Katy walked through the vast hallways of Lazarus Laboratories, her heart still beating quickly in her chest, casting a glance behind her every few seconds, half expecting Saxon to jump out of the shadows. Her instincts were telling her to run far away from the building and the strange man she had encountered, but she couldn't leave without the Doctor and Martha. Following a sighting a waiter had informed her of, Katy peaked through the numerous labs on the upper floors, searching for any sign of the Time Lord. Should she tell him about Saxon? About what he had told her? She had no reason to trust Harold Saxon, but his words had rung a little too true for her liking. And the way he looked at her, like he knew her—
"What's wrong?" A familiar voice questioned, as Katy's feet came to a sudden halt.
She found the Doctor standing a few metres ahead, concern brewing in his brown eyes, his head tilted to one side. She wondered how he knew just from looking at her the conflicted emotions she felt.
"Did something happen?" The Doctor pushed, walking over to her, reaching out to place his hand on her arm.
His palm was warm against her exposed skin and was somehow able to calm her frayed nerves. Katy's mind instantly felt clearer, as she shook her head, her lips moving before she knew what she was going to say.
"Can I trust you?" Katy asked, causing the Doctor to frown, opening his mouth to reply.
"No. Don't just say yes because you want to. I need you to be honest with me right now. Past, present, future, all of it. I need...I need to be able to trust you" Katy explained, watching as the Doctor's gaze softened.
"You can. I promise" The Doctor replied, giving her arm a comforting squeeze, before letting go.
"I'm not the only Krillitane you've met, am I?" Katy said, more as a statement than a question.
The Doctor stilled in front of her. The man who was usually so full of life, never able to stand still for more than a moment, had become a statue. It took a few seconds before his chest began to rise and full again, masking the shock he clearly felt at her words. He took a step closer to her then, a stern expression on his face, his dark eyes connecting with her own.
"...I can't. You asked me not to..." The Doctor stuttered over his words; his jaw clenched.
"Spoilers, right?" Katy suggested, as the Doctor let out a dejected sigh.
"Who spoke to you?" The Doctor inquired.
"I don't know, some politician. He said something about the former Prime Minister not thinking too highly of you" Katy stated, as the Doctor huffed out a laugh.
"Harriet Jones. No, certainly not my biggest fan" The Doctor murmured, rubbing at his eye, in the form of a nervous twitch.
"I'm trying, I really am. To trust you" Katy told him.
"I know" He nodded, with a sad smile.
"Doctor! The Professor's genes have changed again!" Martha called out to them, ushering them over, panic clear on her face.
"His genes have done what?" Katy gaped, as she and the Doctor rushed after her, stopping in front of a computer, with a gene sequence on the screen.
Katy's eyes widened when the sequence suddenly changed right before her eyes, fluctuating for a few moments, as if it was fighting against itself. It should have been impossible. For a human at least.
"Hypersonic sound waves to destabilise the cell structure, then a metagenic programme to manipulate the coding in the protein strands" The Doctor mumbled, aloud, as Martha shot him a confused look.
"Basically, he hacked into his own genes and instructed them to rejuvenate" Katy added.
"But they're still mutating now" Martha pointed out.
"Because he missed something. Something in his DNA has been activated and won't let him stabilise. Something that's trying to change him" The Doctor realised.
"The process alone should have killed him; the energy transfer is too much for a human body. He's going to burn out" Katy theorised, as a grimace grew on the Doctor's features.
"Unless he finds somewhere to leech that energy from" The Doctor exclaimed.
"Yeah, but only a human would have that kind of..." Katy trailed off, as the Doctor raised an eyebrow, and the sickening realisation hit her.
In a split second, the three were running out of the lab to track down the Professor, knowing lives would be in danger if they didn't. Their fears soon became reality when they found a corpse of the floor of Lazarus' office, drained completely of everything that kept her alive. She was nothing but a shell. They rushed back down to reception, hoping to stop the man from killing anyone else, but found they could already be too late. Lazarus had taken Tish up to the roof of the building, and whatever his intentions were, they certainly weren't pure. The three snuck up behind Lazarus and Tish, who were in deep conversation, none the wiser.
