After Mario's latest duel and showing off his skills in front of the entire student body, the trio returned to his and Roll's dorm to complete the deck they made for their friend Izzy. As they were walking, Izzy was thinking about some things. The way Mario won his duel, despite not even looking at what deck or cards he picked, amazed and made the girl wonder.
Izzy stopped as Roll noticed her while Mario entered the dorm to fetch the item.
"What's wrong, Izzy?" asked Roll.
"Be honest. Did your brother know which deck he grabbed?" questioned Izzy.
"No," answered Roll honestly.
"It's just... the way he played that deck. He played it like a pro duelist," stated the girl.
"Well... we have some experience playing the game," said Roll.
"A lot of experience, it looks like," said Izzy as Roll turned her back to her friend, and she gave a quiet sigh. "So, where did you guys learn so much?"
"It's... a secret," said Roll.
While the girl was speaking with her friend, her brother went upstairs and began retrieving the box Izzy touched earlier without his permission.
"This is exactly what I didn't want to happen. Now everybody knows. God, I hope they forget seeing me." stated the boy as he opened the box and began to sift through it. "Now, where is it? Ah, here it is." Mario managed to find what he was looking for as he put the box on his bed and began to head back downstairs, where his sister and Izzy were waiting.
"Took me a while, but here you go, Izzy. It's yours," said the boy as he handed the card to the girl.
"You sure?"
"We're not gonna have this conversation again! Just take it, and that's it!" said Mario, grabbing her wrist and placing the card in her hand.
"Okay. Thanks," said the girl as she hugged him.
"Let go of me," demanded the boy as she obeyed but decided to pat his head.
Izzy then placed the card he gave her on the deck that the pair had made for her as she looked at it. There, in her hand, was her very own deck. A gift that the two siblings put together for her. It was surreal to think that this item in her hand was officially hers. The girl slotted the deck into her duel disk as the device scanned it.
"Scanning... Registration complete... ID user - Izzy Moonbow. Deck: Scrap/Junk..."
Izzy's duel disk had done its final scanning as it inputted her data into the system. Her duel disk came online as it projected a blue card tray before retracting.
"There you go. You now have your own deck," said Mario as he stood in front of Izzy with his arms crossed.
"I can't believe it. My very own deck. So... this is what it's like," muttered Izzy, as this was the first time she could call something like this her own. "Thank you."
"Don't mention it, Izzy. It's just what friends do. They help each other." said Roll.
"Now you're all set to handle anybody who challenges you. However, it's now your responsibility to make that deck your own. We gave you the tools. Now it's up to you to see what you can do with it." said Mario as he gave Izzy some advice.
Roll smiled a bit when she heard her brother say that. Mainly because what he was saying was something their father told them when they first began.
"Don't worry. I'll make sure I practice hard," said Izzy. "So... can me, and you practice?"
"No," answered Mario immediately.
"Please?"
"No."
"Please?"
"No!"
"Ple..."
"I said NO!" shouted the boy as the girl's antics started getting on his nerves.
"How bout me and you duel, Izzy?" stated Roll, trying to not let her friend annoy her big brother even more.
"Okay," said the girl as she didn't think twice about this.
"Roll, what are you doing?" said Mario to his sis silently.
"Look, you don't want to do it, so I'm just taking it upon myself," said the girl to her brother.
Roll was shown having her hand reached to her side, as there was a deck box. She unclipped it, pulled out her personal deck, and looked at it while taking a deep breath. She looked at her brother as he was still hesitant about her doing this. But... if there was one thing he knew and loved about his little sibling, when she put her mind to something, she didn't stop until it was accomplished.
Mario stepped to the side. The girl hugged her older brother for a moment as she approached Izzy. The pair were now standing meters apart as they were about to have their duel. Roll looked at her deck as, in one swift motion, she slotted it into her duel disk as it projected a yellow card tray. The rush and adrenaline surged through the girl as it was a feeling she used to have when she was younger. And now... she was feeling it again in quite some time.
