Chapter Seven- Into the Mountain Base

It was a bleak looking base and the mountains around it were just as bleak. That was Harry's impression when he laid eyes on it. He and several men had infiltrated very far towards the base without encountering a single guard. The base, as it turned out, was very heavily guarded and hundreds, if not thousands of men were either patrolling the base or focusing on the construction work.

"Most of you, wait here until I call you up. Three of you follow me closely and help get recruits. Decide amongst yourselves quickly who's coming with me before I make the choice myself." His men rapidly made a choice between them as to who would follow Harry and who would follow up later.

Harry and his small squad proceeded up a series of concrete ramps and emerged in what appeared to be a parking lot which only contained a single truck and a motorcycle. Up ahead, Harry could see a solitary guard who was patrolling the pathway ahead. Harry mimicked what he wanted one of his men to do while the other two held back, which they immediately understood. Harry got into a hidden alcove from which he could ambush any guards coming to investigate. He gestured to the man he mimicked his instructions to that it was time to carry out his instructions. The man carried out his instructions by throwing an empty magazine towards an section of the vehicle park that allowed noise to travel very far and wide. The patrolling guard moved to investigate the noise and once he moved past Harry's hidden position, Harry snuck behind him and choked him unconscious.

Unbeknownst to Harry or his men, a pair of guards who had been further away heard the disturbance and moved to investigate. The pair of guards arrived on the scene and witnessed Harry levitating their unconscious comrade away. They were momentarily stunned and, then as they moved to radio for reinforcements, they were both knocked out by tranquilliser darts.

Realising that their direct path ahead was going to be very hazardous to walk along, Harry decided to find an alternative route. He eventually found one and then spoke to the men accompanying him. "Right, I'm going to see if there's an alternative way into this place. I reckon that our best chance is if me and one other person goes through the ventilation shaft to our left here and find a less guarded way in. The other two will stay here and lure the guards out of their positions, and get us some more recruits in the process." Harry explained to his men. The most inexperienced soldier of the trio decided to accompany Harry and with a nod to the other two men, Harry and the other soldier crawled through the ventilation shaft and emerged in another parking lot.

This parking lot was a lot more crowded, with over a dozen trucks, several half-tracks and a few tanks and armoured cars. A light tank destroyer was also parked up in the same area. In total, Harry counted about 11 Opel Blitz trucks, 4 Studebaker US6 trucks, 5 Sd Kfz 251 half tracks, 3 M3 half tracks, 1 M2 half track, 5 M8 Armoured cars, 2 Sd Kfz 231 armoured cars, 3 S-35 tanks, 2 Panzer IV tanks and a single Panzerjager I light tank destroyer. Harry felt that they would be very useful in future and he noted their location.

He and the soldier accompanying him moved forward a short distance. before they spotted another guard. Harry quickly took out his wand and fired off a wordless stunner. The guard promptly crumpled and Harry moved forward, ordering the soldier accompanying him to tie the guard up and place him within the armoured vehicles and the trucks and to the same with any other stunned guards as he caught up with Harry.

Harry stunned a few guards who were in his way and soon found himself directly below the base. A sloping path that lead to the wall of a building seemed the best way but a guard at the top of the path deterred him from using it. Instead, Harry found a stack of crates that were positioned like a set of stairs and began climbing them. Harry took his time climbing the crates, making sure that he was not spotted by guards.

Once he reached the top of the crates, he saw that there were a few concrete buildings and some huts made with bricks. To his left, another sloping path went up to a relatively small landing almost directly above him and then yet another sloping path that lead away from him. Wanting to see where the drugs were, he slipped past a few patrolling guards and made his way up the pathway. Seeing no guards at the top, he found himself at the top overlooking the base. After a moment, he heard the sound of construction work and helicopter rotor blades whirling. He moved to investigate the noise while his men mopped up the knocked out enemy soldiers and avoided the still alert guards.