"I find that nothing's ever exactly like you expect. There's always something to surprise you. Between the idea and the reality, between the motion and the act—" Lazarus began, when the Doctor cut him off.
"Falls the Shadow" He finished, as Lazarus twisted around, a smug smirk growing on his lips.
"So, the mysterious Doctor knows his Eliot. I'm impressed" Lazarus murmured.
"Martha, what are you doing here?" Tish frowned.
"Tish, get away from him" Martha warned, gesturing for her sister to come stand beside her.
"What? Don't tell me what to do" Tish retorted, causing Katy to roll her eyes.
"She wasn't asking. And neither am I" Katy exclaimed, lunging forward and grabbing Tish's wrist.
"Hey, get off me!" Tish cried, trying to pull away from Katy's grip, but she was far stronger, and was quick to drag Tish away from Lazarus.
"I wouldn't have thought you had time for poetry, Lazarus, what with you being busy defying the laws of nature and all" The Doctor accused, trying to pull Lazarus attention back to him.
"You're right, Doctor. One lifetime's been too short for me to do everything I'd like. How much more I'll get done in two or three or four" Lazarus suggested, as Katy's mouth went slack.
"Your insane. Everyone has their time. It's the way it has to be" Katy argued, barely paying attention to the way Tish was still trying to pull away from her.
"Look at what you've done to yourself" The Doctor muttered, in a tone of pity.
"Who are you to judge me?" Lazarus spat out, anger growing behind his eyes.
"Martha, call your bloody guard dog off!" Tish insisted, slapping Katy's arm.
"You gonna' do anything else stupid?" Katy questioned, as Tish gaped at her.
"Anything else stupid?" Tish huffed.
"Well, you were about to make out with a guy in his seventies. I'm kind of questioning your judgement right now" Katy pointed out, as Martha turned a little green.
"Really, Tish?" Martha cringed.
"I know the age thing's a bit freaky, but it works for Catherine Zeta-Jones" Tish shrugged.
"Uh, ladies?" The Doctor interrupted, gesturing to behind Tish.
"Holy shit" Katy exclaimed, her eyes almost popping out of her head when she saw what had become of Lazarus.
He had morphed into some sort of skeletal scorpion, what was left of Lazarus' skin stretched across its bony form. The creature's neck extended to reveal a waxy face, the only part of Lazarus which still appeared human. He had grown half a dozen legs, sharp claws where hands had once been, and a razor-sharp stinger raised up in the air, ready to attack.
"You still want to kiss him?" Katy murmured, as Tish's face paled.
"Run!" The Doctor yelled, grabbing Katy's hand and dragging her toward the roof doors.
The group were rushing back inside, with the Doctor using his sonic screwdriver to lock the roof access, not that it would stop Lazarus for long. They soon arrived at the lifts, as the Doctor went to press the button, but Katy was tugging on his hand, pulling him over to the next flight of stairs.
"Fuck the lift, keep running!" Katy exclaimed, as the other two girls followed close on their heels.
They only managed to make it down one floor when a siren began to blare, and the lights above them dimmed. Katy peered down the nearest corridor, watching as the sliding doors slammed shut, as panic coursed through her.
"What's happening?" Martha questioned.
"An intrusion. It triggers a security lockdown. Kills most of the power. Stops the lifts, seals the exits" Tish answered.
"Whose stupid idea was that?" Katy complained.
"He must be breaking through that door. Come on!" The Doctor insisted, as the group continued running down the stairs.
Katy's dread only grew as they made it back to reception to find the crowds still bustling about, despite the alarms blaring, as if they didn't have a care in the world. They needed to run or more people were going to die.
"Tish, is there another way out of here?" The Doctor asked.
"There's an exit in the corner, but it'll be locked now" Tish responded, as the Doctor pulled out his sonic screwdriver and threw it toward Martha.
"Martha, setting fifty-four. Hurry" He exclaimed, as she gave a curt nod, racing off to do as she was told.
"How the hell are we going to get all these people out of here?" Katy murmured.
"Tell them they're in danger?" The Doctor suggested, as she raised an eyebrow.
