Chapter 1: Dare to play (1):
Nancy's POV:
Okay, here's the thing, I'm not a superhero, or a secret agent, or an archaeologist. I'm Nancy Drew. I was the best detective in River Heights... but now...
"Dad, why do we have to move," I asked.
"I got transferred."
"Can you even get transferred if you're a criminal defense attorney?"
"I don't see why not," says my Dad.
We're moving from River Heights to Riverdale. I gotta be honest, it sounds like a lateral move to me.
"This is gonna stink," I said.
"Look at it this way," says my Dad, "by coincidence, all your friends moved there."
It would be nice to see them again. George Fan. Yes, she's a girl. She's got this gothic thing going on. Bess Marvin. She believes in the supernatural. Ned Nickerson... my ex. It would be cool to see the old crew again. Then I heard something. It was just my brother, Shaun's snoring. Well, better get used to life in Riverdale. Riverdale sounds like a comic book and I'm more into real books then comic books.
. . .
We then arrived in our new home.
"So, this where we're gonna live from now on," asks Shaun.
"Looks like it," I said. There was a knock on the door, and it was George, Bess, and Ned.
"Hey," they all said.
"It's so good to see you guys again," I said.
"I thought it was weird when we all conveniently moved here," says Ned, "and now it's complete."
"We missed you," says George.
"Sometimes to weird levels," says Bess, "don't ask."
"Well, we're unpacking," I said.
"But you're all free to catch up," says my Dad.
"We know where to go," says Ned.
. . .
They took me to this place called Pop Tate's.
"So, you're the famous Nancy Drew," says Pop, "I hear you're quite the detective."
"I have helped the police from time to time," I said.
"Please, she's the Batman of River Heights," says George.
"The Batwoman," says Bess.
"Wait, was Batwoman a detective," asks Ned.
Bess thinks about it. "I'll get back to you on that."
"So, what will it be," asks Pop.
"You still eat meat, right," asks Ned.
"Yeah," I said.
"Burgers all around," says Ned.
"And don't forget the shakes," says Bess, "Nancy has to try your shakes."
"Got it," says Pop. He then leaves to get our orders.
"Hey Nancy, maybe you can introduce your detective skills to Riverdale," suggests George.
That was an interesting idea, but I'm not sure. "Right now, I'd like to solve the mystery of how you guys have been doing. Ned, you met anyone?"
"Well, actually..."
"Hey, Ned!" Then a guy came up.
"Nancy, meet my boyfriend, Kevin Keller."
"Well, there's something you didn't even imply back home," I said.
"Wait, Nancy? As in Nancy Drew," asks Kevin, "Ned's talked about you so much, I've been wanting to meet you."
"And it's nice to meet you too, Kevin," I said, "so, Ned Nickerson and Kevin Keller?"
"Yeah, Riverdale's pretty big on alliterations," says George.
"Remind me to introduce you to Archie Andrews and Jughead Jones," says Kevin.
"Right," I said. No one is named Jughead.
. . .
We were on our way back to my house when I saw a blonde girl looking at us. "Hey, who's that blonde girl," I asked.
"What blonde girl," asks Ned. She was gone. But I did see a mailbox with a strange name on it... 'The Spellmans'.
. . .
I told my Dad and Brother about the day I had.
"Sounds boring compared to what you did back home," says Shaun, "I mean, you found the stolen Crowley Clock, figured out Mitch killed Jake, and worked with the Hardy Boys."
"Yeah, well, maybe I can use my deductive skills when they're actually needed." I then looked out the window and saw a black cat. The black cat then winks and leaves. Weird.
. . .
The next day, I stepped outside. "You must be the new neighbor," says a redhead who came with a blonde girl. A different blonde. This one has her hair in a ponytail.
"Yeah, I'm Nancy Drew."
"I'm your new neighbor, Archie Andrews and this is my girlfriend, Betty Cooper."
"Betty Cooper," I asked, "has Archie ever told you he loved you."
"Is that any of..." Betty then realizes. "Oh, the movie, 'I Love You, Beth Cooper'!"
"Hey, do you guys know anything about the Spellmans," I asked.
"I don't know," says Archie, "they never leave their house."
"Interesting," I said.
. . .
Shaun and I were walking through the park.
"I don't understand," says a voice. We go to check it out.
"It's true, your bracelet looks like the one I lost," says a red-haired girl.
"I'm sure it was a misunderstanding," says a black-haired girl.
"Hold it," I said, "what's going on here?"
"Veronica Lodge stole my bracelet," says the red-haired girl.
"I would never do such a thing," says Veronica.
I then walked to a guy. "And what is your name?"
"Jason Blossom."
"And what can you tell me about Scarlet here," I asked.
"Cheryl, my twin sister."
"And does she have a bracelet that looks like Miss Lodge's," I asked.
"UUUUUUUUUhhhhhhhhh... she... uuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhh... yes..."
"And where did she get it?"
"From... uuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhh... her boyfriend's cousin's dad's roommate's... okay, you know what, this is ridiculous. It was funny, but I'm done. She's just lying to get Veronica's bracelet. There!"
"Umm... we should go," says Cheryl as she and Jason then leave.
"Thanks, you really saved me there," says Veronica, "how much do I owe you?"
"That's not necessa..." Shaun and I then saw how much she had with her.
"We could use some extra cash," says Shaun.
. . .
"Riverdale sure is an exciting town," I said.
"I think it's like one bad soap opera after another," says Shaun.
"It does seem like they have their own problems," I said.
. . .
The next day, I woke up and heard something. I looked out the window and saw police cars surrounding Archie's house.
. . .
I stepped outside with my Dad and Brother. I walked to Betty. "What's going on," I asked.
"Jason Blossom's been murdered and Archie, somehow, got the blame," says Betty.
