Sorry I had to delete and repost this chapter as there was an issue I did not realize until now so I apologize for that if anyone struggled with that. Guess you technically get two chapters this week! :)
Serena and Cersei jumped from the bed quickly grabbing their clothes throwing them back on as fast as they could. Both shook with fear as the battle now loomed just off the coast. Near a hundred thousand men sailed straight for the city. There were barely a few thousand her in Kings Landing. It was not near enough but if Joffrey wanted to win it needed to be enough. Hopefully Joffrey or the council had some trick hidden up their sleeve.
Once Serena was dressed she ran to the corner of the room to where the shot of armor stood pulling it off the stand that held it up and strapping it onto her body. Cersei tried to offer a hand however she had no idea how to put armor on so she just watched. Serena struggled having never put on armor before herself however she had watched many soldiers and knights in Winterfell put on their own and was able to manage it before tying her hair back to keep it out of her eyes.
She looked beautiful and strong in the suit of armor and even more so once she added a sword belt to her waist. The northerner was probably the most ready for battle than anyone in Kings Landing. Everything was perfect. The armor fit like a glove and seemed strong enough to stop blade or an arrow. Not that Cersei would by cheap steel for a crap suit or armor. When it came to the Lannisters it was the best or nothing.
"You look beautiful." Cersei said.
"No you do." Serena replied.
The pair then locked in a passionate kiss. A knock on the door split the pair up before Cersei straightened herself out. It was time to go. They left the room Cersei going one way with her handmaidens in tow and Serena went to find Sansa to make sure she makes it to Maegor's. She would be safe there until the battle was over. Soldiers ran all through the halls screaming orders as they went by.
The northern girls heart was pumping and not out of excitement. She was nervous to take part in the battle. She took deep breathes trying to remain calm as she traveled through the dark halls of the keep. Eventually she came out into the throne room ominously lit by the flames that were lit around the pillars that held up the room. Sansa was standing in the middle of the room her handmaiden Shae standing right beside her.
"Sansa." Serena said approaching her sister.
Sansa looked at her older sibling shocked to see the sight of her in a suit of armor.
"Serena…where'd you get the armor? You can't seriously be fighting."
"I have to Sansa. I have to protect my cover if Stannis loses."
Sansa informed Serena that Stannis would execute her if he wins. It was a possibility but Serena had to take the chance. If the Lannister forces manages to prevail Serena's loyalty needed to seem absolute. If Stannis won she would plead her case to the Lord and Sansa and Ned would surely come to her defense.
"I...I understand." Sansa said with a frown.
The pair hugged tightly before Sansa told her older sister to be careful. As they walked away Serena grabbed Shae by the wrist stopping the foreign maid.
"Keep her safe." She said pulling out a spare dagger and handing it to the woman.
"I will. I promise." She said taking the blade and hiding it.
When they looked back to Sansa she was talking to Tyrion before Joffrey beckoned her. Tyrion approached Serena noting her nice fresh forged suit of armor.
"Nice armor." He said.
"Same to you my Lord." She said looking at his mismatched suit of armor.
He nodded with a smile and both followed Joffrey out of the throne room and towards the Mud Gate. Citizens ran through the city making their way back to their homes to stay safe from the coming storm. Soldiers ran through the streets putting the final preparations in place for the battle. It felt like it took years to get to the gate as anxiety took over. Her heart was beating nearly out of her chest.
The trio walked up the steps of the battlements and looked out onto the bay. Stannis's ships could not be seen just yet however they could be heard. The drummers beat on their drums as the sound of the drums echoed across the water. All the soldiers were shivering in their armor knowing they were outnumbered. All they knew was they had orders. Keep the Baratheon soldiers at bay and fight to a man.
Serena gripped the pommel of her blade awaiting the sight of the Baratheon fleet. Joffrey got jittery and asked Tyrion where the royal fleet was. It was a good question. If Stannis was attacking by sea would it not be better to launch a attack by sea instead of waiting for his forces to land? The two then got into a spat involving Lancel acting as a raven despite standing right next to each other. It made the girl chuckle a little.
Fear gripped everyone on the battlements as the Baratheon fleet began to come into view. One ship turned to two and two to four and the fleet continues to grow. Serena could only imagine how large the fleet truly was and how far or stretched out of the sun was shining on the bay. How could they best back such a force?
All their eyes widened when one ship from the Royal Navy. Joffrey was furious when the lone ship sailed out to meet Stannis's fleet. What was one ship going to do against and entire fleet? He screamed at his uncle who had shown barely a hint of fear or any emotion since taking the battlements. It was as if everything was going according to his design. They watched the ship sail towards its enemy.
