Chapter 31: Cheering Up a Valkyrie
To any outsider of Kyoto, it was a bizarre sight to see the great plaza of Kurama royal palace that seemed to spacious filled to the brim with Yokai, human, and any miscellaneous Moonlit species who were invited. To the residents of Kyoto, it was just their Lord Kurama throwing a special party for either of his children; with this year being Kunou. Large tents were set up on either side going as far as the palace walls for the guests settled in seats while they treated themselves a buffet prepared by the palace chefs. Sake was regularly served and shared on each table followed with cheers.
"Lively as ever." Shirou commented to his father. "You really go overboard."
"Can't really tone it down, can I?" Kurama responded.
"Hey, a party's a party." Naruto said. "I certainly have no complaints for this."
The royal family had their own table situated at a platform raised before the central part of the plaza that would serve as the tournament's arena. Kurama and Yasaka sat in the direct center where a royal tent was built over them. At Yasaka's side was Kunou, Nartu, and Kushina. Kurahime, Shirou, and Ereshkigal sat on Kurama's right side. The table itself was low enough for the family to sit in sieza.
"Naruto-kun." Spoke a silky voice.
The youngest son of Kurama immediately stilled not from the voice, but as lithe arms wrapped his shoulders and he could feel twin 'pillows' pressing on his back. His head turned to stare in small amazement at the beautiful woman who had snuck behind him to press her body against his back. She had blonde hair a few shades lighter than Naruto's golden locks and was tied into a singular tight braid going down her back. Generous D-cup breasts were hidden underneath a dark grey yukata wrapped by a purple obi decorated in black flowers. Light blue eyes from an angular face looked at Naruto with a mix of affection and amusing mirth with just a touch of lust as her hands started to roam across Naruto's chest. Atop her head was a pair of blonde-furred cat ears and featured three cat tails for the woman was one of the remaining nekoshou alive. The kitsune didn't need to look at the Yokai to know who it was as an affectionate smile spread across his face.
"Hi, Yugito-chan." Naruto greeted, giving his fiance a kiss on her soft lips.
Yugito purred in the kiss and when they broke off started to snuggle her face into the crook of the kitsune's neck. Pleased purrs escaped the neko's throat as Naruto reached up to scratch the back of her hears. Kushina, Kurahime, and Shirou smiled at the lovable interaction between their brother and his fiance while Kunou looked at the scene hoping to have a new sister. Kurama merely chuckled under his breath as he treated himself to a sip of green tea.
Yasaka on the other hand narrowed her eyes in a rare moment of distaste. It was not directed towards toward Yugito, far from it. In fact, the golden kitsune absolutely adored the nekoshou and the affection she shares with her son Naruto. However, if Yugito was here then that meant she wasn't far behind. Her suspicions were correct when a pair of arms circled around both herself and her husband together with both hands in front of them brandishing full bottles of sake.
"Hey, Ku-kun, Ya-chan." Announced a woman's voice with a boisterous tone accompanied by a few hiccups. "So good to see you two~."
The head of the voice poked between Kurama and Yasaka. revealing a face of peach skin framed by bangs of wild hair colored in dark and blue strands. Two cat ears colored dark blue on top of her head showed her as a nekoshou as well, but from her back waved nine cat tails. She wore a very loose yukata of dark blue tied by a white obi that showed more of a F-cup bust than should be appropriate. Her eyes were heterochromatic with the left one being yellow and the right a light green. By the blush on her cheeks, she was already tipsy.
"Matatabi." Yasaka almost hissed.
"Mou~, why so grumpy Ya-chan?" Said Matatabi with a pout. "I'm just here to say hi, and what's a party without some booze too?"
Matatabi despite her attitude, was one of the strongest Yokai. Her and Kurama numbered two of the four Yokai who rival in power to that of the Underworld's four Maou, with Kurama and Sirzechs being very much in equal. She is the strongest nekoshou in all of Shinto history as the first to have achieved nine tails in power. For centuries, Matatabi has reigned as the head of the nekomata clans, and it was because of her that the nekoshou race were not so annihilated by the devil's massacre to a number so few. During the time when the devils tried to exterminate the nekoshou clan, it was one of the times Yasaka was reminded how powerful Matatabi was having fought back wave after wave of devils who ever tried to hurt her family. While she may not show it, Matatabi had a very intense hatred of devils for killing so many of her people.
