One morning, Gwen was sleeping until she is awakened by Cuphead and Mugman's arguing. Gwen groaned and said,
"I'm gonna kill them."
She got out of bed, walked to their room, opened the door and yelled,
"Guys! Will you keep it down?! I'm trying to sleep here!"
"But Gwen, Cuphead stole and ate all my Halloween candy you restored for me… again!" Mugman pointed at Cuphead.
"Me?! You were the one who left it out!"
Cuphead with chocolate all over his face argued back.
They both resume arguing and fighting each other. Gwen sighed and left their room, giving up on stopping them from fighting. Gwen gets ready for the day, passes the cup's bedroom, goes downstairs and goes outside to get some peace and quiet. Gwen walks in the woods down a road on a nice sunny day. Suddenly, she notices an anthropomorphic kitten chasing a giant peppermint into a tree with an entrance split in the middle like a coin slot.
"What the heck? A giant candy?" Gwen asked herself.
Gwen follows the kid and steps into the tree.
To her surprise, she steps into a whole new land of sweets and candy. Gwen hears a choir singing a creepy song welcoming her to the realm called Sugarland. Gwen remembered the fairy tale, Hansel and Gretel where a boy and a girl eat the sweets off the gingerbread house of a wicked witch. Which turned out to be trick to fatten them up and eat them for her supper until the girl shoved the witch into the oven and killed her and run back home.
And she also remembered another story of Pinocchio where at one point, the living wooden puppet was lured with other children to a fun island in a coach where they could cause mischief and eat sweets until they were transformed into donkeys and sold off.
So, Gwen feared maybe there was a witch or someone in Sugarland. Suddenly, Gwen hears a woman giggling and hides behind a giant cupcake and spies on the kid. In a cake-shaped castle, a pink-skinned brunette-haired woman dressed like a princess pops up out of the castle and floated down to the kid and said,
"My name is Baroness von Bon Bon and today is your lucky day! You get to eat all the sweet treats you desire!"
Baroness gave the kid a creepy big smile.
"Yay!"
The kid cheered and Baroness interrupted and said,
"As long as you don't break my two rules. Rule number one! Tell no one about Sugarland. Rule number two! Eat all the candy you desire except my castle. Not even a teensy-weensy bite. Unless you find it… irresistible."
Gwen was starting to think something was wrong with the castle and Baroness just like in the two stories. So, she grabs her ink pen and gets ready to attack just in case.
The kid starts eating most of the candy he sees and then didn't realize he already took a bite out of the castle. The kid falls down to the frosting ground with a full belly. Baroness jumps on the castle and said,
"Oh! You broke a rule! Naughty, naughty!"
Baroness started to laugh maniacally as the kid notices he is transforming into a sweet treat himself, to Gwen's horror. Gwen figured there was a catch to breaking any of the Baroness's two rules just like in the story of Pinocchio. The kid had been turned into a cat-shaped marshmallow treat. The Baroness giggled and said,
"Now you look… DELICIOUS!"
Baroness laughed menacingly and to Gwen's shock, the castle came to life in a monstrous form and picked up the kid and prepared to devour him. Gwen gasped and said,
"Oh no, you don't!"
She used her ink pen and shot her cyan-blue beam attack at the castle-monster and made him drop the kid.
"What the?"
Asked Baroness and tried to find where the shot came from.
"Who's there?! I think we have an intruder in Sugarland!"
Gwen hid behind the cupcake and breathed heavily but had to stay calm.
"First we eat this brat, then we find the intruder!"
The castle-monster prepared to eat the kid but the kid screamed and hopped as much as he could away from Baroness and the castle-monster. Gwen came up with a plan and painted herself invisible and chased after the kid. Gwen picked up the marshmallow kid and ran toward the exit.
"What the? Who's doing that?"
The castle-monster slammed his fist until frosting splashed Gwen and the kid. Gwen stood up, brushed the frosting off and realized looked at herself and realized she'd been caught.
"Uh oh."
Gwen said fearfully as she turned around and looked up at the Baroness. Baroness gasped and yelled,
"A human girl? In Sugarland?! She's seen too much! Get her!"
She ordered her castle-monster and chased after Gwen. Gwen gasped and grabbed the kid and ran up the path. Gwen almost reaches the exit and is almost out of breath.
"I'm coming to get you, human!"
