"Professor, they went this way," I said, pointing at the runaways. They were running straight towards the beach.
"Ah, very good," the professor turned quickly. "Much obliged, Akari."
I nodded as I jogged towards them. "Professor, you should really be more careful with those pokemon. Someone could get hurt if they got loose in the wrong place."
"Of course my dear, but those pokemon are quite docile, I doubt they'd ever hurt anyone," he said, pointing at them. "Why, they've already stopped running away."
"They're still pokemon, they could cause alot of damage like that, and what if a stronger pokemon were to get attracted by-"
A brilliant light emitted from the sky, and a vortex just like the one above Mount Coronet opened right over the beach, interrupting what I was going to say, and not a second later, a boy fell out from the sky and landed comfortably on the beach, light emanating once more before its brilliance faded from view.
"AHH," I screamed and retreated. The pokemon congregated around the boy and looked down at him, while the professor hurried to his side. The vortex swiftly contracted into nothingness afterwards.
"Goodness, did that young man just fall out of the sky?" he exclaimed. He was so close to the pokemon, but none of them seemed to notice. "Um, are you quite alright?"
There was no response from the boy.
"Um, maybe he's injured," I said, keeping myself a fair distance away. "He did just land on the ground after all. Are we sure he can talk right now?"
Professor Laventon bent down and began to inspect the boy. "Let's see here. He fell all the way down here but I can't see any bruises or anything like that," he mused as he lifted his arms up. "Did you see that bit of light under him as he fell?"
"Yeah, I saw that," I said. "Was something protecting him as he fell?"
"Almost certainly. There is simply no way you could fall from that height and yet be fine," he said, standing back up. The pokemon turned their head at the professor, then looked back. "That said, it's strange he's still unconscious. Perhaps he just needs something galvanizing. Cover your ears, everyone."
I nodded and put my hands over my head.
"Hey, wake up," he shouted. "Wake up! Oh, do wake up!"
After that last shout, I could see him open his eyes groggily.
"Oh goodness, you're awake," the professor said, clapping his hands together. "I was afraid we would have to take you back to camp."
He got up slowly, inching backwards from the professor. "Um, who are you people?"
"I should be asking that to you. You fell out of the sky, you understand. Come now, who even does that." The professor looked him over closely "I must say, your clothing looks a little unusual. Are you from around these parts? Do you have any family or friends around here?"
"No… ummm…," the boy fumbled, clearly unable to answer him properly.
I inched closer, trying not to scare him further. "Professor, I don't think he's comfortable with us right now. We should hold ourselves back a bit."
"Oh, where are my manners? I'm Professor Laventon, the little ones around you are my pokemon, and over there is Akari. But nevermind that, you fell out of the sky. Are you feeling alright?"
The rowlet became particularly excited and eagerly nudged itself at him.
"Uh, yeah I feel fine, thanks for asking," he said, stumbling over his words. He bent down and began to rub the rowlet's head.
"Hey, do you want me to get that off of you," I said, reaching out my hand. But to my shock, the rowlet nuzzled its head into his hand, with no animosity and no hint of fear coming from the boy. "Are you not afraid of them at all?"
He looked at me, puzzled, as the cyndaquill excitedly copied its friend. "Why would I be scared of them," he said, petting it.
I couldn't believe the ease at which he was handling the pokemon. He was completely fearless in the face of those creatures.
"My, my, truly extraordinary," the professor remarked. "I've never seen anyone handle these little ones so well, even though they'd never hurt a fly. In fact, I was just about to-"
At that moment, the pokemon began to scatter. My instincts kicked in, and I dived away from the creatures as they ran around.
"Oh, blast and bother," he exclaimed. "My darling pokemon! Why must you run from me again?! Akari, we have to catch them quickly now!"
"What," I didn't get the chance to react before he dragged me toward them.
"Wait, you three. Waiiiiiit!"
