Third chapter, and it is wildly different from when I started writing it. Then again I suppose that can be said for the entirety of this story. Started as one thing and slowly evolved into something entirely different.
Oh well.
The day of the meeting had arrived and just like last time. Somehow I had the misfortune of getting stuck with roll call. At least this time I had a hyperactive partner keeping me company. He offered to help keep tally, but in approximately 4 minutes and 38 seconds he voiced his boredom. He flopped to the ground next to me and wrapped his tail around my waist. "Well we can play our usual game while waiting for the others." He groaned and nodded. It was a really simple game, I would give him the questions to a crossword and he would answer it. At first he'd spend up to an hour silently contemplating even the most basic of words. It was pretty funny seeing his adorable face ruffle in confusion. So it was a win for the both of us.
"6 letters, the antonym for cheerful." He spoke without missing a beat. "Celebi." I side eyed his smugly grinning face. "Heh~" I used my free hand to ruffle the top of his head with just a touch more force than I needed. "Kidding! Kidding! It's dreary."
True enough it fits perfectly. "OK, you got that one pretty quickly, let's try a harder one then… A nine letter word to describe, a deep seated resentment." Once again he failed to miss a beat, "Cresselia." His voice didn't carry that same playfulness when he suggested my name last question. I eyed him cautiously, "Do you REALLY want me to write that down?" He shuddered at the thought and started counting out a bunch of words in his fingers. While he was busy thinking it made me wonder, he usually had someone's name in mind the second I gave him the definition and the letters. With alarming accuracy too. More concerningly he only ever gave those kind of answers for the negative words. Azelf and I were just about the only exceptions to that.
"Rancorous!" Correct again. I paused before I gave him the next word. "Hey Mew, you ever want to talk about some of these answers you've been giving me?" He tilted his head in mock confusion. "Well, I guess Darkrai is less dreary than he usually is, but honestly it's not exactly easy to tell."
"I'm serious." He was quiet. Something I had come to understand meant he was upset. "Maybe later…" I gave him a curt nod and hoped we could return to the crossword, if he wanted to vent this way I wasn't going to stop him. A couple more rounds went by where he made even more comparisons. Some of which were far more favorable than others. Though I could tell he was struggling far more to attribute the positive ones to anyone.
"Alright last one, a 5 letter word for a tired, weary feeling." We both quietly looked at each other and he brought up what I would never say aloud. "I think this crossword is mocking us." I quietly filled in the spot for bored and quietly tucked the demeaning crossword away.
"Think Mesprit still wants our help?" Mew perked up instantly, "She hasn't shared anything with you? Cause I've just been chilling with Azzy these past couple of months. Which, don't get me wrong, is pretty cool, but she's also kind of a mess." "Yeah, that sounds about in line with how Uxie has been doing lately." He's opened up a bit more to me, but that mostly had to do with letting me touch his books without needing him to hand them over. He was ridiculously protective of those things. "So… a whole lot of nothing?" I nodded. "Mesprit is gonna be pissed to hear that." Yeah, then again she'd probably get over it as soon as she laid out the plans she put together.
Perhaps unsurprisingly she was the first proper guest to arrive. The sight was an unsettling one. Mesprit looked like she hadn't slept at all since I told her to take that day to herself. She laid on her back next to me staring emptily at the sky. Mew spoke up, "You uh… doing OK?" She turned her head to the both of us staring vacantly. It felt like her soul had been forced out of her body and this hollowed out husk was all that remained. "Hey Mesprit? There any chance your powers work on yourself?" Mew inquired/joked and Mesprit just shook her head. Eventually she broke her stare and went back to gazing at the cloudy sky. Mew shivered and I could feel his tail tighten around my waist. He was just as disturbed by this change in Mesprit as I was.
She stopped responding to us entirely when she stopped staring at us. While it was a little reassuring to know we were both safe. I couldn't help but feel we were moments away from setting her off. Mew felt similar as he kept shaking, refusing to take his eyes off her. I kept one hand on Mew's head. That was usually enough to assure him that I would keep him safe. Thankfully I felt his body relax and his head shifted away from Mesprit.
