Chapter 12: Batwoman:
Nancy's POV - Flashback:
Ever wonder why I decided to become a detective, well, when I was a kid, I was at the bank with my Dad when suddenly, these creepy clowns came vicious birds came and they were all causing trouble. But then Batman and Robin came and took the clowns down.
"Wow, you're Batman and Robin," I said.
"And this is one heck of a mystery," says Robin.
"It's the Joker, right," I asked.
"Good guess, but while Joker has a sick sense of humor, his clowns usually look comical, these guys look like something from a horror movie," says Batman.
"Then... it has to be the Penguin because of the birds," I said.
"Another possibility," says Batman, "but Penguin wouldn't just use one flock and those are a murder of crows. Isn't that right..." Batman then removes a security guard's mustache. "... Professor Crane?"
It was Jonathon Crane aka the Scarecrow.
"Drat, I was so sure I could make it look like it was either Joker or Penguin," says Crane.
"Wow, how'd he figure that out," I asked.
"He's the world's greatest detective," says Robin.
"Detective."
And that's what inspired me.
Nancy's POV - Present:
One night, I was on my way home. My Dad told me to be cautious because... well, look what happens around here. I then heard something. I decided to take a look and I saw some kind of hideous creature routing through trash. It looked partially undead. I then had to run before that reject from a rated R movie notice me.
. . .
I told the police what I saw.
"So, you saw a monster with a skeletal arm and a skeletal leg," asks the cop.
"Yes," I said.
"It was dark, you probably just thought this guy looked like that," says the cop, "but we are gonna be on the lookout for someone that could be dangerous."
. . .
It was nighttime and I was getting ready for bed. As soon as I got in...
. . .
I woke up and saw that I was in a strange warehouse.
"You're not dreaming."
I looked. It looked like Batman, but had a female voice, which can mean only one thing... Batwoman! She then comes out of the shadows.
"Batwoman," I said, "what's going on?"
"First, you're going to tell me about what you saw," says Batwoman.
"You mean that weird thing," I asked.
"I've been tailing it since it ran from Gotham all the way into your town," says Batwoman, "I need to catch it!"
"I think I saw it going through Reggie Mantle's trash," I said.
"And where does this Reggie Mantle live," asks Batwoman. I then gave her his address. "Thanks." Batwoman then uses knock-out gas on me.
. . .
I woke up and I was in my room. I looked and saw the window was opened, showing it was real.
. . .
The next day, I was at Riverdale High with Ned, George, and Bess and I told them what happened.
"First, Green Arrow and now Batwoman," says Ned, "just wait, you might join the Justice League one day."
"I'm more concerned with that thing she saw," says Bess.
"Maybe it's Death itself," says George.
"One thing's for sure," I said, "Batwoman may know more about this."
Reggie was telling people about a bat monster he saw out his window. He was talking about Batwoman.
. . .
It was at night, and I was on the lookout. Then I saw the monster again and it started breathing on me. Then Batwoman came and fought it, but then it left.
"You okay," asks Batwoman.
"Yeah," I said.
"I'll take you to your house," says Batwoman.
"Okay," I said. Is it just me or does the night seem a lot scarier lately?
. . .
The next day, I was at Pop's, but suddenly, things seemed a lot scarier. I then screamed. I never realized how terrifying rats were.
"Nancy?"
"Don't hurt me," I said. It was Ned, with George and Bess.
"Are you okay," asks George.
"I... I honestly don't know," I said, "ever since that thing breathed on me, I've been afraid of everything! This morning, I screamed when that mysterious black cat showed up because I was worried it would give me bad luck."
"I saw it," says Shaun, "it was embarrassing."
"We need to find Batwoman," says Ned, "you said she took you to a warehouse?"
"Yeah," I said, "but I don't know which one!"
"Can you remember anything," asks Bess.
I tried, but that creature's face was in my head. "Sorry guys," I said.
"I got an idea," says Shaun.
. . .
We made our own Bat-Signal and Batwoman came.
"Oh, I didn't know she was a lesbian," says Bess.
"Good reading," says Batwoman, "but I'm too old for you. Now, what is it?"
"That thing turned me into the Cowardly Lion," I said, while looking around to make sure that thing doesn't show up.
"What is it," asks Ned.
"I don't know," says Batwoman.
"But you know where it came from," I said.
Batwoman then sighs. "Here's the thing, my half-brother was going through... a thing. He was going to unleash acid bombs on Gotham, I managed to stop him, but the result was the creation of that thing, but I still don't know what it is!"
I then started to think. It looked like a mangled... "Scarecrow," I said.
"What," asks Batwoman.
"That thing is the Scarecrow," I said, "that's why this is happening to me, it breaths fear toxin!"
"The Scarecrow," says Batwoman, "of course... wait, maybe if we capture it, we can make an antidote for you."
"Okay," I said.
"Wait, I'll handle it, not only are you just a kid, but you're afraid of your own shadow now," says Batwoman.
She's right, I'm no help.
"What about us," asks Ned, "we didn't get breathed on!"
"Do you guys realize how dangerous this is," asks Batwoman.
"Please, we'd die for Nancy," says George.
"Loyal friends," says Batwoman, "great."
. . .
Shaun and I were at the house. I was worried something would break in.
"Nancy, this is too much," says Shaun, "you have to fight this!"
"You think I like being afraid of everything," I said, "I hope they catch that thing!"
Bess' POV:
We were setting a trap while Batwoman was looking for the Scarebeast and yes, that's what I'm calling him.
"The Scarecrow," says Ned, "hey, you know, seeing Batman and Robin catch the Scarecrow is what inspired Nancy to become a detective."
"Oh yeah, she told me that too," says George.
Batwoman calls us. "So far, I haven't seen him... wait, I see him and... oh no."
Nancy's POV:
Shaun and I were watching movies, but it was hard to find something that wasn't scary. Then the Scarecrow crashed in.
"It's the Scarecrow," says Shaun.
He was approaching us. I was defending Shaun, but then Batwoman came and fights Scarecrow and then takes him down.
. . .
The antidote tastes like mucus, but at least it helps.
"So, why didn't Nancy hide in a closet or something," asks Shaun.
"Because you were in danger," says Batwoman, "her big sister instincts helped fight the fear."
"How do you feel," asks Geroge.
I then kicked Scarecrow. "Much better," I said.
"I'm gonna take him back to Gotham now," says Batwoman, "you might just join the Mystery Analysts of Gotham City one day." Batwoman then drives off in the Batmobile with Scarecrow.
"So, think Scarecrow's gonna stay put," asks Shaun.
"I'm afraid not," I said.
In the next chapter, Nancy meets Sabrina face to face.
