After a pause, I continued with my explanation:
"It could be, I don't know. I analyzed simulations with AI using my own venom, but the changes it makes to the human body are so extreme that applying it would destroy the vampire's body if used. I imagine that in an analysis with the original source, a reconstruction could be done using the changes between the original venom and the one we have in our bodies as references. But my expertise is in technology, not medicine. The only human doctor I knew who was an expert in our species unfortunately died, and the other scientist, an evil vampire, who knew about it, I had to eliminate him because he had other plans. So, I need to find an experienced vampire doctor that may help, because this seems to be out of my expertise. I think I may have a candidate, but I need to find the sample for the cure first."
I took out Dr. Petrov's papers and the USB drive where I had the necessary data. "I have the papers from the deceased doctor, and he was very close to achieving something, maybe."
We discussed the issue, and Anastasia told me about her experience with Darius, the experiments with humans, his feeding techniques, the theories she had about humans and gifts, and finally her personal experiences with him. I could see out of the corner of my eye how Nacho smirked, and I continued with my explanation:
"With the original source, not only could a cure be possible, but there could be other possibilities, such as altering the vampire's metabolism so that they wouldn't need to drink human blood!"
Finally, I told them that I had been monitoring them, and how during my journey I met Nacho, who was also on his own journey. We both made amends, and Nacho had been contemplating the situation for a long time.
Nacho had helped me in my travels, but I wished for him to return to his family. Although I didn't give them details about how the "Baba Yaga" had warned us to come here, I told them how we followed the movements of the Egyptian coven and how we decided to act, arriving just in time for the rescue.
"Anastasia," I paused, "Do you know why Darius would keep this so secret? What do you know about him and this book?"
She shrugged and only mentioned that he probably didn't want to get into trouble with the Volturi, and she seemed to have no idea about this book; he had never mentioned it to her. Her relationship with him was purely romantic, not scientific.
"I'm sorry, Gonzalo, that's all I know." She looked at me, seeming frustrated that she couldn't help more. Nacho made every effort not to laugh or make another inappropriate comment, but he was aware that the "Luise" bomb could go off if he dared.
"Well, I think I have the information I need anyway, don't worry," I tried to reassure her so she wouldn't feel bad.
"Are you leaving already?" She asked me.
I looked at the horizon, sad, and said, "They are on my trail, and I can't stop, not until this is done."
As we avoided looking at each other, Tomás arrived cheerfully and handed Anastasia the diary with a doll. "Like I said, I managed to rescue your diary! And I had a gift for you, from both me and Amalia. I also save it before they bury us alive! Imagine how crazy she would become if she didn't have someone else to talk to besides me." He laughed.
"What is this doll?" she asked. Anastasia, as a nomad, was not very familiar with the modern world, much less with toys of this era.
"Barbie, miss! Look, I put your clothes on her."
"How kind of you, thank you very much!" She thanked him and seemed quite touched by the gesture.
The plastic doll wore the same sweatshirt and pants as her, and Tomás had painted its eyes with a golden amber tone, representing her transformation. I realized how much he had won the hearts of both Amalia and Tomás. She also seemed very happy in her new coven, which made me very happy.
"Hahaha, it's mini Anastasia! Don't mess around, they look identical!" Nacho laughed, looking at her and then at the doll. I thought to myself, "My dear cousin really has a point, it's as if the creator had seen Anastasia before creating the famous doll."
I started to gather their things and said goodbye to Amalia and Tomás. I gave Nacho one last hug, still thinking about the pact we had made:
"Stay, cousin, you need it, God bless you."
""Bastard, you better return to fix this, little snitch. This is your home." he said, complaining about my mention of Luise to Tomás; I knew he wouldn't leave me alone until I told him everything. "This is your home," he finally finished, emphasizing the secret pact we had before coming here.
Anastasia accompanied me a few more kilometers ahead and showed me her diary.
I read the name and her last name: "Vinogradova. I didn't know that was your last name."
"Now you know, you know my first and last name, just like I knew yours."
We heard Tomás whisper behind Nacho, "I still want to know who Luise is."
After I finally said goodbye to everyone. Anastasia and I shared one last hug, and I could feel once again her scent and her delicate skin. Her embrace emitted a tenderness and warmth that I had never felt before. I put on my backpack, and looking ahead, and reflecting on what was coming, I finally said:
"I don't promise anything; it's all in God's hands now. But if I manage to complete this mission, I'll come around here. Don't wait for me. If you continue searching for true love, don't wait for me. Just follow your heart. Promise?"
"Okay, goodbye, Gonzalo." She nodded, with a hint of frustration.
"Goodbye, Anastasia, and take care of my idiot cousins for me." I tried to smile, preparing for what's to come.
"I will," she said, very hesitantly.
So without looking back, I set off on the journey; now I had to head to the Judean Desert and extract what would be the raw material for the cure. My other challenge was to find a way to contact that doctor who would be key to creating the serum. I had all the arsenal I needed to continue; I just hoped Anastasia and the others were okay. I regretted giving them so much information, but I hoped that perhaps Anastasia knew some extra information that could be helpful.
