Summary:

When the Grangers decided to close up their big city dentistry in London and move to the quiet countryside of Kensington and Chelsea, they never expected their lives to change as much as they did. Nestled in their quaint yet elegant cottage surrounded by lush greenery and a babbling brook, Emma and Dan Granger had hoped for a slower pace of life away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Little did they know that a celestial event would soon disrupt their tranquil existence beyond their wildest imagination.

Prologue

Willowbrook Cottage ~ Granger's Residence | September 19, 1979 | Approx. 7PM

One stormy night, as lightning streaked across the sky and thunder rumbled in the distance, Dan and Emma enjoyed tea from their cozy kitchen. They never used to enjoy the rain due to the dreary atmosphere it provided in the city, but rain in the country gave them a sense of calm and peace that they had always longed for. A shimmering rainbow bridge materialized just beyond their backyard as they enjoyed their tea while gazing out the window.

"Dan, did you see that? What on earth... or rather, in the heavens is that?" Emma exclaimed as she stood out of the glass for a better look.

"I-I don't know, Emma. It looks like... like a rainbow. But it can't be, not at this hour, and surely not in this weather."

"That is truly not like any rainbow I have ever seen. It seems to be shimmering in the moonlight."

"There's got to be a logical explanation for this. It could be a lunar rainbow, but those are as rare as finding a four-leaf clover in an Irish field. "

Dan removed his glasses to clean the lenses with the hem of his Henley shirt as if the rainbow resulted from his poor vision.

"Logical or not, we should check it out. What if it's some kind of... I don't know, cosmic phenomenon? We could be featured on the telly!"

Dan sighed in exasperation at his wife's eagerness for mystery and adventure. "Alright, but let's be cautious. We don't know what we're dealing with here."

Emma and Dan cautiously went into their backyard to investigate the brightly colored bridge, exchanging nervous glances as they stepped closer.

"Do you feel that, Emma? The air..." There was a distinct crackling of energy in the air the closer they got to the bridge. As they reach the end of the bridge, they find a golden basket covered in a periwinkle blanket that seems to shimmer with an ethereal glow. As Emma reached for the blanket, she gasped at its contents.

"Oh my goodness, Dan, look! It's a child; she's... she's just a baby."

Her excitement about the prospect of an adventure waned slightly at the sight of the baby girl. A mix of worry and compassion encompassed her thoughts. They tried for years to have a child of their own. Still, after exhausting all of their medical options and most of their money, they decided to sell their practice and retire early for a much-needed break from the harsh realities of life and the expectations of society in the city. Emma knew this baby in the basket could finally be her chance to be a mom. Dan knew they would be taking in the baby without looking at his wife, whether he agreed or not.

"Babies don't just fall out of the sky, Emma." Dan shook his head and sighed in expectation of what was to come.

"I know, but then where did she come from?"

"I don't know, but she must have parents."

"Well, if she does, they surely are not from around here." Emma's tone was firm and passionate as she spoke about the parentage of the lost baby girl.

"Emma, my love, we can't keep her. We need to notify the authorities that we found her and -" Emma cut him off before he could finish his thought.

"We didn't find her, Dan. She found us, and we are going to keep her." She gave him a small smile, and although he was unsure, he knew it was a losing battle, so he gave her a tentative smile back.

Emma tucked her hair behind her ear and reached toward the baby, her heart warmed by an instinctive longing. She picked up the baby and wrapped her in the periwinkle blanket. Dan hesitated only briefly before he gently lifted the basket. As soon as his hand closed around the intricately woven handle, the rainbow bridge disappeared in all its shimmer. The Grangers look at one another in wonderment and confusion. They carefully carry the baby and the basket back to their cottage, their minds buzzing with questions and their hearts filled with a strange mix of fear, curiosity, and, most of all, love.

Little did they realize that in that fateful moment, they had unwittingly welcomed into their lives a child with an untold destiny – a bridge between worlds whose true identity would soon be revealed in ways they could scarcely imagine.
