Snippet 63- Sniper and Crusader 3
*Outside the apartment...*
"I'm not seeing anything out of the ordinary here," Uni said as she checked around the open window with the light on her sniper rifle.
"Then we'll have to expand our search," Batman said in response. "Let's see if there's anything in that grass nearby." So Uni pointed her light in that direction... "Ah-ha. There's a swath of grass that's all dried up, too straight to be natural."
"So the tar monster sucked the grass dry as it passed over?" Uni pondered.
"Given that it consumed all the chemicals in the lab and drank water from the kitchen faucet, it seems quite likely," Batman nodded. "Let's head in this direction and see what else we find. And you might wanna take off the safety on your gun..."
"It doesn't have a safety; I don't have an itchy trigger finger," Uni shook her head, following Batman as they slowly walked down the street. "Wait, what's that?!" She spotted something with a human shape, pointing her gun's light in that direction. "Hold it right there! No sudden movements or I shoot!"
"Kindly get that light out of my eyes, please!" a female voice responded. Said light illuminated a face with fair skin, black hair, green eyes and full lips...
"Wha- Serena!? I mean, Agent Kylie?" Batman gasped. "You're okay?"
"Oh, I'm just fine," Serena Kylie purred, swaying her hips slightly. "You're looking quite well yourself... Batman."
"Serena, are you drunk or something?" Batman said as he took a defensive stance.
"Get back, Batman!" Uni abruptly shouted, a report echoing through the night as she fired on the woman, who spun and fell to the asphalt as a result.
"You shot her?!" Batman cried in disbelief.
"It was on stun setting! I knew you'd probably want the suspect brought in alive!" Uni shot back. "But didn't you see that her body was covered in black goo?!" Indeed, as Batman turned back to look, he saw that the 'catsuit' his fellow agent was wearing had no zipper, and was bulging and shifting unnaturally around her bosom and groin.
"B-Brian..." Serena lifted her head, her expression pained but her eyes now clear. "Run... you can't... fight this thing...!" Something rose up behind her- a giant black blob over 8-9 feet in height!
"Oh shit!" Batman gasped as he instinctively grappled away to a nearby rooftop... but Uni apparently wasn't able to react in time as tentacles shot forth from the blob, grabbing and cocooning her in seconds! "Uni!" Batman called out...
But then the tar was split apart by a pillar of light, the HDD form of Black Sister appearing from said light and flying into the air! "Nice try, tar monster!" she taunted as she took aim... "Let's see how you like this! EX Multi Blaster!" A large beam of light erupted from her gun's barrel, striking the main blob dead-on and splattering it all over the streets! "Yeah! I got 'em!"
"No, you only scattered it! It'll pull itself back together before long!" Batman shook his head. "We need to get out of here and call for backup!"
"But what about your fellow agent?!" Black Sister pointed to Serena.
"F... Forget about me!" the goo-covered woman insisted. "You can't get this tar off me! Go with Brian-! Ahhhh!" She convulsed as the tar wiggled around her body more intensely...
"She's right! We have to go! Now!" Batman insisted.
Uni could only shake her head in futility... "I'll come back for you! I promise!" With that, she flew off following Batman as he jumped and glided back to where they'd parked...
"It's so obvious now what happened," Batman said as the duo glided together. "The chemist must've caught Serena by surprise and tied her up, then used her as a Guinea pig for his creation... But bonding with Agent Kylie must have given that creature enough intelligence to turn on its master and devour him...!"
"But why go out the window and not the door?" Black Sister queried.
"Most likely to lure whoever came looking for Catwoman into a trap. And it almost worked," Batman said as he and the CPU Candidate touched down by the car. "I'm heading back to the local Guild HQ to get backup, start evacuation and containment procedures for this city sector. You should try and get a hold of Lady Noire."
"Okay!" Black Sister nodded. "And I'll fly all the way back to the Basilicom to wake her up if I have to!"
"All right, let's get going before that monster catches up," Batman advised, quickly getting into his car and starting it up, Uni flying clear as the vehicle shifted into gear and peeled rubber, the goddess keeping an eye on Batman as he left to make sure the tar monster wasn't chasing him. Once he was far enough away, Black Sister flew up to the roof of a tall apartment building, dismissing her wings and gun before pulling out her phone.
"Come on, please pick up..." Uni quietly pleaded as she listened to the ring tone...
(click) "Ugh, Uni? Why're you callin' so late...?"
"Noire! We've got big trouble and we need your help!" Black Sister shouted.
"Ow! My ear! Not so loud, Uni!" Noire complained.
"Just making sure you woke up, big sister..."
"Yeah, I'm awake! What's going on?!" So Uni quickly explained the situation... "A tar monster?! And Agent Duane's love interest is being controlled by that thing? Okay, that's bad... Where's Duane now?"
"He went back to the Guild for backup," Black Sister replied. "But there's no way we can stop this thing without your help!"
"I got it, Uni. I'll transform and get over to Laguna as fast as I can," Noire asserted. "In the meantime, I need you to try and track that thing from the air; if you see it approaching any civilian gatherings, homeless, gangs, whatever, you yell at them to get outta there! And for goodness' sake, don't engage that thing unless you have no other choice, got it?!"
"Yes, I promise!" Uni agreed. "But please hurry!"
"I will. See you soon!" And with that, the call was hung up.
"Okay, need to find out where that thing went," Black Sister said to herself as she put away her phone, dashing and leaping off the roof, summoning her wings and sniper rifle once more, using the latter's light to illuminate the streets below... (Being all black is gonna make it hard to find, though... let's go back to where we left Catwoman behind.)
But upon returning to the scene, there was no sign of Serena Kylie or the monster. (Right, of course it wouldn't be that easy...) But then she saw a trail of dried grass leading to another street... seeing something a few feet away from where the grass ended, she pointed her light in that direction-
Another skeleton! But this one wasn't human... the size indicated it was either a cat or small dog. "Oh no..." Uni shook her head in disgust. Further beyond, there were a couple of mouse/rat skeletons as well... "I gotta find this thing now," she asserted, flying in the direction that the skeletons indicated the tar monster was heading...
A scream! Several of them, in fact! Black Sister turned to see several NPCs fleeing out a door, a window nearby revealing others being consumed by the tar monster! (NO!) Uni thought in horror as she jetted toward the scene, using her rifle to blast away several tar tentacles stretching to grab the NPCs that had escaped!
"Look, it's Black Sister!" one NPC pointed.
"Oh, thank goddess!" Another said in relief. "Please help our friends!"
"Just run for now! I'll keep it off you! Noire's on her way!" Black Sister ordered, keeping her sights trained on the door, the NPCs doing as they were told and fleeing into the night. It was a small comfort compared to the screams she could still hear inside... (Oh Noire, please hurry...!)