The reason for Yasaka's dislike for Matatabi was more to the fact the nekoshou had tendency to tease Kurama and invading his husband's personal space. It stemmed from when they were both children so many centuries ago, and with all of Matatabi's constant teasing it made Yasaka feel a sense of livid possessiveness. Polygamy may be a thing in the supernatural, but Yasaka made it very, very clear Kurama was hers and any hussy thinking they can get their grubby hands on her husband will meet her wrath.
Of course, now it was more of an antic for Matatabi to do so, especially in her drunken stupor. Years ago, Matatabi did couple with a human male and from that she gave birth to Yugito. As Kurama and Matatabi were old friends since childhood, it was natural Naruto and Yugito themselves of similar age grew close as well. Years went by and now Yasaka sees them as a wonderful couple she almost wants to squeal in joy at.
"Do you have to bring alcohol here?" Yasaka said in a disappointed tone. "It may be a public party, but we have children here. It's Kunou's birthday after all."
Matatabi waved it off. "Bah! A party's isn't one without something to make you go fuzzy! Heh-heh."
The daughter of the Shin Yokai of the nekoshou's sweatdropped. "Okaa-sama..."
"This is why I stay sober." Commented Kurama.
"Agreed!" Spoke Shirou, Kushina, Naruto, Yasaka, and Yugito in unison.
Kurahime on the other hand did not voice the same with her family. Instead, she shrunk into her kimono as she secretly took sips from a sharing of sake.
"So lame..." Matatabi muttered under her breath.
The nekoshou perked up as mismatched eyes landed on the birthday girl herself. Kunou smiled brightly at Matatabi having known the Yokai for as long as she could remember. To Kunou, Matatabi was always so kind and funny, making her basically like a funny aunt.
"Happy birthday, Kunou-chan." Chirped Matatabi. "Tell me, how are you becoming now?"
"Twelve." Answered Kunou.
"So..." Matatabi said, bringing up a bottle of sake, "want to try - hrk!"
"I suggest you not try to make my youngest daughter drunk." Yasaka hissed as she poked Matatabi in the side with a burst of chakra to stun her.
Instead of cowering down to Yasaka's glare, the nekoshou gave the kitsune a cheshire grin. She let out a boisterous laugh in front of her without fear. In truth, Matatabi had no reason to actually be afraid of Yasaka. While the beauty of a golden kitsune was ranked equal with the Dragon Matriarchs, Matatabi herself was a Maou-class entity on par with Serafall and Falbium. The only reason she lets Yasaka have her way was due to their long-lasting friendship, and if anything else she held too much respect for Kurama to offend her wife. Much less the fact Kurama was a direct equal to Sirzechs himself.
"Guess I'll try in eight years." Matatabi said, taking a seat in front of Kurama and Yasaka. "I smell a lot of interesting guests here. Some devils, a few fallen here and there, and even a god or two."
"Yeah, yeah, Kunou wanted to invite Sirzechs' family because she is friends with his son." Kurama said, only for his eyes to widen at Matatabi's last words. "I'm sorry - what!?"
While the royal family conversed, the more important guests including Ruby and her pride settled into a seat nearest to one side of the central area just a few meters from royal table. Instead of a long lengthy one, Teams RWBY, JNPR, Sieg, and Jeanne took up two round tables set up in a western style with vases of flowers. Servants from the loyal palace, mostly Yokai of the Tengu and Inu, walked around to serve drinks while the guests themselves would line up for the food given for the party. With such a wide selection, it was understandable some went a little too far.
"Seriously Yang?" Ruby said, unflinching as Yang gorged down whatever she could grab from the buffet. "You had to grab alcohol now of all times?"