Baroness yelled and laughed, now turning her attention to Gwen. Gwen reaches the exit and threw the kid out of Sugarland.
Gwen almost makes it out of Sugarland until she feels something grabbed her right foot and pulled her back and was tossed up in the air as she screamed. She falls down and is caught by her foot by the castle-monster and was hanging upside-down as Baroness was laughing evilly.
"Gotcha now! Naughty, naughty teenage girl snooping in my beautiful kingdom!"
The castle-monster laid on its back and prepared to drop Gwen into its mouth to devour her instead for her interference. Gwen lifted her glowing ink pen and yelled,
"Let me go you crazy candy witch or else I'll blast you to cookie crumbs!"
Baroness gasped at Gwen as she noticed the magic inkwell on her belt.
"Wait! Put her down next to me. I want a good look at this human."
The castle-monster gets back up and drops Gwen next to Baroness on top of himself. Gwen gets up on her feet and Baroness observes every inch of Gwen from her hair, to her nose, her mouth and her eyes. She even takes her glasses and looks at them.
"Hmm, so you're that human girl from the human world with the magic inkwell everybody's talking about huh?"
Gwen's eyes popped and asked,
"How did you know that?"
"I heard through the licorice line."
Baroness explained as she put Gwen's glasses back on her face and giggled with a crazy look on her face. Gwen was feeling spooked and asked,
"Oh. Uh, how long have you been in here ma'am?"
Baroness put her arm around her and said,
"A long time dear. I don't get out much. In fact, I can't leave on account of an ancient curse… but that's a story for another time dear."
Gwen was shocked and said, "Oh, I see. Anyway, what do you want me for?"
The castle-monster crawled back to where it stood before and Baroness said,
"Well, since you rescued my snack, which was impressive I admit it. I was thinking you could now provide me a something to eat with that inkwell of yours."
Gwen was puzzled.
"That's it? Fine, just name it and it's yours. But I'm not giving you children to turn into sweets and eat them!" Gwen sternly said to her.
"Fair enough. Hee hee. But you should know dear, I only eat sweet treats." Baroness explained to her.
"My name is Gwen." Gwen muttered.
"Fine Gwen, now… FEED ME!" Baroness yelled.
Gwen sighed and used the Inkwell and made a bowl of potato soup with a slice of sourdough bread appear before Baroness.
"Bon Appetit Baroness von Coo-Coo Pants." Gwen said in a flat tone.
Baroness sniffed the soup, tossed it away and yelled,
"You're gonna have to do better than that! I told you! I only eat SWEET TREATS!"
Gwen groaned and used the inkwell and thought up a whole 8-inch red-velvet cake with white cream-cheese frosting and red roses made of red frosting.
"Here! It's my favorite sweet treat since I was a kid: Red-Velvet Cake!" Gwen scolded and folded her arms.
"Now, that's more like it!" Baroness said, giving approval.
Baroness sniffed the cake and then poked her finger in the cream cheese frosting, tasted it and said,
"Mmm…"
Suddenly, she started eating the cake like a wild animal to Gwen's disgust.
"Ugh!"
Baroness finished the cake and stared at Gwen watching her. Baroness pulls a napkin out of her dress pocket and wiped her face and burped. Baroness giggled and said,
"You know Gwen, no one has ever made something for me to eat before. Well, most of the time, I would be tempting disgusting children to break my rules so they turn into tasty treats and I try to eat them. Hee hee."
Gwen stood there, shocked and realized that Baroness is lonely and insane.
"Well, maybe if you'd stop luring and tricking children into breaking your two rules that get them turned into treats, you'd probably have more friends." Gwen pointed out.
"Bleh! I don't eat disgusting children! Only sweet treats."
Gwen gave Baroness a glare and argued,
"Yeah, not actual children, but only when they turn into sweet treats you do! Look lady, I gotta go, but I'll come visit you again when you're calm and less insane. Bye!"
Gwen gets down from the castle and walks up the path until Baroness grabs her hand and says,
"Wait Gwen! Don't go! Stay here with me in my castle! I'll let you eat all the candy you desire! I could use a best friend around here!"
"No thanks, I'm watching my weight. But I'm actually late for this thing so, I gotta go! Bye-bye!"
Gwen makes a run for the exit and manages to escape Sugarland this time.
"You'll be back Gwen. Toodle-oo!" Baroness called out to her and laughed menacingly.