Tyrion signaled for a torch that was brought to him by the pyromancer. The King's Hand held the burning stick waiting and watching. The Baratheon fleet moved closer to the capital and the royal ship moved deeper into the bay. Joffrey was clearly becoming more impatient with each passing moment. Tyrion then dropped the torch off the wall and onto the beach.
For a moment nothing happened. Everyone had wondered what the point of the signal was for. Everyone waited and looked around to see if anything happened. Then a flaming arrow was launched into the air from a cliff closer into the bay. Everyone watched as it flew closer to the ship. It disappeared into the water and for a moment Joffrey was about to chuckle at the plan until a small flash of green appeared in the water. It spread trailing and gaining on the ship before climbing up it. It was then it hit Serena.
Wildfire.
The ship then exploding in a large flash of green that caused everyone to turn away from the brightness and was followed by a loud boom. The blast could be felt from the walls of the city. Serena turned her head back to the bay to see the remnants of the blast to see the green light fading and the bay coming back into clear view. Dozens of ships were either sunk or heavily damaged. Fires engulfed many of the ships and the screams of burning men echoed off the water.
It made Serena want to cry to hear the soldier burning alive. Many of the men did not exactly want to be there. They were just doing their duty that they had sworn to do. The sound of men splashing into the waves could be heard. Joffrey seemed pleased at Tyrion's plan to use wildfire. All the anger and fury that was there moments ago had all but disappeared.
Perhaps after that stunt there will not be a battle. If Stannis was smart he would return to Dragonstone and lick his wounds. There was no way he actually attempts to land after that however this was Stannis and he was no ordinary commander. There was no knowing how many men were lost in the explosion. Everyone but Tyrion stood down thinking that was it. The King's hand knew better then to get his hopes up until it was truly over. The flames lit up the entire bay which made it easy to see the soldiers swimming in the water. Some struggled to remain afloat while others stripped off their armor to offload the weight. A entire swarm of then swam to the shore hoping to escape.
"I think them traitors have had enough." Joffrey said.
"Don't get your hopes up your grace." Serena started. "Stannis is not a commander to flee so quickly. We can only play that trick once and Stannis knows it."
Joffrey tried to make his case pointing to the destroyed and ablaze fleet. He was silenced however when dozens of small boats came into view backed with soldiers coming to land on the beach. Joffrey's face turned from joy to anger at seeing his uncle steadfast in his plan. Stannis was a very dedicated commander. The entire realm new that after Roberts Rebellion when he was told to hold Storms End and he did with an outnumbered army in a fully surrounded fortress with little to no food. Nothing made the commander waver in his plan. In the end Storms End stood and Robert won the war. Wildfire was a nice trick on Tyrion's part however Stannis had a hundred thousand men and that blast could only take out so many troops.
The wildfire took definitely had to have taken out a good portion of Stannis's force but there were still many more ships sitting in the bay many being hidden by the flames and columns of smoke from the burning ships. Tyrion ordered Sandor to rally a welcoming party for any Baratheon troop that manages to come ashore. The burned man poked Serena informing her she was to come along. Anxiety filled the young girl knowing for a fact she would be in the battle on the very front lines. The anxiety had initially faded when the wildfire went off in hopes that it would deter Stannis and end the battle before it truly began. She followed the man closely as he began grabbing men off the walls to join the small attack force.
Tyrion began ordering the archers on the walls to knock their arrows. They pulled the arrows from their quiver and knocked them on the bowstring before dangling it over a small fire to ignite the tip of the arrow. The arrows were held as everyone waited for the attackers came closer and closer to the shore. It was best to wait until they were as close as possible before letting the archers lose.
Once the boats were within feet of the shore the command rang out.
"LOOSE!"
The wore was repeated like an echo as soldiers repeated the command down a line to ensure it made it to the other end. Hundreds of arrows flew threw the air the burning tips lighting up the dark night sky. The flying wooden sticks arched downward and flew downward. Troops began dropping like flies as they were struck. At this time Sandor's party was assembled just next to the Mudd Gate in hopes of meeting any Baratheon who managed to land on the other side. All the men including Serena drew their blades from their scabbards.