The aforementioned cousin of Ruby did not answer immediately, too busy downing a bottle of sake. If it were any other alcoholic drink, it wouldn't matter much as a dragon's body would break down the toxins too quickly. Unfortunately, Yang had grabbed a special brew from one eccentric nekoshou that managed to circumvent that. It was from Ruby's own horrid experience how effective Matatabi's brew special brew was, and Ruby was unfortunate in that Yang was now hooked on it.
"Rubwy~." Hiccupped Yang, a bright dusting on her cheeks. "Thish ish shome gwood shwit~."
"Are you seriously getting drunk right after you've signed up for the tournament?" Weiss exclaimed, treating herself to a small sushi platter. "You are going to collapse before even enter the arena."
"I hate to burst your bubble Yang, but I am gonna have to side with Ice Queen on this one." Nora agreed, for once making sense.
"Nah~." Yang waved off, taking another swig. "I'm jush a little ticklish *hic*. He-he-he!"
Ruby sighed. "Give me a moment."
The Red Dragon Empress laid a hand on Yang's shoulder. She took a moment in silence to focus her power to a precise control, causing red lightning to spark off her body. Ruby in a single motion grabbed the sake out of her cousin's grasp and flooded Yang with powerful waves of electricity. The lightning was controlled rushing into every pore of Yang's body to burn out the alcohol. All this happened in just a second, leaving the blonde blinking dazed.
"Ow!" Yang exclaimed now sober, almost falling off her seat in surprise. "Oi, give me back liquid heaven. Please~. Give it back Mommy~."
Ruby held the bottle as far away from Yang as possible while using her other hand to keep Yang back by holding her face. Weiss and Blake blinked in astonishment that was their leader performing an instant sober up. They both decided not to make a comment and enjoy the festivities as they were with the good food being provided. JNPR were certainly enjoying themselves along with Jeanne trying to feed Sieg giggling as the reincarnated saint did.
"Here." Ruby said, catching Weiss' attention as she held out the sake bottle to her. "I prefer to keep this in the hands of a proper adult."
"Of course." Weiss agreed, taking the alcohol.
"I am an adult!" Yang argued.
"Literal seconds say otherwise." Ruby fired back.
A scent hit Ruby's nose and her aggression levels rose from the potent divinity. She had to hold down a growl in her throat and keep her dragon side in check. Ruby turned around with her green eyes scanning the crowd until they landed on the obvious foreigners of this party dressed in attire that was definitely Norse. There was a valkyrie with long white and blue eyes wearing a metal corset who looked nervous with all the people around her. Beside her as if she was escorting was tall elderly man with a long beard and an eyepatch. The name of the god escaped Ruby, but within the Boosted Gear Ddraig never forgot the look of any deity he met.
[Odin, the Allfather of the Norse Gods.] Ddraig informed, but there was an odd flatness to it.
'You seem to hold a grudge, don't you?' Ruby asked.
[Long ago, he once sought to tame me as a personal pet.] Ddraig said. [That was back in the days Odin was well known as the Hanged Lord when he was more ruthless. Looking at him now, it seems he has degenerated by such a fall I can't even compare him to his past self. I mean, look at him! A great warrior and king, now a depraved slave to lust.]
As proof to Ddraig's words, Ruby watched with growing disgust at how the Norse god was mingling with a group of nekomata women. The blush on his face and the perverted giggles as he spoke told enough just how far the Allfather fell from his past grace. It was almost gross how this seemingly old god was trying to whoo the opposite sex, and his apparent escort looked extremely exasperated with his antics.
The nekomata women, beautiful as they were, put up smiles as Odin 'conversed' with them. Ruby can notice that they were forced and the Yokai would rather be somewhere else. She was tempted to intervene, even flat out punch the god if to sate her draconic aggression. Gods really did irk something in her blood.
She would get the chance when Kurama himself came to the scene. Ruby watched as Kurama walked from behind the nekomata women, who would then go to stand behind their leader. Odin put up a brave smile, but twitches in his cheek and beads of sweat showed his panic with an entity equal with Sirzechs. There was one-sided shouting match from Kurama causing the Allfather to cower down.