Gwen sighed of relief and ran as fast as she could back to the cottage. Gwen closes the door behind her and breathed heavily, happy to get away from Sugarland. Gwen hears the boys still fighting upstairs again and Gwen said,
"Eh, I'd rather deal with my best friend's bickering than deal with Baroness von Coo-Coo Pants."
She walked upstairs and went back to her room and went back to bed for a nap. This time, she puts ear muffs on her ears to block out the sound of her best friends fighting and sleeps peacefully. After napping, Gwen wakes up, takes her ear muffs off and noticed the cottage was quiet. She assumes the cups went outside to play and decided to train some more in her training grounds in the forest.
After going outside, Gwen started her way to the training grounds to practice her skills she learned from her trainers Ribby and Croaks. She warms up, does some push-ups and punches a bunching bag with the Devil's face printed on it. Gwen rests for a few minutes, then she gets out her ink pen and practices her attacks she made up and blasts some more Devil-dummies.
After a while, she rests against a tree, thinks about the crazy Baroness and asks,
"I wonder what that ancient curse is that Baroness von Coo-Coo Pants told me about?"
Suddenly, the giant peppermint rolled in front of Gwen and she was spooked. Gwen asked herself,
"What the? How did she know where I was?"
Just then, Gwen sees a note on the peppermint and Gwen takes the note and it said,
"Gwen, that red-velvet cake was the best treat I ever had! Come on back so we can hang out some more! Unless of course, you'd rather let me eat delicious sweet treats that were once disgusting children like your two cup friends I just lured to Sugarland and tricked them into breaking one of my rules and now I currently have them in my clutches! Anyway, see you soon! Love your dearest new friend, Baroness von Bon Bon."
"Oh boy, those two just can't stay out of trouble!" Gwen exclaimed.
She was worried, so she decided to go back to Sugarland to rescue her friends. The giant peppermint rolled away and Gwen followed it back up to the tree portal to Sugarland. Gwen takes a deep breath and says,
"Note to self, don't eat anything and don't get eaten."
Gwen steps into Sugarland and hears the creepy song sing to her, welcoming her to Sugarland again. Gwen walked along the candy pathway and looked for the Baroness and her castle-monster. Gwen walked until she reached the castle-monster who appeared to be sleeping. Gwen kept her distance and noticed the castle had two bites in it.
"Oh boy, they broke rule two." Gwen said, figuring it out.
Suddenly, she heard the Baroness call out,
"I knew you'd be back Gwen. They always come back you know!" She laughed menacingly.
Gwen gathered up some courage and yelled,
"Where are my friends?!"
"Friends? Oh, you mean these two?"
Baroness appeared on top of her castle and said and held up a candy-cane cage with Cuphead transformed into a gummy-bear version of himself and Mugman turned into a gingerbread man version of himself.
"Gwen! Help us!" Cried Cuphead.
"She said she was gonna eat us if you didn't get here quickly!" Mugman added.
Gwen gasped at her friend's transformation, held up her ink pen and yelled,
"Give me back my friends or else!"
"Uh! Uh! Uh! First, you're gonna do something for me." Baroness said.
"What now? I gave you that red-velvet cake!" Gwen snapped.
"I know! Now, I want to you to stay here with me in Sugarland and be my best friend! Unless of course, you'd rather I eat your tasty-looking friends." Baroness sinisterly explained.
"Are you crazy?! I can't stay in this candy H.E. double hockey sticks!"
Gwen yelled, losing patience with Baroness.
"Oh, very well then. Your friends are mine to eat!"
Baroness said calmly and prepared to eat them.
"Wait!"
Gwen sighed and said begrudgingly,
"Okay fine! I'll stay!"
"Wonderful, now let's have some fun, shall we?"
Baroness asked, giving her a creepy smile. Baroness takes Gwen to mountain made of frosting and both slide down on sleds Gwen created. Then they swing on swing sets made of candy canes for a while which of course Gwen created. Then they go boating in Hot Fudge Springs in little boats Gwen made from the inkwell. Finally, they sit down at a gum drop table and sip some hot cocoa together as they watched the sun was setting in Sugarland.
"That was a fun day, eh sweetie?" Baroness asked.
Gwen sat there, feeling overwhelmed by the fun they had and eating sweets and felt a little sick. Gwen was eager to get her friends back and leave Sugarland and never come back.