The gate was pushed open and Sandor was the first to charge through the gate and onto the beach. He threatened the men if they died with a clean sword he would rape their corpse. That would be motivation enough to kill at least one man. It was not long before they met their first landing party. Despite his size Sandor was swift in blocking one mans attack and splitting him clear in two. Serena was not long behind in her first kill of the night. He was a young man no old than seventeen with the face of a baby. Probably never held a sword in his life until Stannis shoved one in it. Sadly there was no time to spare the young mans life and she quickly ducked and came back up jamming the sword into his stomach. Blood poured from the boy's mouth as he hit the ground sword falling to the side.
The sight made the girl want to cry. A young man who most likely wanted no part of this war had now lost his life in it by the northerner's blade. There was no time to mourn the young man as another charged in hoping to send Serena's soul to the gods. It would be for naught as it was his life that was tragically cut short. Hundred of men continued to pour off the boats and charge towards the gate. The small welcoming party despite taking some losses were holding their own against the much larger force.
Serena found herself up against three men all who showed age and were clearly experienced swordsmen. Preparing for the coming fight she lifted her sword in a defensive stance. The men were shocked at how well the girl responded as if she had been in a dozen battles. It was not too hard to take care of the first man as he went high and she went low. The next was a fair bit tougher however he fell just like his brother in arms. The final man did not want to cross swords with the high born after watching his friends fall however if he ran he would be a coward and there was no other choice.
Once the final man was dealt with it seemed like half a dozen appeared looking to take her on. Six turned to four as the archers on the walls shot them down. There was no way for one person to take on four. Serena prepared to stand her ground. She did so wonderfully taking the men on dancing around to block each swing of their swords. Their blades sung as they collided. Serena began to feel tired as the fight seemed like it would not end. Out of nowhere a dagger wielding man came in slicing one across the throat and tripping another and jamming the blade into his chest. The flicker of fire revealed the unknown soldier to be Bronn. Where did Tyrion find this man? He had to have Ben high born or raised in some Lord's army to learn how to fight like that.
She watched as he lifted the blade and threw it in her direction. It flew by and found itself lodged into a Baratheon soldiers head. She breathed a sigh of relief almost for a moment thinking the intended target was her. She gave the man a nod to say thanks and he stood up unsheathing his own blade as the pair fought side by side cutting down men left and right protecting the gate. At the same time both watched Sandor making way back for the gate in retreat with what remained of the welcome party. Not about to be left behind Serena and Bronn followed suit.
The gate slammed shut and was locked behind them. Baratheon soldiers banged on the door as they were unable to reach it in time before it closed. The Hound called for wine as what clearly looked like fear was painted on his face. Everyone seemed to be settling down quenching their thirst and resting their legs. Serena took the moment to grab a cloth that was laying around and wipe the blood off her blade. Some men could be heard whispering about the girl who had taken down half a dozen men all by her lonesome. It almost made some look up to her. All those who were skeptical of her loyalty had seen it confirmed before their very eyes. Perhaps it had been confirmed for Serena as well. There really was no way out of this now. At this point her honor or who she was loyal to did not matter. It was the young Stark hiding away in the Red Keep was all that mattered.
Tyrion came down from the battlements fuming in anger. It was a surprise that smoke was not shooting out from his ears. Why had the men retreated? Why were these men just sitting around doing noting. Did they not know an army was at their gates attempting to bash it in and sack their city? He calls to raise the ladders could be heard from over the walls. The walls would hold for a time but soon enough Baratheon men would make it to the top and take the battlements.
"Can I get you some iced milk and a bowl of raspberries too?" The small man asked sarcastically.
The tall man spat back at Tyrion before taking another sip of his wine. The Imp could not believe it. Sandor Clegane had tucked his tail between his legs in fear. The fearless warrior who obeyed Joffrey's every command including cutting down that butchers boy at the Crossroads was a craven.
"You are on the wrong side of the wall! Stannis's men are at the gates!"
"I lost half my men. The bay is on fire."
Joffrey screamed at Sandor to return to the battlefield and the order was refused. The scarred man just began to walk away to anywhere that was not on fire. Joffrey again screamed at him this time claiming 'your King commands you'. Tyrion mentioned how his was a Kingsguard and how the city would fall if he did not go back out there. Clegane stopped in his tracks and looked the golden haired boy King right in the eyes.
"Fuck the Kingsguard, fuck the city, and fuck the King."
Silence fell over the area...well as much silence as could befall a city during a large scale battle. Had the loyal Hound just said what everyone thought he just said? Serena could not help but crack a smile at his defiance. Joffrey just stood there watching as the man just walked away. Everyone was just waiting for the King to order the man's arrest or execution however it never came. The man just walked away leaving what remained of the small defense force without their commander. At that point there was no hope to win the battle. Their forces were depleted most of the Lannister army being in the Westerlands and the Riverlands.