"...and if I see you harassing anymore of my people, I am blasting off of Japan and halfway across China." Concluded Kurama, his eyes glowing an ominous red as he pointed at a table farthest from the main grouping. "You stay there, Allfather. Remember, I have my ears and eyes on you."
"Y-Yes, Lord Kurama." Odin excused in a panicked tone. "You don't n-need to worry. I-I'm just a humble foreigner that shall enjoy this wonderful party."
Ruby should have expected it for a god, but it was surprising to see how one seemingly so old can move so fast. In less than a second, Odin had traversed across the party tent to the far corner where he sat mostly alone. Kurama leveled his stare on the lone valkyrie, petrifying the poor woman under his intense gaze until she relaxed seeing his sympathetic smile.
"How do you deal with that guy?" Kurama said. "Seriously, it must be hell to work for him."
The valkyrie sighed tiredly. "Well... I just... try I guess."
Kurama hummed and walked back to sit with his family. The valkyrie would have gone would have gone to Odin as his servant, but chose to stay in place instead. As Ruby continued to look at the woman, she noticed the way she fidgeted so nervously with her eyes darting around the place. It was the look of someone who was socially nervous she was a wreck, and Ruby knew it too well as she was one herself in her early school years. Training with Ddraig, Kurama, and Great Red gave Ruby the confidence to not be so nervous around crowds even if it didn't exactly help her get friends.
Her pride watched in curiosity as their Red Dragon Empress rose from her seat and made her way to the lone valkyrie. She did not notice her approach from the noisy chatter of guests in the tent and the plaza. The valkyrie just stood there so still not even sure what to do.
"Hey." Ruby called out to get the valkyrie's attention.
The Norse woman let out a frightened yelp and whipped around in a panic till her eyes beheld the Remnant-born dragon. Considering Ruby's impressive height, the valkyrie had to tilt her head up to meet the gaze of Ruby's pair of eyes of brilliant silver encased in emerald. She shivered seeing the power behind them, but was offset by the calming smile Ruby was giving to her.
"H-Hello." The valkyrie greeted, coughing into her hand to get some manner of professionalism back. "Excuse me, my name is Rossweisse from Asgard."
It was a given since it's not everyday one talks to a dragon as powerful as the one Rossweisse feels radiating waves of power. They usually keep to themselves, especially the dragon kings and Tiamat in their respective territories. Yet here was one right here and Rossweisse hoped to make a good impression unlike her boss who continues to drag their pantheon's reputation into the mud.
"Why do you deal with that mess of a god over there?" Ruby asked, glancing to Odin sulking in the corner.
"Someone has to." Rossweisse grumbled. "He will travel often to other pantheons and I have to be there to prevent a diplomatic calamity with his increasing antics. It's a good thing Lord Odin is no longer king of Asgard."
That brought a surprised look to Ruby's face. "Truly? Isn't he the chief deity of the Norse?"
"Technically, Odin still is." Rossweisse answered. "But for the last few centuries, Thor has now taken the throne of Asgard. Now here I am stuck to be his bodyguard to stop him from going too far with his perversion."
"Are you really okay with this?" Ruby pressed. "Don't worry. Let me hear out your problems."
"Honestly, it can be horrendous." Rossweisse muttered with a whimper. "Being Odin's bodyguard should be an honor, but everywhere I go I am met with looks of pity because of his debauchery. People are even avoiding me when he's around and it's difficult even talking people. At home, I can't make anymore friends, much less to the ones I have left. And the worst is that Odin keep making fun of the fact I don't have a boyfriend to everyone he meets. I always keep quiet, b-but i-it's so degrading a-and it hurts a-and I hate it all the time-"
"Woah, woah, woah, easy there." Ruby coaxed, lightly holding Rossweisse by her shoulders when the valkyrie was starting to cry. "So you had it hard, huh? That's what happens when you work in a toxic environment. I know you are a professional, and you were told this job with Odin was a 'high' honor, right? Is it really what it is cracked up to be?"
Rossweisse sniffed. "No, it isn't."
