Chapter 03: Voight Getting the news.
Once Voight was done burying Kevin's body, he headed to the district, his head pounding as he drove, his hands clenching the steering wheel. He couldn't shake off the guilt from his chest or mind.
But he didn't feel guilty about killing Kevin; he knew that guy deserved to be dead, especially after what he did. However, he did feel guilty for yelling at Erin. Voight made it to the district, parked, and didn't see many others around. He didn't mind since he preferred to be alone right now.
He walked past Platt, who was getting ready to leave. 'Hank, there you are,' Platt said when she saw Voight heading to the bullpen, but she stopped him. Her eyes showed nothing but sympathy. How could she tell the man who just lost his son about Erin? Voight stopped to greet Platt.
'Hey,' he said, about to head upstairs, but Platt stopped him. 'Have you checked your phone recently?' Platt asked, hoping he had, so she wouldn't have to tell the male Sargent.
"Hey, been busy," the gray-haired man told the female Sargent, shaking his head and looking at Platt. "Why, somethin' happen while I was gone?" he asked, not liking the look Platt was giving him.
"I know you're dealin' with a lot and don't want more bad news, but maybe call Antonio or Al to fill you in," Platt suggested, unable to break the news herself about Voight's foster daughter was shot and raped.
Voight reluctantly agreed to follow Platt's advice, realizing she was too uneasy or upset to tell him herself. "Alright, thanks Trudy," he said, making his way up to the bullpen as Platt left. He had a sinking feeling about the bad news he was about to hear, unsure if he could handle it.
Voight walked into his office and saw he had ten missed calls and some texts from Antonio, Al, and even Jay. He dialed Al's number and put the phone to his ear.
'Hey, I'm glad you called back,' Al said. Voight came up with an excuse, 'Sorry, left my phone at the district.'
Voight heard Al sigh, 'It's cool, but something important. Can you come to Med? I need to talk to you in person.' Voight's heart raced, worrying about Erin. 'Erin's not doing well, you need to come to the hospital or I can come to the district,' Al said, leaving Voight in shock.
Voight let the phone drop from his ear a bit, and he could've sworn he stopped breathing. That was not what he needed to hear.
He was hoping it wasn't serious, hoping they just couldn't find Erin or something else had happened. 'Hank?!' Al called from the phone, Voight put the phone back to his ear.
The gray-haired man didn't know if he could go back to the hospital after losing Justin. He didn't want to hear that he was going to lose another child.
Voight took a breath. 'I'll be there,' he said before hanging up on Al. He let himself lean against his desk, placing his hands over his face and let out a muffled scream.
It wasn't long that he had to take his son off of life support, now he was afraid he was going to lose Erin further than he already had this night.
Taking a deep breath, Voight made it to Med after a long hour of letting himself figure out if he should go to the hospital or just go home. But he knew Erin needed him, and he needed to know what had happened.
Voght got to the hospital real quick and found Al waiting for him. 'Is Erin alright?' Voight asked as he hurried up to Al, who had come halfway to meet him.
Voight saw Al glance down before meeting his eyes, then took a deep breath. 'I know this is probably the last thing you wanna hear or deal with,' Al said, making himself look at Voight.
'Wait, Al, what's up with Erin? Is she okay?' Voight asked, not wanting Al to sugarcoat it but secretly hoping it was nothing serious or just some silly prank everyone thought was funny.
When Voight looked toward the emergency doors, he spotted the whole team there, including some folks from station 51, which left him puzzled. 'Al? Why are Kelly, Casey, and those two station 51 girls here?' he inquired.
"Hey Hank, just relax. They're here because Casey and Severide were the ones who found Erin," Al said as he glanced inside and nodded at Voight.
Al swallowed hard, still in shock about what happened to the female detective until Antonio confirmed it at Med. "Erin... was..." Al paused, looking at his old friend. "Erin was shot and raped just a few hours ago," he said, biting his lip.
"She has other marks from the attack, and Brett mentioned they lost her for 17 minutes on the way here." Voight couldn't believe what he was hearing. He had hoped it was just minor injuries, but the news that his foster daughter was shot and raped hit him hard, almost losing another child.
"Any idea who's behind this mess?" Voight asked, crossing his fingers that Antonio and Al had some answers, but Al's shake of the head dashed his hopes. "Nope, no clues. When Kelly and Casey found Erin, there was no one around. I think the perp made a clean getaway without leaving a trace."
Voight felt a surge of anger, unsure if he had the strength to act, but he knew he had to do right by Erin. "Once Erin's safe, we'll get the story from her and we're not stopping until we catch the culprit," Al assured him.
"Any updates on Erin yet?" Voight inquired, eager for news, but Al had none to share. "Nope, still in surgery, but we should hear soon," Al said as he left Voight at the hospital.
Voight entered the hospital, eyeing his team with clenched fists, uncertain of his ability to help, but he stayed silent, settling in to wait for updates on his foster daughter.
Another two hours went by and Rhodes finally walked out of the double doors. Everyone immediately got up from their seats and gathered around him, all eager for answers. Voight clenched his hands at his sides, visibly anxious as Rhodes started explaining Erin's condition.
Voight nervously asked, 'Is Erin going to be okay?' Rhodes took a moment, then replied, 'It was touch and go for a while.'
Voight's breath caught in his throat. 'Physically, Erin should make a full recovery, but mentally, it's going to take some time,' Rhodes continued, looking at the group.
'Erin was shot in the stomach, we managed to remove the bullet, she has a few cracked ribs and some bruising, but everything will heal with time,' Rhodes explained.
Voight couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief upon hearing that Erin would be okay, and he noticed the others doing the same. 'Can we go see her?' Kelly asked.
