It was a dark and cloudy day in the Inkwell Isles. Gwen was out one evening picking up some new art supplies and was coming out of the art supplies store. Gwen looked up in the sky and said,
"Wow, a storm must be coming soon. I better get home."
Gwen started her way back to the cottage and decided to take a shortcut through a creepy cemetery. Gwen looked around the cemetery and was unsure about the spooky sights at first. She decided to make the cemetery a little nicer and more friendly-like. Gwen got out her ink pen and used the magic inkwell to make the dead trees green and healthy, made green grass grow and flowers blossom, and make the gargoyle statues smile.
Gwen feels satisfied and walks through the cemetery until the gate slams in front of her. Unfazed, Gwen uses the magic inkwell and forces the gate to open and exits the cemetery. Thinking nothing was wrong at first, Gwen continues her way back home, unaware she was being watched by some unknown force. A male voice from behind a tombstone says,
"You know what to do."
Another male voice said loudly,
"Yep! Yep! Yep! Boo!"
A slap was heard and a female voice says,
"Shut up! Now go!"
Gwen walks along until she hears an eerie noise echoing through the trees. Gwen turns around quickly to catch the noise, but no one was around. Thinking it was a stupid prank, she continues walking home. As she walked, the eerie noise crept up behind her as Gwen was now starting to feel nervous and just started running until she runs into the cottage and closes and locks the door. Gwen goes up to her room, peeked out the window behind a curtain and said,
"For a second, I thought someone was stalking me."
Gwen hears the phone ring and Gwen answers and says,
"Hello? Who may I ask is calling?"
Gwen hears a wailing noise and Gwen's heart started beating fast and quickly hangs up. Gwen is now starting to feel scared as her room suddenly went dark after her lamp suddenly goes out. Gwen gets out her ink pen, preparing herself to fight until she hears someone coming up the stairs. Gwen gets next to the door, preparing to attack whoever was coming. The door opens and she used her cyan-blue beam attack to attack her stalker but to her surprise, it was her potted flower on the floor. Gwen looked confused and observes the flower.
"Huh? What's going on? How did you get out here?"
Gwen picks up the potted flower, goes back in her room and was about to put it back on her window sill only to realize her real flower in the pot was still there. Feeling scared, Gwen looks at the flower pot she was holding and it was turning into a ghoulish flower and suddenly morphed into an obese ghost with a saw through the top of his head.
"What the? Who are you? What do you want?" Gwen nervously asked.
The obese ghost laughs menacingly and says,
"I'll tell you what I want."
He raises his hands and says,
"You're coming with me little girl!"
Gwen attempted to punch the ghost, but her punches go right through him. The ghost laughed grabs Gwen and lifts her in his arms and makes her bedroom window open and carries her away.
"No! Let me go!"
Gwen yelled as she struggled to break free from the ghost's clutches. The ghost flies back to the cemetery and brings Gwen down to the ground near some tombstones, where two other ghosts were waiting for her.
"I got her fellas! I got her!"
Gwen's kidnapper said.
"Well done, Jasper! Now, let's take a look at our vandal here."
"Vandal?"
Gwen asked in confusion as Jasper held her shoulders to keep her from escaping. The two ghosts circle around her and the short male ghost rudely asked,
"So, you're the human vandal who desecrated our beautiful, spooky cemetery?!"
"What? No, I wasn't vandalizing. I was just making it pretty and nice, that's all!"
Gwen said in a defensive tone.
"You, young lady, made our home not-scary! We like it scary and spooky! We worked hard on it! Now living people won't be scared of coming here anymore!"
The female ghost scolded.
"Okay! Okay! I'm sorry! What can I do to make it up to you?"
Gwen apologized, not thinking of the consequences before.
"Well, restore our home back to the way it was first!"
The short male ghost yelled in her face.
"Okay! No problem!"
Gwen said quickly and used her ink pen and magic inkwell to restore the cemetery back to the way it was before.
"Okay! It's back to its' scary self again! Now can I go home?" Gwen pleaded.
"Oh no, you're not getting off that easy Gwen!" Said the short ghost.
"How do you guys know my name? Who are you?!" Gwen asked fearfully.
