CHAPTER 2
Charlie was quick to run to Vaggie's defeated form. She couldn't be dead, not her! She kneeled beside her partner and checked her. Her forefront was bruised, but there wasn't any other sign of harm. And sure enough, the angel woke up suddenly.
"Where is he? I skewer him!" she said frantically, a bit wobbly. Charlie quickly helped her not fall down.
"How am I still alive?" Vaggie touched her forehead, noticing just a scratch and nothing more. She was starting to think that she became invulnerable when she saw Angel Dust rising up: the sinner was touching his midsection hissing in pain but seemed otherwise fine. Nifty got up as well, with a comically large bump on his forehead and a confused expression.
"The weapon he used against us… it was a normal weapon! But, the bullets…" Vaggie stopped when she saw Charlie opening her right hand, still morphed, showing a silvery bullet.
"Definitely angelic. What the heck is going on here?. The former exterminator was confused: she had been heavily trained in warfare and still couldn't figure out how it was possible.
" Well, what do we do with that dickhead there? Is he even alive? ". Husk got back up and started dusting his mane, while looking at the body of the assassin.
"I think so. Tie him up Angel, use blessed rope, don't want to take any chance". Charlie returned to her contained form, her eyes filled with determination.
"What? He tried to kill us! I say that we leave him with Nifty and her Adam-killing knife" protested Angel Dust, whose stomach still hurt. Maybe those were just normal bullets, but still hurt like a bitch!
"No, do as Charlie said, Angel!". Vaggie's voice was filled with authority, and when Husk looked at her, she didn't flinch.
"That bastard was sent here to kill Charlie. I want to know who sent him and why!". Angel groaned, then went to grab a blessed rope to bind the assailant. He was surprised that there were so few scratches on his body for someone that had been crashed on a wall by a giant dragon.
" Too bad we're not on a set, you are a sexy one, Papa Wolf!" Angel Dust turned around, watching his friend staring questionably at him.
"What? I have eyes, you know?" he retorted while his hands handily tied the intruder tightly.
"Oof, can anyone give me the number of the motherfucker that shot me?" Cherri Bomb finally woke up, finding herself in a semi-destroyed hotel hall.
"Oh shit, did I lose some bombs?"
"No, that's Razzle's doing. You ok ?" Charlie asked, concerned. Cherri nodded, reassuring her.
"No problem, I was roughed up but nothing that a drink cannot solve. So, are we exploding that goddamn hellhound or what?"
"Calm down, Cherri, first I want to question him. Apparently, he is a hitman that wants my head". Charlie rushed to stop her friend, who just raised her shoulder.
"Suit yourself. Hey cat, I want something to drink, is there still something in your bar?"
Suddenly, the rest of the wall exploded as a searing golden light illuminated the hall.
"There goes my wall… again" sighed Charlie, as the figure of her father appeared frantically.
"OhmygoshCharlieareyouokImsorrythespellwentofflateIwasinHeavenand…" Lucifer started to frantically speak, only to be interrupted by Charlie putting a comforting hand on his shoulder.
"Calm down, we have seen worse, everyone is ok ''. Charlie calmed his overworried father. Yes, they risked death again but this time everyone was just roughed up. Although, she couldn't shake the feeling that they would have been dead, had the assassin fought seriously. Which begged the question: why didn't he?
Vaggie, in contrast, was furious that she was alive because basically her opponent didn't fight to kill her, she felt insulted. She, however, swallowed her pride: she was glad to be alive to see Charlie again.
"So… you tied him instead of…what was it?... fuck him up? Why?" asked the King of Hell, curious.
"He was sent by someone, we would like to know why"
"She would like to know, I'd be glad to put him in the ground!" Angel Dust retorted, still sore. Charlie didn't comment on that, as the feeling was understandable.
"Mhhh… I'm gonna make some calls. I know a guy who I think knows a guy, tell me if he wakes up" Lucifer said, while exiting the rubble of the hotel, phone in his hands.