"Ready, Izzy?" said Roll.
"Ready," responded the girl as her duel disk projected a blue card tray.
"Then let's duel!" stated both girls.
"Opponent detected. Streaming data. Duel mode set. Initiating. Commencing duel." said the AI of their duel disks.
Roll's Life Points: 8000-
Izzy's Life Points: 8000-
The girls each drew their opening hand as the image of Izzy flashed to indicate that she would have the first turn.
Turn 1 - Izzy (Hand 5)
"Okay, let's see here," said the girl, drawing her card and looking at her hand.
"Just remember to take it slow, Izzy," said Roll, advising her friend.
"Got it. Well, in that case, since I currently control no monsters, I can special summon this monster, Junk Forward(900/1500), in defense mode!" A warrior in green appeared as he raced in front of the girl and took a position. "Then I'll summon my Scrap Recycler(900/1200) in defense mode! And when he's summoned, I can send 1 Machine-type monster from my deck."
Izzy then touched the screen on her duel disk; her entire deck appeared on the screen, showing the list of monsters she had. She was now scrolling through and reading their effects to see which one she wanted to eliminate. She tapped on the card and confirmed her choice as it was slotted out for her to grab. She then slotted into her graveyard slot.
"I then end my turn."
Turn 2: Roll (Hand 5)
"Not bad, Izzy," said Roll as she drew her card.
The girl looked at her cards and was glad to be reunited with them.
"I'll start you off easy. I summon Mermaid Shark(100/300) in defense mode!" A shark appeared as it jumped out of some water, as the nose of the shark had a mermaid on it. "When this card is Normal Summoned, I can add 1 Level 3, 4, or 5 Fish-type monster from my deck to my hand. And I know which one I want. I choose my Silent Angler." stated Roll as her duel disk ejected the monster she wanted; she grabbed it, and her deck shuffled itself.
"Then, since I control a Water monster, I can special summon my Silent Angler(800/1400) to the field!" declared Roll as she summoned the monster she had just got, also in defense mode. A large angler fish appeared and snapped its jaws.
"That's it for now. Your move, Iz."
Turn 3: Izzy (Hand 4)
"My turn," said the girl as she drew and began to look at her cards. "So, since I have a "Junk" monster on my field, I can special summon this guy from my hand. Junk Servant(1500/1000)!" A machine in red appeared as he landed with a thud. "Now, I'll have my Junk Servant attack your Silent Angler!"
Izzy's monster then raced forward, returning its fist and nailing Roll's fish in the face. It shattered and was destroyed.
"I then end my turn."
Turn 4: Roll (Hand 5)
"My turn, I draw," said Roll as she drew her card. "I play the spell card, Surface. Now I can target one Water monster in my graveyard and summon it in defense mode. So my Silent Angler is back in play!" stated the girl as her fish reappeared. "But there's more. Since I played a spell, I can special summon this guy from my hand. Time to chomp at the bits, Big Jaws(1800/300)!"
A whirlpool of small water appeared as it burst apart to reveal a shark with giant razor-sharp jaws and an extra fin on its head that was also sharp.
"Next, I'm summoning my Drill Barnacle(300/0)!" stated Roll as she summoned another monster. "Now, time to attack. Big Jaws, take out her Junk Servant!"
The shark swam ahead as it had its mouth open. In one swim by, it had the monsters in its jaws and bit down on it as it shattered and was destroyed.
Izzy's Life Points: 7700-
"Now, Drill Barnacle, your turn!" declared Roll.
Her monster had the drills on its spin as it fired one of them directly at Izzy, who was thrown onto her behind to the ground.
Izzy's Life Points: 7400-
"Hey, wait a minute! How can you attack me directly when I still have monsters on my field?" asked Izzy as she sat up.
"Cause of Drill Barnacle's ability," shouted Mario, standing off to the side, "It can attack an opponent directly. Plus, when it does damage, it gains 1000 attack points."
