Susan made her way down the hallways of Cair Paravel to Lucy's quarters. She paused to collect her thoughts and after a moment, knocked on the carved wooden door. "Lucy? Peter?"
"Come in," Peter's voice called from the other side and Susan opened the door to find Lucy crying on Peter's shoulder. The two of them were on the sitting couch and Peter turned his attention to Susan as she walked into the room.
"We were just discussing how the fire flower magic not working isn't Lucy's fault."
"But it is!" Lucy protested, squirming out of Peter's hug. "If Edmund's injuries are not better, then what of the other Narnians I healed? What if they are hurting as well?"
"Is that what this about?" Peter asked softly and Lucy nodded.
"Don't worry," Susan sat down on her sister's other side and wrapped her in a gentle hug. "They are fine. I suspect something else is wrong with Edmund."
"How would you know?" Peter asked next, making Susan roll her eyes.
"Well, back in London," Susan began hesitantly, "I never told you this, but I want to join Queen Alexandra Royal Army Nursing Corps when I am old enough."
"Really?" Peter had no idea and he felt rather ashamed of the fact. "Why did you never tell-"
"There were a lot of other things going on," Susan was not sure why kept this to herself, but it didn't matter now. "But I spent a lot of time reading medical books and-"
"Were those the books in the bomb shelter?" Peter had noticed them but never cared to read the titles.
His sister nodded and continued:
"What I was saying was, it is possible Lucy's cordial did in fact heal Edmund's wound, but it's not as simple as that."
"Is he going to be all right?" Lucy asked next and Susan nodded, even though she knew her reassurance was a lie. "Good."
"In the meantime, do you want to come back to the throne room with me?" Peter asked and Lucy agreed. Once the two of them left to continue the audiences, Susan wandered back to Edmund's room. She knew she promised that Peter would be the one to look over his injury, but her mind had come up with a few theories she had to confirm. Susan hadn't been there when Edmund was hurt, but what she heard from Peter, the White Witch had impaled him.
"And he's the one who saved me. He broke her wand and then she stabbed him, Susan. I- I wasn't sure he would be alive when I got to him, and I kept thinking about how to tell you and Lucy and-"
"It's all right now, Peter." She knew it must have been horrible to think about what to say, but now, his rambling words might help save Edmund, now.
She came to the door of his room and announced herself. When she entered, Susan found her younger brother reading a book as he waited for her.
"I'm back," she said and was immediately given a glare.
"Where's Peter? You promi-"
"I know, I know," she felt a bit bad about that as she came over to sit on the bed next to Edmund. "But he and Lucy needed to return to the throne room. Now, let me have a look at your injury."
"No."
"I won't touch it, I promise."
"No."
"Oh, come on Edmund! This could be serious!" She watched him think it over and after a second he relented. Susan moved the blankets aside and gently placed her hands on Edmund's stomach.
"Hey, I thought you sai-" His protest was cut short as a sudden pain made him yell.
"Just as I thought," Susan felt bad for causing him pain, but it confirmed her theory. "Just rest."
"What's wrong?" Edmund asked, eying her suspiciously.
"I am not sure."
"Susan, don't lie to me!" he snapped, "You said it could be serious."
"I-I did," she wished she hadn't said so, but it was impossible to take back now. "To be honest, I am merely concerned that there are pieces of the Witch's broken wand inside your wound."
"But it's supposed to be healed," Edmund began, clearly thinking over the matter. "Isn't it?"
"It is." Susan said, "but around the fragments. It's complicated."
"Can it be fixed?"
"I am not sure," she really was not. This was Narnia, not London after all. If they were still there, Susan would not hesitate to send her brother to the hospital immediately, but here in Narnia, surgery was bound to be simple and crude. "But I am sure we can figure out a way to ease your pain for the time being. The best-case scenario is that your body heals itself and it no longer bothers you."
"And worst case?" Edmund asked next, making Susan hesitate.
"I'm not sure." She didn't want to say 'death', but the word lingered in the back of her mind. "But I know you, like myself, have Aslan's Blessing. Now, go to sleep."
Susan pulled the bed quilts up to his chin and gave him a kiss on the forehead. After he had closed his eyes, Susan blew out the candles in his room and went to the castle library to begin collecting information on Narnian medical practices.
There were at least a dozen books on plants and herbs, another three on creating healing poultices and drinks; but there was nothing quite modern enough to calm the worry Susan kept to herself. She kept looking, hoping for any glimmer of hope, but soon, fell into the pages of an endless nightmare.
A/N: Welcome back! A new chapter. Enjoy and please review. There is more to follow. On another note, from what I've read, fragments in a wound can sometimes be healed around and become part of the body in a way. I don't remember the technical name, off the top of my head. Forgive me. Also, I love Susan. She really needs more love and attention as a character.