"Uh, yeah sure. It was 'fun' and all but I kept my part of the bargain so, I'll just go get my friends and be on our way. We'll do this again soon."
Gwen gets up from her gum drop chair and was about to get her friends until the castle-monster picks her up and Baroness said,
"Of course, you kept your part. But I had so much fun with you today. Which is why I now decided that you're staying with me and be my best friend… FOREVER!" Baroness yelled and laughed maniacally.
"What?!"
Gwen yelled as the castle-monster lifted her to a giant candy cane tree and slammed her against it and chained her up. Gwen struggled to break loose but her arms were chained so she couldn't reach her ink pen.
"Let me and my friends go you crazy candy witch!"
"Sorry dear for doing this but don't worry, we'll do the same thing every day… for all eternity!"
Baroness laughed menacingly and leaves with her castle-monster with the cups still trapped. Gwen groaned in anger and struggled until she was tired.
Gwen sat there chained up, struggling to think of an escape plan. Gwen noticed her legs weren't chained up so she uses her knees to scoot her dress pocket up to her mouth and bites on the ink pen and thinks up some creations made of anthropomorphic sweet treats that magically appear before her.
They were a group of a flying waffle, a gumball machine, a giant candy corn, a giant jawbreaker and a cupcake.
"Woah!" Gwen said with her pen in her mouth.
"Help me!"
The group try to help Gwen loosen the chains. Her arms get loose but they couldn't get the chains off of her.
"It's no use! We can't break these chains!" Said the cupcake.
"Maybe you could eat the chains kid?" The gumball machine suggested.
"No, but that does give me an idea!"
Gwen used her ink pen and turned her chains into licorice and bites the licorice chain off of her and is finally free. The sweets help her up and Gwen said,
"Come on! We gotta get my friends back from that Baroness von Coo-Coo Pants!"
Gwen runs up the candy path with the five sweets following her.
The group sneaks up to the castle and notice the cups were still in the candy cane cage unharmed or eaten. Gwen thinks for a moment and whispers,
"Okay listen up…"
The group huddle up and Gwen whispers the plan.
"Okay, everyone got it?"
The five sweets all nodded and go up to the castle while Gwen sneaks from behind the castle. The five sweets go up to the front and all five yell out
"YOO-HOO!"
Baroness comes out of the castle and yelled,
"Who's there?!"
Baroness looks down at the new arrivals and is awed.
"Who are you five? I've never seen you before!"
"We are new in Sugarland and today's your lucky day! We've come to be your new friends!" The flying waffle explained as he fluttered with his syrup-wings.
"Ooh! Show me what you dearies can do!" Baroness said, now fascinated.
The five sweets show off their abilities with the flying waffle exploding and pulling himself back together, the gumball machine can juggle and do tricks with his gumballs, the candy corn shows off his scary candy corn teeth, the jawbreaker could open himself revealing his head as the very center and the cupcake can jump very high in the air and splash frosting.
The Baroness is entertained with their stunts while Gwen creates a candy stairway and climbs up and gets on top and the cups take notice and Gwen shushes them, not to make a sound. Gwen thinks for a moment then she decided to try something. She points her ink pen at the boys and shoots a pink beam at them, reverting them back to their original forms. She then uses telekinesis to lift the cage and goes back down the candy stairs and down to the ground. Gwen makes the cage disappear and the boys are free.
"Shh!"
Gwen whispered and they run away and hide behind the giant cupcake.
"Oh guys, I thought she'd eaten you!"
Gwen whispered and gave them a hug.
"How did she lure you guys here?" Gwen asked.
"Oh, we saw that giant candy rolling by the cottage and we decided to go back to Sugarland and eat all the candy!" Cuphead admitted.
"Wait, what do you mean 'go back'? You met her before?" Gwen was shocked.
"Yeah, you see…"
The cups explain the time Cuphead found Sugarland and was tempted to eat the candy but surprisingly resisted and left. Then he tried to apologize to Mugman for eating his Halloween candy the first time but he didn't accept it. So, Cuphead broke the Baroness's first rule and brought Mugman to Sugarland and they pigged out on the candy and sweets until Mugman unknowingly broke her second rule and were transformed into candy and were chased by Baroness and the castle monster until they finally escaped.
"Wait, where was I that day?" Asked Gwen.
"You were taking acting lessons from Sally Stageplay at Inkwell Theater. Remember?"