Harry found himself at a construction site and heliport. Before his eyes, thousands of tons of materials were being used, from concrete to wood and metal. In addition the supplies of the base came in the same types of crates as the tools being used in the construction work. Harry hid behind a crate as workmen and guards swarmed the area. Near the main area of construction, a trio of senior commanders were inspecting the work going on and Harry recognised Coningham as one of the three.

"How goes the construction of this building?" Coningham asked one of the workers.

"It's getting there Lieutenant Commander. Several of the workers have become ill or have become injured but we're pressing on." One of the lead workers reported.

Behind Coningham, a young woman looked at the fair haired man next to her with a frown on her face. "Commander..." She began.

"Yes, I know." The fair haired man replied to the young woman without turning to her. He then turned to Coningham and warningly said, "Coningham, don't move."

Just a moment later, a section of scaffolding collapsed on to where Coningham would have been had he continued moving. Coningham was stunned by the near death experience but was shaken from his thoughts by a construction worker coming up to him. "Lieutenant Commander, Commander, are you alright?"

The fair haired man spoke to the construction worker, "we're fine. Check for injuries amongst yourselves and then get back to work. But first, I require a minute of your time. I do not however want you to think that I am unappreciative of the work you are doing here and all over the peninsula." As he ended that final sentence, a wave of power drew everyone to attention. Even Harry found himself paying attention to the fair haired man, having felt the surge of power coming from him. "The work that all of you are doing here and elsewhere will be the foundation of a new nation, not of soldiers but for them and it will be all of you, who joined me here, who will be that nation's first citizens." As the fair haired man finished speaking to his men, Harry realised the identity of the fair haired man as the man's men saluted him.

"So that must be Gene. I wonder how he got that power in his voice. No wonder he has got most of these soldiers on his side." Harry commented to himself. He took in every detail of the man as he slowly began slipping back to the main area of the base.

Before he left the construction area, Harry overheard Coningham talk with Gene and a doctor. "What's the status of Null?

"He's still being reset, Lieutenant Commander. We're having some difficulty as not all the materials and equipment we need to reset him have been delivered." The doctor reported.

"Don't worry doctor, you'll get those materials and equipment." Gene reassured the doctor.

"In the meantime, I have brought in a specialist to take care of Null." Coningham added.

"A specialist, sir?" the doctor asked unsurely.

"Yes, she'll be overseeing the care he gets. You'll be answering to her as soon as she arrives."

"Very well sir." The doctor said compliantly.

"Good then. He needs to be up and running again as soon as possible." Coningham said as he, Gene, the doctor and the young woman walked away from the construction area.

The young woman felt a familiar presence as she walked away from the construction area. Her eyes scanned the surroundings looking for anything odd but saw nothing. She turned around as she continued following Gene and Coningham. Harry also took note of her appearance and demeanor, sarcastically thinking to himself, 'She looks like she loves to have some fun' and then finally left the construction area.

Harry found himself back above the main mountain base and saw that the guards had been reinforced.

"Boss! over here!" an alarmed whisper called to him. It was the soldier who had followed him through the ventilation shaft and had been moping up Harry's mess.

"What happened?" Harry asked the soldier calmly.

"They summoned more troops to guard the base and it seems they've detected our presence. They haven't found any of us but they're sweeping the entire base and the area around it." The soldier replied to Harry, clearly feeling on edge.

"Calm down and relax. I need to contact Roy and update him on our progress." Harry said the soldier. He called Roy on his radio and spoke to him. "Roy, I haven't been able to find those preventative drugs yet. Must be in one of the buildings here."

"What! Still no sign of them? Maybe there's a research lab somewhere in the base? Have a search for a research lab and see if the drugs are there." Roy told Harry after thinking about where the drugs could be for a moment.

"You could be right about that Roy. I heard them talk about someone or something called Null. Those drugs must be nearby if there's a research lab around here. I doubt that they would've moved them anywhere else this quickly. Anyway, I will continue hunting for them. Over and out." Harry said, ending the radio conversation.

"What are our orders, boss?" The soldier who had been accompanying him asked.

