Note - I know the first chapter was about Paul asking Charlie for permission to ask Bella on date. But I couldn't help it! As I was writing that one, the idea for this one popped up and I had to write it lol. Enjoy!
Edward Cullen stood on the front porch of the Swan residence, his usually composed demeanor showing subtle signs of anxiety. The old wooden boards creaked under his weight, adding to the tension that seemed to hang in the evening air. His mind raced through countless scenarios, each more daunting than the last. He adjusted the collar of his shirt, a rare sign of nervousness, and took a deep breath. This was a moment he had dreaded but knew he had to face.
Inside, Charlie Swan sat in his favourite armchair, a baseball game playing on the television. The comforting hum of the broadcast filled the room, masking the sound of Edward's approach. Charlie was relaxed, his focus on the game, blissfully unaware of the storm about to brew in his living room.
Edward knocked gently on the door, and Charlie looked up, surprised. He hadn't expected any visitors tonight. With a grunt, he pushed himself up from the chair and walked to the door, opening it to find Edward standing there.
"Edward," Charlie said, his tone neutral but with a hint of curiosity. "What brings you here this evening?"
"Good evening, Charlie," Edward replied, his voice calm despite his internal turmoil. "I was hoping we could have a conversation. It's important."
Charlie frowned slightly but stepped aside to let Edward in. "Alright, come on in. Let's have a talk."
Edward entered the house, glancing around the familiar surroundings. The living room was cozy, filled with personal touches that spoke of Charlie and Bella's life together. Edward took a seat on the couch, while Charlie settled back into his armchair, turning off the TV to give Edward his full attention.
"So, what's on your mind?" Charlie asked, leaning back and crossing his arms over his chest.
Edward took a moment to gather his thoughts, his eyes meeting Charlie's with a mix of determination and apprehension. "Charlie, I want to ask for your permission to marry Bella."
The room fell into a heavy silence, the weight of Edward's words hanging in the air. Charlie's expression shifted from curiosity to shock, and then to something more guarded. He took a deep breath, trying to process what he had just heard.
"Edward," Charlie began slowly, his voice steady but firm. "I appreciate you coming to me and asking for my permission. But I have to tell you, my answer is no."
Edward felt a pang of disappointment but remained composed. "May I ask why, Charlie?"
Charlie leaned forward, his eyes narrowing slightly as he spoke. "Bella is still young, Edward. She has her whole life ahead of her. I know she cares about you, but I don't think she's ready for something as serious as marriage. She's barely out of high school. She needs time to grow, to experience life, to figure out who she is and what she wants."
Edward nodded, understanding Charlie's concerns. "I understand your point of view, Charlie. But I want you to know that I love Bella deeply. I would never do anything to harm her. I want to spend my life making her happy."
Charlie sighed, his stern expression softening just a bit. "I don't doubt that you care for her, Edward. But loving someone means understanding what's best for them. And right now, I don't think marrying you is what's best for Bella."
Unbeknownst to both men, Bella stood at the top of the stairs, having heard every word of their conversation. She had been heading downstairs to get a glass of water when she overheard Edward's request and had stopped, her heart pounding in her chest. Listening to Charlie's response, she felt a rush of conflicting emotions—relief, gratitude, and a hint of sadness.
She knew her father was right. As much as she loved Edward and wanted to spend her life with him, she also understood that she was still young and had much to learn and experience. Charlie's protective instincts were spot on, and she was thankful for his wisdom and honesty.
Edward, unaware of Bella's presence, continued to plead his case. "Charlie, I respect your decision, but I want you to know that Bella and I have thought long and hard about this. We're committed to each other, and we believe this is the right step for us."
Charlie shook his head, a sad but resolute look in his eyes. "Edward, my answer remains the same. I can't give you my blessing. I just want Bella to have the chance to live her life without any regrets."
Edward nodded, accepting Charlie's decision, even though it pained him. "Thank you for your honesty, Charlie. I respect your wishes."
Charlie stood up, signaling the end of the conversation. "I hope you understand, Edward. I'm just looking out for my daughter."
Edward rose from the couch, a respectful nod to Charlie. "I do understand. And I appreciate how much you care about Bella."
With that, Edward left the house, the door closing softly behind him. Bella waited a few moments, her heart still racing, before making her way downstairs. She found Charlie back in his armchair, the TV turned back on, though the volume was low.
"Dad," Bella said softly, causing Charlie to look up.
"Bella," he responded, a hint of surprise in his voice. "I didn't know you were up."
She walked over and sat on the edge of the couch, facing her father. "I heard what you said to Edward."
Charlie looked a bit uncomfortable but didn't shy away. "I see."
Bella reached out and took his hand, her eyes filled with gratitude. "Thank you, Dad. For looking out for me. I know you only want what's best."
Charlie squeezed her hand, his expression softening. "I just want you to be happy, Bells. And to make sure you're ready for whatever you decide to do."
Bella nodded, feeling a sense of peace settle over her. "I know. And I appreciate it more than you can imagine."
They sat there in silence for a moment, the bond between father and daughter stronger than ever. Charlie had always been her rock, and tonight, she felt more connected to him than ever before. She knew Edward would understand, and together, they would navigate whatever came next.
As the night grew darker and the stars twinkled outside, Bella felt a sense of clarity. She had a lifetime ahead of her, and with the support of the people she loved, she knew she could face any challenge that came her way.