Charlie looked at the unconscious hitman, who was now tied up to a chair, his head leaning down. Despite the terrible hit he took he was barely scratched. Something shone from inside his jacket, grabbing her attention. She tentatively moved it, revealing a gun, but it wasn't the same that shot the bullet she blocked, as it didn't have any silver pattern on it, typical of angelic weaponry. And since that gun was lost somewhere in the crumbled wall, she didn't take long before putting the pieces together.
"Vaggie, look at this" Charlie said, looking at her girlfriend. The fallen angel looked at the gun, recognising it as the weapon that shot her, Angel Dust and Nifty, and suddenly she reached the same conclusion as Charlie did. It was so simple, when she thought about that.
"Incredible, I haven't even noticed that he changed the gun midfight. This is really dangerous, more than we thought". Charlie didn't answer that, but she just stared at the assassin, lost in thoughts. Why did someone hire him to kill her? What enemies could she possibly have to make them look for someone so skilled and dangerous? She was the Princess of Hell, but her title carried little meaning.
"Charlie? Honey?" Vaggie called, and that woke up Charlie from her thoughts. "Sorry Vaggie, I was just…lost in thoughts, I guess".
Before Vaggie could say anything, Lucifer came back into the hotel.
"Ok, I guess I found someone who could tell us at least who this is. Maybe also why did he attack you all, though I don't have many hopes in that regard. Be back in a jiffy, contact me if this one ever wakes up"
"Ok dad, thanks". Charlie greeted her dad as his form crossed a golden portal and disappeared. She felt safe with him around, but knew that he would be back really soon, so she wasn't too much worried.
"Soooo Hon…about that arm…". Vaggie pointed at Charlie's right arm, who was now back to its skinny pearly white-coloured frame. She still held the silver bullet in her hand.
"Don't know what to say, it just…happened. It was like I was fighting Adam again. I just…did it". Charlie couldn't really explain what was really going on, but at least that couldn't be negative, since it helped her gain the edge against the deadly assassin. Could it.
"Your powers are evolving" Husk intervened, joining them while holding a glass of liquor. Cherri Bomb and Angel Dust, each having full glasses themselves. When Vaggie looked at him with a questioning stare, he frowned.
"What? We're alive by a miracle and still hurt like hell, we deserve it! Anyhow, I was saying…" and he turned to Charlie, with a serious look on his feline face. "Demon's power varies a lot, but we know for sure that when a sinner demon or royalty reaches the peak of his power they change form, to reflect the nature of this power. This however applies to full-blooded demons. You are half-angel, and your father is the most powerful entity in Hell, so who knows what sort of power you actually have in store. What you did was probably a sign that you reached a milestone in your development". The cat demon concluded his explanation with a solemn look.
Charlie looked at her arm. Aside from a small scar on her palm, there wasn't a sign that the bullet ever hit her. She sighed, not really comforted by Husk's explanation; she wondered how this increase in power would change her and, more important, if that was the reason someone was onto her. She looked at the point where her father disappeared and prayed that when he would come back he had some answers.
Meanwhile, in Imp City.
Blitz was sitting with his legs on the desk, reading a comic book. Despite it being about horses, his eyes were still sour and unhappy. I.M.P. had just completed a job on Earth, Millie and Moxxie were out on a date and Loona was scrolling through Voxtagram like she usually did all day long. Usually, at this point, the imp had few ideas on how to spend the rest of the day but this time he had none. And that meant that he was alone with his thoughts, something he wasn't looking forward to. Yes, he was able to mend things with Fizzarolli, something he sought for fifteen years, but seeing him in a happy relationship with Asmodeus just launched him into another flurry of thoughts he didn't really like.
"Gaah, this comic is bullshit!" he screamed, throwing the book away.
"All comics are, Blitz, comics are for sad fucking nerds with too much free time and too little vaginas slash dicks in their life" the young hellhound retorted from her sit, without looking up from her phone.