"I am Duke. And that's Emma and the chap I sent to bring you here is Jasper."
Duke introduced as he lifted his head cap off, exposing his brain.
"Top of the evening kiddo." Duke said as spiders crawled all over him.
Gwen looked disgusted, then looked up at Jasper as he goofily laughed as Gwen cringed until Duke slapped him.
"You know what we do to those who dare mess with us, eh kiddo?"
Duke asked Gwen, leaning towards her in a menacingly way.
"Ooh, things just got interesting!" Emma said.
Gwen fearfully shook her head and Duke replied,
"We're gonna punish you, ghost style!"
Gwen popped her eyes, and then asked,
"What do you mean?"
"You're about to find out. Jasper now!"
Jasper knocks Gwen out, unconscious and Jasper lays her body on the ground.
The three ghosts gather around her and Duke says,
"Alright, all together! Now!"
They all reach their arms at her chest and grab Gwen's soul out of her body and bring her soul into Jasper's arms and he started rock her and sing,
"Rock-a-bye baby in the treetop…"
Duke slaps him.
"Shut up! Now let's see what she does now."
Duke said, eager to see what Gwen will do next. Gwen slowly wakes up and finds herself in Jasper's arms again and asks,
"What happened? What's going on?"
Gwen looks to see Duke and Emma staring at her, trying to keep from laughing. Jasper lets Gwen out of his arms and approaches the two ghosts and asks,
"What are you guys doing? And why are you looking at me like that?"
"Oh, we just realized… you're shoe's untied." Duke said, stifling his laughter.
"Uh, whatever, that's like the oldest trick in the…"
Gwen said as she looked at her feet, only to realize that she didn't have feet. Just a ghostly tail and notices that she was see-through and glowed a bluish glow.
"What the?!" Gwen said in a shock.
Emma floats up to Gwen and hands her a mirror to show Gwen what she is now. Gwen stared at her reflection and realized she was no longer alive. Gwen gasped and franticly looked around and notices her lifeless body laid down on the ground.
"No! I don't wanna die! It's not my time!"
Gwen yelled and flies down to her body only to be grabbed by Jasper again and brought up to Duke and Emma, not letting her go again.
"Not so fast dear! We're just getting started." Said Emma.
"What are you guys gonna do to me?!" Gwen asked fearfully.
"Oh, just you wait and see! First off, let's us go introduce to you, your new friends!" Duke explained.
Duke and Emma fly off as Jasper grabbed Gwen's hand and flew off after them as Gwen was now scared, not knowing what to do now.
"Note to self, don't ever take shortcuts through cemeteries." Gwen said to herself.
Duke yells,
"Hey everybody! We got a new ghost here!"
All the ghosts rise from their graves and all float up to the group as Gwen stared at them in horror. A ghost with eyeballs in his hands floats up to Gwen and raised his hand and said,
"I'm Blind Specter! Nice to meet you!"
Gwen stared at Blind Specter and reluctantly reached out her hand to shake, only for Blind Specter to stick his eyeball out and scares Gwen. Blind Specter laughed and said,
"Oh, that never gets old!"
And floated away, still laughing.
"What is the meaning of this? I wanna be back in my body! I wanna go home!"
Yelled Gwen, trying to get a hold of herself.
"Not yet kiddo!"
Said Duke, approaching and putting his arm around her and floats with her.
"For your punishment, you're gonna learn what it's like to be a ghost!" Duke explained.
"What?! No! I don't wanna be a ghost! I don't even know how!" Gwen protested.
"Rest assured kiddo. You're in bad hands! That's why we're gonna teach you! You're gonna learn the basics of how to be a ghost!" Duke explained.
Gwen thought for a moment and then asked,
"So, you're saying if I learn how to be a ghost, you'll let me go back in my body, let me go and you'll leave me alone?"
"That about sums it up kiddo. I like you, you're very smart… for a human."
Duke said and he and the other ghosts laugh while Gwen looked unamused.
"Okay can we get this over with? I don't have all night!" Gwen said, losing her patience.
"Patience dear."
Said Emma with a smugly grin, holding a teaching stick.