"Ohh... uh-oh," said Izzy as she registered what that meant as Roll's monster gained even more power.
"Don't worry, Izzy. I'm not gonna be cheap and win just by having my Drill Barnacle chip you out every turn," stated Roll as she found that to be no fun in winning.
"Aw, thanks," smiled the girl, seeing how considerate her friend was.
"But I am gonna do something else. 'Cause I still got one more trick up my sleeve. I overlay my Level 3 Drill Barnacle and Big Jaws to build the Overlay Network!" shouted Roll as her two monsters turned into orbs of light and hovered into the air. A portal opened before her as the orbs entered, and a pillar of light emerged. "Now I summon a monster that's both feared on the land and in the water. I Xyz Summon, Submersible Carrier Aero Shark(1900/1000, OLU: 2)!" A pair of sharks attached to a flying device appeared as they growled.
"One more thing, Izzy. I activate Aero Shark's ability!" said Roll as she pulled out one of the monsters stacked under Aero Shark's card on her colored card tray and sent it to the graveyard as it sparkled. "By using one overlay unit, I can deal 400 points of damage for every card in my hand. And I'm holding three, so you're getting blasted with 1200 points of damage! Torpedo Launch!"
The monster fired a shell with several missiles in as they broke apart. They bombarded the area around Izzy as the girl put her arm up to cover herself as explosions occurred. They soon stopped as she stood panting a bit, feeling the power of Roll's monster.
Izzy's Life Points: 6200-
"I'll now end my turn," smiled Roll.
Turn 5: Izzy (Hand 4)
"Time to get serious. I draw," said the girl, looking at her hand and field. "I'll play the spell card, One for One. So I send a monster from my hand to the graveyard, and then I can special summon one Level 1 monster from my hand or deck. So I'm summoning my Tuningware(100/300)!" The girl sent a card from her hand to the graveyard slot of her duel disk, and from her deck, a card ejected as she grabbed it and played it as her deck shuffled itself.
"I then summon my Quick-Span Knight(1000/800)!" said Izzy as a small knight coated in silver with a face and tiny wrench appeared.
"So, Izzy has a Tuner on her field?" said Mario, taking note of what monster she had just summoned.
"What does that mean?" asked Pipp as she had been secretly watching the duel and standing beside Mario.
"It means she can Synchro Summon," said Mario as he explained that to Pipp, clearly not bothered by the fact she appeared out of nowhere. "Hey, there."
"H-Hey," said Pipp as she waved at the boy she was fascinated with. "You're not surprised to see me?"
"Believe it or not... I kinda expected someone," explained Mario, "So... what do you want?"
"W-Well, I happen to see your duel, and it's trending. You would not believe the likes that it got," said Pipp as she showed her phone to the boy and played the video she showed of Mario winning. "Everyone is totally talking about you."
"Oh, shit!" said the boy, as this was the worst outcome possible.
Back with the duel...
"Uh, Izzy. Can I say something?"
"Sure. What is it?"
"So, you remember what I said about Tuner monsters and what they do?" said Roll.
Izzy just had a blank stare as she looked out of it.
"Huh? Oh! Sorry, I zoned out there for a second. What were you saying? Ooooooooooooooh!" said the girl as she recalled what she and Mario had said. "Well, in that case, I'll activate the other effect of my Scrap Recycler before I do that. Once per turn, I can return two Level 4 Machine-type Earth monsters from my graveyard to my hand, and then I can draw a card." Izzy's duel disk ejected her Scrap Raptor and Orthos from her graveyard slot as she grabbed them and placed them on her deck. The auto shuffler kicked in as she then drew a card.
"Now, I'll do what you said, I tune my Level 3 Quick-Span Knight with my Tuningware, and when I use Tuningware for a Synchro Summon, it can count as a Level 2!" Izzy's two monsters leaped into the air as her Quick-Span Knight turned into three giant green rings as her Tuningware leaped into between them as light shined through. "I Synchro Summon, Scarred Warrior(2100/1000)!" A warrior covered in white armor had a sword pop out from his left gauntlet.