Serena sheathed her sword and watched Lancel run over and begin speaking to the King. She took a few steps forward to listen to what was being said.
"Does she have urgent business?"
"She did not say."
Joffrey seemed conflicted about whatever it was. Tyrion tried to talk him out of it. Apparently Cersei had asked for Joffrey to be removed from the battlefield. Right now it was not the best idea. Joffrey being their on the front lines was the only thing motivating most of these troops. The King turned around and told his Kingsguard to represent him on the field of battle going against Tyrion's protests before taking a step down the stairs. Why she did it was unknown but Serena walked right in Joffrey's way.
"Your Grace you cant leave."
"I must...I cannot disobey my mother."
Serena sheathed her sword and placed a hand on each of his shoulders. The move was probably not the best but considering the circumstances he would probably understand.
"Your commander is gone and your army is depleted. The only thing keeping these men from just walking away is your presence on the battlements. You do not need to fight just stand and motivate your men."
Joffrey looked to Lancel and then Tyrion and back to Serena. The look in his eye told that he was at least considering it. It was all for naught as Joffrey did not change his mind and left with Lancel. As soon as the golden locks could no longer be seen many men began to grab their arms and leave. Serena took a step of the stairs and stood beside Tyrion who himself was losing hope. The Hand of the King was out of tricks and now most likely had no army to fight with. Baratheon men were now beginning to reach the top of the walls and fighting broke out on the battlements.
Soldiers began to clear out mumbling. 'It's over','Joffrey has lost','The city will fall'. Were just some of what the men were saying. Tyrion finally stepped up and attempted to grab their attention. No one seemed to hear him or at least pretended not to. Everyone looked down to Tyrion as the dwarf or whoremonger. No one ever took him seriously even after these last few months serving as acting Hand of the King and putting together a pretty good battle plan with the wildfire it did not change the minds of anyone. Again he called out and not a soul stopped to listen.
"Stop!" Serena screamed out.
The scream of the northern girl caused ever man to stop in his tracks and turn around. Surprising. They listened to the girl raised in Winterfell with the Starks but not Tyrion the King's own uncle. Tyrion shifted awkwardly and took a deep breath at the realization that everyone looked up more to her than him. He thanked the girl and went to give his speech.
"I will lead the attack."
The men immediately laughed at the statement. Sure the dwarf was a smart man but he was no General. Warfare was not his strong suit. He turned to his squire and called for his helmet. He then turned to Ser Mandon and informed him that he would bear the King's banner.
"Men form up! They call me half a man but what does that make the lot of you!"
A soldier cut the King's hand off saying there was only one way out.
"No. There is another way out. I will show you. We will come out from behind and fuck them in their asses! Don't fight for your king and don't fight for his kingdoms. Don't fight for honor. Don't fight for glory. Don't fight for riches, because you won't get any. This is your city Stannis means to sack. That's your gate he's ramming. If he gets in, it will be your houses he burns, your gold he steals, your women he will rape."
The men were now beginning to get into it forming up around the half an to listen to the motivating speech he was giving from the steps. Even Serena was getting into it listening intently to every word. He was a good speaker that was for sure. If there was ever a succession crisis Tyrion could definitely make a good run for the position.
"Those are brave men knocking at our door. Let's go kill them."
Everyone erupted in cheers as the speech ended. Tyrion took his helm from the squire as well as the axe that was held in the boys hand. He began down the stairs followed by Serena and Sr Mandon and behind him was the rest of the army. They marched through the city to a secret pathway that led to a tunnel that had been built beneath the city. Most likely it was built in the early days of the city to evacuate the royal family in times of battle. It was a miracle the tunnel was still in tact. The walls were damp with water and jagged pieces of stone stuck out. They had to be careful not to get caught on the sharp pieces and damage their armor or sustained a wound.
The further down the tunnel they went the more the sounds of waves crashing against the shore and the clattering of blades could be heard meaning it was taking them directly to the beach as Tyrion said it would. This would be a path Serena would have to remember. It could be used in her and Sansa's escape. At the end of the tunnel they reached a locked gate which led straight out onto the beach behind where Stannis's men were attacking making it a perfect sneak attack not even Stannis could anticipate.
Tyrion broke the lock with his axe and they charged through the gate and out onto the beach. Serena ripped them sword from the sheath and charged with them. It was not long before they reached the Baratheon troops at the Mudd Gate. Tyrion was the first to attack cutting half of a man's leg off and burying the axe in the man's face when he hit the ground. Serena brought her blade up to defend from the attack of a soldier who had noticed the surprise attack. She took him down with ease.