"Make your way back to the others and make your way back to our base. I will hunt the supplies myself and bring them back." Harry said confidently to the soldier, who nodded his willingness to carry out that order. "Go and don't look back." Harry told the soldier before remembering something, "Oh, before you go, take these and stick it on the truck and motorcycle we saw when we first arrived." He handed the soldier a couple of sticky objects that resembled chewing gum or blue tack. The soldier looked at him in confusion, which caused Harry to respond, "Don't worry about it, it's gum with a special surprise." which he said with a smile. The soldier looked at Harry with continued confusion but shrugged his shoulders and snuck back to the rest of his comrades.

Harry observed the activity around the buildings in the base from his vantage point. He observed several guards moving around, aggressively patrolling the pathways outside the buildings. Harry made his way down from his vantage point and then began stalking the patrolling guards, stunning them with his phoenix feather wand. He then stunned the doctors and technicians to stop them raising the alarm. He summoned long ropes to tie them all up and turned one the ropes into a portkey, which transported them instantly to the harbour base. Harry then found many crates filled with rations, ammunition and medicine as well as a few weapons, mostly bolt action rifles and made them weightless before shrinking them. Once he was done scavenging for supplies, he made his way into what he assumed to be a research lab.

In front of him, a tank of thick blue liquid was connected to computers and machines by wires and cables. Harry had searched a few rooms for the preventative drugs and this was the last room he had yet to search. Harry moved closer to the tank until he stood over it and peered into the liquid. Inside, a teenage boy was connected to wires and seemingly asleep.

"Hmm, what has happened to this kid? More importantly, who is this kid?" Harry asked himself aloud.

Harry was pulled from his musings as the door to the room opened and a person entered. "Can't you see the sign? Authorised personnel only." A teenage girl asked authoritatively.

"A kid? What is someone your age doing here?" Harry asked incredulously.

"I'm in charge here." The teenage girl responded without a trace of humour in her voice.

"You? In Charge?" Harry asked, still not believing that the teenage girl in front of him was in charge of looking after this... project.

There were voices approaching from outside the room. "You lot, check the the area. You, follow me, we'll check the Null Chamber." A soldier ordered his squad, directing them to sweep the area while getting one of the squad to follow him. Harry heard the squad split up with the faint sound of many footsteps drowned out by the approaching pair of soldiers.

The teenage girl turned to Harry instantly, "Quick Harry, get in the locker!"

"What?!!"

"Just do it!"

Harry entered the locker and closed the door just as the two soldiers entered. They scanned the room and saw the teenage boy in the fluid tank and the teenage girl. The teenage girl started protesting at the intrusion. "Can't you see the sign? Authorised personnel only. You're disturbing his rest."

"Sorry, Miss Elisa, We're looking for the escaped prisoners and the band of AWOL soldiers they're gathering. We were wondering if you had seen anyone in here or around the base?" The soldier replied, somewhat abashed.

"No it's just me... and him." Elisa replied to the soldier, turning her head slightly to the boy in the tank of fluid. The soldier accepted her answer without any fuss.

"Okay Miss. If you see anything, don't hesitate to let us know." The soldier said pleasantly. He and his companion left the chamber afterwards, with the door automatically closing behind them.

Harry cautiously emerged from his hiding spot. "Thank you." He said gratefully. He then paused for a moment before asking some more questions, "You're not wearing your uniform. How come?" He asked, realising that he had seen her at the construction area.

"My uniform?" she asked confusedly. Her eyes narrowed but she shot him a small smile.

"You're part of Gene's rebellion... aren't you?" Harry asked, beginning to feel very confused.

"I guess from a certain point of view, you could say that I am part of Gene's rebellion. I think I know why you think I had a uniform on like the military personnel. You saw my sister, she's the one who's part of Gene's military rebellion. I'm just a doctor who specialises in looking after Null here. I'm Elisa by the way."

"Back up a second. You have a sister?" Harry asked the teenage girl.

"Yes. She is my Twin and her name is Ursula. Her psychic powers are second to none where we come from."

"And that is... where?"

"Eastern Germany and Western Poland."

"Surely you'd both be born in one country or another." Harry asked, his face frowning for a moment.

