that about his boyfriend.

Tino needed caffeine to function in the morning, but Akmal felt that coffee was too bitter for him, even after a dozen spoonfuls of sugar. He needed something sweet in the morning.

When I tell people that I don't drink coffee, the reaction I usually get is 'how do you do that' or 'I can't'. Coffee's too bitter for me, and adding sugar doesn't help. One time, the hot chocolate I ordered at a restaurant came with a shot of espresso that I didn't order. I tried to drink it, but nine packets of sugar later, I had to admit defeat and get another hot chocolate. I rely on sugar when I'm particularly tired, and even when I have a sugar rush, I don't crash. I kind of go down systematically. I also suspect that I might have a caffeine intolerance, as even a small amount makes me start to feel sick.