"That was once upon a time, young lady, now it's a refined art…except that sorry excuse I bought when I was probably too drunk".
"Whatever you say, Blitz".
Blitz sighed. "Ugh, let's just go home, I don't think any client will knock at the door any second now…". But as he was grabbing his jacket a golden portal opened right in front of the door and a man with pearly white skin and clad in a white ringleader suit crossed it.
"Hello, I hope to be in the right place, Asmodeus wasn't really precise with the indication. I am looking for…Mr. Blitzo, I think? I have a matter to discuss with him" Lucifer said, not noting that Blitz's jaw was hitting the floor. Loona, confused by the adoptive father's attitude, tried to shake him up.
"Dad…you ok?". Being called 'dad' seemed to restore Blitz a little.
"One second please, will be right back!". The imp quickly grabbed Loona and stormed into his office, closing the door behind him while Lucifer looked at the two, a bit confused.
"What's going on Blitz? You seem…nervous" Loona asked. She was starting to be really concerned about Blitz, as he never showed this type of behaviour before.
"And why aren't you, Satan dammit? That's the biggest dick in Hell itself, Lucifer motherfucking Morningstar. In my office!"
Loona peeked out of the door of the office, looking at Lucifer, who was apparently interested in her computer but otherwise unassuming.
"I always figured him as taller".
"Really? Judging him for his size when Millie exists and is a fucking Terminator?" Blitz answered in a deadpanned tone.
"A fair point. So, what do we do?".
Blitz was unsure. It wasn't the first time he had to deal with one of the Big Seven, but this was the biggest! Normally he wouldn't be afraid to face the princes of Hell, but Lucifer being in his office of his murder business? It was concerning at best.
Blitz put on a fake smile and sat on his desk. "Let's be professional Loony and see where it goes. It could be profitable, after all". He fixed his jacket and checked his horns before signalling Loona to let him in. The hellhound opened the door. "You can come in, Mr. Morningstar".
"Oh, thank you!" Lucifer answered, and he composedly sat in front of Blitz, shaking the clawed hand the imp was giving him.
"Good Evening to you, the name is Blitz, the O is silent. How can we help your majesty? Is there some mortal talking shit about you? We have special prices for that, and for a little extra we also do torture, maiming and satanic ritual, if that's in your interest. You name it, we murder it!" Blitz started blabbing, trying his best to hide his nervousness.
"Ehm…I am flattered, but what I need is consulting, since I have been told you are one of the best in your field" Lucifer said. He didn't really know why Asmodeus sent him to an imp, but the fact that an imp was managing a business, a murder one, in Hell with moderate success was curious itself. And Oz was quite sure that he could be of help.
"Oh…"Blitz's face fell flat. He was starting to imagine a dangerous and grandiose job, instead it was only his knowledge that was required. Pretty disappointing, but Blitz was still a businessman. Besides, it was still a good advertisement saying that he did a job for the King of Hell himself.
"Sure, , what do you need to know exactly?".
"You see, my daughter had a…close encounter with an assassin and I would like to know if you are able to tell me anything to know about him. Any kind of information" Lucifer explained. Blitz could read some concern in the eyes of the King of Hell and he instantly could relate: if his daughter was ever to be attacked, he was ready to destroy Hell itself. Suddenly he felt at ease.
"Well, if your daughter survived she must be one hell of a badass. So, do you know the name? That would be a good start" Blitz asked, now more in his element. He surely had vast knowledge about the cohorts that worked in his field, so he was positive that he could be of help now.
"Oh yes, I think my daughter told me. The name is…Wicken? I think".
Blitz started to laugh loudly, ignoring the confused faces of Lucifer and Loona.
"Ahahaha, and they told me your majesty wasn't funny. No but seriously, what's the name?"
Lucifer's face grew serious. "Are you implying that my daughter is lying, Mr. Blitz?".
Blitz shook his hands in front of him, suddenly alarmed by the shift in his behaviour.
