Five Times They Looked at Each Other

2008

Across the room she could see him staring. The nurses station was busy and bustling and her world seemed normal, at peace. As she watched him and let their eyes meet across the room, she wondered what it would be like to kiss him. This was before all the everythings. Before Mark had to sneak out of Meredith's house. In his eyes there was a curiosity, like he was wondering the same thing. Like he was picturing the best way to devour her as he stood reading his charts. She spun on her heels and walked off, a smile drawing over her lips.

"You wanna go home?" He asked her. His eyes probing hers for an easy answer. They were like hazelnuts, brown with a little bit of forestry thrown in. Her irises seemed to swirl as she nodded. They'd just come off of a shift that lasted twelve hours longer than it was supposed to, and her eyelids were drooping. He threw his arm round her shoulder as they walked to the elevator, their small talk consisted of their evening plans and a patient they were both still concerned about. Life had a hit an all-time high.

There had to be a bit of separation after the shooting. After Sloan Sloan and the baby. After Alex - and Addison. After everything. Lexie just hadn't expected it to make her so resentful. Every time she spied him, she was doing her best to avoid his eyes. Those ol' pools of blue she used to get lost in just weren't the same now. Though she still got lost in them sometimes. Still fell for him every time he walked past her in the hallway before she remembered that she wasn't supposed to anymore. Part of her couldn't get her head round it. Even with Alex. It was just different.

He was with Julia now. He was. So, why was he staring at Lexie across the bar? Because he couldn't get her out of his head. He never could. He never would. Julia was nice, and pretty, and her eyes were nice. But she wasn't here with him, so he couldn't remember what colour they were. He was racking his brain, but all he could see was the mocha brown of Lexie's. She was laughing about something with the other interns - okay, they weren't exactly interns anymore, but that's how he thought of them, Meredith's lot. When she laughed, she threw her whole head back and smiled brighter than everyone else in the room. Her eyes screw themselves up tightly. Green, he decided, Julia's eyes were green. They had to be.

There was something he couldn't put his finger on about the way she looked all tussled in his sheets. Hair flung over the pillows, eyes closed, hands splayed out over the comforter. He hovered over her and waited for her eyes to open. But he couldn't wait. He knew she was awake because her breathing was deeper - more real. He leaned down and kissed her. The first of the day. She made a small noise, a warm sound that exhaled through him. Then her lips parted and her fingers dug into his forearms, pulling him back down towards her.