Gwen thought and then she remembered,
"Oh yeah! I was wondering why the cottage was a huge mess that day with all that frosting when I came home! And why Elder Kettle was acting crazy until I knocked him out and put him to bed. Then I found you guys in your room, shaking and holding onto each other like you'd seen a ghost." Gwen said.
"Oh, Elder Kettle tried to eat us until you knocked him out and then we changed back before you walked in." Mugman pointed out.
"Oh, that explains a lot. Now, come on! We gotta get out of here!"
Gwen takes the boys and was about to head back to the tree portal when all of a sudden, they hear the Baroness yell,
"Found you!"
The trio panicked, looked behind them and saw the Baroness and the castle-monster coming their way as she yelled,
"It took me a while, but I finally realized what was going on and I saw that the boys were gone and you were gone too! Why, you even turned them back into their regular forms! Impressive by the way. GET THEM!"
Baroness ordered her castle and started to chase them up the path. Gwen looked around and saw the giant peppermint and got an idea. Gwen tosses the boys on the side of the peppermint and Gwen makes herself hop up to the top and walked on the peppermint as it kept rolling. Gwen fired her attacks at the castle to slow him down.
"Teach that crazy lady a lesson!" Yelled Mugman.
"Yeah, get her Gwen!" Yelled Cuphead and blew a raspberry at them.
They almost reach the exit until the boys slipped off the candy and fall down. Gwen bumps into the tree portal, falls down and injures her leg. Gwen looked up and realized Baroness and the castle were getting closer and Baroness yelled,
"You're all mine Gwen!"
Gwen struggled to get up until she tells the boys,
"Go! Save yourselves!"
"We're not leaving you behind! That's not happening!" Mugman argued.
"I can't walk!" Gwen snapped.
"We'll carry you!" Said Cuphead.
The cups try to help Gwen up until the castle-monster makes a giant leap towards them. The cups scream until the five sweets jump in a the last second and shove the trio out of Sugarland.
"Aw, licorice sticks! They escaped?!"
The Baroness yelled in frustration. Gwen and the cups land safely on the frosting and listened to the Baroness cry and whine about her defeat. Gwen thinks for a moment, then she makes herself a note and writes a message.
"Hey kid!" Called the jawbreaker.
Gwen looked up and saw her creations were stuck in Sugarland and said,
"Thanks for saving us fellas!"
"You gotta get out of here! Now!" Called the candy corn.
"Wait! I have a message for Baroness!" Gwen called.
Gwen has Cuphead give the message to the Cupcake since he had hands.
"We'll give this to her!" Called the flying waffle.
"Thanks guys!"
Gwen gets her ink pen and heals her injured leg. She manages to stand up and says,
"I'm gonna make sure no one ever gets in that creepy candy place again!"
Gwen makes a giant boulder, blocking the entrance to Sugarland.
The cups take Gwen's hands and run back to the cottage.
Back in Sugarland, the cupcake calls to Baroness,
"Hey! We have a message from Gwen!"
Baroness stopped whining and crying and said,
"Really? Let me see it!"
The castle-monster takes the message and gives it to Baroness and she reads aloud,
"Baroness, I'll leave you these five creations of mine to live with you and your castle. They are really fun guys and they can help you stay out of trouble. It's not right to hold someone against their will just to be their friend! You don't own me; real friends don't do that. We can try to be friends again someday. I can even help you break your ancient curse if you let me help you when you behave yourself and not trap me all for yourself in Sugarland again. Sincerely, Gwen.
Baroness is stunned by her words and sighed and said,
"Alright fine. I'll try. But they'll be back. They always come back!"
Baroness snickered and leaves the tree portal and her five new friends follow her. Meanwhile back at the cottage, Gwen and her surrogate family finished dinner and Elder Kettle says as he brought something to the table,
"Alright everyone, here's dessert. You're favorite Gwen: Red-Velvet cake!"
Gwen felt sick and says,
"Oh no."
Gwen runs to the bathroom and started throwing up. Elder Kettle looked at her questioningly and asked,
"What's eatin' her?"
"You don't wanna know." Cuphead answered.
"Yeah, long story." Mugman added.
After throwing up, Gwen goes upstairs and gets ready for bed and lays down in bed to rest until she recovers from her upset stomach. Gwen realized turning things into candy could be useful to her. But she promises herself to lay off sweets for a long while.