"Let me tell you something that someone should have." Ruby said, lightly jabbing at Rossweisse. "You deserve better than this. Not some so-called honorable duty to be Odin's cleanup. You are better than this. Chief deity or not, you don't have to take his shit. Just ditch him and make something for yourself. Don't let something like this push you around."
"Y-You're right!" Rossweisse exclaimed, the look in her eyes showing Ruby succeeded. "This is my life! I-I don't have to be some sort of babysitter for some lecherous old creep. Who does he think he is saying that I fail at having a boyfriend!? He wants to run Asgard's rep into the mud, he can do himself."
Ruby grinned widely, showing off her sharp teeth. "There's the fervor of the valkyrie right there. You do what you want and don't let anyone stop you."
"Thank you." Rossweisse said softly, coming down from her emotional high. "Ah, excuse me, but this entire time I didn't catch your name."
"My bad." Ruby said. "The name's Ruby. Ruby Rose."
"Then thank you again, Ruby." Rossweisse said. "I'll take these words to heart. I... I really needed that. Who knows what would have happened if I kept going on like that. I'd probably find myself in some devil's peerage just to get away, but I love more home more than I can admit."
"No problem." Ruby said. "Just remind the world why the valkryies of Asgard are to be feared."
Suddenly, there was a great bang brought on by Kurama tapping the pavement with his black staff. From it came a pulse of raw power that quiet down the whole party and directed all attention, including Sirzechs, to the kitsune royalty. Kunou the birthday girl was the picture of elegant calm like her mother, but her nine tails waving behind her gave away to her excitement. Her older brother Naruto looked like he was ready to leap into action, but was held back by the present of his older siblings.
"Good day to you all who have been invited to my youngest daughters." Kurama bellowed, his voice enhanced by his chakra. "To all those who have been here for the previous years, you know what's going to happen. But for those new here, allow me to explain. It's a little tradition that we host on this day made into a small fighter's tournament just for some classic entertainment. Get the blood pumping in excitement and really my girl's a big fan of it all. So what incentive is there to test yourself in a contest of strength? Well, how does fifty kilograms of refined chakra crystal to the winner sound like."
Brows were raised from Ruby's pride at the strange idea of 'chakra' crystals as the reward for the winner, yet not knowing their value due to their limited knowledge. However, they practically felt the greedy gazes from the people around them as if they were in arms reach of a sure win lottery ticket. Even Ruby's emerald eyes were glazed with sheer want that can only come about of a dragon's greed to attain more treasure. So much so that Ruby's control on her human form was slipping into her semi-dragon state with the appearance of red scales and golden horns.
"Ruby, why is everyone getting so amped up about some 'chakra' crystals?" Yang whispered to her cousin, snapping Ruby out of her trance.
"Guess I should explain really." Ruby said. "Chakra crystals are invaluable, easily one of most in the supernatural world. They are made of highly condensed chakra energy and have similar properties to a Philosopher's Stone. Just one of them in the hands of a Senjutsu user can make them Ultimate-class in power, and if done right can make a regular human strong enough to take on a dragon one-on-one. The only to get them is only through Kurama and for good reason. Just a handful of them would get buy me fourteen Vales and the entire Atlas military."
"Eh?!" Weiss responded intelligently, her brain unable to comprehend how something in such small quantity could get that kind of money.
Yang's eyes widened when she came to an epiphany. "Ruby, you mentioned you won this before. As in-"
"Do I have a treasure trove of chakra crystals along with anything else of prestigious value I picked up for myself?" Ruby said quickly, her eyes momentarily turning into slits. "Well, yeah - but I'm not telling you where it is. It's mine!"
Yang wisely kept quiet, not wanting to test her luck by pressing for more information. The look in Ruby's eyes was not human, but one of primal greed belonging to a dragon.
"Sign ups have already been done long ago, so too bad for any losers here who wanted to get a chance." Kurama concluded. "This is going into a tournament style with a bracket system, so let's get this show on the road. For the first match, it shall be Naruto Otsutsuki vs Ruby Rose."
"Oh hell yeah!" Cried the third son of Kurama.