"Oh, no no Mr. Morningstar. But if we are talking about the same person, your daughter would have been dead where she stood…" Blitz bit his lip: damn his large mouth, he probably condemned them all on the spot! Luckily, Lucifer managed to calm himself.
"Well, as you said, my daughter is a badass. Can we get to the point? He is tied up in my daughter's hotel at the moment, but I don't know when he will wake up, so I'd like to do things as quickly as possible".
"Well, if it is him, I'd say you got the deadliest assassin in all Hell. Pains to admit it, but we're noobies compared to him. He's basically a legend amongst killers, and has been said to have sacked Overlords and Goetia. Even had a run in with Belphegor herself and survived, I mean…he is The shit with capital S! But it's been at least a decade since he was last active, presumably dead, so I think you likely met an emulator".
Lucifer mused on what the imp said for a while. "If you have the chance to look at him, will you be able to tell if he's the real deal or just a dud? I mean, he wrecked the hotel and everyone in it would have been dead had he used angelic weaponry, or so I have been told…"
Blitz curiosity was suddenly grabbed by this statement. "I might be able to help. Do you have a photo, by chance?"
"Better yet, I can portal you there, If you want. Also, for the payment, I hope these suffice…" With a snap of his finger, at least ten sacks full of money dropped from a portal right on Blitz's desk. Blitz's eyes widened while he started to drool.
"Sooo many horses…I mean sure, they will be fine. When do we leave?"
Lucifer's finger snapped once again, opening a portal behind him."Right now". Blitz jumped down his chair, fixing himself. "Ok, let's go. You comin', Loony?". The hellhound looked at the portal.
"Well, I had a party at Beelzebub…well fuck that bitch, this is more interesting!". Loona was actually curious: an assassin so good even her adopted father respected him? Blitz, the one who had no respect towards anyone and was able to laugh in the face of the King of Hell himself? Beelzebub could eat shit for all she cared.
Meanwhile, back at the hotel…
Charlie was surprised when a portal opened in front of them. It had been a few minutes that Lucifer left, and he was already back? Talk about fast…
Sure enough, her father exited the golden portal, followed by a noticeable tall imp with very long horns, a wide white scar on the right part of his face and a suit that wasn't that different from the one the assassin had, and a very tall and slender light grey-furred hellhound.
"Welcome back dad, who did you bring?". But before Lucifer could answer, the imp came forward. "Hi, name's Blitz, the O is silent, expert murderer. This is Loona, my daughter…"
"Adopted".
"...the light of my life. So, what are we dealing with? Where is he?"
Charlie was quite taken aback by the bombastic attitude of the imp, but she didn't find it to be totally unpleasant. Also, she was a bit moved with the way he described his daughter, who he clearly loved very much.
"Ehm…right there?". Vaggie pointed at the unconscious body near the rubble. Blitz looked and his eyes started to sparkle with excitement.
"Christ on a stick, it is him in the flesh! The man who killed ten loan sharks with a single chopstick while he was still eating! I've only managed two so far!"
"Ehm…what?" Charlie was quite confused at the Imp statement, but was largely ignored as Blitz continued to fawn over the unconscious assassin.
"This is the guy who almost ended all the Dukes of the Goetia back in the days. Eh, if you go down to Sloth, people still remember and shit their pants…"
"Wait, what? How?" Loona interrupted the rumbling of his father because something he said didn't really match. Something Lucifer also took notice of.
"How? With a gun stuck on their…"
"Not that, dad. He wouldn't be able to even put foot in Sloth- Or every other ring, for that matter"
Blitz was quite confused at the daughter's statement. "The fuck are you talking about? Stolas's son in law or whatever saw him with his eyes, all fours". Now it was Loona's turn to be confused.
"You got it to, young hellhound?" Lucifer asked with a serious and concerned look. Loona nodded quietly.