"We were literally born on the German - Polish border. Our mother died giving birth to us and we don't know who our father is." Elisa explained. "We were raised in secret government laboratories run by secret government organisations, our psychic abilities honed by learning from all the greatest psychics, even some specialist wizards and witches and our powers amplified from our being blasted with radiation."

"Sounds like they wanted a secret weapon." Harry commented dryly.

"Indeed. Anyway about four or five years ago, Gene rescued us from those secret laboratories. We owe him our lives but I can't allow him to cause the death and destruction of millions of lives."

"Maybe he wanted you and your sister as weapon as well?" Harry pondered.

"It's very possible but I don't know. He saved us from those labs, it's difficult for me to go against him considering that."

"Of course, you'd be under a life debt. I think however, if I am correct, whatever he is planning and what you have done for him has fulfilled that." Harry summarised. He then turned his attention to the teenage boy in the fluid tank. "What about him? What's his story?"

Elisa walked up to the fluid tank, then turned to Harry. "Well... Harry Potter, where to begin?" She thought about it for a moment. "He was created in a lab. Before he became as you see him now, he was a normal boy. After he became as you see him now, he had his memories wiped and his instincts honed to a very high degree to become a very deadly soldier. Trained to do every mission one can think of. Assassination, infiltration, sabotage; every kind of Black Ops, he is trained for. He can also decimate enemy units in more conventional warfare. If you face him, you should run away." She then positioned herself in front of the tank protectively but had a small smile on her face. "Alternatively, you could shoot him here and now... but then I would have stand in your way and you'd have to shoot me first."

Harry smirked and gripped his wand and pistol. "Well seeing as you know who I am, you should remember that I am a wizard and I could stun you, then shoot him anyway."

Elisa looked slightly abashed but continued smiling, "I had forgotten that. It's not everyday that one meets the legendary 'Boy Who Lived' after all."

"I really hate that title, I really do. Because of something that I had no control over. Didn't even happen in this reality. Only reason it matters in this reality is because my reality merged with this one." Harry said bitterly.

"Better than being called the slaughterer of Coronaverg or the thief of the Trellingborg Legacy." Elisa said, one of her eyebrows raised.

"I have no idea about either thing. I have never heard of the Trellingborg Legacy and I didn't even know what happened at Coronaverg until Coningham said about it a few days ago." Harry replied angrily.

"Calm down Harry Potter. I can sense you're telling the truth. My psychic powers are relatively weak compared with my sister but I can still sense who's telling the truth and who's lying. I think Gene may know something about those two things."

"Well, when I get to meet him, I'll be sure to ask him about them. I've only ever been responsible for one needless massacre and that was an accident."

"Could you explain?" Elisa asked out of curiosity.

"Me and my forces were pursuing a fleet stolen from us and we came across what we believed to be a Outer Heaven stronghold on a island. Everything we possessed showed a massive Greenskin fortress and so we commenced a massive bombardment with shells and rockets from our ships. It was only when I noticed that some of our shells and rockets were passing through the walls of the fortress that I realised that we had been tricked into attacking a defenceless island that had nothing to do with Outer Heaven." Harry gulped before resuming, "It was too late though. Most of the island's population had been wiped out and the land itself was dead. Only about nine percent of the original one hundred and twenty five thousand population survived and while the land has since gained new life, it's twisted, a reflection of before what happened to it."

"Isn't that the event that caused the allies to turn on you and declare war?" Elisa asked, looking as though she already knew the answer.

"Indeed it was. It cost us our reputations among our former allies and families and friends. I'll tell you about when I was on Coronaverg another time though, okay?" Harry's eyes turned back to the teenage boy in the fluid tank momentarily before looking back at Elisa with a small smile, "Anyway we're going off topic. I was saying about the fact I could stun you and then shoot him anyway."

"Yes, you could... but I can't see you doing that. I don't think it's in your nature to kill in cold blood. You've come close on more than one occasion but you're simply too kind and honourable." Elisa replied, her psychic powers glimmering through.

Harry somewhat relaxed his grip on his wand and pistol and smiled at Elisa, "You're right. If I killed him here, I'd be no better than the monsters I fight."

