Chapter 38: White Canary:
Nancy's POV:
My Dad, Shaun, and I were watching Teen Beach Movie.
"So, what about the actors," asks Shaun.
"Who cares," I asked, "I just watch it for the... observation."
"Shirtless guys," asks Shaun.
"It's their fault for having their movie on a beach," I said.
Then we all disappeared.
. . .
Now, we're in some weird place.
"Carson Drew! I am Epoch, the new director of the THQ! You have been chosen!"
"For what," asks my Dad.
"To defend the case of this criminal!"
We look and see it's the White Canary.
"The White Canary," I asked, "but she's a member of the Justice League."
"That matters not in the Vanishing Point," says Epoch, "she still committed a crime against time! She broke a fixed point!"
. . .
We then talked to the White Canary.
"So, here's the thing," she says, "there was this guy who was hunting me down."
"Okay," says my Dad, "well, why can't you go with that?"
"Because the guy was hunting me down because I was ruining time." We all looked at her. "Don't ask. Anyway, to lure him in a trap... by messing with a fixed point. The good news is, my plan worked... the bad news is, I got caught by the Time Police because you never mess with a fixed point. To make matters worse I'm pregnant with my wife's child!"
"Wait, what... okay... well... I gotta be honest... it would be hard to show proof you're innocent... because you apparently are... guilty."
"I know," says White Canary.
"But I'm going to try. I just need more information about this case."
"Hey, you guys seem to accept this pretty quickly," says White Canary.
"We've had weird adventures," I said.
"So, let's work on your case," says my Dad.
. . .
"Your Honor," says my Dad, "historical figures of the Jury..." The Jury was composed of Ben Franklin, Sir Lancelot, Harry Houdini, Albert Einstein, Blackbeard, Cleopatra, Joan of Arc, a disco dancer from the 70's, Sigmund Frued, Alexander the Great, Curly Howard, and a caveman. "What proof do we have that she actually tried to mess with a fixed point?" The court then shows an image of White Canary attempting to prevent the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. "That could be... anyone..."
"Hey, Creep that's trying to attack me, I'm going to save Archduke Franz Ferdinand and ruin history! Come and get me! I'm the White Canary by the way!"
"Never mind," says my Dad.
Shaun and I looked at White Canary. "I had to make sure he'd come," says White Canary.
. . .
The Court calls their first witness, Booster Gold... whoever he is.
"White Canary just wanted to travel through time to find something for her wife, Ava's birthday, so I let her borrow my time traveling stuff. Booster Gold is, if nothing else, a romantic... who just also happens to be bad with dates... anyway, the problem is, she kept, making some mistakes... she messes up, but she messes up for the better."
"Your Honor, I would like to question the witness," says my Dad.
"Proceed," says Epoch.
"Buster Gouda..." says my Dad.
"It's Booster Gold, actually."
"Right... did you see anything mistakes the White Canary might have caused?"
"Well, her superhero instincts made her save Abraham Lincoln, but his wife got shot... you know what, maybe I shouldn't say the rest..."
. . .
The court presented exhibit A, the item she used to save the Archduke and all the evidence that says she used it.
. . .
"I don't suppose you can use your detective skills," asks Shaun.
"I could... if it weren't for the fact that she wasn't framed," I said, "she literally did it!"
"I don't know if it could help, but maybe you could find the guy that was stalking her," says Shaun.
"I could."
. . .
I then asked the time criminals what they know.
"I don't belong here," says Per Degaton, "this is an outrage!"
"You were literally going to destroy the Justice Society from ever existing," I said.
"But I failed to do that," says Per Degaton, "do you still remember the Justice Society? Yes! Why? Because they defeated me without even knowing me! See?"
"Look, do you know the guy who tried to kill the White Canary or not," I asked.
"I have no idea," says Per Degaton, "but does it matter?"
"I hope it helps."
"I have some information you could use," says David Clinton aka Chronos, "why don't you learn something about the Director?"
. . .
I snuck into the Director's office. I was taking a look through the files. I then saw something that was shredded.
. . .
I was trying to put it back together. It wasn't easy, but then I got it. I then saw something...
. . .
"Jury declare yellow hair... innocent," asks the Caveman.
"That says guilty," says Curly Howard.
"Oh, guilty. Ugga."
"Then I sentence the White Canary to perish," says Epoch, "oops. I meant prison. My bad."
"Wait," I said, "I have information you should see! Director Epoch, did you, by any chance, visit the Planet Krypton?"
"WWeeellllll... yes, but only to bring in a time criminal!"
"That's true," I said, "but it was on the last day! And you almost prevented Krypton's destruction!"
Everyone gasps.
"I am not the one on trial here," says Epoch.
"Director," I said.
"Fine! Yes, but only to save my own life and I was going to re-destroy it later! Lucky for me, the Fixer took care of that."
"But you still feel guilt for almost ruining time," I said.
"Yes. So, I decided to make sure no one makes the same mistake I did!"
"You're the guy who was chasing me," says White Canary.
"You were going to destroy time like I nearly did," says Epoch, "I should not have made that mistake! I am practically the Lord of Time!" He then realizes. "Yeah, that might be pushing it. I'm just a director of a time organization... since the old director was destroyed by a metal demon."
The agents took him in.
. . .
We talked to the new director. "So, is White Canary off the hook," I asked.
"All you did was expose her attacker," says the new Director, "it doesn't mean she's innocent."
"Right. Didn't think that through," I said.
"All the prisoners have escaped and they're going to ruin time again," says a guard.
"White Canary, tell you what. We'll let you go if you agree to help us catch those prisoners."
"Deal," says White Canary, "I got some legendary friends that can help out, but I got to be careful, because again, I'm pregnant with my wife's child!"
"Right, totally forgot about the unborn child which is actually innocent of the crimes that you did. Okay, case dismissed."
. . .
Now we're back in our living room. "Time is weird," says Shaun.
"No kidding," I said, "now, let's get back to Teen Beach Movie."
In the next chapter, Nancy investigates reports of a dragon.