"She actually did it," said Mario, surprised that Izzy did her first-ever Synchro Summon.
"Since I used Tuningware to Synchro Summon, I can draw a card. Then I'll have my new monster attack your Aero Shark," instructed Izzy as her warrior lunged forward. It uttered a cry, bringing its sword down on the twin sharks as they were destroyed.
Roll's Life Points: 7800-
"Nice one, Izzy," said Roll as she praised the girl for being able to take out one of her monsters.
"Thanks," smiled the girl. "I end my turn."
Turn 6: Roll (Hand 3)
"My turn," said Roll as she drew her card, "And I'll tribute my Mermaid Shark so I can special summon this! Sharkraken(2400/2100)!" A shark appeared, and on its fins were tentacles as it growled. "Sharkraken, take a bit out of her Scarred Warrior!"
Roll's monster swam forward with its jaws snapping as Izzy's monster defended himself by having his sword block the creature's jaws.
"Scarred Warrior's ability activates. Once per turn, it can't be destroyed by battle!" said Izzy as her monster managed to hold off the shark as its armor was damaged.
"That may be, but you still take damage," said Roll.
Izzy's Life Points: 5900-
"I end my turn with a facedown."
Turn 7: Izzy (Hand 4)
"My turn and I'll play the equip spell, United We Stand. So now my Scarred Warrior gains 800 extra attack points for every face-up monster I control. So thanks to himself and my Junk Forward, he gets 1600 extra attack points for a grand total of 3700." said Izzy as her monster was now stronger than her opponent's. "Now attack!"
"Not this time. I reveal the trap, Poseidon Wave! With this card, I can negate your attack!" shouted Roll as a huge wave washed before her and blocked Izzy's monster from attacking. "And there's more. You take 800 points of damage for every face-up Fish, Sea Serpent, or Aqua monster I control. And I have two!" The tidal wave then rushed forward as it was heading for Izzy and her field; the wave washed over the girl, as she didn't seem to mind the free waterslide she got.
Izzy's Life Points: 4300-
"Wee!" said Izzy as she finished riding the wave and shook her clothes off.
"You good?" asked Roll.
"I'm okay," responded Izzy with a wave.
"Anything else you're gonna do?" asked Roll.
"Nope, I end my turn."
Turn 8: Roll (Hand 2)
"My turn, and I summon my Silent Wobby(1000/2000)! And during the turn, he's Normal Summoned; I can change the position of one of your monsters to face-up defense mode. And I choose your Scarred Warrior." said Roll as Izzy's monster changed modes. "Then... I can take control of it!"
"What?" exclaimed Pipp as she was shocked to hear that. And even more shocked to see Izzy's monster appear on Roll's side of the field.
"Next, I activate the spell, Falling Current! Now I target one face-up monster I control and declare a Level between 1-3. Whatever number I choose, I can either increase or decrease that monster's level by that number. So I choose your Scarred Warrior and have it lose a level!" declared Roll as Scarred Warrior changed from Level 5 to Level 4.
"Why did your sister do that?" asked Pipp.
"'Cause she's about to win," smiled Mario.
"I overlay my Level 4 Silent Angler, Silent Wobby, and Scarred Warrior. With these 3 monsters, I build the Overlay Network!" All three monsters changed into orbs of light as a portal opened before the girl. They all entered as a pillar of light emerged. "Make way for the killer of my deck; rise up from the briny depths of the sea. I Xyz Summon, Number 32: Shark Drake(2800/2300, OLU: 2)!" Eyes were shown peering through a surge of water as one growl later, it burst apart to reveal a large shark with black skin and stood on two legs.