"Humans don't run from danger, they run toward it...but maybe they'll run from this..." Katy trailed off, with a grin, spotting something on the nearby wall.
Slamming her elbow into the red fire alarm, a louder alarm began to echo through the room, lights above them blinking red, as a computer automated voice began to call out for them all to head to the exits. The crowds started to shuffle toward the doors, which Martha had now managed to open, a little slower than Katy liked.
"Not bad, eh?" Katy smirked, as the Doctor beamed at her.
A loud roar had the pair's heads snapping up to see Lazarus scuttling toward them, as the remaining guests by the exit began to scream. A stampede of people pushed their way through the narrow doors, some falling to their knees in desperation to get away from the horrible creature chasing them. Katy saw out of the corner of her eye that Lazarus was making a beeline toward Martha's mother and brother, as she wondered for a moment whether that meant he was still aware of his actions. Before Lazarus could get too close, Katy had grabbed a bottle of champagne and chucked it toward the creature's head, as it smashed against his skeletal form. Lazarus let out a growl, shaking his head as the champagne blinded him, allowing Leo the time to grab his mother's hand and drag her out of the room.
"Okay, maybe not my best idea" Katy gulped, as Lazarus whipped around to face her, bristling with anger.
She stumbled back a pace as Lazarus opened his mouth, which stretched open to reveal more pincers where his chin had once been, as his hot, rotting breath fanned past her. He raised his stinger in the air, ready to leech the energy out of her body when the Doctor raced forward.
"Lazarus! Leave her alone!" The Doctor shouted; his tone full of panic, as Lazarus turned toward him.
"What's the point? You can't control it. The mutation's too strong. Killing those people won't help you. You're a fool. A vain old man who thought he could defy nature. Only Nature got her own back, didn't she? You're a joke, Lazarus! A footnote in the history of failure!" The Doctor goaded, doing his best to distract the creature, and pull his focus away from Katy.
Before she could do anything to stop him, the Doctor was racing away, with Lazarus fast on his heels. Katy watched helplessly as they both disappeared from view, ready to chase after them when she spotted a woman dressed in a lavish gown still cowering on the ground. She knew what the Doctor would want her to do.
"Hey. C'mon, you can't stay here. You want to live? Then get up" Katy insisted, as she held out her hand for the woman to take, who gladly reached out for her.
By the time the pair had made it to the exit downstairs, the crowds had managed to get out of the doors, despite the building still being in lockdown. Katy ushered the woman on, and soon found Martha by the security desk, the Doctor's sonic screwdriver still in her hands.
"How'd you break the lockdown?" Katy questioned.
"Changed it to setting 55 and shone it on the security computers. That was right, yeah?" Martha questioned.
"You know, I'm starting to see why he likes you" Katy grinned.
"You're going back in there, aren't you?" Martha guessed.
"He's my ride" Katy shrugged, as Martha's lips pulled into a smile.
"Let's go" Martha nodded, when her mother called out to her.
"Where are you going?" Francine cried, reaching out for her arm.
"I've got to go back" Martha told her, as Francine's eyes grew wide.
"You can't! You saw what that thing did. It'll kill you!" Francine insisted, as Martha shook her head.
"I don't care. I have to go" Martha retorted and took off running without another word.
"She'll be alright. I'll look out for her" Katy murmured, as Tish gave her a grateful nod.
"She's turned her back on us. Left us for...for him" Francine spat out, as Katy's eyes narrowed.
"He just saved your life" Katy pointed out, feeling protective suddenly.
"And we're her family" Francine stated, as Katy took a step forward, crowding Francine's personal space.
"You're right. Yet here you are, cowering by the exit while your daughter tries to stop that thing from killing anyone else. Why don't you go after her if you're so bloody worried about her?" Katy continued, as Francine found she couldn't hold Katy's gaze.
"Yeah. That's what I thought" Katy muttered, before turning on her heel and running in the direction Martha had sprinted off in.
After following the noise of an explosion, the pair were reunited with the Doctor, who led them back to reception and Lazarus' device. Realising they had nowhere else to run, the Doctor ushered both women into the capsule, jumping in beside them just as Lazarus lunged at him. Katy let out a sigh of relief as the door closed behind him, knowing that Lazarus wouldn't be able to get in. But that also meant...