I left the place and set off for the Middle East, bypassing the east coast of the African continent. There I was able to hunt for the first time a hyena, and some other wild animals; I always made sure to hunt animals that were not in danger of extinction. Although it is ethical not to kill humans, I believe it is also valid to care about natural life and not endanger other animals that may be at risk of extinction.
I passed through several towns in Ethiopia. This nation was the homeland of Amalia, a culture that seemed to be very ancient; this place was formerly called the region of Nubia. There I took the liberty to take a break, and connecting with some devices, I began to train my new meditation ability and navigated to see how to infiltrate the network of the vampire doctor and find out more about him.
In Darius's book, there were also vague mentions of this place, and the book of "Enoch"; that motivated me to take a look around here and find some clues that could bring me closer to the exact location of the cave, or tunnel, whatever is inside that place, in the Judean Desert.
Walking through some places, I came across some books at a fair. A man who seemed to be preaching gave me one of the books, and precisely there I came across the name "Enoch."
As I read its pages, I came across topics about angels or "watchers" and the concept of the so-called "Nephilim."
"Why do these concepts seem so familiar to me?" I thought; it was as if I had already heard this whole story before; I was experiencing déjà vu.
And as I read, I came across some rather peculiar messages:
"And the Watchers, the sons of heaven, saw them and desired them, and said to one another: Let us go and choose wives from among the daughters of men and beget children."
"They became pregnant by them and bore giants, who were three thousand cubits tall, who were born upon the earth and according to their infancy grew up."
I thought, "Who were the Watchers? And the Nephilim or giants?" I first thought of vampires and hybrids. Then I continued reading:
"Then the giants turned against humans to kill and devour them;"
"Why have you abandoned the high, holy, and eternal heaven, and lain with women, and defiled yourselves with the daughters of men, and taken wives, like the sons of the earth, and begotten giants?"
It really seemed to me that the metaphor was quite clear. Dr. Petrov had mentioned it to me, but it seemed that only Joham and he had experience in that phenomenon, but upon reading more carefully the word:
"They turned to kill them and devour them."
I had the feeling that they were more savage. Of course, Joham's daughters had been instructed to feed on humans, but it was a choice, and it seemed that the so-called "Watchers" had the task of caring for humans but mixed with them and taught them "profane or dark arts"; then these had been punished by God and his angels; the "Watchers" were basically fallen angels. I continued reading:
"And now, the giants who have been born of the spirits and of the flesh, they will be called evil spirits on the earth, and on the earth will be their dwelling."
Then, I thought, "Wait a moment. The giants are the ones who feed on humans, not the Watchers. The Watchers seem to have a more spiritual or immaterial origin." I stayed still looking at the ceiling of the small room of the abandoned house where I was.
"And if the vampire venom is somehow related to the Watchers, and the Nephilim are the vampires?"
Darius seemed really interested in coming here, and he didn't succeed. I read the next passage:
"Why is this land blessed and full of trees, and in the middle are these cursed ravines? Then Sariel, the Watcher and the holy one, who was with me, answered and said: This cursed ravine is for those who are cursed forever; there all the cursed ones will be gathered who with their mouths utter indecent words against the Lord and offend his Glory, there they will be gathered, and there will be the place of their judgment."
The angels or watchers had been punished and banished in some way, but the message there said that the "Nephilim" had been "purged" in a great flood, very similar to Noah's ark. "Was the flood literal or is it something metaphorical? Has it already happened or is it metaphorically speaking of something that will happen?"
As my head spun, I set the book aside, and it fell open on a small table. I began to investigate more about the doctor and delved into the network of the hospital where he worked. I found the hospital's data, and after finding different addresses, I managed to access the local network of his home. Little by little, I delved deeper into the computers and other electronic devices of each member of his family; it was clearly a coven of vampires.
I extracted emails, listened to conversations, hacked home appliances with internet access, and used them to spy; I had to extract all possible information. At one point, a light blinded me, and I lost the connection; I looked to the side, and the moonlight had reflected off a broken mirror and hit me in the eye. Then I realized that a beam of light was pointing at the book, and I approached to see the passage it was pointing to:
"No being of flesh is allowed to touch this aromatic tree until the great judgment when He will avenge everything and bring all things to their conclusion forever, but then it will be given to the righteous and the humble."
"Hmm..." I thought. "The cure?" My head was spinning, and I went out to get some fresh air; I came across a church in the city. I entered to offer my prayers and noticed a framed scroll on a counter. It was another passage from the Book of Enoch.
I had a hunch, and used the same algorithms I had used to decode Darius's book and Father Rafael's information. My face contorted when I realized that they were showing me a series of numbers, which seemed to use constellations as a reference to define a geographical location. Taking a breath and searching for a way to transform that information, I found a way to correlate it with modern geographical coordinates, and it was precisely what I needed; it was a moment of "Eureka!"
I now had two clear things: the exact point of the cave where the raw material for the cure is located, and the name of the doctor, my last hope to create the serum that would free our species from the thirst for blood:
"Doctor Carlisle Cullen."