"Got what, dad?". Charlie was starting to be a little left out. Lucifer turned to his daughter. "Try to perceive him, Charlie. What do you feel?" Charlie looked at the killer with different eyes and all was clear.
"A human soul. He's…a sinner" she stated. Blitz was more confused.
"Whaaat? Nooooo…it can't be, a sinner cannot escape this shithole to go in other shitholes, no offence your greatness. He wouldn't be able to build such a reputation if he had to be stuck here. Let me have a closer look". Blitz got closer to examine Wicken. To him, he looked like a hellhound, albeit his face seemed to be too short for a lupine one. Maybe some inbreeding? A halfbreed?
Suddenly, Wicken's eyes shot open and, before anyone could do anything, his long legs moved rapidly and surrounded Blitz, grappling his neck in between them and starting to squeeze him.
"Now, if anyone moves even a finger, I crush his neck and splatter his blood everywhere. Miss Morningstar, could you be a dear and untie me so I can finish killing you? I was having fun with you and your angelic fuckdoll".
A radiant light illuminated the hall as Lucifer assumed his demonic form, six enormous wings opened on his back while a fiery halo burnt hotter than the sun. Crimson eyes filled with contempt and hate stared down the assassin and his hostage as golden fire was building in his hands.
"You dare to threaten my daughter, you lowly scum?!" His demonic voice boomed so powerful that the walls that still stood threatened to come down.
"Dad, he has an innocent hostage!" Charlie intervened, trying to calm her furious father. She was scared, as she was aware of how powerful Lucifer Morningstar could become. But to no avail.
"I DON'T GIVE A FUCK! HE DIES!". To say that the King of Hell was angry would be an understatement, as the golden fire increased in volume and ferocity.
"Hey, my dad is there!" Loona snarled as he stood in front of Lucifer, heedless of the fact that she could be incinerated.
"Oh yes daddy, harder!". Blitz's voice echoed through the hall, capitalising everyone's attention. The only one who wasn't weirded out was Angel Dust, suddenly in his element.
Wicken looked at the imp, unsure, while Blitz was looking ecstatic, despite the fact that his face was turning purple from the lack of oxygen.
"Do you have a death wish, imp?" he hissed, strengthening his choke hold.
"Bitch, I might. But being put down by a goddamn legend like you…is more than enough for me!" The imp wheezed as he struggled to talk, as his eyes were squarely on the killer, filled with serious determination.
Wicken looked again at Blitz, and Charlie read in his eyes something different from the coldness and ruthlessness that were accompanying him before. Was it sadness? Understanding ? Charlie wasn't really sure, and a part of her feared that her habit of seeing the good in anyone was playing games with her. Vaggie seemed to have read her mind and put a hand on her shoulder, lightly squeezing it in order to comfort her.
"Nah, you don't get to be so lucky" Wicken murmured, releasing Blitz, who fell to the ground, coughing. "Christ on a stick, your legs are strong. I don't think my dick is gonna stop being hard for hours" Blitz said, his voice still hoarse from being choked almost to death.
"Dad, please, stop" Loona pleaded while helping her dad on his feet.
"Sorry imp, not my type, but I appreciate your moxie" Wicken retorted with a half smile.
"Ha, I appreciate my Moxxie too…don't tell him I said that, I hate complimenting him" Blitz answered, ignoring the confused looks he was receiving.
Vaggie, increasingly frustrated by the fact that the imp was taking the situation less seriously than he should have, materialised her spear and pointed it towards Wicken's neck.
"You talk, now!" the fallen angel shouted. She was sick and tired of seeing him without any fear in his eyes, although she couldn't understand why.
"Look, if it is because I called you fuckdoll, know that I was complimenting you. You're hot and fight better than most of the fuckers down here".
"I don't give two fucks of what you think of me, tell me who sent you or I chop you like a tree!" Vaggie was almost hysterical, but unfortunately Wicken didn't seem all that threatened.
"You are bad at this, you know? Should take lessons of intimidation". Vaggie was on the verge of simply stabbing him when she was lightly pushed aside from Lucifer.
