Chapter 19: Back Up
Yoruichi returned to the Seireitei the following day after spending some time with her acquaintance. She was now making her way to the head captain's division, as she had been summoned for unknown reasons. However, she was curious if Soifon had also returned.
As Yoruichi walked down the hallway of the first division, her quick flash-step allowed her to reach her destination swiftly. Upon arriving at the office, she noticed Isane, Ikkaku, and Yumichika standing outside the doors.
"Greetings, Isane, Ikkaku, and Yumichika. May I inquire as to why the three of you are here?" Yoruichi asked with curiosity, approaching the three soul reapers. She wondered if they had a specific purpose for being there.
"Oh, hello, Yoruichi-san," Isane greeted with a slight smile and nod. "We are here to receive information about our mission. And what about you?" she asked.
"Yeah, Yoruichi-san, why are you here?" Yumichika inquired, looking at Yoruichi. "I don't know. I was also called here, but I'm wondering if Soifon has returned yet," Yoruichi answered. Yumichika nodded in understanding.
Yoruichi acknowledged the situation and made the decision to wait alongside Isane, Ikkaku, and Yumichika until they were called in. She believed this would not cause any harm and actually appreciated their company. Therefore, she waited with them in silence.
Ikkaku broke the prolonged silence by asking Yoruichi about Ichigo's wellbeing in a formal manner. Yoruichi glanced at the bald soul reaper and shrugged her shoulders. 'I am fairly certain that he is doing well,' she replied. As she had not returned to the world of the living for a few days, she was unaware of the whereabouts of the orange-haired boy.
Ikkaku nodded in agreement. 'I am surprised that he is not present,' he commented. Yoruichi, a woman with dark skin, acknowledged that he was correct. Normally, Ichigo always showed up when she visited, but this time he had mentioned having exams and therefore could not make it. 'He will likely be here in a few days, as he has exams to attend to,' she explained.
Yumichika chimed in with a slight grin on his face, expressing his surprise. 'It is astonishing that Ichigo is engaging in activities other than fighting hollows,' he remarked. Yoruichi responded with a smirk on her face, 'Well, he claims to study at times.'
Ikkaku and Yumichika chuckled. 'I am certain he is studying, but I doubt it,' Ikkaku said with a smirk. Yoruichi couldn't help but laugh at Ikkaku's remark. 'Probably not,' she said. She recalled numerous occasions when she had stopped by Ichigo's window in her cat form, only to find him either reading a comic or simply lounging around.
Yoruichi was about to speak again when the voice of the head captain interrupted her. 'You guys can come in now.' And with that, Yoruichi followed Isane, Ikkaku, and Yumichika into the large room.
'You called for us, head captain?' Yumichika asked as he walked alongside the others to stand beside Toshiro, Unohana, and Shunsui. The other captains stood on the opposite side of the room.
'Yes, I did,' the head captain said, looking at Isane, Ikkaku, Yoruichi, and Yumichika before continuing. 'I summoned you here for a mission,' he said.
'What is the mission?' Isane asked curiously. She was taken aback by being chosen to go since she rarely went on missions.
The head captain acknowledge Isane with a slight nod before providing an explanation about the upcoming mission; 'I kindly request you all to travel to the ninja world and offer you're assistance there for a duration of one to two weeks,' he addressed the four soul reapers gathered before him.
Inquisitively, Ikkuku interjected, 'Has something occurred in that realm?' To which the head captain replied, 'No, there hasn't been any incident. Captain Soifon is simply taking a rest due to rigorous training. However, Captain Ukitake will provide you with the complete briefing upon your arrival.'
Yoruichi, with her keen golden eyes, attentively listened to the head captain's words. Her gaze narrowed upon learning about Soifon's need for rest, indicating potential injury. She refrained from questioning further, fully aware that revealing her desperation to reunite with her former student was unnecessary.
Yoruichi glanced at the head captain followed by Unohana and asked, 'Is that the only task we have to fulfill?' The head captain responded, 'No, but Tsunade will brief you on the additional responsibilities once you arrive.'
"But you must still heed the commands of Captain Soifon and Captain Ukitake," the Head Captain stated, gazing at the four individuals before him. "Yes, sir," they replied in unison.
Isane, unable to contain her anticipation, inquired, "When shall we depart?" "In a few hours, so prepare yourselves accordingly," the Head Captain responded, punctuating his words by striking his cane against the ground to dismiss them.
Isane, Ikkaku, and Yumichika bowed before exiting the room, leaving Yoruichi to stand before the Head Captain with her arms crossed, patiently waiting until the three younger reapers were out of earshot.
"Do you require something, Yoruichi?" the Head Captain inquired, observing her steadfast stance. "Yes, I desire the truth regarding what you are concealing from me and Soifon," she declared, narrowing her eyes at the elderly captain, who was met with the same intensity from Unohana.
"And what exactly do you wish to know?" the Head Captain questioned, his grip on his cane tightening as he regarded the determined woman before him.
"Yoruichi inquired with a determined expression, addressing both the Head Captain and Unohana, her golden eyes intently meeting theirs. 'I must inquire, for how long do you intend to conceal this information from the others? Furthermore, in the event that Aizen is not already aware, what would be the consequence if he were to discover it?' she questioned assertively.
Observing Unohana exchange a glance with the Head Captain, Yoruichi continued her statements. 'No evidence suggests that Aizen possesses knowledge of these matters,' Unohana assured.
Yoruichi challenged their assurance, reminding them of Aizen's deceptive abilities. 'That is merely your assumption. Given that he successfully deceived you for centuries, it is not far-fetched to consider that he is aware or has an inkling of the truth,' Yoruichi argued, emphasizing the need for caution. 'You are well aware of his intelligence.'
Driven by her concern for Soifon's safety, despite acknowledging the second captain's capability to protect herself, Yoruichi expressed her aversion toward witnessing harm befall her former student. 'Additionally, what about the ninja world? Are they all aware of this situation?'," Yoruichi concluded, seeking clarity.
I comprehend the point you are making, Yoruichi. However, until that occurs, our course of action should involve maintaining vigilance and remaining cautious." The head captain expressed his reluctance to become overly confident without a solid plan in place.
Yoruichi acknowledged the head captain's statement with a nod before preparing to depart. Unohana, speaking gently, suggested, "Nevertheless, it would give me some peace of mind if you could keep an eye on Soifon upon arrival to ensure she does not overexert herself." She felt reassured knowing that someone would be looking out for the younger captain.
Yoruichi, without hesitation, responded from her position as she made her way towards Isane, Ikkaku, and Yumichika. "No need to tell me twice. I owe her this much for abandoning her years ago, and now I refuse to leave her behind once again.
Isane calmly inquired, 'Are you ready to depart, Yoruichi?' Observing Yoruichi exit the office, Isane, along with Ikkaku and Yumichika, who had overheard the conversation, refrained from interfering or intruding where they did not belong.
Yoruichi acknowledged the younger soul reapers with a nod and replied, 'Yes, let us proceed.' Taking the lead, she guided them to the twelfth squad in order to gather the necessary items from Mayuri before their departure.
Expressing her urgency, Yoruichi stated, 'I would like to reach the ninja world as soon as possible and provide assistance to Soifon and the others.' Hearing Isane, Ikkaku, and Yumichika behind her, she added, 'That sounds agreeable. Once we arrive, we can strategize accordingly.'
Yoruichi nodded in agreement with the imposing lieutenant and cautioned, 'It is imperative that we refrain from starting any conflicts upon arrival.' She directed her gaze at Ikkaku, who responded with an affirmative nod. 'Understood,' he replied.