The ghosts set up a school desk and the ghosts make a chalkboard appear and have Gwen take a seat. Jasper rings a bell loudly and Duke slaps him again. Gwen folded her arms and said impatiently,
"Let's get this over with."
"That's the spirit dear!"
Said Emma and she and the ghosts laugh again, to Gwen's unamusement with their jokes.
"Now then, pay attention! Ghost school is now in session!" Emma announced.
"Lesson number one: Shapeshifting."
Emma said as she wrote down the words she said on the chalkboard.
"Now then my pupil, shapeshifting should be very simple. All you have to do is think of something horrible to turn into and, viola! It will happen! Watch and learn!"
Emma explained, then she shapeshifted into a spookier version of herself, then into a scary tree and into a tombstone with her face until she restored back to her old self.
"Now, it's your turn dearie."
Emma said, gesturing Gwen to try shapeshifting. Gwen gets up from the desk as the other ghosts watch her. Gwen tries to think of something horrible, then she turned into a giant spider only making her appearance cuter. The other ghosts look at her attempt, then laugh at her. Gwen is down and turned back into herself.
"You can do better than that rookie!" Duke yelled.
"Come on! Think of something that horrifies you!" Emma yelled.
Gwen floated, feeling angry then shapeshifted into a giant spider form again, only this time with a menacing look and horrifying appearance with sharp teeth.
"Ooooh! Ahhhh!" The ghosts said, in amazement.
"Now that's more like it! That's an A+ for you dear." Emma said writing on a clipboard.
"Wow, I didn't know I could do that." Gwen said, feeling amazed herself.
"You'd be surprised what a ghost can do!"
Said Duke, putting his arm around her again, then pats her back. Then Jasper floats up and slaps Duke and Gwen's backs really hard and said,
"Yep! We can do ghost stuff! Thank goodness she didn't turn into the Devil."
Duke slaps Jasper again and Emma said,
"Now dearie, it's time for your next lesson."
"Which is?" Asked Gwen.
Emma writes on the chalkboard and says,
"Lesson number two: Scaring."
Just then, a group of three kids come walking in the cemetery. Emma along with Duke and Jasper grab Gwen and take her and hide behind a tree, not far from the kids.
"Now pay close attention dearie. We're gonna show you how to scare people." Emma said.
Duke says,
"First, make scary noises."
Duke demonstrates by making an eerie wind howling noise, startling the kids.
"Then, you sneak up on them, use their fears to scare them, using the element of surprise."
Emma said, then goes and sneaks up on the kids and suddenly appeared before them and appeared as a ghoulish form of herself and roared really loudly. All three kids scream and run away out of the cemetery. Emma and the other ghosts laugh at the kids, then cheer Emma on.
"Thank you. Thank you everyone."
Just then, they notice a bowl-shaped kid approaching.
"Here comes another victim! Your turn dearie! Scare the pants of this kid!"
Gwen hesitated and said,
"Uh, I'm not sure I can do this."
"Baby!" Jasper called her.
"I'm not a baby!" Gwen argued.
Jasper lifted her in his arms, rocked her and sang,
"Rock-a-bye baby in the treetop…"
The other ghosts laugh at her and Gwen finally snapped and said,
"Okay! Okay! Fine! I'll do something!"
Gwen floated away, hid behind a tombstone and made a scary wailing noise, making the bowl-shaped kid nervous. Gwen then hid up to a tree with a scary face carved in, and possessed the tree. The bowl kid fearfully walks next to the tree and Gwen makes a tree root lift up and the bowl kid trips over it.
"Ow!"
The bowl kid exclaimed and turned to look and saw the tree root lower back down. The bowl kid gets scared and backs away from the tree and turns to leave as Gwen makes a moaning noise and says,
"Bowlboy…"
Bowlboy stood there in fear, realizing someone was right behind him. He nervously turns around and sees the tree coming to life and Gwen makes a frightening roaring sound and glowing red eyes. Bowlboy turned white and screamed at the top of his lungs and ran as fast as he could out of the cemetery.
The ghosts laugh at Bowlboy as Gwen came out of the tree. The ghosts turn to Gwen and cheer her on and Jasper lifts her up on his shoulders and Gwen says,
"Thank you. Thank you everyone."