"I knew you couldn't." Elisa replied happily. She then studied Harry for a moment, "Wait here for just one minute, I'll be right back." Elisa then left the chamber hurriedly.

Harry looked somewhat bemused at Elisa's actions until she returned to the chamber and pulled out a number of clear plastic bags filled with fluids and tablets and capsules. "Here, take these. They're the preventative drugs you've been searching for." Elisa said.

"How did...?" Harry began as he took the sealed plastic bags.

"How did I know you were after those drugs? You could say that I am a bit psychic." Elisa said cheekily, her face smirking. Harry shot her a small smile in response.

Elisa then pointed to a small hatch in the floor. "You can get to the vehicle parks through there. Crawl through until you find another hatch with blue edges. Remove the hatch and brace yourself for a hard landing at the bottom. Follow the shaft until you emerge just above one of the vehicle parks and you should be able to get away from there. When you've got away, there is a harbor at the eastern end of the peninsula. You'll find what you should be looking for there."

"Thank you so very much. Won't they suspect that you helped me to escape?" Harry said gratefully before the tone became one of concern.

"I'll be fine. Besides, they need me to help look after him and I'd be the last person they'd suspect of helping you." She said optimistically, gesturing to the boy in the tank.

"Thank you Elisa for your assistance. If you ever think that you're in danger, do not hesitate to contact me." Harry said sincerely as he began descending through the floor and into the maintenance shafts.

"I will... oh and Harry?... If you see my sister in front of you, do not hesitate to shoot her." Elisa said warningly.

"Why would I shoot your sister? I'll stun her, if I have to, but I will not shoot to kill." Harry replied tersely.

"She may not give you a choice." Elisa warned.

Harry narrowed his eyes at Elisa before crawling into the maintenance shafts.

A short time later, Harry emerged from one of the maintenance shaft exits, dropping into the more packed vehicle park. He shook his limbs after having bruised himself and being in a confined space, which gave him a little cramp. He knew that he'd probably done more than just bruise himself whilst in the maintenance shafts but he felt he could wait until he returned to his base to properly check out his potential injuries.

"I am not doing that again anytime soon." He half-joked to himself. He checked the path leading to the base to see if there was any enemy patrols coming in his direction. He didn't see anyone but sensed a number of magical signitures in front and behind him. "Right, come out of your little hiding places, I know you're there."

In front of him, several uniformed guards emerged from crevices in the walls and from behind crates stacked high up and from behind him, more emerged from underneath the various trucks and other vehicles. His eyes widened in alarm when he saw that these guards, while equipped with rifles, shotguns and machine pistols, had wands drawn and aimed directly at him.

Their leader stepped forwards a couple of steps and lowered his wand arm. Harry drew his wand and pistol and aimed at the leader of this group of guards. The other guards tightened their grip on their wands and also prepared to draw their guns until their leader gestured for them to relax somewhat.

"Harry Potter... as I live and breathe, the legendary hero himself... or in other circles, the legendary villain. Well it's a pleasure to finally meet you at last." The leader of the guards said in a tone that bordered on adoration.

"Who are you?" Harry asked with suspicion, not dropping his guard.

"My name is not important... but most people call me Shatterhand. I was grown for war." The leader said before Harry interrupted.

"Grown?" Harry questioned.

"Yes, grown. I have no mother, no father, just someone who I share DNA with."

"Do you know who you share DNA with?"

"No and to be honest I don't really care. Your capture however... is another thing entirely." Shatterhand raised his wand and his followers followed suit. "Please surrender and we can avoid bloodshed. Besides some of my men here served Samgon in the old wars and would just love to kill you."

"Well... you do have me outnumbered." Harry said with an upward inflection in his voice. He then smirked at the men surrounding him. "Who of you here remembers what happened during my fifth year at Hogwarts?"

Neither Shatterhand or his men initially responded to Harry's question, then one of Shatterhand's men decided to respond. "Your godfather got killed?"