"You know who I am and what I am capable of, talk now or the suffering of hellish fire would sound like a pleasant bath compared to what I'm gonna do to you". Lucifer used a calm voice, but everyone's skin crawled after what he said, a terrible aura emanating from the King of Hell.
"Oh yeah, Hell's greatest disappointment? Go ahead! Make. My. Day." The assassin growled, once again impervious from the intimidation.
"Well, if you insist…". Lucifer raised his hand, engulfed in golden fire, ready to release his might on the assassin when he felt a delicate but firm hand grabbing his wrist. Charlie was staying there with a determined look while stopping his attack.
"Charlie, he tried to kill you and your friends, and he will not likely talk. At this point, the longer he stays alive the more is a danger for you all!"
"I know Dad, but I still want to know". Then, Charlie glanced at Vaggie. "Vaggie, Mr. Blitz, would you kindly follow me? I'd like to talk to you shortly. Dad, can I trust the assassin to you?"
Lucifer stared dumbfounded at his daughter, then nodded. "Ok sweetie". He went back to watch over Wicken as Vaggie and Blitz followed Charlie near the barkeep, which was out of hearshot.
"Sweet, you have alcohol! I could take a bottle of whiskey or two, my throat is killing me!" and, without waiting for permission, Blitz climbed the shelf and grabbed a bottle, starting to drink it without even using a glass.
Charlie sat on a stool, sighing. "How do we go at this? Clearly intimidation is the wrong way, that assassin is too cold-blooded too care".
"I don't even understand why you still want to question him, Hon. He won't talk no matter what, nothing we can say or do to him will change that".
"Captain Stabbinator here is right, princess, dude is the baddest of badasses, snarling at him won't do the job. You either find his weak spot, if he has one, or you simply kill him while you have him where you want him"
Charlie looked at Blitz while he was gourging on the whiskey like it was water. "Why did he let go of you? He could have killed you any second'' the princess questioned. Blitz looked at Charlie, eyes a little out of focus. "The fuck do I know, probably my badassery impressed him!" he laughed it up as he threw the empty bottle behind him. Charlie, however, shook her head.
"No, it's not just that. It was like…when you said you did wanna die, he let go of you like…like he was pitying you. Why do you want to die, by the way? It doesn't seem a very healthy thought".
"It's not that I wanna die, but I'm not afraid of it. Two entirely different concepts. Probably dude there saw my willingness to die as a cheap way to leave my empty and sad life behind and thought that sparing me was actually a punishment. Or I'm reading into it too much because the whiskey is starting to get into the system".
"You did drink an entire bottle of whiskey in one go. Impressive, by the way" Vaggie pointed out, a half smile on her face. She was starting to like the imp.
"Eh, that's nothing, there is this one time in which I outdrank queen Bee herself! So princess, cleared any thoughts?". Charlie smiled at the imp.
"You know what, Mr. Blitz? Maybe I did! Let's get back to it". She stood up from the stool and grabbed it, making her way to the prisoner, who was looked over by her dad and the hellhound.
"Make space, please". Charlie put down the stool and sat, looking Wicken straight in the eyes. In the corner of the eye she saw Vaggie equipping her spear once again and smiled a little.
"Look Princess, if you are trying to be baddest cop, save it, if your dad has failed, what chances do you think you have?" Wicken commented. Charlie ignored him and took a deep breath: this wasn't going to be easy.
"Why do you want to die?"
And that is the end of Chapter 2, hope you like it! I'm trying to keep Helluva Boss characters' appearances to a minimum, but Blitz had to appear, since he is my favourite. They won't be heavily involved in the story, though it might not be the last time they appear. As usual, like and comment, I'd like to have feedbacks on the story. If youeverare able to read, since Fanfiction isn't working the best right now, since stories sometimes do not appear in the feed and doesn't send e-mail notifications. Anyway, enjoy!