Mesprit kept her focus on the cloudy sky. Even when everyone began arriving she never shifted her focus. I honestly thought maybe seeing Suicune and Raikou being so lovely dovey would draw her attention. No dice, she was somewhere else entirely. She remained that way 19 minutes and 13 seconds, until someone she wanted to speak with arrived.
She shifted her focus in one direction. Maintaining her soulless gaze until the unlucky soul arrived. "Greetings Celebi. Greetings Mew." Rather obviously Uxie was what grabbed her attention. "Hey bookworm. I think she wants a word with you." I said gesturing to the currently emotionless empath. "I see…" He didn't look happy about that, he fidgeted nervously and made no effort to approach her. She sat up and floated to greet him. "Hey…been awhile…" She sounded completely drained. "Indeed it has been… Was there something I can do for you?" She placed a paw to her chin and nodded. "It cool if we talked somewhere private?" She motioned to the trees. Naturally Mew couldn't resist teasing them over what it looked like she was doing, "Aw, you gonna confess your love for him?" Mespirt's vacant eyes twitched in annoyance and in an instant she was glaring down at Mew. In fact had Uxie's eyes been open his expression would definitely have mirrored Mesprit. He shivered and wisely looked away. They maintained their glares up until I shooed them away. They left for their private talk without any further interruptions.
"So do you really think that's what she wants to talk about?" He shrugged, "Probably not. I mean if she really was in love with him then trying to pair him up with Azzy all these years would have been like torture to her. Even if it was to make them happy." It added up to a degree. For her sake I hope that isn't the case. He closed his eyes. He was either falling asleep or thinking of how to put his current thoughts into words. Well I wasn't going to interrupt him, I still had attendance to keep track of. So far about 2/3rds of us had arrived. Wouldn't be that much longer, then Mew can show me that 'super special inclusion' he apparently talked Arceus into bringing for all his good behavior.
"Beep." That infernal, irritating beep tore the both of us away from our thoughts. Those beeping golems of all things were brought back. Was there even a reason Arceus kept bringing these things along? They never did anything, never talked to anyone, all they ever did was that incessant beeping. "Beep." Case and point. She had to think it was funny watching us trying to talk to these things. "Hey Cel, pay close attention. I figured out how to talk to these guys." He floated up to the golems, his tail slowly uncoiling from around me, and took a deep breath. "Beep." The trio's eyes flashed in different patterns and I could hardly believe THIS was what Mew was attempting. Nevertheless the flashing dots came to a stop and the golems 'spoke' again. "Boop."
"Boop." Mew repeated, grinning widely. The golems once again flashed various patterns across their eyes. This wound up becoming a feedback loop where Mew would happily repeat back to the golems whatever noise they made. I was stifling my giggles at his antics. Honestly I was either driven mad by the boredom or his act really was hysterical. As the bit went on he started pretending the golems were sharing intimate details about their lives with him. "Ah, beep beep, buddy. I'm sure she actually loves you~" Regice actually took a step back and looked like it was fidgeting nervously.
I fell on my back at that point, this was too much for me. "Ahahahaha." The beeping ceased entirely at that point or I just couldn't hear it anymore. A full minute and 12 seconds had gone by and I had recovered enough to start breathing normally again. I opened my eyes and the trio were gone only Mew was there floating above me.
I started laughing again, just the sight of him was too much for me to handle right now.
He was grinning with that same stupid smile I had come to love so much. "See Cel? I told you I knew how to talk to them." I didn't give him a verbal response. I simply pulled him close to me. As long as he stayed by my side, I suppose the tedious assignments Arceus gives me aren't that monotonous.
These two are a bit of a departure from the Lake Trio drama and were initially just going to be an opening paragraph to the chapter. You can see how that turned out.
Ah well I enjoyed writing for these two. So with that said leave a review and have a good day.
