The Tribrid Awakening

Klaus was grinning as Greta prepared to begin the sacrifice ritual. It was finally about to happen. The curse that had plagued him for a thousand years would be gone shortly. This had been all he'd wanted for centuries. Well, almost all he wanted. There was one thing he wanted more, but he wouldn't think about that. There was no use dwelling on the impossible.

Elena was terrified, not for her, but for Jenna. Her aunt was about to die because of her. She'd tried pleading for her life, but it was fruitless. It wasn't supposed to happen this way. She'd stayed and hadn't fought so that her loved ones would be safe. It had been for nothing.

Elena soon felt strange. Actually, she'd felt strange for a whole for a while. She thought it was trepidation for the upcoming sacrifice, but it was getting worse, and now she was starting to feel pain, a lot of pain. "Ah!

Klaus chuckled as the girl doubled over in fake agony. He supposed he couldn't blame her. It was natural to do everything in your power to avoid death. Unfortunately for her, it wouldn't work. "Oh, love, if you think that's going to work, you're mistaken."

"Elena? Elena, what's wrong?" Jenna asked concerned as she listened to her niece scream in pain.

"I don't know! It feels like my bones are breaking," Elena said before letting out a blood curdling scream as she heard several of her bones snap.

"Carry on, Greta. This is obviously a ploy," Klaus told his witch.

Elena's head suddenly popped up and her eyes turned yellow. Then the fire around her suddenly disappeared, as did the one around Jenna.

"She's transitioning. The ritual won't work with a werewolf doppelganger. She has to be human," Greta said.

"No!" Klaus yelled angrily.

Elena continued to scream as her body was engulfed in pain. She could barely think, but she understood enough of what had just been said to know that she was turning into a werewolf. But it was impossible. She didn't have that lineage, and she'd never killed a human. How was this happening?"

"Elena!" Jenna yelled in concern. Her niece was clearly in excruciating pain, and no one was doing anything to help her.

"What the hell is going on?" a voice called out. It was Bonnie. She, Elijah, and Damon had come after hearing her screams. Stefan was also there now.

"You're supposed to be dead, love," Klaus commented. Not that it mattered anymore. Any chance of him breaking his curse tonight had just ended.

"What did you do to her?" Bonnie asked as she advanced on Klaus.

Elijah pulled her back. "It wasn't him. I've seen this before. She's turning into a werewolf."

"That's not possible. Her family doesn't descend from werewolves, and she hasn't killed anyone," Bonnie said.

"She did," Elijah said as he looked at Elena sadly. "She daggered me."

Klaus raised an eyebrow in surprise. He didn't know that counted towards triggering the curse. Then again, there was no way he could've known. No one with the gene had ever daggered one of them. Very few had. In fact, he was fairly certain that himself and the doppelganger were the only living ones on that list.

Elena continued to scream, but things seemed to get even worse. If the pain of her bones breaking wasn't enough, she began to get a crippling headache, accompanied by several flashes. The first flash she got was of Klaus. She was young, and he picked her up into his arms. He was smiling. It wasn't the evil, terrifying smirk she'd seen tonight. It was genuine happy smile filled with love.

The next flash was Elijah. He was holding Elena in his arms and reading to her. Elena got another flash of a blonde woman sitting on the ground playing with her.

Elena didn't understand what was happening, but she didn't have time to dwell on it. The flashes kept coming until she came to one involving Stefan. In this one, she could hear him speak.

"Your name is Elena Gilbert. You only remember being Elena Gilbert. Your parents are Miranda and Grayson Gilbert. Your brother is Jeremy Gilbert," he was saying.

The flashes cut off as she felt another wave of pain. She looked at Stefan, who was several feet behind Klaus. "What did you do to me?"

"I didn't do anything to you, sweetheart, much to my disappointment," Klaus said, assuming the girl was talking to him.

"Not you, him. Ah! Make it stop!" Elena screamed.