Feeling happy and accepted by the other ghosts.
"That was sensational kiddo! You're a natural!" Duke congratulated her.
Gwen felt happy, yet she remembered that she needed to please the ghosts to get back to her body and go home.
"Now dearie, it's time for your test: haunting a house. The time has come to show the teachers what you learned." Emma said.
"Okay, what do I have to do?" Gwen asked, eager to get the test over with.
"You're going to haunt your very own house!" Emma announced.
Gwen realized she has to scare her best friends, but then gets an idea of how to get help.
"Okay, I'll do it." Gwen agrees.
"Good girl!" Duke pats her head like a dog, to her unamusement.
Gwen along with Duke, Jasper and Emma fly to the cottage and into the cups bedroom. Cuphead and Mugman are snoring loudly, sound asleep while Gwen and the ghosts enter the boy's room.
"Alright kiddo, it's time to apply your new abilities and scare the living daylights out of these cups! Plus, we wanna get even with them for tricking us!"
Duke said as Emma got out her clipboard, ready to grade Gwen.
"Alright, I can do this. I can do this."
Gwen said to herself and flies under the boy's bunkbed while the three ghosts watched. Gwen possesses the bed and makes the bed rattle and makes an evil laugh. Mugman wakes up, scared and said,
"What's that? Is that you Cuphead? It's not funny!"
Cuphead wakes up and yells,
"I'm not doing anything!"
Both cups realized something wasn't right and both get nervous. Just then, Gwen makes two buckets of water appear and splashes cold water on them and both screamed. Then they look to see an illusion of Gwen being kidnapped by the ghosts and having her soul taken out and showing her lifeless body laid in the cemetery as if she was sending them a message to her friends.
Both cups screamed as they saw that illusion and both run out of their room. The ghosts laugh and Gwen comes out from the bed and asked,
"Well, how was that for a haunting?"
"Oh, we couldn't have done it better ourselves kiddo!" Said Duke.
They leave back for the cemetery as Gwen smirked, hoping her message got to the boys.
Cuphead and Mugman enter Gwen's room and yelled,
"Gwen! Gwen! Wake up! Wake up! Wake up!"
But to their surprise, Gwen was not in bed and the window was opened.
"Wait a minute, that illusion we saw was Gwen being kidnapped by ghosts and then got her soul taken out. Which means…" Mugman said.
Both cups gasped and yelled,
"Gwen's at the cemetery!"
"We gotta save her!" Cuphead said.
"Right!" Mugman agreed.
Both cups get dressed and sneak out of the cottage and head for the cemetery.
Meanwhile, the ghosts congratulate Gwen on passing her test and Gwen say,
"Okay, I learned how to be a ghost and I passed your test. Now I can I go back to my body and go home now?"
The ghosts smiled menacingly and Duke said,
"Yeah, about that…"
"We're double-crossing you!" Jasper blurted out their secret.
Duke slaps him again.
"What?" Asked Jasper.
"You idiot! You let the cat out of the bag!" Duke scolded him.
Gwen realized they were going back on the deal and angrily said,
"Wait a minute! You lied to me?!"
"Oh dearie, we were going to send you back to your body. But you proved to us you are a wonderful addition to our team! So, we decided to keep you around and you can help us scare everyone!"
Emma announced their true intentions. Gwen couldn't believe she proved herself useful to the ghosts and go back on their promise.
Just then, Gwen notices her best friends entering the cemetery searching for Gwen. Gwen gets an idea and decided to distract the ghosts and said,
"Hey, look! Someone's coming!"
Gwen pointed in the opposite direction and the ghosts fly away to scare whoever she was pointing at. Gwen leaves and approaches her friends, holding her lifeless body.
"Guys! You came for me!" Gwen said excitedly.
Both cups scream and shiver; but then realize it was their best friend.
"Gwen? Is that you?" Asked Cuphead.
"We got your message Gweny!" Said Mugman.
"Hurry! Help me get back in my body before they come back!"
Cuphead and Mugman help push her soul into her body. The boys anxiously wait for Gwen to wake up. Gwen wakes up and the boys are relieved to see her awake.
