Wyldstyle and I instantly got instructions from a head robot to carry the new speakers to the Control Room. "See that?" I asked her, excited. "It's working!"
"Yeah, it...it actually is," Wyldstyle said, shocked. I guess she doubted it. I thought it was pretty good. Especially since the Master Builders followed the instructions. Another speaker was made by a machine and dropped on the ground in front of us. Wyldstyle picked up one end while I carried the other. I offered to walk backwards, and she didn't object.
We followed the robots out of the room, in a line, keeping a good, equal distance apart. I stared at the Kragle machine as we walked closer to it. That looks...terrifying. Lord Business is gonna end the world with that? Why? Why does he want the world to be so...so perfect? And why is that machine so terrifying?
"Ow," I said, as I dropped the speaker on my foot. The robots around us all dropped their speakers and stared at us. Their eyes started glowing a deep red. "Who are you two?" one robot asked.
"We are transfers from downstairs," Wyldstyle said in a not very robotic voice.
"Your robot voice sounds an awful lot like a human voice," I said quickly, trying to warn her.
"Give me a break, I have never been a robot before," Wyldstyle replied.
"What do you mean?" I asked quickly. "You have always been a robot!"
The robots pull in closer, their eyes glowing brighter. "What is your robot serial numbers?" he asked. Wyldstyle and I puled closer to each other and stared. This is not what was supposed to happen! It was supposed to go smoothly! What do I do? Something Octan, something Octan, something Octan...
Octan makes music! If these guys work for Octan, they have to know the song on the top of the chart, Everything is Awesome, right? Only one way to find out. Let's hope this doesn't go too badly...
I started beatboxing Everything is Awesome. I spun and waved my hands. "Everything is awesome!" I tried, whispering a little. Please work, please work, please work...
"No way," the first robot said, his eyes turning back to normal, "that is my jam!"
"That is also my jam!" another robot added.
"Everything is awesome! Everything is cool when you're part of a team!" the robots sang terribly. I joined in, trying my best to keep my robot voice. I nudged Wyldstyle for her to join too. "I don't want to sing," she grumbled. The robots prepared to attack again.
"Everything is awesome!" Wyldstyle sang. She has a wonderful singing voice too! She's just perfect! We followed the singing robots until we took a turn out of the room and into a small hall. Inside is two sets of ladders, one on each, opposite side.
We started climbing the ladders. "I thought you didn't like that song?" I asked.
"I don't," Wyldstyle admitted.
"Mhm," I said. "I don't think you're as mean as you act. I think you just put on a tough act."
"What do you mean?" Wyldstyle asked.
"Well, you were all, 'He can't be the special, Vitruvius! This guy, are you kidding me?' I don't think that was the real you, I mean." She was quiet until she came to the top of the stairs. I made it up top after her. "Look, I wanted it to be me, okay?" she said. "I wanted to be The Special. Ever since I heard the Prophecy, I wanted to be the one. I was right there, on top of that construction site, and then...it...it turned out to be you..." She took her disguise off.
I took mine off as well. "That night...in the city, when you told me I was special, and...talented...that was the first time anyone has ever said that to me. And...it made me want to be everything you said I was."
Wyldstyle stared at me for a second. "Lucy," she said suddenly.
"What?" I asked.
"Lucy, that's my name," she explained. L-Lucy? Her name is Lucy? That's...that's a lovely name. A lovely name for a lovely woman. It's beautiful. "I really like that name," I replied.
She smiled. We walked closer and reached for each other's hands. "Hey," Batman said suddenly, startling me and almost knocking me over. "What are you two losers talking about?"
"What?" Lucy asked. "Oh, nothing."
"What are you doing here?" I asked.
"I'd thought I'd help you guys. I let the weird cat thing stall."
I looked out the bars, and searched the area. The shield for the Kragle is still up, but it shouldn't for much longer. Up ahead, above the Kragle, is a window where the robots are keeping guard of the door. "There's Bad Cop," I said, pointing at the window.
"Okay, wait for my signal," Lucy said, turning around. "Good luck, Emmet." She started running off. "Lucy?" I asked. She stopped and turned around. "I guess this might be goodbye."
"I don't like goodbye," she said. "How about...'see you later, alligator.'"
"See you later...alligator?" I asked. I never heard that before. "After a while, crocodile," Lucy replied. She ran off. "Who's Lucy?" Batman asked, suddenly appearing behind me. If Lucy hadn't told him her real name, that means her and I must be closer than I thought! But, that also means she doesn't want him to know. So I won't tell him.
I pulled out instructions I drew. "Batman, when we get in there, there's gonna be audio sensors everywhere. We need to be absolutely quiet."
"Don't worry, dad. I read your dumb instructions. Stop yelling at me," Batman said sarcastically.
"Benny," I said into the walkie talkie. "How's it going on that shield?"
"Oh, it's going great!" Benny yelled back. "If someone would just listen to me!"
"Downloading latest episode of Where Are My Pants," came a girl robot voice on the other end.
"Where are you getting pants from?" Benny yelled. "You know what I want!"
I looked back into Bad Cop's room. He's not inside anymore and there are white flashes inside. Lucy ran up to the window and waved both arms at us. "That's the signal," I said to Batman. "But the shield's still up!"
"Don't worry," Batman said. "We'll wing it." He held up his grappling hook with a short, smug smile. "It's a bat pun."
"Y-yeah, I got it," I replied.
Batman opened the vent and grappled a pipe on the roof. He grabbed me and started swinging with his hook. "Benny," I whispered into the walkie talkie. "Disable the shields!"
"Disable the shields!" benny yelled in the walkie talkie.
"Benny!" I whispered. I heard Benny yelling at the computer for a little bit. "Benny? What's going on?" I asked.
Benny yelled at the computer a little longer before Metal Beard jumped in. "Be ye...disablin' yon shield...uh..."
"Disabling shields," the computer said.
The shield surrounding the Kragle went down and Batman threw me in. I held the walkie talkie closer. "Okay...ten...nine...eight...seven...six...five...four...three...two...one...Let's do this," I whispered. I moved closer to the Kragle, the Piece of Resistance almost touching it, before the shield went back up. I jumped down, as not to get hit by it. Not that I know what really happens when it touches you but I don't really want to find out.
Robots point their guns at Batman, who holds out his hands, upside down. "Oh man," he said. The robots handcuffed me and carried Batman and I away.
"-By which I mean all of them!" Lord Business was saying as we walked near the Think Tank.
"Sorry!" I called.
Author's Note
"Business, business, business. Numbers," Unikitty said, jumping on the table. She leaned in close to a robot. "Is this working?" she whispered.