"It's not going to stop. It will only get worse. If you don't' stop fighting it, it will take hours," Klaus said. He didn't know why he was telling her that. He shouldn't care if she suffered this pain for longer than necessary. He should relish in it, given that she'd cost him the chance of getting rid of his curse, but for some reason, he didn't like seeing her in this pain.

Fighting made it worse, Elena thought to herself. So, she had to stop fighting it. Of course, that was easier said than done.

"Anyone who doesn't want to be ripped to pieces by an uncontrollable wolf might want to leave soon," Klaus said. He didn't particularly care if they did or not, but he'd given them fair warning.

Stefan flashed over to Jenna, followed quickly by Bonnie. "We have to go."

"No! I'm not leaving my niece!" Jenna yelled.

"Jenna, you have to. She's turning into a werewolf. Vampires are werewolves' natural enemies, and they can't tell the difference between a random vampire and a loved one when they're in wolf form. She'll kill you, and she'll never forgive herself for it," Bonnie told her seriously.

"I can't leave her!" Jenna cried.

"Jenna, go!" Elena yelled through her pain.

Stefan grabbed Jenna and Bonnie and ran away with them at vampire speed. The others left as well.

Klaus was the last one there. He stayed long enough to watch the girl complete the change before leaving himself.

Stefan stopped running just as they made it back to the boarding house. Damon arrived just after them. Elijah and Klaus were nowhere in sight, thankfully.

Jenna shoved Stefan hard enough to throw him to the ground. "What did you do? What did you do to my niece."

"Jenna, it's not his fault. The werewolf gene is a part of certain bloodlines. When they kill someone, the curse is triggered. We didn't know Elena had the gene," Bonnie explained.

Jenna shook her head and glared at Stefan. "He did something to her. She was looking at him with betrayal in her eyes. She thinks he did something to her."

"I…I didn't," Stefan insisted.

"She was obviously confused. She just turned into a freaking werewolf. It's obviously messing with her head," Damon said.

"Why would she think Stefan did something to her in that case?" Jenna asked.

"We're not going to know what Elena was thinking until she can tell us," Bonnie said.

"Is that ever going to happen? She… She's not going to be a wolf forever, right?" Jenna asked. She was still very new to this world. She knew nothing about werewolves.

"No. She'll only transform on the full moon," Bonnie said.

"That's going to happen to her once a month?" Jenna asked in horror. She didn't know why she was surprised though. She may not know much about real werewolves, but she knew the myths. Werewolves were believed to transform once a month. She should know that much at least. She guessed that she was still in shock.

"From what I understand, it won't be that bad forever," Bonnie assured her.

"So, she'll be herself the rest of the time?" Jenna asked.

"For the most part. There will be some abilities she'll have that she didn't before, but there won't be any adverse effects. Let's go get Jeremy and I'll take you guys home. You can't go inside the boarding house without Elena here to invite you in. I'll take you guys home and answer any more questions you have," Bonnie told her.

Jenna nodded and followed her.

"What the hell just happened? She was never supposed to turn," Damon said in a low voice barely above a whisper. He didn't want anyone else hearing them.

"I didn't know daggering Elijah would trigger her curse. I thought it was just humans dying that triggered it," Stefan said.

"Werewolves can't be compelled. How much do you want to bet that every compulsion that has ever been put on her is now gone. She will remember everything! If she tells Klaus, you're as good as dead," Damon said.

"You mean we are," Stefan said.

"First of all, you and Katherine started this. I just used the situation to my advantage later. Second, I'm as good as dead anyway," Damon said before pushing the sleeve of his jacket up to reveal his werewolf bite. "You better do something fast."

Stefan looked on in shock as his brother left. Damon had been werewolf venom in his system. Normally, he'd be worried about that, but he had bigger problems. Damon was right. If Klaus found out the truth about Elena, and Stefan had done to her, he was as good as dead.