"Guys? Am I alive?" Gwen weakly asked.
"Yes, Gwen. You're alive." Said Mugman, wiping a tear.
Both boys hug her as Gwen felt happy to feel their warm hugs again.
"We promise we're never leaving you alone again! Those ghosts scared us before and I didn't think they'd try to use you, Gwen." Said Cuphead.
Gwen's eyes popped, then she asked,
"Wait, you dealt with these ghosts before? How did you guys escape?"
"Well…"
Cuphead explained how they were haunted by those three ghosts until they ran into a clocktower and crashed outside and fell down to the ground. They pretended they were dead until their backs were turned and ran through an open hole in the wall and escaped.
"Wow, I'm sorry you guys went through all that." Gwen said.
Mugman hugged Gwen and said,
"Oh, it was horrible and scary! I just wish there was a way we could get back at them."
Just then, Gwen and the cups hear the ghosts calling for Gwen.
"Oh no! They're looking for me! What should I do?" Gwen fearfully said.
"Let's get you out of here!" Said Cuphead.
The cups take Gwen's hands and pull her towards the exit but realized the gate was still shut.
"Wait! I need to get those ghosts out of my hair!" Gwen realized.
Gwen remembered Jasper saying something about the Devil and suddenly gets an idea and says,
"Guys! I got an idea!"
Gwen whispers her plan to the boys and Cuphead said,
"Hot dog! That's a great idea!"
"Okay Gwen, we'll do it." Mugman said.
Gwen used the magic inkwell to turn herself into a ghost. Then she casts a little magic on the cups and flies off to join the ghosts.
Cuphead and Mugman get down in the bushes and hide. She hears the ghosts calling her name. Gwen casts a little magic on the bush, then flies up to the ghosts and asked,
"Did you call me?"
"You got dirt in your ears kiddo? Of course, we called for you! There was nobody there! Are you trying to trick us or something?" Asked Duke suspiciously.
"I'm sorry! I must've been seeing things." Gwen explained.
Just then, Cuphead and Mugman make loud noises and Gwen and the ghosts look look at the bushes.
"Oh! Maybe I wasn't seeing things after all!" Gwen said.
"Hey! You're right! Let's go!"
Said Emma and they fly to where the cups were making noises. The ghosts see bushes rattling and the ghosts fly up to the bushes, preparing to scare whoever was hiding in there. The three lift up the bushes and make wailing noises, only to realize there were two dummies of the cups there with a phonograph, playing noises.
"What the?"
Duke asked until an eerie familiar voice called,
"Hey! You lookin' for us?"
The ghosts look to see Cuphead and Mugman, in zombie-like forms.
"Oh my! What happened to those cups?!" Duke exclaimed, fearfully.
Cuphead said in an eerie voice,
"You scared us…"
"To death!"
Mugman finished.
The cups moaned and dragged their bodies towards the trembling ghosts as they were backing away.
Just then, the Devil in a giant monstrous form and used his demonic voice and says,
"Your souls… are mine!"
Gwen prepares to reach to the ghosts attack as they all turned white, screamed and flew away as fast as they could. As it turned out, Gwen shapeshifted back to her human form as she and the cups laugh very hard.
"We did it guys! Boy, we really scared those ghosts!" Gwen said.
"Yeah! We got back at them for scaring us that night!" Cuphead said.
"Okay, that's done. Now, can we go home?" Asked Mugman, yawning.
"Yes Mugman, I'm ready for bed." Gwen agreed.
The cups take Gwen's hands and head back to the cottage and both change into their pjs and went to bed. Gwen falls asleep, happy to be alive and to stay away from the cemetery from now on. But from her haunting experience, she gained a new ability to transform into a ghost and how to use a ghost's powers. Gwen sighed of relief and finally goes to sleep.
Just then, she hears Elder Kettles voice say,
"Wait a minute! Who blew a hole in my wall?!"
"Uh oh."
Gwen realized she forgot about the damage on the wall she accidentally caused.
"GWEN!" Elder Kettle yelled.
Gwen sighed and grabbed her ink pen and went to go fix the damage then get scolded by Elder Kettle and goes back to sleep.