Harry narrowed his eyes and turned to the man who spoke, "No. Not that." He then muttered loudly, "Thank Merlin for this reality and the constant resurrections that seem to occur frequently." Harry then turned towards Shatterhand who groaned very audibly.

"He's not going to surrender. He was talking about the time he and his friends infiltrated the Ministry of Magic and then took on a much larger force of Death Eaters and, to a large extent, emerged victorious." Shatterhand said, feeling very annoyed. He then raised his wand arm and aimed his wand at Harry, "Stun him!"

Harry immediately moved and generated a cloud of smoke via his wand. Shatterhand's men fired stunner upon stunner into the increasingly thick cloud of smoke until Shatterhand himself conjured a gust of wind. Harry disappeared in the smoke. Shatterhand and his men then began searching for Harry amongst the vehicles.

Harry stealthily stalked his attackers, having disillusioned himself, and stunned several of them. He was eventually spotted when Shatterhand saw spell fire emerge from thin air. Shatterhand fired off a few cutting curses and stunning spells which Harry barely managed to evade.

Shatterhand grabbed a radio from his uniform's belt and brought it up to your face. "Send more guards here ASAP!" Shatterhand barked down the radio.

Upon hearing Shatterhand summon more guards, Harry knew it was time to go. He realised that Shatterhand and his men forgot to put up anti-portkey wards and ran into a truck which contained unconscious enemy soldiers and captured equipment and had a canvas roof. Spellfire tore through the canvas roof but Harry kept his head down. After a few minutes, the spellfire ceased and Harry raised his head up.

"Surrender Potter. We have you surrounded. Come out of the truck with your hands up!" Shatterhand called out. Harry poked his head out of the truck and saw that Shatterhand's men were creeping towards the truck with their wands aimed at it. Harry began mass activating the portkeys attached to all the vehicles, the portkeys being timed.

"You know, you've all forgotten about a very basic rule of war." Harry taunted his attackers.

"Which is... what?" Shatterhand questioned in an almost bored tone of voice. He had been smiling and it was rapidly disappearing.

"Always make sure that your enemy has no way out of a problematic situation." Harry said grinning at the enemy soldiers who suddenly realised that they had forgotten to put up either anti-apparition or anti-portkey wards and stumbled trying to erect some. They were too late and the portkeys fully activated, taking Harry and the guards that he had captured along with the parked vehicles away from the mountain base.

Shatterhand seeing his prey escape him grimace and held on to his wand tightly. He fired a reducto at a nearby wall to vent his anger, narrowly missing several of his followers.

"I don't want to be the guy that says it, but, it was impressive the way he managed to get away from us." One of his followers said in a admiring tone. The follower then began walking back to the main section of the base unaware that he was not being followed and didn't see the scowls of the other followers and of Shatterhand himself.

With renewed anger, Shatterhand fired a pair of bone breaker curses at his unaware follower. His follower screamed in agony, his left leg and right arm not only at unnatural angles but bone showed through parts of his uniform. "Get him healed up." Shatterhand said angrily as he marched back to the helipad at the construction site of the mountain base.

His followers levitated the injured man in front of them, following their leader to the base.

Harry felt the truck he was in land and he cautiously peered out of the canvas covered back of the truck. Seeing that he was back at his base, he crawled out of the truck in exhaustion and tumbled onto the ground, landing on his back.

As he lay on his back, Harry had just one thought at the forefront of his mind and said it out loud. "I could've just apparated out of the prison when I escaped so why didn't I?"

Harry then saw his own followers approaching him and gave a little roll of his eyes and said to himself, "Oh yeah, that's right. I care about people." With that last thought said out loud, he fell unconscious.

A/N- Please review and I hope you have enjoyed this chapter. Next Chapter should be done in a month or two so please look forward to it.

A/A/N- When you think of the Mountain base in this chapter, please take a look at the research lab area in MGS: Portable Ops and think of it with expanded dimensions, extra buildings and much bigger vehicle parking areas. If you've played the game then you should know what I am talking about. If you haven't played the game, I highly recommend it. It originally was released on PSP hence it's title, Portable Ops.