The blonde kitsune leaped out from his seat with his family, flipping through the air and landing on his feet in the central plaza that would serve as the arena. He brandished a bo staff twirling it skillfully around his form and taking a power stance. Orange pigmentation surrounding his golden eyes already showed that Naruto was already using Senjutsu. It was necessary given who his opponent was after all.
As for the second contestant of the first bout of this tournament, Ruby walked with a proud stride to the plaza. She fully let go of her human form into her semi-dragon, unveiling her crimson wings and growing out her scaly tail topped with golden spines. The crowd made way for Ruby as she went with some giving her looks of fear from the raw draconic power she emitted. From her lips stretched in a grin released tongues of red flame and electric sparks as she stared down at her opponent. Naruto, unlike most, returned that grin with his nine tails poised like snakes ready to be used in battle. Only when Ruby entered the plaza did she speak.
"Don't cry too much when you lose, Naruto." Ruby taunted.
"Huh weird." Naruto responded. "I was thinking the same thing when I am kicking you out of the ring."
By all accounts, the first bout will be quite intense. Both combatants are Ultimate-class as beings capable of easily leveling cities, much less the plaza of Kurama's palace. Fortunately, with a tap of his black staff black marking stretched across the ground. These were the eastern sealing arts used by the Yokai that acted in the same manner as Bounded Field and the formula Kurama used made sure any damage was kept at the minimum and the spectators were kept safe from harm.
"Are the fighters ready?" Kurama stated, glancing between his son and student. "Hajime!"
Naruto was the first to explode into action creating a bang from the release of his chakra. In an instant, the whole side belonging to Naruto was filled with physical copies of himself all made of chakra. It was far faster than Ruby's version of the technique and they all brandished a copy of the kitsune's bo staff. Despite the fact she was outnumbered, Ruby's smile did not go away.
At once, the small army of Narutos kicked off with a speed of a bullet. Some of them disappearing from sight entirely to reappear at Ruby's flanks. Three took the first attack, one at the front, another from behind, and a the third from above. A mere second would pass till they would make a hit on Ruby, but that was when she decided to move for the first time in the fight. Her left hand snapped behind her to backhand the Naruto clone, and she flowed through the motion to swing out her right leg to hit the Naruto in front of her, and finished leaping into the air to plant the same left fist through the Naruto clone with the aide of her red lightning.
"Relying on numbers isn't going to do you any good!" Exclaimed Ruby.
Another Naruto clone went for a thrust attack, but Ruby ducked under it to sweep its legs and then smashing down a heel to eliminate the it. The rest of her appendages were idle with her tail almost moving on its own striking at any of the Naruto clones behind Ruby like a vicious snake. Even her wings took part moving in an impressively flexible manner to slap away anyone trying to attack at her sides.
"That is... insanely good." Blake commented as she and her friends watched from the sidelines like everyone at the party.
"I get that she is unfathomably strong, but what makes you say that, partner?" Yang asked.
"She's using everything of her body to its fullest effect." Blake explained. "The way she uses her wings and tail to fight as well with her fists. Not even Faunas with similar physical characteristics have that kind of control. Right now, Ruby doesn't have any natural openings."
"Oh..." Yang responded as the implications sunk in. "Well, damn."
Back at the fight, Ruby and Naruto were in a sort of stalemate. Ruby's ultimate defense from dexterous use of her limbs left no natural openings for Naruto to exploit yet the flood of the kitsune's clones was still ongoing. It was broken when Ruby flapped her wings to gain distance from the clone horde. She kept them stretched to their full glory and between the scales emerged sparks of red electricity.
"Thunder Dragon's Shockwave."
The crowd went wild in roaring of cheers as Ruby unleashed crackling electricity and an high-pitched squealed emerged from Kunou herself. Lightning pierced through the horde of Naruto's chakra clones till all that was left was a green misty cloud from the dispersing chakra, but when it settled down there was no sign of the original.
'Where did he go?' Thought Ruby, training her senses for Naruto's location. 'He couldn't have been knocked out of the ring alre-'
Suddenly from the earth emerged 'Naruto' right behind Ruby's guard. In his right hand was cupped raw condensed chakra formed into a glowing blue sphere seemingly rotating in every direction. Ruby fortunately dodged out the way when he thrust it forward, but her calm facade broke to surprise feeling when the sphere of chakra grinded when it grazed her left cheek on contact. She responded with a breath of flames defeating the clone.