"Great. Now, we're trapped in the blender" Katy huffed.
"Well, yeah, that's a slight problem" The Doctor responded.
"You mean you don't have a plan?" Martha gaped.
"Yes, the plan was to get inside here" The Doctor stated, as Katy grimaced as she heard Lazarus scuttling around outside.
"Then what?" Martha pushed.
"Well, then I'd come up with another plan" The Doctor shrugged.
"Not to interrupt, but am I the only one slightly concerned he might get the bright idea to turn the machine on?" Katy hissed, as Martha's eyes doubled in size.
"Screwdriver. Can't quite...reach..." The Doctor muttered, patting the inner pocket of his suit jacket for the device.
"In your own time, then" Martha complained, as the Doctor continued trying and failing to reach inside the pocket.
"For God sake, let me do it" Katy grumbled, before reaching down and pulling the jacket open, as the buttons fell to the floor.
"Hey! I liked this suit!" The Doctor exclaimed, as she gave him a look.
"And I like being alive, now sh" Katy retorted, reaching for the sonic screwdriver tucked inside the jacket.
"What're you going to do with that?" Martha asked, as Katy pulled out the device and passed it to the Doctor.
"Improvise" The Doctor said, as he placed his hand on Katy's hip to steady himself before sliding down the wall of the capsule.
Katy felt her cheeks reddening as the Doctor lowered himself to his knees in front of her, hoping that he didn't notice. She watched as he opened a panel in the floor, pulling out numerous wires, trying to find the right one, clearly attempting to turn off the machine from the inside. Just when her flushed cheeks were cooling down, the Doctor glanced up at her, and this time her stomach fluttered too.
"Human? How can it be human?" Martha's voice brought Katy out of her distracted thoughts, realising the pair were still talking.
"Probably from dormant genes in Lazarus's DNA. The energy field in this thing must have reactivated them. And it looks like they're becoming dominant" The Doctor explained, pulling his gaze away from Katy, returning to his work.
"So, it's a throwback" Martha realised.
"Some option that evolution rejected for you millions of years ago, but the potential is still there. Locked away in your genes, forgotten about until Lazarus unlocked it by mistake" The Doctor continued, as the machine began to make a whirring noise.
"He's turned the machine on" The Doctor exclaimed, as the three were blinded momentarily by a bright light.
"Screw this, I am not turning into that thing" Katy murmured, before sliding down the capsule, joining the Doctor on the floor.
"What're you doing?" She questioned.
"I'm trying to set the capsule to reflect energy rather than receive it" The Doctor stated, shining the Sonic Screwdriver's light onto a red wire.
"Let me, you just pull which wires you need to" Katy stated, as she took the screwdriver from his hands, pressing it to the panel.
"We're going to end up like him!" Martha cried, as the Doctor took a blue wire out, swapping it for a black one.
"Just one more!" He exclaimed, pulling out another blue wire, as a high-pitched ringing sound rung out.
A second later they heard a loud thudding sound from outside, as the bright lights of the machine started to dim, as did the whirring sound that had been growing louder. Katy ran a hand through her long hair, as relief flooded through her veins, thankful that they had avoided turning into Lazarus.
"You just love leaving things to the last second, don't you?" Katy huffed, passing the Doctor his device back.
"More fun that way" The Doctor grinned, as he reached out for her arm and helped haul her to her feet.
He was then pushing the capsule door open, revealing a naked Lazarus close by, still in the form of his younger self. Katy's eyes narrowed as she watched to check whether his chest would rise and fall but it never did. She wandered over to the computer desk that controlled Lazarus' device, whilst the Doctor and Martha loomed over the Professor's dead body.
"He seems so human again. It's kind of pitiful" Martha mumbled.
"Eliot saw that, too. This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang, but with a whimper" The Doctor stated, as an alarm blared from behind them.
"Manual override. Manual override" A computer automated voice echoed, as the Doctor twisted around to see Katy hunched over the control panel.
"What're you doing?" The Doctor asked.
"We can't let anyone else get their hands on this tech. I'm blowing it up" Katy responded, as a warning flashed up on the screen.