It did not take long to take out most of the force and take down the battering ram and set it blaze. The Lannister soldiers surrounded Tyrion chanting 'halfman' while raising their swords. He seemed to be basking in it. Finally getting a bit of respect instead of insults. Serena felt happy fro a Tyrion. Truly. All these years he was spat on and out of all the Lannister's he had to be one of the best and kindest of them and did not deserve any of the mistreatment's he received.
She watched as his face turned to fear. She turned around to see a large Baratheon force charging at them.
"Oh fuck." Serena said in most likely one of the first times she had ever swore.
All the men turned their attention to the army and got into a defensive position creating a line. The army hit them hard instantly breaking the line. Serena felt herself being pushed back into a corner with several men surrounding her and her back against the city wall. One came at her with a sword above their head. Serena ducked low slicing his stomach and came up quickly stabbing another through the chest. The way she danced around sent fear into the hearts of the Baratheon's. Never in their lives had they seen anyone fight like the northern girl had and some had seen plenty of combat. One was old enough to have fought in Robert's Rebellion and the Greyjoy Rebellion and had fought in dozens of battles.
Every time one man fell it seemed like two more came in their place. Thankfully Bronn arrived and relieved some of the pressure quickly taking out two men with his sword and a third with a dagger to the neck. Gods was that man quick. They pushed the men back hoping to reunite with the main bulk of the army...what was left of it. Perhaps that would give them a chance to at least hold the line. Reuniting with the main army was impossible. There were too many in between them and each second more and more men fell. It was so hopeless some men dropped their swords and ran. Cravens.
It was not long after Serena saw Tyrion standing before a member of the Kingsguard who looked down at him. The small man took a few wobbly steps as if drunk and the fell back unto the ground. Blood poured from a slash he took across the face. Had the Kingsguard done that? Instinctively she ran towards the gold armor clad man and went on the attack. The Knight was taken off guard at first but had enough time to get into defensive position and repel the blow. The two blades sung as they clanged together. Like h duel with Jaime Serena had the upper hand most of the entire time. She did not feed her ego with it and kept a level head.
Serena eventually make a misstep and lost herself for a moment allowing the opponent to slice her across the stomach. A scream escaped her lips from the pain as the swing was so fierce it cut clean through the armor and into her flesh. There was no way to see how bad the wound is considering the situation but it did feel quite bad. She fell to the ground from the shock. The man lifted his sword and before it could be brought down was dropped as a spear was impaled through his head. The Knight fell hitting the sand unveiling Podrick Pane with the broken spear still in his hand.
He ran over and helped the girl back to her feet. The pain in her stomach was not necessarily excruciating it did nearly cause her to nearly fall back over. She got back up and expecting the pain was sable to stay up. Her and the squire quickly ran over to Tyrion. The slash ran diagonally clear across his face blood oozing out of it. It did not seem so bad as if originally looked from a distance. Both called to the acting Hand not reviving any answer. He was still awake just in shock looking around not saying a word.
Then came the blast of a horn. Serena looked up to see hundreds more Baratheon soldiers charging towards them. Seriously? These people don't give up! She stood up from the ground gripping her sword tightly and grinding her teeth as the pain shot through her torso. As the army arrived they immediately engaged. Serena took one down and engaged in a fairly lengthy duel with another. The pain was beginning to slow her down and with the loss of blood was beginning to make her feel light headed.
The world began to spin as the lightheartedness took over. The swords of clashing swords and screaming men rang out on the beach. Men could be seen missing limbs or having pieces of them cut off. She saw a soldier coming for her and slowly and wobbly. Her form was off. It took a moment but he too fell like all his brothers in arms. By now Serena was about to fall over but the blast of another horn caught everyone's attention. Serena looked up and where the Baratheon's had come from came another army. An army flying crimson red banners with golden lions and a green banner and golden roses. Lannister's and Tyrells. Were the Tyrells now on the Lannister's side? Had they come to fight on behalf of Stannis?
All the questions were answered when their swords began cutting down Baratheon men as the Calvary charged in. She saw a man with armor that looked like a stag. Was it Renly's ghost? Then there was another man on horseback much taller than the other with the best and shiniest suit of armor she had ever seen. Tywin. The Lannister's retreated from the Riverlands and game to save the city grim Stannis. With the battle all but won Serena fell to the ground with the world turning black and the sounds of battle fading.