"Now that's just distracting." Ruby cursed.
Another clone emerged from the ground from behind with two of those spheres of grinding chakra. Ruby used her wings to shield her from the attack, and winced in slight pain when Naruto's spiralling spheres were grinding at her scales. A burst of electricity got rid of it soon enough.
"And that's just annoyingly distracting." Ruby growled.
"GEROMINO!"
Ruby snapped her head up to the sky seeing a falling Naruto. "What in the fu- HRRK!"
The spectators roared in applause while (R)WBY and JNPR gaped as Naruto came down literally smashing a drop kick to Ruby's face. They could feel the raw strength in the impact enough to shatter the entire skeleton of the human body, but was mitigated by Ruby's Aura and body of a dragon. However, the blow completey knocked Ruby off her feet and the force drove her through the pavement of the plaza. It looked as if she was going to get knocked out of the ring until Ruby's tail planted into the earth and anchored her in place.
Hot steam escaped her lips as Ruby let out an exhale. Her cheek sported a cracked scales where Naruto landed his drop kick and some blood dripped from the right corner of her mouth. Getting to her feet, her mouth squirmed a little before to Yang's shock spat out a pair of sharp teeth covered in blood, having been knocked loose from the blow.
"I'll admit; that kind of hurt." Ruby said with a lisp as her natural healing replaced the missing teeth. "How did you do that anyway?"
Naruto gave a smirk as he released his chakra through the air. Wind gathered at his feet and body till there was enough that the kitsune was lifted in the air, essentially giving himself flight. When he had his horde of clones, Naruto as the original ascended into the air in the midst of the confusion waiting for an opening.
"I've been saving this for you for when I beat you." Naruto said. "This is my win."
"Ah, thanks for telling me." Ruby chuckled darkly, her eyes turning into slits. "Now this is where the pain starts."
Before Naruto was given a chance to respond, Ruby revved up her Semblance and disappeared in a bolt of thunder. Naruto barely saw it coming and braced himself with his arms out in defense for the incoming blow. Ruby's fist met Naruto's forearms where she tried to aim under his sternum, but the blow felt numbingly painful with the application of lightning. Gritting his teeth, Naruto went to swat Ruby with his bo staff but the dragon was more skillfull in the skies already out of reach. She flew to his side at the kitsune's flank as though making a grab for his nine tails. The kitsune as she expected moved to have Ruby stay in his line of sight, but she fainted her movements and instead her tail struck like a coiled snake.
The appendage, cold to the touch via its scales, wrapped around Naruto's neck not too tightly to cut off his breathing. Ruby rocketed back down with the kitsune in tow and slammed him down first to the ground. With Naruto dazed by the impact, Ruby allowed her tail to release him and took hold of three of his nine tails in both hands. She twirled on the spot, thus spinning her opponent around and around until the kitsune was green in the face.
"Too... much..." Groaned Naruto. "Let... go..."
Ruby grinned. "If you wish."
And release the kitsune she did, stopping her spin and hurling Naruto out. Combined with his dizziness and velocity, there was no way Naruto had time to recover before he out of the bounds of the ring. He managed to right himself at the last second flipping in midair so his feet landed on the wall. Naruto cursed under his breath knowing that he had lost yet again.
"Naruto loses due to ring out." Kurama announced. "The winner is Ruby Rose!"
As Ruby soaked in the cheer of the spectators, she was none the wiser of a pair of blood red eyes upon a white bearded face gazing at the hatchling with a mix of curiosity and anticipation.
I thought I could add a little tidbit of Rossweisse. She is one of my favorite characters in the limited time I watch the series. It's those like Rossweisse I like more than those like Rias because she is truly professional in her job, but is in bad circumstances because her boss is a pervert. And thus goes one round of the tournament and who else shall advance to the coming stages?
Up next is Chapter 32: Rejoice and Despair - Fatalis!