"Game over, Izzy," said Roll as she was about to end it. "Shark Drake, attack her Junk Forward! Deep Sea Destruction!" The creature then unleashed a water beam attack, destroying the monster easily. "Now I activate Shark Drake's ability; whenever it destroys a monster, I can use an overlay unit to bring that monster back in attack mode, but it loses 1000 attack points, and... my Shark Drake can attack it again!"
Junk Forward now appeared on Izzy's side of the field as it had zero attack points. Shark Drake opened its mouth again, firing another attack that took out the monster but dealt a massive hit to Izzy's life points.
Izzy's Life Points: 1500-
"Now... Sharkraken, end this duel and attack her directly!" shouted Roll as she thrust her hand out.
Her other monster swam forward as it was charging at the defenseless girl. With one bash, it knocked Izzy to the ground as the attack was registered, and she lost the rest of her life points.
Izzy's Life Points: 0-
Winner: Roll
The duel ended as the monsters disappeared. Roll made her way to where Izzy was; before she could help the girl up, she got to her feet.
"Wow! Now that... was a doozy!" said Izzy as she dusted herself off. "So... how did I do?"
"For a first duel with a new deck... not bad," stated Roll. "You got the basics down; now you need to work on the more advanced stuff."
"Your sister is really talented," stated Pipp as she and Mario watched Izzy and Roll speak.
"Y-yeah, she is. She knows her deck inside and out," responded the boy. For a moment, Mario recalled a memory.
(Flashback)
"Take him down, Shark Drake!" shouted a younger Roll.
The younger girl gave a command to her monster as it rushed toward her brother, who stood there with one of the signature monsters of his deck. Her brother was holding a worried look as her monster was about to connect when a blinding light appeared. It forced Roll and her monster to look away for a second; when the girl turned back as the light died, she saw her brother's monster in the air above Shark Drake. The shadow zoomed down and delivered a chop that collided with her creature. It was a standstill before her monster was destroyed as she lost the last bit of her life points.
Roll fell to her hands and knees as she looked up to see her brother. The young boy was standing there with a smile over the fact he beat his little sibling again.
"AW!" shouted Roll as she punched the ground beside her.
"That's five to five, sis," said a young Mario as the two siblings had been going at it for quite a while, and they managed to tie up again.
"One more!" yelled Roll, as she wasn't going to give her older sibling the satisfaction that he was better than her when she was clearly the better one.
Before either could start up their duel disks to go another round...
"Mario!"
"Roll, sweetie! Come on, we're leaving!"
"Coming, Mom and Dad!" called out the two siblings.
"Guess we'll have to settle this later," stated Roll.
"Hop on!" said Mario as he gestured for his sister to get on his back to give her a ride.
Roll jumped onto her brother as he began to give her a piggyback ride as they headed to where their parents were.
(End of Flashback)
Mario had finished recollecting a past time when he heard a camera snapping. He looked to his side as he saw Pipp had taken a photo and was dwindling her fingers on her phone.
"What are you doing?" asked Mario.
"Posting online the latest duel with your little sister," said Pipp.
"Why?" asked the boy.
"For the likes, of course," scoffed Pipp as she finished posting her latest video. "Also, smile."
Mario made a confused face when Pipp snapped a pic; it blinded his eyes as he rubbed them.
"Oh, that is not your good side," said Pipp as she looked at the photo.
"Why did you do that?!" asked Mario as he blinked, slowly gaining his vision back.
"Hey, big bro. Who's this?" asked Roll as she and Izzy appeared before the pair.
After a quick introduction, the four teens were inside Mario and Roll's dorm as they gathered around the living room. Upon entering, Pipp was taking how lucky the two siblings were to have this private space all to their own and not share a dorm building with others. The girl quickly introduced herself, explaining how she bumped into Mario moments after he walked away from his sister.
"So, how are you two so good?" asked Pipp.
"What do you mean?" asked Mario.
"What I mean is how are you two so good for just first years?" asked Pipp. "Most students with their own deck only know the simple basics and common plays they always do. But you two... you do things differently."
"Well, we just... grew up with Duel Monsters. It was... a big part of our lives growing up," answered Roll.