"Him too" Katy announced, as the Doctor's brow furrowed.
"He's dead" The Doctor exclaimed, as Katy gave him a look of disbelief.
"You don't think someone will be able to reverse engineer the technology from his corpse?" Katy retorted.
"Katy, I know what he did was terrible but...he still deserves a proper burial, doesn't he?" Martha suggested, making Katy scoff.
"He killed someone. He would have killed your mother and brother too if I didn't stop him" Katy pointed out, as Martha clamped her lips shut.
"This isn't how I do things" The Doctor told her, walking over to the control panel, as Katy shook her head.
"Things aren't always black and white, Doctor. We both know that" Katy insisted, as the Doctor ran a hand over his face, debating over whether to agree with her.
Martha was surprised to find his opinion was swayed so easily before remembering who was asking him to change it. She was beginning to think there was little Katy wouldn't be able to convince the Doctor of.
"Guys...where's Lazarus?" Martha gaped, as the pair whipped around to find the man in question was now nowhere to be seen.
"Not to say I told you so but...I freaking told you so" Katy grumbled.
Luckily for all of them, it didn't take long to find a still mutating Lazarus, hiding away in a nearby cathedral. Two skeletal remains were found at the front of the building, as guilt washed over the Doctor's face, clearly regretting stopping Katy now. Lazarus had found a blanket to cover his otherwise naked body with, a fine sheet of sweat clear on his face. He was dying even if he didn't want to admit it.
"Tell me, Lazarus. Were you always a killer, or has this process really changed you so much?" Katy goaded, as the three sauntered toward him.
"Those people were nothing. I changed the course of history" Lazarus retorted.
"Any of them might have done too. You think histories only made with equations? Facing death is part of being human. You can't change that" The Doctor theorised.
"No, Doctor. Avoiding death, that's being human. It's our strongest impulse, to cling to life with every fibre of being. I'm only doing what everyone before me has tried to do. I've simply been more successful" Lazarus muttered, watching as Lazarus convulsed.
"Not everyone is a psychopath" Katy scoffed, as the Doctor nudged her with his elbow.
"He's going to change again any minute" Martha whispered.
"I know. If I can get him up into the bell tower somehow, I've an idea that might work" The Doctor replied, as Katy noticed the look in Martha's eyes.
She was going to use herself as bait. Put her life on the line just to impress the Doctor. And Katy had a feeling he still wouldn't see her as she wanted him to.
"You're so sentimental, Doctor. Maybe you are older than you look" Lazarus exclaimed, bringing Katy out of her thoughts.
"I'm old enough to know that a longer life isn't always a better one. In the end, you just get tired. Tired of the struggle, tired of losing everyone that matters to you, tired of watching everything turn to dust. If you live long enough, Lazarus, the only certainty left is that you'll end up alone" The Doctor explained, as Katy felt a twinge of sympathy.
She had never asked the Doctor what happened to his family. But from the pain she could hear in his voice, she could assume he had had lost them all a long time ago.
"That's a price worth paying" Lazarus muttered, as Katy's jaw clenched.
"No. It really isn't" Katy pushed, thinking of her own family for a moment.
"I'm not going to let you hurt anyone else, Lazarus" The Doctor warned, as the Professor's eyes narrowed.
"You've not been able to stop me so far" Lazarus pointed out, almost gleefully.
"Leave him, Lazarus! He's old and bitter. I thought you had a taste for fresher meat" Martha goaded, grabbing the Professor's attention.
"Time to run!" Katy exclaimed, grabbing Martha's hand and dragging her away from Lazarus, as the Doctor called out to them.
"What are you doing?" Martha cried, as Katy pulled her toward the tower steps.
"Keeping you alive!" Katy replied, as the two girls sprinted up the tower.
Katy's lungs burnt as they kept running, now able to hear growls echoing from behind them, indicating that Lazarus was changing again. Katy kept tugging Martha onwards, knowing if they had any chance of stopping Lazarus, they needed to get to the top of the bell tower. She shoved the doors open to the tower, pulling Martha along the walkway, looking down to see the Doctor sitting by the organ, realising what he was going to do.
"Hypersonic sound waves" Katy mumbled, as a snarl grabbed her attention.
She watched in horror as Lazarus squeezed through the doorway, now morphed into his skeletal body, his stinger raised in the air. Katy was quick to push Martha behind her, not willing to let the other girl die.
"You want her...you'll have to get through me first first, Lazarus!" Katy spat out, as the Professor gave her a sinister smile, lunging forward.
Suddenly, sound starts blaring from the organ below, almost deafening the girls and doing far worse to Lazarus. Despite this, the creature still continued trying to grab them, throwing it's large pincer in the air, breaking the wooden railing between them.
"Stay down!" Katy insisted, shoving Martha toward the floorboards.
A split second later, Lazarus' pincer was swinging toward her, throwing her off her feet, as she grabbed onto the splintering rail, a scream leaving her lips. The Doctor's head snapped up, fear sucking the air from his lungs as he watched Katy scrambling to pull herself up, when Lazarus lunged at her once more. Taking out his sonic screwdriver, he used the device to increase the hypersonic soundwaves, reaching the crescendo of the tune. Lazarus cried out in pain, throwing his head back, as the bell tower vibrated with the sound. Katy gasped as Lazarus was falling forward suddenly, almost taking her with him as he hurtled toward the ground. The loud thud from below had her grimacing, her hands beginning to sweat as she tried once more to pull herself up.
"Here!" Martha insisted, holding out her hand, which Katy gratefully took, and used to wrench herself up onto the platform.
"Katy?!" The Doctor's panicked voice called out, as Katy all but collapsed against Martha.
"Still alive...I think!" Katy exclaimed.
Katy ran a hand over her sweaty forehead as she and Martha made their way down the steps, absolutely exhausted from the trials of the day. From the look on Martha's face, the other girl was feeling the same, her knees beginning to tremble.
"I gotta' admit, you're good. Really good" Katy stated, as a smile grew on Martha's lips.
"You mind telling him that sometime" Martha mumbled, looking down at her feet.
"Look, him and Rose...no one was getting in between those two. It's just...it's too soon, you know?" Katy went on.
"I...I don't know what you mean" Martha stuttered, a light blush on her cheeks.
"Oh, please. You've been practically drooling over him all day" Katy sniggered.
"God, is it that bad?" Martha cringed, as Katy gave her a half shrug.
"You need to ask yourself how long you'll be willing to wait for him" Katy suggested.
"A lot longer than I want to" Martha sighed, as Katy reached up to touch her shoulder.
"Don't lose yourself loving someone" Katy exclaimed, as Martha mulled over her words.
"Have you ever loved someone?" Martha inquired, as Katy let out a huff.
"Nope. I've managed to avoid that so far" Katy said, patting Martha's shoulder a couple times before letting go.
She hoped for Martha's sake that she would heed her advice.
Footsteps could be heard echoing up the tower a moment later, as the Doctor came into view, racing toward them. Katy was taken aback as he was suddenly pulling her into his arms, lifting her off her feet, his hands clutching onto her waist tightly. He was breathing heavily as continued holding her a little longer, dropping his chin onto her shoulder, attempting to calm his hearts which were still beating wildly.
"Are you okay?" He questioned, lowering her back to the ground, pulling away but keeping his hands still clutching onto her waist.
"Pretty sure everything's intact. Nice tune, by the way" Katy smirked, as the Doctor breathed out a sigh of relief.
"He didn't hurt you?" The Doctor insisted, as she shook her head, fondly.
"I'm fine. Really" Katy replied, pushing down the urge to roll her eyes.
"She saved me. She was...she was great" Martha murmured, as the Doctor finally turned to her.
"I'm glad you're both alright" The Doctor grinned, patting Martha on the shoulder, before turning his attention back to Katy.
"Do me favour next time. Tell me before you use yourself as bait" The Doctor huffed, as she slapped his arm, playfully.
"The same to you. You're gonna' wear out those damn shoes one day" Katy stated, as the two started to descend the stairs, not noticing the despondent look on Martha's face.
"Maybe it will be too long to wait" Martha mumbled, to herself.