"So, I don't want to intrude, but could you do me a solid and look over my deck? Give me advice as you did with Izzy," asked Pipp as she pulled out the deck her mother gave her before she left.
"Big bro," snickered Roll.
"The things I do," muttered the boy as he grabbed Pipp's deck and spread them out in front of him as he looked over the cards and concentrated.
"So... you like my brother?" whispered Roll to Pipp as she gasped.
"Whaaaaa?" said Pipp, waving her hand dismissively.
"Believe me, this isn't the first time I've seen a girl look at my brother that way," smiled Roll. "So... between you and me, you sure? I mean, come on, look at you. You can do better than my brother?"
"Izzy!" shouted Mario as the girl tried to distract him while he was working.
"He's got a certain charm to him," confessed Pipp.
"Sure," scoffed Roll, taking a shot at her brother. "But if you want some advice, tell him the real you. My bro is someone who likes people who are true to themselves. It's a lesson our parents kept enforcing on us. If you can give him a good time in a duel, that's a bonus."
"I'll take that under advisement," responded Pipp.
"You said your mother just picked this out for you? Just went to a store and asked her servants to grab the first thing they saw?" questioned the boy.
"Servant is a harsh word, more like assistants," clarified Pipp. "But, yeah."
"Well, this is a solid deck to start with," said Mario as he finished looking through Pipp's deck and found it to be fine just the way it was. "You said your mom gave you this deck?"
"Yeah, a gift she gave us to my sister and me."
"Well, she must have gotten some good advice on what cards to pick. Not bad," said Mario as he put the cards together and handed them to the girl.
"Guess my mom had help from experts," said Pipp.
"By the way, Pipp, what does your mother do?" asked Izzy.
"Well, she's very business. She runs her own company of finances, stocks, and even some beauty products," answered Pipp.
"Wow, so you're rich, in a sense?" asked Mario.
"If you call living in a fancy mansion all your life rich... then yeah," said Pipp.
"I love having anybody who could fetch me glitter whenever I want. Sounds like fun," said Izzy.
Soon the sound on their duel disks was heard, as it meant it was five minutes till curfew started.
"Well, looks like me and Izzy need to head back to our dorms. But hey, it was nice meeting you," stated Pipp.
"Nice to meet you too," said Roll.
"See you guys tomorrow. I can already see this year is gonna be the best!" said Izzy as the two returned to their dorms to avoid curfew.
"So... why didn't you tell me about your girlfriend?" teased Roll.
"Shut the hell up!" stated Mario, as he wouldn't deal with this.
"I mean, I was gonna find out either way. You two are going to be taking the Fusion Courses," said Roll as she leaned against the door with her arms crossed.
"Great... I get to see her more," mocked Mario, as he was not in the mood to handle his sister's antics.
"Oh, and by the way, I gave her your number."
"WHAT?!" shouted the boy, glaring at his little sister.
Roll smiled as she began to run. Mario was looking to strangle her for giving Pipp his number as he could already hear the nonstop text messages she would send him. As the boy was trying to get his hands on his sister in the school's main office, Luna and Celestia were looking over the latest data that was coming in. As both women expected, the students would start having duels as soon as they got their cards and decks. And they were happy to see so many ecstatic young kids wanting to showcase their skills.
"Well, sister," asked Celestia.
"As expected, Tia. The students have already taken to dueling against each other. And believe it or not, the two we expected have shown some incredible results." stated Luna.
"It seems this year is shaping up to be one of the best," smiled Celestia, looking out her window as she sensed this would be one of those years.
Author's Note: Not bad for a first attempt by Izzy, though like with most new things, you may fall flat on your face in the beginning, with practice and dedication, you'll get better at it. In addition, seeing that Roll also possessessimilar skills just like her brother. And the type of deck she uses is a Water deck that's full of different types of monsters. And like any sibling, she messes with her older sibling by giving the girl who has a crush on him his number against his wishes.