Wandering back toward Lazarus Laboratories, they found most of the crowds had dispersed, but Martha's family had remained waiting on the steps. Tish was sprinting toward her sister, pulling her into a warm embrace, thankful to find she appeared unharmed. Meanwhile, Francine was more interested in speaking to her daughter's mysterious new friends. Not that she planned to do much talking.
"Ah, Mrs Jones. We still haven't finished our chat" The Doctor announced, putting on a charming smile.
Katy's jaw dropped open as she watched Francine slap the Doctor hard across the face, with enough force to have the Doctor staggering back a step. Martha watched on in horror as her mother raised her finger to the Doctor's face, practically seething.
"Keep away from my daughter!" Francine warned, as Katy pushed herself in between the pair.
"Look, I get it's been a pretty intense night, but raise your hand to him again and we're gonna' have a problem" Katy interjected, standing almost protectively in front of the Doctor.
"All of the mothers, every time" The Doctor muttered.
"Yeah, wonder why that is" Katy snorted, as Martha grabbed her mother's arm, pulling her around to face her.
"He is dangerous. I've been told things" Francine insisted.
"What are you talking about?" Martha gaped.
"Look around you. Nothing but death and destruction" Francine went on, as Martha's brother took a step forward.
"Tish who invited everyone to this thing in the first place. I'd say technically, it's her fault" Leo pointed out, earning a nudge from his sister.
The whole family quickly descended into a heated argument, as Katy and the Doctor started to back away from the domestics. If there was one thing that made the Doctor want to run for the hills...it was mothers.
"So, you still planning on letting her go?" Katy questioned.
"Well, she was never really just a passenger, was she?" The Doctor replied, as Katy gave him a grin.
"She seems like one of the good ones. Try not to lose her" Katy suggested, as he gave her a nod.
"Yes, Ma'am" He murmured, as the pair burst out laughing.
Katy's laughter immediately died in her throat when she spotted familiar brown eyes from further up the steps of the building. Saxon. He inclined his head, obviously wanting her to follow him as he headed back inside the building, which the police were still only beginning to cordon off.
"I'll be back in a second. Forgot my bag inside" Katy told the Doctor, who seemed oblivious to the fact that she hadn't brought one that night.
As soon as Katy made it through the doorway to the building, a warm hand was grabbing her arm, tugging her behind the wall, and out of the Doctor's view. Saxon was quick to push her against the wall, as she gave him a warning look, before brushing his hands away from her.
"You disappeared early. A little convenient. Almost like you knew what was going to happen" Katy suggested, as the man's lips pulled back into a smug smirk.
"And your back to being the Doctor's lapdog, didn't take you long, did it?" Saxon accused, as she rolled her eyes.
"I don't know what your game is, but I'm clearly not as stupid as you seem to think" Katy responded.
"Oh, really?" Saxon exclaimed, quirking an eyebrow.
"Lazarus had help from someone a lot smarter than him. Too smart to be human. You, I'm guessing?" Katy went on.
"I may have given him a few pointers" Saxon grinned.
"And what's stopping me from going out those doors right now and telling the Doctor everything I know?" Katy mumbled, as Saxon leant in closer.
"This" Saxon announced, pulling a device out of his jacket pocket, one that looked disturbingly similar.
It appeared to be a golden version of the Doctor's sonic screwdriver. A little bigger, certainly flashier, but clearly it used the same technology.
"If you want to stop jumping around his timeline, you'll keep those lovely lips shut" Saxon told her, as Katy's eyes widened.
"How do you...?" Katy trailed off, as he pressed a button on the screwdriver.
"I can give you your life back. Just wait and see" Saxon replied, as Katy's surroundings suddenly began glitching.
Her vision blurred for a moment, as her knees gave way from beneath her. She would have fallen to the ground if strong hands hadn't grabbed onto her waist, steadying her. Katy's eyes fluttered open, confused to find she was no longer in the same building...and it wasn't Saxon in front of her.
"Doctor?" She gaped, finding it was the Time Lord's eleventh incarnation staring back at her.
"That looked like a rough jump. You okay?" The Doctor asked, as Katy's mouth opened and closed a few times.
Had Saxon just thrown her through the Doctor's timeline?
